00:00Steve Staios, apparently is the GM of the Ottawa Senators, and they remain handily above the Sabres in the cup
00:10odds, even though they did take a dip, giving Brady Kachuk away for draft picks.
00:17It's a lot of draft picks, but man, that is not, it's hard to feel any kind of good about
00:23that.
00:23I mean, they've been a playoff team two years in a row. Sure, they didn't get to 100 points or
00:29109 like the Sabres or Montreal or even Boston, but still, they're building toward something, and that's the captain.
00:39It's a nice haul of stuff, but none of it, you know, Staios, I think, goes on at some point
00:46today in talking about being forced to make this trade.
00:50Like, we'll see, you know, they can turn those picks into something immediate, too.
00:53Like, those are good assets that maybe they can move.
00:56Are they in each of the next three seasons?
01:00No, I believe 9 and 25.
01:02There's two that are this year, and then it's after, I think.
01:07That's better.
01:07I think, because Florida traded for 25 earlier in the day.
01:13They sent Sam Sakevich to, I forget where, but they made a trade earlier in the day that got them
01:20one of the picks that they sent.
01:21Okay.
01:23But, man, it just, you know, you think you're building toward something.
01:27This is the fear, you know, you live with.
01:29This is us with Jack Eichel for the minute he got here.
01:32For some people, I go, well, just wait until he wants to leave.
01:35And, you know, eventually he did.
01:38And this thing with Kachuk felt like a ticking time bomb almost from the minute his brother forced a trade
01:47out of Calgary to Florida.
01:50And then I think, like Steyos even says there, I think just the appetite for the fan base and just
01:57Canada in general.
01:59Like, I think it's hard on American players that are in Canada after the Olympics.
02:05So you've got this sort of built-in friction now that you just, I think, want to alleviate.
02:12And so there you are.
02:15So it's not frictionless, apparently, the situation.
02:18Right.
02:19Well, it's not frictionless.
02:22So I think, you know, on one hand, you can easily look at Florida and go,
02:27oh, my gosh, they're building a super team, you know, because they have the Kachuk brothers now.
02:32And their forward lines do look intimidating.
02:35I think Florida was going to be back anyways.
02:39I think, overall, this is a net positive if you're a Sabres fan, because I think it really damages Ottawa.
02:46And I don't know what, maybe they can, on the fly here, turn some of this stuff that they got
02:52back in assets
02:53into something to help them immediately.
02:55Or maybe they can have a great summer spending Brady Kachuk's money on someone else.
03:00But I think right now, if they can't pull a whale into the boat, they've been weakened.
03:06And they were, to me, it just eliminates, I think, for now, a team that I think,
03:13I don't think you've got to really worry about them right now.
03:15And I think Florida, with or without Brady Kachuk, to me, was going to be a team that was going
03:20to be back in,
03:22you know, living in the area that the Sabres in Montreal and Tampa were living in all season this past
03:27season.
03:27Well, I'm sure that USA-Canada dynamic can be correct, you know, depending on the guy,
03:33whether that's Brady Kachuk or Connor Hellebuck or someone else.
03:36Right.
03:37I mean, they're also very small markets.
03:39They're not in Toronto or Vancouver.
03:41They're in Winnipeg and Ottawa.
03:43And that can be enough.
03:44And that's what we can relate to.
03:47I mean, Cage Thompson and Alex Tuck are Americans.
03:50But they're also in a small market.
03:53And Jack Eichel is American.
03:54And he wanted to go.
03:56And he did.
03:57Like, the players have a lot of power.
03:59They don't have all of it.
04:01And I don't know.
04:02Like, this one, I like the sex appeal of three firsts, at least.
04:08I'd like to get a Peyton Krebs back or somebody in a trade like this,
04:12where I have somebody that's maybe been good in the minor leagues that I can think about.
04:17But it's three firsts.
04:19It feels like the kind of trade to me where if Kachuk has so much control in the situation that
04:27he's going to,
04:28I'm like, Florida, okay?
04:29Got it?
04:30I'm going to hang up and listen.
04:31Florida.
04:31And so, here's the Ottawa management.
04:35And we're kind of up against a wall here.
04:39What will you give us?
04:41Or probably, I like this idea more from the other side, from Florida.
04:44What do you want?
04:46This feels like a trade where Florida says, what do you want?
04:52And Ottawa's like, three firsts and a second.
04:55And Florida's like, done.
04:59I mention the name Jacob Sanderson a lot from ADP Chasing.
05:02We do a podcast on Tuesday nights on fantasy football.
05:06And he is a Celtics fan.
05:08And he's tweeting a lot about Giannis and Jalen Brown, all of that.
05:14And Jacob's like, it just feels like the Celtics are sort of nitpicking.
05:18And I'm like, just go be Florida.
05:20What do you want?
05:22Okay.
05:23Name your price.
05:24And then maybe they'll do it.
05:26And then you can be done.
05:28Unless it's insane.
05:29Is three firsts insane?
05:31No.
05:32I mean, it's the Rams.
05:34Right.
05:35It's two this year, by the way.
05:37Nine and 25.
05:38The other one is conditional and not until 2029.
05:42Oh, I can't see that far ahead.
05:44And the second round pick is 2027.
05:47Okay.
05:48Still.
05:49What do you want?
05:50Sounds like two firsts then.
05:51And a second and then something in the distant future.
05:54Yeah.
05:54During the next World Cup or something.
05:56Like three drafts from now.
05:57Yeah, fine.
05:58Or four even.
05:58Whatever.
05:59Maybe Florida will be bad then.
06:02They'll be old.
