00:04Tonight, Jon Favreau and James Taylor with the Kletos!
00:11And now, Jimmy Kimmel!
00:15Jimmy Kimmel Live!
00:41It's very good to have you here.
00:43I got up very early this morning because it is our son Billy's birthday.
00:48He turned nine years old today, so he was very excited.
00:53So last night, my wife, Molly, is laying in bed with him.
00:57Is it laying in bed or is it lying in bed?
00:59They're in bed and she's lying to him.
01:02And our daughter Jane walks in.
01:03She's 11 and she says, hey, Billy, ask mom where babies come from.
01:09And walks right out of the room.
01:12My wife's like, my wife's stunned.
01:15And Billy goes, well, where do babies come from?
01:17And as my wife is figuring out how to handle this little bomb,
01:21Jane dropped on her and left there.
01:22Alexa, you know, the Amazon speaker deals.
01:26It makes a bleep and says, Jane is dropping in on Billy's room.
01:30This is like an intercom system.
01:32But nobody says anything on the other end.
01:34Molly says, Jane, are you there?
01:36Jane says, yeah, I'm here.
01:37I'm listening in.
01:38I don't want to miss this.
01:42Says, forget I'm here.
01:43Keep talking.
01:44Billy, ask any questions you want.
01:48Luckily, Billy declined to hear the whole deal.
01:51Did you give your son the talk, Guillermo?
01:54Yes, of course.
01:55You did it yourself?
01:55Yes, yes.
01:56I told him, look, when two people are in love and then they make sex, that's how baby comes from.
02:03I have to let him.
02:04You know what?
02:05All right there.
02:05Well, I have to let him that way, you know.
02:08I have to tell you, it feels like my birthday tonight because one of my all-time favorites, the great
02:13James Taylor, is here.
02:15James is here.
02:18Ahead of his tour with his all-star band and he's promoting his upcoming UFC fight on the White House
02:26lawn.
02:28The White House is not a fun place to be right now.
02:30The Strait of Hormuz is like Toys R Us.
02:34Nobody has any idea if it's still open or not.
02:37The ceasefire was scheduled to end tomorrow night.
02:40Last night, the president said it was highly unlikely he would extend the truce.
02:45He said if a deal wasn't reached, Iran was going to be bombed like Kash Patel at the Poodle Room
02:50in Vegas.
02:52And that line in the sand was reinforced by his tween-age press secretary.
02:57President Trump has proven before, he does not bluff.
03:01When he makes a promise, he follows through on it.
03:03And I'm not sure why, after 10 years of covering this president, the American media still cannot understand.
03:09When President Trump says he's going to do something, he's going to do it.
03:13That's right.
03:15Said he was going to end the war in Ukraine in one day.
03:18He said he's going to release his tax returns.
03:20The new health care plan.
03:22The wall.
03:22Greenland.
03:23And this is a man whose word is as good as the gold commode he sits on.
03:27And then, of course, about three hours ago, he went ahead and extended the ceasefire.
03:33He wrote,
03:39Well, you know what, it is Taco Tuesday, so why not?
04:04What Trump is doing right now, it's like if you hired a plumber to install a new toilet and the
04:13plumber tells you it'll only take an hour to put it in.
04:15And then there you are eight weeks later and you still have a hole in the ground.
04:19So you call him and he says, installation's going great, everything's perfect, ahead of schedule.
04:24In fact, he actually finished the job back in March.
04:27But as soon as he can get his vice plumber over there to flush it, your bowel movements will go
04:33down better than ever before.
04:35Definitely better than Joe Biden.
04:37OK.
04:38CNN reported that they were close to a deal before the weekend to end all this.
04:43But Trump derailed it with his crazy posts.
04:46Anonymous White House officials told CNN the negotiations have been harmed by the fact that Trump is live-tweeting them
04:53like a ninth-grade girl watching Euphoria.
04:56I wonder if they've considered getting him one of those tin can phones like the kids have that are not
05:01on the Internet.
05:02The president has been all over the place on this.
05:04He told ABC News J.D. Vance wouldn't be part of the negotiations over there.
05:08At the same time as people were saying J.D. Vance would be part of the negotiations, he's obviously either
05:14not in the loop or just ignoring the loop.
05:17And so I am sure his people absolutely love it when he picks up the phone like he did today
05:23to call into Squawk Box on CNBC.
05:26I just looked at a little chart.
05:28World War I, four years and three months.
05:30World War II, six years.
05:32Korean War, three years.
05:34Vietnam, 19 years.
05:35Iraq, eight years.
05:37I'm five months.
05:39OK?
05:40Five months.
05:40Yeah, come on, guys.
05:42Quagmires take time.
05:44You have to let them bake.
05:45It's such a crazy thing to say comparing it.
05:48And not even correct.
05:49He's not five months into it.
05:51He's two months.
05:51He doesn't even know how long this war, that's been going on too long, has been going on.
