00:00This week we're in London where our designers are doing up spaces at the Passage
00:06a homelessness charity that provides support and
00:0943,000 meals a year. So chef, what do you want me to do? I can maitre d, I can
00:16sprinkle, I can stir.
00:18I'm sure you can Alan, but right now I need a thousand potatoes prepared fast. More chipping, less chatting.
00:25A thousand potatoes?
00:26I'm gonna need backup.
00:28Oi!
00:32Right, start sanding those spuds. Welcome to Interior Design Masters.
00:38Eight designers remain as they compete for a life-changing prize to partner with Next to launch their own homeware
00:46collection.
00:48Last time.
00:50They stormed a castle.
00:53I'm gonna knock out all the competition with this.
00:55And transformed hotel bedrooms.
00:58It's a big old wall.
01:00Sophie created the perfect love nest and one standout space.
01:05It was romantic, it was updated, it was modernised.
01:08Thank you very much.
01:10Duran's lack of wardrobe.
01:12We've lost out a little bit on the practicality in service to surrealism.
01:16And Emily's focus on her artwork.
01:19I've done a crown for Maid Marian.
01:21Saw them on the sofa.
01:23I need you to let go of your identity as an artist and then allow yourself to become a designer.
01:30But it was Frankie's busy bedroom.
01:33It's a bit of a visual overload.
01:35That saw her check out of the competition.
01:37I'm just super disappointed, but this isn't the end, it's just the beginning.
01:52This week we're designing for a homeless charity in London.
01:55It's completely different to anything I've ever done before.
01:59Redesigning the space for someone that's homeless can actually build a bit of confidence in them and be the space
02:04to belong.
02:04If our designs can help to facilitate that, then that's going to be a tremendous reward for all of us
02:10as designers.
02:12Last week I visited the sofa.
02:16It was my second time.
02:18I think I was pulled up because Michelle can see that I really do want to learn.
02:22I've got potential and I can do this.
02:27Hi gang.
02:28How are you?
02:29Hello.
02:30Well done for making it to week three.
02:33Right now.
02:35You've officially passed that, oh this is awkward, I've gone home too soon stage.
02:40Yes.
02:42Now this week's challenge is a biggie.
02:44Not just because it's tough, but because of the huge difference your designs are going to make to people who
02:50really need them.
02:52In London, Victoria is The Passage, a sanctuary for people experiencing homelessness.
02:58For over 45 years, it's provided free meals and safe shelter with the support of volunteers and its royal patron,
03:06Prince William, who was introduced to the charity by Princess Diana.
03:10Today, The Passage aims to prevent homelessness and supports over 3,000 people a year.
03:15It's not just about access to food, showers, clothing.
03:19It's also about getting people into accommodation, getting people into employment, into training and essentially back into society.
03:27And the designers will be doing up four of their meeting spaces.
03:32The arts and crafts room, the employment suite, the group workshop and the wellness mezzanine.
03:41For the first time, you'll be working in pairs.
03:45A bit like a tandem skydive for designers.
03:49And Sophie, because you won standout space last week, you can choose your partner first.
03:55Oh, I wasn't expecting this bombshell.
03:58Surprise!
04:00I would actually love to work with Joanne.
04:03OK, lovely.
04:04Right, everyone, you pick a partner you'd like to work with.
04:08Do you want me?
04:08Yeah, I'll go with you.
04:11Yep.
04:12Yes.
04:13Sorry, you've got the worst words.
04:15Emily!
04:16I'm going to smash it.
04:19Now, Michelle, you like to put them under pressure, but with this one, you've gone full Freddie Mercury.
04:25What do you want to see from our designers?
04:28Well, it's true.
04:29Working in pairs does add an extra dimension to the challenge.
04:33But overall, I really want to see rooms that have a sense of hope for the people that will be
04:38using them,
04:39but also practical solutions for the staff that work there.
04:43At the end, two designers will be awarded standout space.
04:48However, two designers will be going home.
04:52So give it everything you've got.
04:54You've got two days and a budget of £3,000 per room.
04:58We'll see you in London town!
05:00Hello!
05:02Hello!
05:07After planning in their pairs, the designers are ready to meet the staff and community members who use the spaces.
05:15First up are Sophie and Duran.
05:18Hello!
