00:00the hockey hornet aka david dwark joining us there he is a reporter for the hockey news
00:05and the host of the hockey show with roy bellamy he joins us there hello hockey hornet
00:11buzz buzz gentlemen how's it going it's good buddy how are you i'm good other than feeling
00:17like i'm in a like a war bunker uh i'm good i had to find a quiet spot at the
00:23station to
00:23to do our interview i didn't want to do it from the newsroom so i found this back studio and
00:28i
00:29mean it's quiet it is it is quiet it sounds soundproof it looks like you got like an umbrella
00:33back there for photo shoots where is that where uh will man so looks all handsome on set obviously
00:38yes obviously i'm i'm like have i haven't been interested in the hockey playoffs they've been
00:45amazing all the games have been but just not the same without the panthers and i just have
00:50like i'll see a hockey game on maybe i'll stop for a minute but then i go look for something
00:55else
00:56are you the same way because it's like your team's not in it no no maybe because i grew up
01:03as a panthers fan and i came into my career as a panthers follower and it was at a time
01:08where they
01:08were just like never in the play making the play what felt like an eternity got adapted to really
01:14enjoying just what the playoffs have to offer and i think that's most hockey fans like even if their
01:19team is in it or not like you're you're really into the playoffs because it's just another level
01:23um so so no but i get where you're coming from uh because it's your team and they're not there
01:28and it sucks but the good thing is they're going to be back in in short order and uh that's
01:34the
01:34cool thing about the panthers situation right now is like they had this awful injury filled year but
01:38it's really it what it should be anyway is just a one-off and they should get right back to
01:43contending
01:44for the stanley cup for the next several years so the fact that they've got a top 10 first round
01:48pick to play around with whatever they end up doing with it uh it's just kind of like a little
01:52extra drop in the bucket right now so uh for me for those who have not been in tune with
01:58the hockey
01:59lottery can you take us through what happened with the panthers why did they end up picking ninth
02:04was there chicanery with the leafs ending up number one how did that all go down yesterday
02:10so the way that the lottery works is they have two different draws one for the first pick and one
02:15for
02:15the second pick um all the teams that don't make the playoffs have a chance at moving up but you
02:21can only move up a maximum of 10 spots so only the worst 11 have a chance to get the
02:26first pick so
02:27that's the broad pick uh the panthers yesterday first the maples won the first draw for the first
02:33pick so they moved up to number one but they were already picking fifth so that didn't impact the
02:37panthers who were in eighth the second draw um san jose sharks won chris greer's brother mike greer gm of
02:44san jose sharks uh he won the second pick so the sharks moved up from ninth which was behind the
02:49panthers to second which bumped everybody else back one which is how the panthers got bumped from eighth
02:54to ninth uh i mean look it's it's cool that two different teams won it's it's depressingly hilarious
03:02that the canucks not only missed out on the first pick that they missed out on the first and the
03:06second
03:06pick is it just feels like that's the most unlucky franchise around right now uh but ultimately you know
03:11for those of us who are kind of entertained by a little bit of chaos seeing the leafs go from
03:17fifth
03:17to first and what that means and as you mentioned a day after their new you know hockey hierarchy was
03:22really trashed uh at least their new gm in a press conference up there uh it's an interesting kind of
03:28ebb and flow situation for for the maple leafs right now but i'm like i'm here for it i'm not
03:32worried
03:32about any other teams coming up and you know the panthers are going to be what they are uh regardless
03:37of
03:38what anybody else in in the league is going to be doing so in that regard not really too concerned
03:42uh but i think just in terms of the toronto maple leafs who are like one of the mechas of
03:46hockey uh
03:47in the situation they've been in but getting gavin mckenna who probably who they're gonna pick uh look
03:53i'm all for it i i just you know add a little chaos into your life uh and you know
03:56enjoy the show
03:58i was uh i've been noticing on hockey twitter that a lot of the american players who play for canadian
04:07teams all seem to be a little especially the ones that aren't playing anyone there's only