06:00Not only, wait till you hear this, not only is he bragging about the ten wars he has allegedly ended,
06:06he is now giving himself credit for ending wars from more than 50 years ago.
06:11I would have won Vietnam very quickly.
06:14I would have if I were president.
06:16That's right.
06:17The man who actually dodged the draft to stay out of Vietnam, who got a note from a podiatrist that
06:25rented office space from his dad to claim he had bone spurs,
06:29even though he was on the football, baseball, basketball, and soccer teams at the military academy his parents sent him
06:36to.
06:36Had a young Donald Trump not sustain that incredibly well-timed boo-boo on his foot,
06:43not only would he have fought in the war in Vietnam, he would have risen straight to the top and
06:47won it very quickly for the United States.
06:50And if he had been captain of the Titanic, Leo DiCaprio would be alive today.
06:59He's flailing.
07:01I mentioned last night, Trump has fallen out with many of his most loyal maggots,
07:06including Tucker Carlson, who went so far as to apologize for ever supporting him in the first place.
07:12You and me and millions of people like us are the reason this is happening right now.
07:16Yes.
07:18So I do think it's like a moment to wrestle with our own consciences.
07:25You know, we'll be tormented by it for a long time.
07:27I will be.
07:29And I want to say I'm sorry for misleading people.
07:32And it was not intentional.
07:34That's all I'll say.
07:34That's big.
07:35I mean, Tucker Carlson apologizing for helping Trump get elected.
07:39I believe they call that liar's remorse.
07:43Tucker also admitted he's in a same-sex relationship with a green M&M.
07:47So it was very...
07:49All the coops are breaking ranks.
07:52Marge Taylor Greene, Alex Jones, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, and now Tucker.
07:56And that was his brother, Buckley.
07:58Did anyone know Tucker had a brother, Buckley?
08:01Tucker and Buckley, that is as white as it gets.
08:06That means it doesn't get any other than that.
08:11Their parents were an ascot and a monocle.
08:15But lest you think Tucker is a completely changed man, don't worry.
08:19He's still plenty nuts.
08:20Doctors are like the worst people in America.
08:23Because they break them at the outset.
08:26Exactly.
08:26They make them complicit in a true crime.
08:28Yes.
08:29And once you're complicit, it's like you can't join MS-13 until you kill somebody.
08:32You can't be an OBGYN until you murder a baby.
08:35Then you're like in on it.
08:39Thanksgiving at the Carlson's must be a barrel of laughs.
08:43Doctors are the worst people.
08:44I hope that when Tucker Carlson shows up at an emergency room one day, all he hears from
08:50the doctors is this.
09:17Sometimes laughter is the worst medicine.
09:20Back at the White House, the ranty Christ took a break from insulting the folk today to release
09:26a pre-recorded reading from the Bible as part of a week-long event called America Reads
09:32the Bible.
09:33They had Trump read it.
09:35The White House has asked Americans to pray for an hour a week.
09:38Oh, believe me, since he took office, we've been praying for at least that.
09:46As you know, as his followers know, has a very personal relationship with the Bible.
09:51Every night before bed, he takes the Bible from his nightstand.
09:55It burns his hand and he goes back to sleep.
09:57And it shall be answered, because they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought
10:04them forth out of the land of Egypt and laid hold on other gods and worshiped them and
10:10served them.
10:11Therefore, has he brought all this evil upon them.
10:24Sometimes God works in ways that aren't so mysterious.
10:27President Dr. Jesus has also been praying for Spirit Airlines, which is currently facing
10:32liquidation.
10:33Spirit Airlines, for those who have not flown on it, is like a regular airline, but every
10:38seat is a middle seat.
10:40Trump said he would love for somebody to buy it and suggested that maybe the government
10:44could step in and help.
10:46That's how he asked for another free plane, is maybe the government will help.
10:50Donald Trump, in many ways, is the spirit airline of presidents, so it makes sense that
10:55he would get involved in this.
10:57You know, airlines have been hit hard by rising fuel costs and fewer people wanting to visit
11:01the United States.
11:02Meanwhile, you remember those big, beautiful tariffs?
11:05So in February, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump's tariffs were illegal and had to be paid
11:09back, which means our government, which means we now owe up to $175 billion in refunds.
11:17Over 56,000 companies have registered to get that money back, and to no one's surprise,
11:23the tariff refund portal, the website, doesn't work.
11:28One business owner said, I can't even get to the point where I'd receive an error message
11:33because the portal is down.
11:34The website is so bad, it can't even load the page that tells you it can't load the page.
11:39And while Quentin Tariff Tino is doing his best to skip these companies on refunds for
11:45money, he said China and the others were going to pay in the first place.
11:49Inflation is up, according to the Consumer Price Index, which is interesting because I
11:53seem to remember him telling us it will be down.
11:55You remember this story about the old lady and her apples?