05:19Hi!
05:19Hi!
05:20Who've been given the group workshop?
05:24We use this room for anything and everything, really.
05:28Yeah.
05:28So it needs to be able to have, like, one-to-one meetings, bigger meetings, activities, sometimes dog therapy.
05:35So you need, like, a lot of space.
05:37And what about any big problems that you want us to address?
05:41We do a lot of packaging here.
05:44A lot of donation comes into the passage.
05:46So what would you guys think about maybe building a packing table?
05:49Would that be helpful?
05:50Yes, that would be perfect.
05:52Yes.
05:53Once your environment is well-kept, it affects the mood, so...
05:57We want to come in and feel relaxed and enjoy our learning sessions.
06:02Yeah.
06:03I think we've got you.
06:04Yeah.
06:05Don't you?
06:06It's a challenge, but I think we've got some clever ideas up our sleeves.
06:10And I'm excited for us to work together.
06:11I think we'll be proud of this space.
06:13Woo!
06:15Johnny and Leah have the employment suite.
06:18Hiya!
06:18Johnny, nice to meet you.
06:19Where homeless people are helped back into work.
06:23This is where we meet our passage community, whether it's training, employment, volunteering, etc.
06:29Nice.
06:29So their journey begins in this room.
06:31Their journey begins, yeah, yeah.
06:32Is there necessarily like a feeling that you want people to have when they come into this room?
06:36Well, we want people to feel safe.
06:38We want it to feel welcoming and friendly and inclusive.
06:42Definitely important.
06:43So that's really important.
06:44Yeah.
06:44We normally work as a team on a table, and we do like that, but we still need a space
06:50for privacy with the clients when we're doing the one-to-one.
06:53And then in terms of colours, maybe some yellows, a nice camming blue.
06:58That sounds perfect, actually.
07:00Yellows and blues.
07:01Like the sunshine itself.
07:02Yeah!
07:03Yeah!
07:04We're hoping to achieve a more motivational space.
07:09We really want, one, that they want to come and work there.
07:12Yeah.
07:12Two, they want to inspire others.
07:13And also to kind of get them into a really good start at the beginning of their journey.
07:18And I feel that room, once we're finished with it, is going to be...
07:25This is such a lovely space.
07:27Ben and Kate have the wellness mezzanine.
07:29It looks like it gets used for a lot of different things.
07:33It's one of the main communal areas we've got here.
07:35Most people coming in off the street, they need food showers and they kind of just want to rest.
07:40Yeah.
07:40So they need a bit of a quiet space.
07:42But we also have, like, the client computers up here.
07:45We run groups and activities.
07:47Fitness.
07:47The fitness group do their exercise up here.
07:49It's definitely a multi-functional area.
07:51Yeah.
07:51And then if it gets super cold, we'll open for a night shelter.
07:55Yeah.
07:55And people will sleep up here.
07:57What do you think the main challenges are with this room?
07:59I would say the noise from downstairs.
08:02Yes.
08:02It can be really difficult when you do have a group running.
08:04So everything we're putting in, hopefully, will help reduce the noise.
08:07Yeah.
08:08Oh, that sounds really good.
08:09Yeah.
08:11The space is multi-functional, but everything needs to be moved out of the way.
08:14So the room's asking for a lot.
08:16Yeah, they're just...
08:18Pain.
08:18And Emily and Ajit have the Arts and Crafts room.
08:22Someone's journey of recovery is about processing some of the experiences that have happened to them.
08:27And by focusing on something creative, it really starts that reintegration into a community.
08:32So what currently doesn't work for the space?
08:34I think at the moment it's a little bit messy.
08:37There's not that much space to store a lot of our stuff.
08:41The kitchen area is quite outdated.
08:44It would just be nice to have, like, a brighter, cleaner room.
08:47I think there's a bit of extra pressure on us this week, just given our experiences.
08:53I'm a trustee for a homelessness charity, Emily being an art teacher and going into spaces like this.
08:58I understand how important these spaces are and it's actually quite like a dream to design one of these spaces.
09:04I can't afford for this to go wrong and I'm not even thinking about it.
09:11Right.
09:11Let's get our thousand cushions out of the way.
09:14With designs locked down, it's time to put plans into action.
09:19Is this the fabric for the seating?