04:10canadians are left but feels like austin matthews he's not sure about his future heli book he's not
04:17sure about his future brady kachuk sick of the trade rumors and that of course will you know lead
04:23us to pick up our head like a prairie dog and look over there bill zito's looking at disgruntled people
04:28north of the border and think to himself does anybody want a top 10 pick does uh does do you
04:34think
04:34that uh that that does bill zito have the mechanisms to go big game hunting or does he
04:40use that trade for something a little bit more supplemental to the roster or do you think he
04:44uses it what do you what do you think would be uh the way the panthers lean with uh with
04:48with
04:49their maneuvers this year i'd be surprised if they end up taking the pick only because this team is in
04:55such win now mode that using that and flipping it into something that you can inject into the roster
05:01immediately that's going to help your stanley cup chances right now makes a lot of sense
05:05uh you mentioned some name that i think we're going to be tracking at least now between the draft
05:12uh in you know a little less than two months connor hellebuck you know obviously the panther
05:16situation with sergey bobrovsky he's an unrestricted free agent uh obviously both sides it's been well
05:21reported that both sides want to get something done and bob wants to stay in south florida um so i'd
05:27be
05:27really surprised if that doesn't happen but even still bob's going to be 30 but 38 years old at
05:31opening night uh next season they've already been limiting his starts over the last few years trying
05:36to keep him around the 50 to 55 range so to see them try to go out and get the
05:40next guy if you know
05:41connor hellebuck is something that they want to consider i'm all for that uh the idea of having that
05:46kind of goalie tandem and look we've seen bill zito in the past they've had what 14 million tied up
05:50with
05:50their goalies before the spencer knight trade so it's not like this team doesn't know how to invest in
05:54their goaltending and we have all the trust in the world in the goaltending excellence department
05:57who has just found goalie after goalie that has worked out here uh but the you talked about guys
06:02like austin matthews and brady kachuk two american captains of canadian teams right now both of whom
06:07are reportedly not happy with their situations uh you know there's talk about them getting pushed out
06:12of town by the media and by just what's been going on up there in their respective cities with austin
06:17matthews i'm curious how that changes now that toronto's getting the top pick probably bringing in
06:21gavin mckenna this young canadian superstar uh perhaps he'll stick around as opposed to what's
06:26happening with austin we'll see how it plays out uh but then you've got brady kachuk matthew kachuk's
06:30little brother up in ottawa it's you know been kind of clear that it hasn't been all uh you know
06:35roses
06:35and greenery and all that good stuff up there for him uh and you know who wouldn't want to come
06:39play
06:39with your brother on a team that's going to play for the stanley cup probably for the next few years
06:43so just to see for to have this option to see them have you know the potential like do i
06:48want to take
06:49the pick do i want to make the trade uh in the situation that they're already in considering how
06:53good this roster is it's just really cool and probably unfair to the rest of the lead but you
06:57know who cares so with and and i have like a different thought is that you know bringing somebody
07:05in a young player to kind of grow with sam muskiewicz and some of the young players lindell um
07:13to try to have these guys so that you're always there because if you have health you're competing
07:19it's not a player that you were missing all you needed was help so why wouldn't you just go ahead
07:25on
07:25and get a young player and kind of keep this thing going because if you keep doing it the way
07:30if you
07:30keep doing it that way and say hey we're trying to win now win now win now eventually
07:37it hits a wall but they have young time they have a lot of young talent to mix a good
07:43mix of young
07:44players and veterans so why not just bring another young player in
07:49yeah look it makes sense the only thing is with the nhl it's hard to get a guy that's going
07:54to be
07:54nhl ready within maybe a year or so of the draft it's rare uh maybe like a top you know
08:00one or two
08:00type guys that'll go straight to the lead but for the most part in hockey uh guys it's in
08:05it's going to take a year or two at least of seasoning like for defensemen it's going to take