11:59I tell a story about a woman.
12:00And she got three apples, an old woman.
12:03Three apples, an elderly woman brings them up to the counter.
12:06Three apples, that's what she lives on.
12:08And she brought them up to the cash register and she looked at the woman and she said,
12:14is that the right price?
12:15And then realizes that price has gone up by 40 percent.
12:19And then she says, oh, I can't afford it.
12:20She brings one apple back.
12:21She didn't have enough money for one of the apples.
12:23She brought it back to the refrigeration.
12:25She buys two apples instead of three.
12:27And she bought two apples.
12:28That shouldn't be happening in our country.
12:31No, it should not.
12:32Now, I assume this was not a true story, but we did some digging and we managed to find
12:37the woman with the three apples.
12:41Her name is Mary Aldrich.
12:43She's from Fresno and we have her with us live now.
12:46Hi, Mary.
12:49Thank you for joining us tonight.
12:53It's no bother.
12:54So how are you doing these days?
12:57I'm doing just fine.
12:59I'm glad to hear that.
13:00But I see you have a big bowl of apples there.
13:03Yes, I do like apples very much.
13:05OK, now I'm wondering, you know, before when Joe Biden was president, you had to put an apple
13:11back because you couldn't afford it.
13:13That's true.
13:15My Social Security didn't go very far with Biden's inflation.
13:18OK, but inflation is still very high today.
13:21How do you afford all those apples?
13:24Excuse me?
13:25I said, how do you afford all those apples?
13:29Oh, I give handjobs.
13:36Excuse me.
13:38I'm sorry.
13:38What did you say?
13:39I said, I give handjobs to men to make ends meet.
13:45Oh, my God.
13:46I do it in the alley behind the supermarket.
13:49Men pull up.
13:50I get in their cars and get to work.
13:53May I ask how old a woman you are?
13:57Old enough.
13:59And when my work is done, I take the money.
14:03And do you know what I do with it?
14:05You buy apples?
14:07I buy f***ing apples.
14:10This is incredibly depressing.
14:13But I thank you for talking to us, Mary.
14:16Thank you, sweetheart.
14:18And if you're ever in Fresno, I'm behind the big green dumpster at Bon's.
14:23Well, that's very kind of your offer, Mary.
14:25I wish you all the apples you can eat.
14:28We have a good show tonight.
14:30A real-life American president, Mr. James Taylor, is with us.
14:34And we will be right back with John Favreau.
14:46All right, fellow man, tonight, one of the all-time greats.
14:49And if you don't believe it, you can see him on tour with his all-star band,
14:53live starting this Sunday night at the Yamaha Theater here in L.A.
14:56James Taylor is here with us this evening.
15:00It's not an album, by the way.
15:03No, it's not.
15:03It looks like an album, but it's just a piece of cardboard.
15:07You cannot buy this, so don't bother looking.
15:10Tomorrow night, we'll be joined by Adam Scott
15:13and the governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, will be here.
15:16Our first guest tonight is a master of the Nerdiverse.
15:20He is friend to Spider-Man and director of the newest Star Wars duo,
15:25The Mandalorian and Grogu, opens in theaters May 22nd.
15:29Please welcome Jon Favreau.
15:45How are you?
15:47Good to see you.
15:48Nice to see you.
15:49I don't see you that much.
15:50We text a lot, but I don't see you that much.
15:52We text, but only about food.
15:54Only about food.
15:55That's right.
15:56About food, kitchen equipment.
15:58You don't know, but Jimmy's actually the kind of, he's not a chef, but he's friends with a lot of
16:08chefs.
16:09Yes.
16:10But among the not chefs in Hollywood, he's top tier, and we all kind of, yeah, yeah, for sure.
16:15Well, I think of you as top tier, and I appreciate your saying that.
16:17I'm half Italian.
16:20Same here.
16:20New York, and I have to, there's only one person I reach out to.
16:24I'm like, are you doing the Feast of the Seven Fishes?
16:26And then I feel very sad because he shows me photographs of his whole spread that he himself makes.
16:34Yeah, I do like to do, yeah.
16:35So what was in your Feast of the Seven Fishes?
16:38Oh, everything.
16:39You know what I've done?
16:39I used to, you know, I got sick.
16:40I got up to like 23 fishes.
16:42It got, it became too much.
16:44And then I decided to challenge myself and try to just do seven fishes.
16:49So for those of you who don't know, or aren't Italian, at Christmas.
16:53We apologize.
16:53Yeah, sorry, sorry.
16:55We can cut all this out.
16:56But you have a big pasta dish.
16:59Yes.
16:59And it's traditional Italian families that have fish on Christmas.
17:03Right, Christmas Eve.
17:03And if you could work, the more, Christmas Eve, excuse me.
17:06And the more fish variants that are in your dish, the more Christmas-y it is.
17:11Now, when I started racking the numbers up, I started cheating.