09:22Possibly.
09:24There's a lot in here.
09:25OK.
09:26Each team has two carpenters and a decorator to help.
09:31Hi.
09:32Hello.
09:33Morning.
09:34So welcome to the wellness mezzanine.
09:36Can you feel the calm?
09:37Well, maybe.
09:39It's calm at the moment anyway.
09:41Yeah.
09:41We're going to try and break this down into five different areas.
09:45So, yeah.
09:46Six.
09:46Sorry.
09:47Yeah.
09:48Ben and Kate's six zones will be divided into an office with an upcycled floating desk and
09:54sofa, a library reading nook and shelving with semi-arched dividers, a relaxing yoga and
10:01meditation space, a private one-to-one alcove, a dining space for up to 12 people and a lounge,
10:09which doubles as a sleeping area on cold nights.
10:12They'll display clients' artwork up the stairs and a wave pattern will encircle the space,
10:18including a new plywood wall along the railing.
10:21Each of the six zones will be denoted by a different earthy colour on both the walls and floor.
10:27Should we do 250, just to make it a nice even number?
10:30I don't think any bigger than that.
10:32We're just marking out the zones, making sure we've got enough space for everything.
10:36And also so we can clearly see visually what it's going to look like.
10:41Oh, yeah.
10:41They're definitely big enough, absolutely.
10:43They're definitely big enough.
10:43Yeah, yeah.
10:44Well, I think we're happy.
10:46Oh!
10:48As Ben and Kate get to work dividing up their multiple zones.
10:52It's like my son's room.
10:54All I ever find is socks.
10:57It's the work of a madman.
11:00Sophie and Duran are focusing their attention on one huge build for the group workshop.
11:05A lot of this room is used for storing donations, so we've got a kind of L-shaped unit.
11:11The big build, the monster of the room, is this huge partition with loads of storage.
11:17I hope that it doesn't feel intimidating when you walk into the room.
11:20Instead, I want it to encourage you to go round and actually find the other area of the room.
11:25There's a lot of wood needing for this. Have you got enough?
11:28I hope so.
11:31Duran's three-metre-high unit will include a generous counter for packing donations
11:36and plenty of shelves and cupboards for storage.
11:39She's using a sustainable OSB wood, which she's highlighting in an electric blue.
11:44This will be softened with blush pink walls and a cornflower blue ceiling.
11:49Onto it, she's adding the passage motto, running it down the wall.
11:54Sophie's in charge of the modular upholstered bonquette seating,
11:57which will include hidden storage.
11:59She's layering it with cushions and adding a scalloped rug to create a homely cosy feel.
12:05And she's upcycling free coffee tables to create a tiered packing station for donations.
12:12Yay! My vision is coming to life!
12:15The packing table is coming along nicely.
12:19She is a bit wobbly at the minute, but we're putting some extra reinforcement in
12:23so that she'll be solid.
12:24The last one on top again?
12:26The last one on top, with the table top.
12:28So something like this.
12:29Oh, my God! It's going to work!
12:31Cool.
12:31Yes!
12:35In the arts and crafts room...
12:36Oh, I only drink them, that's our margarita.
12:38...Ajeev's also shaking things up with some repurposing.
12:42I've got six of these units.
12:44I've got them all secondhand.
12:45Emily and I have played on our individual strengths,
12:47so Emily's led on colour and texture.
12:50And I've taken responsibility for the furniture
12:51that's going to be multifunctional and configured as people need it to.
12:55So there'll be a piece of plywood here varnished,
12:57another varnished piece of plywood, which will be on hinges.
13:00So that when you lift it up, it forms like one long table,
13:02and that'll be like the individual workstation.
13:04Yeah, these shelves have definitely seen better days.
13:07And team-mate Emily is reorganising the messy art storage cupboard.
13:12And at the moment, this isn't working for the clients.
13:15We're going to make that better.
13:17We've got art drying, so it's like you can hang sculptures to dry,
13:20you can put your paints on the drying rack.
13:23And again, it's all adjustable.
13:24If I can make their life, like, easier by two minutes,
13:28then, you know, it's the least I can do.
13:33Seeing that, I'm like, this shelf is so wedged in.
13:36We might have to keep that one where it is.
13:41Emily's cupboard will be organised into an area
13:44for storing materials and drying artwork.