08:08longer for goalie it's going to take longer so it's hard you don't often find like the
08:13air neck lads who can you know first overall pick he's playing in the league a couple of months later
08:17uh but to your point they are still going to be expected to be good for the next two three
08:23years
08:23so by the time this player would be ready to come into the nhl it would be a good time
08:28for
08:28florida to get some of that youth to come up and inject into the roster so uh that it certainly
08:33makes
08:33sense and if bill zito and his guys decide to pull the trigger on one of the guys that's going
08:38to be available you know around nine uh whether like keaton verhoff the defenseman from north dakota
08:43falls uh you know there's guys like caleb malhotra who's a really good center out of the ohl there's
08:48going to be some very good players available around that pick uh and yeah i'm just curious because i
08:54could really see it going either way i just personally think that based off of what's available it
08:59wouldn't surprise me to see zito make a move and inject a little bit more into the roster right
09:04away but really either way you know they're okay can i ask you because you know we we know the
09:10nba
09:10trade machine and having to like mess with salaries and whatnot and obviously you know the heat don't
09:16have a ton of guys that people aren't willing to move people like get everybody out of here just
09:19just revamp the panthers it's a little different like these are guys now that have won championships
09:24with you and it's hard for me to part feelings with making a big move so use your crystal ball
09:30a little bit if the panthers were to go big game hunting i've seen out there it might take a
09:36parting
09:36with a lundell it may take parting with uh one of the sam what would it take to get the
09:42whale this year
09:43that that would somebody want like could they do this and still keep the sams around does the salary
09:48cat work like that so let's just say it's brady kachuk for example what like what kind of
09:56haul is ottawa expecting because we remember when we traded for kachuk it took trading huberto who
10:01yes it worked out awesome for the panthers but that guy was a beloved panther at the time
10:06it's tough because for specifically for brady kachuk like he's going to have a lot of the power because
10:11you know he's got the no movement clause so he can basically say look this is where i want to
10:15go
10:15and if you want to make something work you know go ahead and do what you got to do uh
10:20in terms of
10:21who florida would give up it's hard to just looking at how the roster is made up and how guys
10:26are
10:26utilized throughout either of the the two sams that you mentioned play very crucial crucial roles
10:31like down the middle with barkov uh bennett and lundell like that makes florida incredibly difficult
10:38to defend and you know to defend against uh just because or excuse me to to deal with on a
10:44defensive
10:44side just because they're all so good to both ways and they can hit you deep uh yeah i mean
10:51thinking about guys that they could potentially you know give up in a deal like that like it's hard to
10:57even throw out names for the reason you said brennan because you become so emotionally attached to these
11:01guys but like maybe a carter verhage or somebody who plays a little bit more of an interchangeable role
11:05on the team uh yeah for for a guy like brady kachuk he he really would fit in well with
11:13the
11:13panthers just because he's very still but he's also very gritty uh he's growing into a very more
11:17controlled player than what we've seen in the past so it could fit but uh it's a big question of
11:23how
11:23much do you want to disrupt what you've got to bring in something like that whether it's a brady
11:27kachuk or a connor hellebuck or whatever uh because we've talked ad nauseum about how the chemistry with
11:32this team and the locker room with this team is such a big uh advantage and such a like a
11:37big
11:37contributing factor to why they've had so much success so you it's really difficult for bill
11:42zito in those in that regard just because you really have to make sure that you're not going
11:45to mess with the temperament of the team uh but i mean guys that are untouchable are like bark
11:50obviously bark up kachuk i don't think the sams would be traded just because like i said they play
11:54crucial roles i think anton lundell is absolutely untouchable uh unless somebody's offering like
12:00a conor mcdavid or you know macklin celebrini or something that's not going to happen
12:03uh just because they view him so highly uh he's still so young he's just going to be 24 i