17:14Like, if I'd make a Caesar salad and I had anchovies in there, I counted that as a fish.
17:18I'm not sure if it does.
17:20Yes.
17:20If I had two different kinds of oysters, I'd count each oyster separately.
17:24Yes.
17:24You know?
17:25Do you do that, or you go pretty...
17:27No, I usually get catering.
17:29Oh, you do?
17:29Yeah.
17:30Okay.
17:32That's good, too.
17:33You were in Las Vegas last week.
17:35Yes, I was.
17:35I was in Vegas this weekend, also.
17:37Were you?
17:37You were there, though, for a big deal.
17:39I was there for CinemaCon.
17:40CinemaCon.
17:41To present the Mandalorian and Grogu footage to the crowd.
17:43Now, it was the first time.
17:46We don't know how it works.
17:48You've got a room full of very hardcore fans.
17:52Yes.
17:53And theater owners.
17:54And theater owners.
17:54It's really a trade event.
17:56It started off as a trade event.
17:57It still is.
17:58Where the theater owners from all over the world and the country come there.
18:01So look at sneak previews of the films that are coming up this year.
18:04And you show the footage for the first time anybody's seen the footage, right?
18:07That's right.
18:08We show a lot, yeah.
18:08Is it nerve-wracking or just fun?
18:11After working on it, I'm used to doing a TV show, which is every year you get another
18:14season.
18:15This one, we worked for almost three years on this thing.
18:17So I'm excited to show it to people.
18:19Right.
18:19And I've never gotten to do Star Wars where you present it to a crowd.
18:23And I grew up seeing Star Wars in the movie theater.
18:26And then it was before, you know, 77 when the first movie came out.
18:29I was a little kid.
18:31And I was like your son's age.
18:32And there was no video.
18:35So you just kept going back to the movie theater.
18:37And then after that, you just had the album and the toys.
18:39Right.
18:39Yeah.
18:42Right.
18:42And by the way, kids, including my nine-year-old, are very excited about this movie.
18:46Oh, is he?
18:47Yeah.
18:47It's funny because something, like he doesn't, like I've shown him Star Wars, you know, and
18:51whatever.
18:52But it's not the same impact as when, like as I was.
18:55You go to the theater.
18:56Yeah.
18:56About that age.
18:57Well, let me, for his birthday, let me give you one of our challenge coins.
19:00Oh, thank you.
19:01Oh, how about that?
19:03That's your belly.
19:04Well, thank you very much.
19:06That's very kind.
19:06A little baby Yoda on there.
19:08We've also been, I don't know, I told you this.
19:10This is a non-food text we have.
19:12We've been really hardcore re-watching Spider-Man.
19:15Oh, okay.
19:16And then I started thinking about your contributions to this, like, marvelous world that has been
19:22created.
19:22You got the, you were the guy with the flint and the sticks making fire there.
19:28You wanted Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, and incredibly, now we look back on it, and
19:34it's hard to even believe that Marvel was like, ah, we don't know.
19:38We don't know if this is the guy.
19:39But you knew he was the guy.
19:41Yeah, no, he was great for Tony Stark, and as soon as we cast him, then everything else
19:45was easy, easy decisions, because, you know, he was, remember, there were a lot of Marvel
19:52movies before then.
19:53There were other Spider-Man movies.
19:54There were X-Men.
19:55They, you know, we didn't know if Iron Man, nobody knew who Iron Man was.
19:58And I knew with Robert in that role, with, you know, his, to cast somebody who's that
20:03good of an actor in that type of a role, really, I think, created something that was bigger
20:08than, you know, it was a real synergy between those two things.
20:10When they decided, when Marvel, when they decided that they were going to kill Iron Man,
20:17you were not happy about this.
20:19In Avengers Endgame.
20:20In Avengers Endgame, yeah.
20:21Yes.
20:22And I talked to the Russos.
20:23You called them and said, hey, no, no, no, no, no.
20:25Like, I don't know about, I don't know if, like, I don't think people, I don't know if
20:28people are going to, I don't know.
20:30I think it's going to really impact people, because there were kids that grew up with that
20:33character.
20:34It did.
20:35You know, and, but I have to tell you, it was handled so well by them, and Gwyneth and
20:40Robert did such a wonderful job acting, and I think it added a poignancy to it, and it,
20:45I think they did a wonderful job.
20:47I was wrong.
20:47I remember, I was wrong.
20:48I remember half of the movie theater had, they had tears in their eyes.
20:51I was choked up, because I had, you know, that, even though it's a movie, those people,
20:55those characters have been part of my life for so long.
20:58That's your baby that they killed.
20:59Yeah.
21:00Yeah, that's, and now, it's funny, because now he's Dr. Doom.
21:03Now he's, they're like, oh yeah, we love this guy so much, we have to give him an entirely
21:07different character.
21:08Yes.
