00:00Thank you, Jeremy Otto, with Kenny Cott, the Hatchet Man, David Hull, he's Rico Beard, I'm Stoney, in for Mike
00:09Valenti, ladies and gentlemen, it's opening day, and I gotta say something, granted, the person or belief that I'm gonna
00:22mention is more important than opening day,
00:25but everybody who I've seen around these parts, I believe, are wearing some sort of tiger's paraphernalia, I'm wearing a
00:36tiger hoodie and a tiger hat, Rico's doing the same with his hat, Kenny's got a hat, you know what,
00:43Hatchet, where's your tiger stuff?
00:47You're wearing God, be God, and I understand, God's very important to you and to a lot of people, and
00:51I'm not gonna say that God is not more important than opening day, but it's opening day!
00:57Stoney just said his school pool's more important than God, two, four, eight, five, three, six!
01:03God lasts more than 69, 99 pitches!
01:08I'll tell you why I didn't wear anything tigers, because it's because of the people around this office, if you
01:16wear it, they're gonna stop you, talk, oh, how do you think the tigers are gonna do this?
01:21I don't want to talk to anyone, so I didn't wear anything so that people won't stop me.
01:25just leave me alone let me do my job whatever happened to love thy neighbor david the mike
01:31valenti school of uh interactions no you know i've been this way for a long time i can't stand
01:36him i've in the time that i've known david there are certain things that are for sure
01:42david does not give in to what everybody else does he will do the opposite just because
01:48everybody else is saying left david goes right i get it but i would have i don't know if i
01:54would
01:54have worn both today but opening day it's i don't know it's makes you feel good i mean if it
02:00was
02:00home i'd probably feel better but opening day you just it's cool but it's something special about
02:07baseball season starting and maybe it's just me i still when they're here that feels like opening
02:13day yeah you're right this doesn't feel like opening day yes before you start sending in all the ticket
02:19the game counts i get it i'm talking about me it doesn't feel like it doesn't have that feel yet
02:26well it's not the holiday because it's not the holiday it's not the party that is downtown detroit
02:31correct and opening day this is just kind of okay but they're playing baseball and it feels almost as
02:39if it's just another spring training game but i think it's kind of smart for teams who
02:46inhabit cold colder climates like here to start on the west coast or start to south or start in the
02:53dome i think that's smart obviously every team can't do that but the one thing i will agree with you
02:59on
03:00and this is two years in a row that they've started on the west coast okay play play the
03:09play the a's or the angels then the nationally interleague play two years in a row to start
03:15your season oh yeah dodgers last year and the padres i mean yeah okay they played the world series in
03:201984 yeah we get it we know um the with the schedule i understand you're playing every team anyway
03:28they might not get it over with i think three of the tigers first four series uh are on the
03:34road
03:35are against national league teams diamondbacks and then the home openers against the st louis cardinals
03:41yeah oh remember when they played in 2006 world series 1968 yes yeah i'll have all that crap
03:50yeah so i i opening day just i don't know it just makes you smile even when the team had
03:57no
03:57expectations you still smiled because it was opening day you thought hey you know maybe
04:03something crazy is going to happen you know that's well hope springs eternal i mean at this point nobody's
04:08done anything bad and yeah everybody can sit there and say well what if so that's the anticipation of
04:15opening day plus like i said when it's here it's the holiday people go downtown and yeah i i understand
04:21that's
04:21why it is but it doesn't quite have that same feeling as it will in what like 10 9 days
04:28or 8 days
04:29from now yes and i'm glad that this is an afternoon contest so it should be a short show i
04:35get a short
04:35show for maybe the first or second time in my life but here for you it's it's not just that
04:41it's just that
04:41the games the game should be over by the time the uh nc double a start tonight uh the big
04:49return of
04:50joe dumars and troy weaver to the lca i don't know if they'll be there but the pelicans are yeah
04:55i seriously doubt joe shows up i know he wants nothing i've never seen anybody so turned up no i
05:03know it's no it's crazy it was uh you know crazy with a weird game last night but uh they
05:08can't win
05:08them all uh our telephone number is 248-539-9797 and as um jeremy auto mentioned he gave the tigers
05:18lineup
05:19and starting at third base is kevin mcgonigal i kind of thought he would start it short but
05:25doesn't make a difference he's in the lineup he can play anywhere yeah and i give the tigers credit
05:30they didn't care about service time they said you know what we're a good team but we're even better
05:37if kevin mcgonigal is part of this team from the get-go and that is something that i think we've
05:43been
05:43waiting to hear for a long long time little things like service time not mattering they want to win