12:08think
12:08on opening night we're looking at like we would look at like verhage lost a rain and like it would
12:15have to be even as good as those guys like that's probably the level like none of the top flight
12:19guys you you can't see bill zito putting somebody like that on the table for for anybody i unless it's
12:26like top five guys in the league type discussion that like nobody's doing because the panthers aren't
12:31trading their you know high high high end guys so it's hard to envision that happening so yeah
12:37i i agree with you that it would be one of those i don't want to say mid-tier guys
12:42because that's not
12:43what they are it's just in terms of roles on the team uh it's what are you willing to remove
12:48and what
12:48are you not let's uh bring you uh here to what i really wanted to get to which is making
12:53fun of the
12:53tampa bay lightning uh did you see yesterday andre vasileski uh being asked about his coach's
13:01comments of course john pooper my least favorite he uh he said that you know sometimes you lose
13:10on the scoreboard but not the game which is right up there with his team canada loss and this was
13:16his
13:16star goalie uh responding to that when asked by the media after the game sunday that the hockey
13:23gods have been in his corner a lot of times and it just wasn't in in that game and can
13:28you that based
13:29on i don't know if you looked at replays of the two goals that went in they were just kind
13:34of crazy
13:34bounces is that just kind of how it goes sometimes i feel like that's our excuse the last like few
13:38years
13:39like hockey guys but bounces yeah like bad bounce for sure but i mean that's at the end of the
13:46day
13:46like
13:49you know it's you just it's like a broken record over and over and again so
13:58i know we have to have to mind up here wow
14:05when i saw that the first time as soon as i saw that eye roll before he even answered his
14:09question
14:09when they're talking he's oh like you knew something good was coming i love assy i i think
14:14he's great uh he was but i also love john cooper while they were reading the quote he started rolling
14:19his eyes right so you knew but but here's the deal like the skin that management has in the game
14:28where you could just shrug your shoulders and move on is a lot different than the player
14:34it hurts nobody cares about a damn bad bounce it only matters if you win or lose and and you
14:42could
14:42you know maybe bs yourself once or twice but it's like he said i'm tired of hearing this
14:50i'm tired of hearing bad bounces and this and that and whatever right it's it almost seems like
14:57the organization has a built-in cop-out or a built-in excuse to lose without understanding like
15:04these players don't want to lose these players are tired of it they want to turn it around
15:09and would rather not have management talking about it dims the brakes right yeah like you don't want
15:15to hear management saying that and i get his frustration too because i mean you know you're the
15:20goalie on a team that during the regular season scored three and a half goals a game and then they
15:24went out in the playoffs they scored one goal in game seven one goal one game six two goals and
15:28even
15:28like that's not easy and when you're vasilevsky when you're out there and he played so good in that
15:34series he made some ridiculous saves and to have you lose basically your whole season on a couple
15:38bad bounces yeah because your team couldn't figure out how to keep scoring so yeah i could get his
15:44frustration that's not the hockey gods that's just a team figuring out how to shut you down and when you're
15:48a
15:48goalie what can you do about that right wait a minute you like john cooper why he's a great coach
15:55he's a good guy he's a coach of the arrival he's a good guy i don't like him man yeah
16:03i wish him no
16:03success i just i just think that sometimes with our explanations of sports we try to get too cute
16:12and management got cute with an explanation and i could just look by the player that like yo man
16:20like he's what you probably want to say i wish management would just shut the hell up right
16:30like he's getting hot he's getting his hat moved his eyes rolled so high like he was not ready for
16:37that i did not want to deal with him uh go follow david dwork uh this off season the hockey
16:42news uh is
16:44where you guys can read his work you also can uh check him out on the hockey show with roy
16:48bellamy
16:48they're doing a fantastic job covering the playoffs and i'm sure all the off-season activity for the
16:53panthers we appreciate you buddy thank you thanks good to see you boys take care