13:47She's chosen to colour-drench the room
13:49with calming peach and orange tones,
13:52and she's ombre-ing these colours on the far wall.
13:55She's in charge of revamping the kitchen
13:58in soft green and terracotta,
14:00and she'll vinyl-wrap the countertop.
14:03Ajit's multifunctional furniture
14:05will include a modular bench,
14:07three backlit wall-mounted cabinets
14:10to display artwork,
14:11and his upcycled modular workstations.
14:15But the pièce de résistance will be Emily's own sculptures,
14:19giant papier-mĂ¢chĂ© pencils,
14:21which she will hang around the room.
14:26It's, like, sorting out the storage cupboard's stressful,
14:29and now I'm treating myself to half an hour of papier-mĂ¢chĂ©
14:32and it is, like, art therapy.
14:34And this is the nibs of the pencils that I'm making.
14:38If you can't do papier-mĂ¢chĂ© in an arts and crafts room,
14:41when can you do papier-mĂ¢chĂ©?
14:49I'm so excited to be here in London
14:51to check on the designers.
14:53It's a bit of a different vibe to Brian's,
14:55so I thought I'd fit in with the locals.
15:04為us
15:18Emily!
15:19Ellen!
15:20Oh, my – look at these giant pencils!
15:23Do you like them?
15:23I love them, they're amazing!
15:26How'd you make them?
15:27sewage pipe sewage pipe I thought you changed your perfume and what have I
15:36told you about paper mache there's one of Michelle's criticisms of you was you're
15:41this fantastic artist with this amazing mind but you need to park that and be an
15:46interior designer first are you getting it right this week absolutely I looked
15:50at the brief I looked at what they needed I dressed that first the end of
15:54the art what made you think you saw a sewage pipe when they'd make a great
15:58pencil well I've been designing all week yeah so I went to cheer myself up I went
16:03to the hardware store I saw these we have very different lifestyles I go there to
16:07get depressed so you went I'm gonna go to a hardware store and I'm gonna buy some
16:12poo pipes well I was like they look like they could even be paintbrushes pencils
16:17pens yeah just put a bit of paper masher on the end voila you've got a pencil okay
16:22great I can't wait to tell Michelle how inspirational this place is do you know
16:26what I'm gonna write her a giant postcard can I borrow this to HB of course you can
16:31thanks love see you soon see you bye have you got a sharpener
16:38just make that curve really long we are marking the way about we're gonna paint the
16:46zones on the walls the top half's going to be like an off-white and then each wave's going
16:50to be a different color waves to me I instantly feel calm by the sea they're not like a straight
16:57structure there's not sharp edges so they're quite soft curves I got this I've got it Ben and Kate will
17:05continue the waves along the railing at the moment all these rails are obviously all open to the sound
17:10just come straight up and straight through so hopefully with these we get a nice curve feel
17:16by enclosing their space with plywood panels yeah coming on the way yeah exactly you're gonna have
17:21the white go away through so it's nice and calming basically as long as when they're sat down the
17:27sound isn't right in their ear I think that's a win really for that space hi Kate hello so listen
17:37firstly what the hell is a wellness mezzanine so this is a multifunctional space this area here will
17:44be like a chill out but the laws can play some games but yoga in the back reading how do
17:51you approach
17:52that though because there's a million and one things that can be happening up here how can you
17:57possibly appease everyone you know and Michelle so we've really had to think about can it be moved out
18:04the way but if it needs to be zoned and quiet and and we are in the mezzanine that's open
18:09so we've
18:10put these boards and we've stuck some acoustic panels to the back of them I want these things here yeah
18:15Ben try check to see if it works you can go ahead and check okay wait there let's see
18:23can you hear anything did you hear that nope didn't hear a thing result great
18:36it's halfway through day one
18:43this looks wicked yeah and with builds going up the frame is like almost done it's just great
18:52the carpenters have got their work cut out we've got the bonkette seating that needs building we've
18:56got a printer storage unit the back the kitchenette unit that needs building so it's quite a few builds
19:02um they'll be fine paintwork is going from tired to inspired Gareth this is gorgeous so I'm doing an
19:13ombre on the window wall just so it evokes that feeling of sort of release and calm but also it's
19:19a quick effective way of making people feel the ease that I want them to feel when they walk into
19:25the
19:25space so once we get the bleed in here yeah to match these two in between really nice thank you