21:08And that's going to, I feel like that's going to be a transition for us.
21:13I'm excited to see it.
21:14I get to travel around with them, because I'm, you know, Star Wars is a Disney movie,
21:19but Marvel's Disney, so we travel to, and we know each other for so long, Kevin and the
21:24Russos and Robert and I, so they were there at show, I saw them at CinemaCon.
21:30Who is scarier, the Marvel fans or the Star Wars fans?
21:33It's, they're, they're equally invested in the movies.
21:39They care, right?
21:40So, I would say, but I would, but I think Star Wars fans, because people my age, our age,
21:47we grew up, I was there in 77 in the movie theater.
21:51By the time Return of the Jedi came out, I was an usher in Queens.
21:55And I worked my way through, my whole life has been informed by Star Wars, and everything
22:01that I love about cinema, that I love about genre, George Lucas really opened the doors
22:06to me, and that turned me on to Kurosawa, to classic Westerns, to all the influences that
22:14important, even Hot Rods and stuff, because of American graffiti.
22:18So, that experience, seeing that movie at that age, opened up all those doors, and I
22:23don't think I'd be doing what I'm doing now if I wasn't impacted so much.
22:26So, what we're going to see when we come back is footage that has not been seen, maybe
22:30outside of that room.
22:31No, not even there.
22:32Not even in that room.
22:33This is a new clip.
22:33Oh, there we're going to see.
22:34Just for you and your audience.
22:35This is a clip from The Mandalorian and Grogu, which comes out May 22nd, right after this.
22:49The Mandalorian and Grogu, I need you to go to the control panel.
22:52Remember the buttons I told you never to touch?
22:55I'm going to need you to touch them.
22:57Look for the ignition relay cutoff.
22:59It's next to the fuel differential readout, which is between the pump compression gauge and
23:05the primary reserve in...
23:10No, don't touch the missile battery switch.
23:13That's why there's a safety guard on it.
23:15Do you see the fuel readout display?
23:17Remember I told you that one?
23:19It's on the other side of the manual control surface calibration.
23:25I don't think he knows what he's doing.
23:27That is The Mandalorian and Grogu is the co-writer, producer, director, all of that stuff.
23:36Wow, that's got to...
23:37I mean, this has got to be so much fun for you to be a part of.
23:39It's so much fun.
23:40Because we're playing with big Star Wars toys, basically.
23:43Yeah.
23:44You have one of the actors.
23:45I think...
23:46I hope I'm allowed to say this, but there's a very famous director who does one of the characters.
23:52Yes.
23:52Yes, he's billed in the movie.
23:53It's not a secret.
23:54He is.
23:54Okay, good.
23:54All right.
23:55Marty Scorsese, you're talking about.
23:56Well, that's pretty great.
23:57Yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:59Did you call him and ask him to do this?
24:01I was hoping to...
24:03Kathy Kennedy actually knows him better.
24:05I was in Wolf of Wall Street.
24:06I grew up watching his films.
24:08Sure.
24:08Probably from a younger age than I probably should have seen them in the 70s.
24:12What was the first one you saw?
24:13Like, probably Mean Streets.
24:14Oh, really?
24:15Okay.
24:15And I was...
24:16It was very...
24:18It's great cinema, but it's a little gritty for a kid that age.
24:22Yes.
24:23And so we reached out to him and said,
24:25I would be interested in doing a voice of this character.
24:27And he was so much fun, totally game for it.
24:31Improvised.
24:32It was...
24:32I was pinching myself the whole time.
24:34Did you give him notes at all?
24:36Kind of.
24:37You know, like, hey, let's play around.
24:38Like, with improv.
24:40Try this.
24:40And I'd laugh and say, do more of that.
24:42But it's easy because we were animating after he recorded.
24:45So we had a lot of latitude to change things.
24:49Does the character have big eyebrows?
24:50You'll see what he looks like in the eye.
24:53It definitely is informed by his...
24:56Will we ever see Mandalorian versus Kardashian?
24:59Will that film ever...
25:00That franchise ever?
25:01No, it's interesting.
25:02We'll see how this does.
25:05Can you talk about Spider-Man, the next one?
25:08I could give you a big spoiler.
25:10Go ahead.
25:14I'm not in it.
25:16Oh.
25:17Because he lost his memory.
25:20I'm not part of...
25:21He doesn't remember me anymore.
25:23Well, I don't believe it.
25:24He might meet me again someday.
25:26I don't know.
25:27But isn't that how the last one ended with him forgetting everything?
25:30Yeah, yeah.
25:30So now it's all about his new...
25:32I don't know anything about it other than...
25:34If I'm in it, they better hurry up.
25:38Because they're running out of time.
25:39I feel like, you know what?
25:40Next time you're here, we're going to watch this segment back.
25:43I want you to know to see if you're lying right to my face.
25:46I would never lie to you or your face.
25:49This audience is...
25:50They were so nice to me.
