Canberra Times photographer Keegan Carroll explores the history of Lake Burley Griffin before the lake existed.
Transcript
00:09Right now this feels like the heart of Canberra but not that long ago this lake right here didn't
00:15exist. I'm at Lake Burley Griffin one of the most recognizable parts of Canberra. Now today we are
00:23talking about what this was like before it existed. Before the lake was formed it ran through the
00:29Longley River a large floodplain prone to flooding and largely undeveloped. The lake
00:37was part of Walter Burley Griffin's original plan for Canberra but it wasn't
00:40realized until the 1960s when the river was dammed and the basin began to fill.
00:46When the water came in it changed everything and the city finally started
00:50to feel like what it was meant to be. Over time Lake Burley Griffin became a focal
00:54point for Canberrans. For events, for recreation and for daily life. Reshaping
01:00how Canberrans connect with their city.