06:03Yeah.
06:03And Ottawa wins on that pick.
06:05Well, I wonder what the conditional might be if it's lottery protected or some nonsense like that.
06:11So that may be whatever.
06:12I don't know what the conditions are.
06:13But it's just all, you know, it's two right away and then nothing for four more years, which is maybe
06:18a little tougher.
06:19Four more drafts.
06:20Yeah.
06:20Anyway.
06:20Right.
06:21Right.
06:22Well, you know, when we talk about the Rams or when we all talk about the Rams and their draft
06:27pick stuff, I think they get a lot of love for it.
06:31But I love my draft picks and I could, I could be Ottawa here and feel like I'm not going
06:37to keep the player because I know what this is.
06:40And, you know, in private, I know what he's saying and I know that I'm not, I don't have a
06:44lot of leverage here.
06:45Yeah.
06:46So I'll take three firsts and then do the next thing.
06:49I'll tell you what this does for, I have mostly, as it turned out this year, you know, I think
06:55for a few years I was, I was mostly, I would describe myself as Ed
07:00admiring, if not flat out liking the Florida Panthers, like the build of their team.
07:04I liked how they played.
07:05I liked how, I loved how they won the president's trophy and then traded their leading score.
07:11Like that, that was the start of all this.
07:13They had a great year, got knocked out and went, yeah, this, this isn't going to do it.
07:20And they pivoted, which is a very hard thing to do when you're already, you know, 110 point team or
07:25whatever they were when they won the president's trophy.
07:27It's like, you've got, you've got my admiration and respect for doing that and how they play and Reinhardt.
07:35Like I've mostly have liked them.
07:37This feels just a little too much like LeBron and Wade and Bosch.
07:44And like, I, it's a, it's a, it's a tipping point for me where Florida, I'm done sort of hat
07:52tipping them.
07:53Like this, this is an advantage they have because they were able to pull off the first Kachuk trade and
08:00now like they're in the driver's seat to get his brother.
08:04And I don't know, like, I feel like now the rest of the league has got one arm tied behind
08:08their back and I'm no longer really respecting you, Florida.
08:11Like, I feel like whatever advantage, the taxes, what it just feels a little greasy to me.
08:18So that's Vegas too.
08:20Yeah.
08:20I think I'm done sort of, you know, like the expiration date has been reached on my admiration of Florida.
08:27Um, they're going to be, admiration has hit its expiration.
08:31Right.
08:31They are going to be insufferable with those two guys there.
08:34That might be still a lot of fun to watch in a certain way, but like, I'm, I'm going to
08:39have a very hard time, you know, not being annoyed by it.
08:43I think mostly.
08:45So this is me with most things.
08:47Yeah.
08:47So that, that for me, that's, and I wonder if like, you know, how many like-minded hockey fans there
08:53would be the sort of slowly nodding at the Florida Panthers, respecting what they're doing.
08:57And now it just feels a little like, you know, I don't know.
09:00It just, it just feels gluttony a little bit.
09:04Like, I think they were already going to be great again.
09:07And now, I don't know.
09:09This is our lives though.
09:12We're never one of these teams.
09:14We're never going to be one of these teams.
09:15Even the bills.
09:16Right.
09:17I mean, as good as Allen is, as good as they've been, they, they, they've done some of it, but
09:24they're not going to have Lord, be able to Lord,
09:27Lord over the NFL.
09:29Right.
09:30Von Miller never, never did lure DeAndre Hopkins or DeAndre Beckham Jr.
09:34No, no.
09:35That never happened.
09:36And it was never surprising that that didn't happen.
09:38Right.
09:38That's just what it's always been.
09:40Yeah.
09:41You can draft, you can hit the jackpot at quarterback and, you know, do the best you can after that.
09:46One thought I did have when this happened, you know, yesterday, whatever, yesterday afternoon or evening, when we learned about
09:53this Brady Kachuk to Florida trade was, you know, what is that?
09:58Calabook may want to leave Winnipeg.
10:00Larkin wants to leave Detroit.
10:02Not that Detroit's a Canadian market.
10:04Like we've got this sort of team USA.
10:07There's already rumblings about Wierenski and Columbus.
10:10Is he going to sign an extension there?
10:11Are they going to try to get out ahead of it?
10:13Maybe that waits until next off season or something, but there'll be drama there.
10:17One thought I had was, all right, what I need here is Tage Thompson to get on the phone with
10:22Dylan Larkin.
10:23Just be like, dude, do you see what these guys are doing in Florida?
10:26All right.
10:27Look, they don't have room for you.
10:29Vegas probably doesn't have room.
10:30Come to Buffalo and we'll, you know, you'll be building a Guardians of the Galaxy here and you're on my
10:37team.
10:38Okay.
10:39I don't know if that's realistic or not, but it was one thought I had.
10:42Like, go recruit somebody to, you know, waive their no trade to come on over here and help you beat
10:48them.
10:49Well, it's an exciting idea.
10:51Does Thompson strike you in the slightest as having that personality?
10:55Not me.
10:56I just, any sort of a commanding presence in any, it does not seem like it.
11:00So.
11:01They were lined dates.
11:02He will shoot.
11:03He will shoot.
11:04He doesn't always pass.
11:05He's a shooter.
11:06But I don't know.
11:07That's probably not fair.
11:08Yeah.
11:09I mean, that's a tough sell though.
11:11Sure.
11:11Buffalo is a tough sell.
11:12And so is Ottawa.
11:13And that's just never going to not be true.
11:15Right.
11:17803-0550.
11:18Mike Schopen, the Bulldog.