25:51Why would I lie?
25:52Yeah.
25:52Okay.
25:54I'm disappointed by that.
25:55And that's true.
25:56Because I love Happy's relationship.
25:58I had a lot of fun.
25:59I got to be in three of the Spider-Man films, a bunch of the Marvel movies.
26:04The smartest thing I ever did was give myself a cameo in that first one.
26:08In the Iron Man?
26:09Because that thing...
26:10That put my kids through school.
26:11Yeah.
26:13Well, there you go.
26:14All right.
26:14Well, it's great to see you.
26:15Congratulations on...
26:16And James Taylor, man.
26:17Oh, yeah.
26:18You want to stay for James Taylor?
26:19Yeah, I love it.
26:20I love it.
26:21Definitely.
26:22Absolutely.
26:22Huge fan.
26:23Grew up with him.
26:24I've seen him all through my childhood.
26:26My dad played the records.
26:27It's so...
26:28Same here.
26:28It's like we're raising the same house.
26:31I'm so excited.
26:33John Tarver, everybody.
26:33The Mandalorian and Grover will open together May 22nd.
26:36We'll be right back with James Taylor.
26:44All right.
26:44For the last time, which one of you is the real Guillermo?
26:47I am the real Guillermo.
26:49He's an imitator.
26:50Look.
26:52I have three mustangs.
26:53Are you blaming me for trying to steal your golden, perfectly seasoned ore-rided tater tots?
27:00Mm, crispy.
27:01You two handsome, too.
27:03Stay mad at.
27:04All right-o.
27:05There's only one original.
27:13Hi, and welcome back to our program.
27:16Our next guest has six Grammy Awards, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Voice of an Angel.
27:21You can see him on tour with his all-star band.
27:24And you should, starting Sunday at the Yamaha Theater here in L.A.
27:28Please welcome James Taylor.
27:55You know those guys, right?
27:57Yeah, I do.
27:58Yeah.
27:59They're going to be playing with you later on.
28:01I know you were with our band leader, Jeff Babco, in the Bahamas this weekend, correct?
28:06We were, yeah.
28:07We took a gig in the Bahamas to sort of kind of dust ourselves off a little bit.
28:14Gotcha.
28:15Get back in the game a little.
28:16You did a show with Kanye there?
28:20Or do I have that wrong?
28:21I think that's right.
28:22Do you have a pre, like before you start your tour, do you have a regimen or any kind of
28:28a tradition?
28:29You know, I just become amazingly nervous.
28:32Still, still.
28:33You do?
28:34I do.
28:35But, you know, it's like...
28:36You're nervous about it.
28:37I don't know.
28:38Let me help you with this, James.
28:39Okay, cool.
28:41I think you could go to peace at any time.
28:45I will tell you something.
28:46I listen to you every single day, every day, at least five songs every single day.
28:53And I have certain songs that are in my current rotate, and then they move out.
28:58In fact, when we were talking about what song you would play on the show tonight, it was...
29:03It's just...
29:04Nothing fills me with more anxiety than trying to pick one song like that.
29:10Do you ever...
29:11Do you have that yourself?
29:12Well, you know, we do.
29:14When we're preparing to go out, as we are now, and tour again, it's a daunting kind of a task
29:23to try to figure out how many new songs to do and how many favorites that people are expecting to
29:29hear.
29:30And so putting together a set list, it's a challenge, but it's, you know, somehow we manage it.
29:38Yeah, the negative part about having so many big hit songs is if you don't do one of them, people
29:43go home going, he didn't do Smiling Face.
29:47That's true.
29:48But we will.
29:49We'll play it.
29:49He will.
29:50He will.
29:50Okay.
29:52Let me see that.
29:53This is a...
29:55We made this.
29:56It's not...
29:57It's not a...
29:57Again, I mentioned to the audience before that if you try to buy this, you're not going to find it.
30:01It does not exist.
30:02Well, I wouldn't be too hasty about that.
30:04We...
30:05Really?
30:05Yeah, we can make something.
30:06You can make something?
30:07All right.
30:08Oh, if you'd like to have your...
30:10Yeah.
30:11How old were you when you started, when you first performed live in front of an audience that wasn't your
30:16schoolmates or friends?
30:19I was 15 years old.
30:21I was at a small sort of...
30:26They used to call them coffee houses.
30:28They were little folk clubs.
30:29Mm-hmm.
30:29Usually didn't have a liquor license.
30:32Very spontaneous kind of pop-up clubs that...
30:36And my friend, Cooch and me, you know, when I was 15, he was 17, we got a gig.
30:43And you guys still play together.
30:45We do.
30:45Yeah.
30:46Which is fantastic.
30:47So, this is from...
30:51I don't know if this is your first show.
30:52This is from 1963.
30:53July 5th, 1963.
30:55I believe this is your first review.