05:50and they want to win this year now there are reasons for that besides just the obvious i mean you
05:56want to
05:57get it done with scoobal because chances are he won't be here after this year and there might be a
06:02lockout next year so whatever but yeah it's kind of cool to see kevin mcgonigal and i know people are
06:08going to overreact either way to how he plays tonight today and and you know early on in his
06:15career he hits a home run today you'll have the obligatory he's on pace to hit 162 home runs oh
06:21i
06:21know yeah i know i hate that but yes whether he goes out there i think more people if if
06:28he has a bad
06:29day i think people are really going to be accepting of that saying okay you know one game yeah but
06:34if he
06:34goes out there he's three for four oh my goodness i know look he hasn't played triple a yet okay
06:41this is a big stop i mean look there are many players who haven't done it i mean oh okay
06:48i'd
06:48never played anywhere in the minor leagues but yes there are players who've gone to the majors without
06:53playing any triple a there's not that many though uh and he is one of those guys and i know
07:00you guys and
07:01others like to bring up the wyatt langford thing all the time and with good reason uh the reason
07:06the tigers drafted max clark instead of wyatt langford had to do with economics not that they
07:11were too cheap but they wanted to have enough money that they could guarantee they'd be able to get
07:15kevin mcgonigal with that you know bridge pick whatever they you want to call it the competitive
07:21balance pick and they knew they made an agreement obviously and that's why clark went for less money
07:28than langford you know and hopefully if mcgonigal is as good as everybody thinks and max clark ends up
07:34making the majors then it'll be a win-win but you know i i can't wait to see him play
07:40i mean it's just
07:42you know you see the highlights from spring training and everything you hear i mean it's not just you know
07:50local stuff i mean the fact that nationally he's the favorite to win the american league rookie
07:56as well yeah and for the last two years you've heard you know baseball america and this website
08:03and then all they talk about is kevin mcgonigal stunning i think he may have been the most anticipated
08:09tiger in a long time that we just could not wait to see because of all the hype and then
08:18it was okay
08:18is he actually going to make this the opening day roster he did and now he's you know playing third
08:23but batting sixth yeah looking forward to yeah and usually you get guys like you know like verlander
08:30made his debut uh in 2005 right in cleveland i think he had like a couple of games maybe and
08:41then he made
08:41the team people were surprised him and zamai in 2006 so there wasn't that i don't recall the
08:49anticipation and build up especially because most people didn't think the tigers are going to be very
08:54good that season now you have a team that has won a playoff round in two straight years and you
09:01a team
09:01that is a little bit weak offensively and you had a guy who can hit field play voluminous positions on
09:10the infield yeah i mean i think the last time for me it was may have been torque i was
09:17very anxious to
09:18see number one pick like home runs okay let's see if he could actually this will you get a home
09:25run
09:26hitter coming from torque and so yeah when his first at bat that first couple of games right yes
09:31all right very anxious to see that i i would put that there mcgonagall there because we've been
09:38hearing so much about this and right or wrong there's a lot of hype that comes with him correct
09:44he didn't write his own hype no but it's there hopefully he lives up to this yeah i mean hopefully
09:52he lives up to his uh his idol which is second baseman that chase utley because he grew up in
09:57the uh suburban philadelphia area like i did uh but i don't know the del the delco delaware county
10:04delco yeah you ever watch the um the hbo the one with kate winslet mayor of east town yeah you
10:11see
10:12that that takes place in delco oh okay you know they talk funny you know water towel gas with a
10:19z
10:19it's not a rich neighborhood no it's not no there are parts of delco that are nicer than others i
10:26was about to say stunning i just know you lived in a palace no no no i definitely did not
10:30live in a
10:30palace growing up it was i was nicer than where they lived my part of delaware county was nicer to
10:37them where that was portrayed in the in in the series but there are definitely areas a lot nicer than
10:44where i grew up i didn't go up in a modest home was okay three bedroom home i mean it
10:49was fine
10:49you know i had a nice did you have a moat no no no moat no i i didn't no
10:56my my parents didn't
10:59have uh a lot until after i got to college all right all right guys is this the most anticipated
11:06uh tiger start of a rookie that you've been waiting for or even in detroit any detroit athlete okay
11:16and you know to me there's only one that even comes close to it and we'll get to that uh
11:21coming
11:21up next our telephone number is 248-539-9797 it's the valenti show with rico stoney here in for