30:58Probably the most outstanding young folk singer on the island is young James Taylor, son of Dr. and Mrs. Isaac
31:04Taylor of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in Chilmark.
31:07Monday night at the Moon Cusser Coffeehouse Hootenanny, 15-year-old barefoot James got up and entertained the audience with
31:14his sincere folk singing, accompanying himself on guitar.
31:17The general opinion of everyone who has heard and seen James perform must be that for a young boy, he
31:22is definitely talented and has quite a performing career ahead of him.
31:28No talk.
31:30No walker listed.
31:33When you were, uh...
31:35That cost me plenty.
31:37A 15-year-old kid who couldn't even afford shoes to wear in public.
31:42Did this thrill you to read this about yourself?
31:45I, uh, I...
31:47It certainly would have if I...
31:48If I could remember it.
31:50Oh, you don't remember?
31:50Wow.
31:51Wow.
31:52I missed that one, yeah.
31:53And then you started touring how far...
31:56How long after that, after you were 15?
31:59Well, uh, when I was 16, I, uh, we had a band in high school, uh, my...
32:04My older brother, Alex and me.
32:06Mm-hmm.
32:06And then, uh, the next year, um, I moved to New York and, uh, and I started...
32:12Uh, I started playing in a, uh, in a band with my, my friend Cooch, Danny Korchmar, uh, my old
32:19pal.
32:20And, uh, and, you know, that, that, uh, we, we struggled and got by for a, for a year or
32:27so.
32:28And then ultimately the band did, uh, did, so we scattered, you know, we just sort of starved to death
32:33and left.
32:34But, uh...
32:35The Flying Machine.
32:36And that was, that was Sweet Dreams and Flying Machines in Pieces on the Ground.
32:39That's the reference to the band.
32:41That's right.
32:42Oh, yeah.
32:42Yeah.
32:43Well, I know you know it, but I figured out...
32:45I'll just throw it out.
32:46You know, Ringo was here last night.
32:48Ringo's a star.
32:49Amazing.
32:50Um, I, I do know that.
32:51Yeah, he, um, and the Beatles, and this is, I think, well known, that the Beatles played a, a big
32:57role in launching your career.
33:00They, they signed you to their, their record company.
33:04I did.
33:04I did.
33:05That, uh, after the band, uh, dissolved in New York City, I went home to North Carolina to sort of
33:11recover and lick my wounds for a while.
33:14And then, not knowing what else to do, um, I, I, uh, I talked my folks into buying me a,
33:20uh, a plane ticket to go visit a friend who lived in London.
33:23And, uh, I took my guitar and some songs, and, um, I, I ran into some people who were enthusiastic
33:30about my music.
33:31And they, uh, they convinced me to make a little, uh, demo, a little, uh, a little, uh, a disc.
33:39At the time, you, you bought, you bought a little time in a two-track studio, made a, an acetate
33:45disc, and a couple of copies of reel-to-reel tape.
33:49And, uh, and I started, uh, I and my friends started sort of shopping these around, and eventually, uh, again,
33:57with the help of my friend Danny Korchmar, I, I, uh, I got in touch with Peter Asher.
34:02Uh, I played him the, the, uh, the demo.
34:05Um, I went over to his house.
34:07I, I, we, we, I played through some songs I had, and he got me a, uh, he had, as
34:12luck would have it, he had just taken on a job as, as a head of A&R.
34:18He was looking for, for new talent to sign to the Beatles' new record label, Apple Records, so.
34:24What did they pay you, uh, to sign that deal? Do you remember?
34:27You don't know.
34:27I do, I do not remember, no.
34:28You've been covered many times.
34:30I mean, you cover a lot of, uh, artists, which I love to hear, and, uh, I think that says
34:34a lot about how much you love music.
34:37And, uh, art, other artists will cover your songs, many of them.
34:40And I think, um, sometimes I'll go and I'll listen to, like, uh, I was listening to Eric Clapton has
34:46done a, a few of your songs.
34:47Live in concert.
34:49Yeah.
34:49Um, Garth Brooks, of course, um, uh, Taylor Swift, you guys sang to, Eddie Vedder has a beautiful cover.
34:56Elvis was the one that I didn't know about until recently.
35:01It was a shock to me, too.
35:02It was.
35:03He covered Steamroller Blues.
35:05He did.
35:06Which is, uh, in the aloha, in the big aloha, um, from Hawaii special.
35:11Right.
35:11Did you know beforehand that he was going to do that?
35:13No idea.
35:15Absolutely.
35:15Absolutely no idea.
35:16And you wrote that song as kind of a little bit of a goof, right?
35:19It really was, uh, it was a 15-minute song.
35:22It just dashed it off.
35:23Yeah.
35:24Yeah.
35:24And did you ever meet Elvis?
35:26No.
35:26You never did.
35:27You never got to talk to him about that.
35:29Not that I know of.
35:30Yeah.
35:33By the way, if you, I would say that if you'd forgotten that meeting, then, uh, yeah, you
35:41really were in a lot of trouble.
35:43He's, he's reported to be around, you know, sometimes.
35:46He might.
35:47He hasn't left this building yet, that's for sure.
35:49You, um, Charlie Puth was here a few weeks ago.
35:52I love Charlie.
35:53And you guys did a song together.
35:54It's really, and he's just, I mean, the kid's just like a weird musical genius, right?
35:58I mean.
35:58Charlie is, is, has a great gift.
36:01And then we learned that, uh, your concert was his first concert, was the first concert
36:06that he ever went to.
36:07Oh, yeah.
36:07Did he tell you that or no?
36:08He, uh, no, I, I didn't think I knew that.
36:11Yeah.
36:11Okay.
36:11Well, now you know.
36:12I do.
36:12And, um, what was your first concert?
36:16The first, the first concert that I remember going to and being excited about, rather than my,
36:21my folks sort of dragging me to hear some classical music or something, you know, uh, the first
36:26one was a Peter, Paul, and Mary concert.
36:28Uh, yeah.
36:31That's a good one.
36:32Did you have the thought when you were there watching them that one day I would like to
36:36be doing this?
36:38You know, I, I was already, I was already sort of fooling around with the guitar and with
36:42music.
36:43And I'm sure it, it, uh, lit a fire.
36:45Yeah.
36:46Could have been Peter, Paul, Mary, and James.
36:48Yeah.
36:49Well, uh, I'm so happy that you're here.
36:53I am going to, I am going to see you, uh, in the upcoming days, uh, in concert.
36:58I rec, highly recommend that if you've never seen James Taylor and his all-star band, you
37:02go to jamestaylor.com right now.
37:05And we're going to take a break.
37:06When we come back, you're going to sing for us.
37:08I am.
37:08James Taylor, everybody.
37:10Thank you, James.
37:20Thanks to Jon Favreau.
37:22Apologies to Matt Damon.
37:23Ran out of time for him.
37:24Nightline is next, but first he is on tour with his all-star band starting Sunday night
37:29here in LA.
37:31This song is called That's Why I'm Here with help from the Cletos, the one, the only, James
37:36Taylor.
37:46Oh, person to person and man to man.
37:52I'm back in touch with my long-lost friend.
37:56Listen to reason and understand.
38:01Think of me from way back when.
38:04He said me and Melissa, well, we fell our love.
38:10We ran out of luck, seemed like a lightning struck.
38:14I've been thinking of leaving, but I can't raise a buck.
38:19James, I'm wondering, could I borrow your truck?
38:22He said, that's why I'm here.
38:25That's why I'm here.
38:27There's no more reason.
38:32That's why I'm standing.
38:34That's why I'm here.
38:37That's why I'm here.
38:43John's gone, found dead.
38:45He dies high, he's brown red.
38:48He is said to have drowned in his bed.
38:52After his life heard the wave of dread.
38:57And it hits us like a tunnel in.
39:00It seems learn not to burn means to turn on a dime.
39:06And walk on through walking, even if it's a uphill climb.
39:11And try to remember it's not just a crime.
39:14It's a criminal waste of your time.
39:18That's why I'm here.
39:21That's why I'm here.
39:23That's why I'm here.
39:38There's no more message tonight.
39:43I reckon I owe you one now.
39:48Listen, Wendy.
39:50Oh, listen, glory.
39:52This will be better tomorrow.
39:56Oh, fortune and fame, such a curious game.
40:01Perfect strangers, like to call you by name.
40:06And take good money to see fire and rain.
40:11Again and again and again.
40:14Oh, summer, like summer, coming back every year.
40:19Got your baby, got your blanket, got your bucket of beer.
40:24I'm breaking to a grin from ear to ear.
40:29Then suddenly it's perfectly clear.
40:32Know why I'm here.
40:35That's why I'm here.
40:37Singing tonight, tomorrow.
40:40And every day, you know why I'm standing.
40:44That's why I'm here.
40:46That's why I'm here.
40:52Here comes a party, but give me a hand.
40:57He loved her, she loved him.
41:01Wake up, shake up, give a love of life.
41:06Won't you tell me everything's all right?
41:08To give everything's all right?
41:12That's why I'm here.
41:15To drop the broken and talk to him like a natural man.
41:20And I'm standing.
41:21That's why I'm here.
41:23That's why I'm here.
41:27That's about life.
41:46Thank you, Jimmy.
41:47Thank you, Jimmy.
41:47Thank you, Jimmy.
41:48Thank you, Jimmy.
41:50Thank you, Jimmy.
41:51Thank you, Jimmy.
41:52Thank you, Jimmy.
41:52Thank you, Jimmy.
41:52Thank you, Jimmy.
41:52Thank you, Jimmy.
41:52Thank you, Jimmy.
41:53Thank you, Jimmy.