19:34and you're happy with your wiggle I'm really happy with the record I've took control of the colors I
19:39wanted it to be a calming space so using earth tones can be really relaxing cozy nothing more calming
19:47and then a green and is your bum right behind me that's right while Kate goes calm and earthy oh
19:57oh my god Sophie you need to look at this Duran's going bold I like to work in colors of
20:03three so the
20:04ceiling is in a cornflower blue and the walls are in a shrimp pink with an accent color of ultramarine
20:10oh
20:11yeah you like it love it when you're looking at color psychology they just make you feel really
20:15uplifted and peaceful and tranquil but also help you with productivity so it's kind of what we need
20:20that room to do and in their basement employment suite I absolutely love the yellow Leah and Johnny's
20:27colors are having to work hard looks warm and it looks sunshine inviting yeah since you want it boom
20:34color theory was really important for this design obviously it's in the basement there's not a lot of
20:40light but the space had to be welcoming it had to be inspiring so yellow is such a happy color
20:46then
20:46orange is energetic and motivational and then blue is very calming in case people feel a bit nervous
20:52coming into the space initially Leah's happy yellow will flood the room and she's adding a cork texture to
21:00the far wall with pops of color Johnny has completely changed the layout of the space moving the employees
21:07desks into the middle and Leah's sandwiching it with giant orange circles on the ceiling and the floor over
21:15which she's hanging in a dramatic moss and floral lighting feature she's adding a geometric lino flooring
21:21to the raised entrance and Johnny's creating a waiting area with corner bonkett seating a cable reel copy
21:28table as well as adding a tea-making station for the client and employee meetings Johnny's designed free bright and
21:36cheery zoned booths
21:40Johnny came up with this amazing idea to have some booths in the corner with some kind of nice small
21:44arches
21:45oh it looks so good especially like off the blue framework that looks nice this is where they'll have
21:51one-to-one meetings with clients or maybe a meeting that needs to be a bit more private and then
21:55one of the other booths is for a bit of a more
21:57casual conversation away from your desk and Johnny isn't the only one using arches to zone his space
22:03never have too many arches can you the arch is basically to partition the ball permanently because
22:09obviously all our stuff in our room has to be modular has to be moved that way as obviously we
22:13need all
22:13the floor space we possibly can get the arches are going to be fixed to the wall but not to
22:20be so big that
22:20they are blocking anything you can still move everything around one arch looks fabulous
22:27this is look crazy and while duran's epic room divider is still under construction all right let's have a
22:34look
22:38don't you dare it she's made a start on her giant lettering i'm actually bringing in some typography
22:44so i've cut out my own stencils and i will be taking it down all the way from the ceiling
22:49and using their slogan
22:50which is everyone deserves a space to call home you picked quite a lot of words mate there's so many
22:56words after this
23:00day one of the passage is drawing to a close
23:03so get it cut and then i'll chase you with the roller emily and ajit joined forces to finish his
23:09upcycled workstation speed painting with emily we're just setting the pace a little bit higher
23:17working with the g we've managed to ground each other look how quick that's taken us
23:22and help one another and we've really leveled out each other i hope
23:30it's the leg for me and someone says that you can't do yoga
23:35and ben's zoning the last bit of flooring we've done acoustic boards on the railings we've got the
23:41arches up on the wall with different zone colors on wall and floor how are we going to get out
23:47of
23:47here um we're not we're going to sleep this night my biggest concern is making so we stay on track
23:56of
23:56that to-do list i've overstretched and just really finishing it off and name a meal
24:02look at that overall feeling good we've managed a lot to me see you it looks exactly how i envisioned
24:12it in my brain and hopefully johnny's too fantastic day we smashed it is that looking too tight uh i
24:19don't
24:19i don't step back i feel frazzled that's four between them them two stencils have been a bit of
24:27a nightmare yeah perfect yeah yeah i can't see it i trust you i am getting a bit concerned about
24:34time
24:34because duran storage is still only partially built and the carpenters have got quite a lot to do with
24:40my seating we've got to build the seats yeah like without without seating there's no point no let's
24:46go move my paintbrush we're so lame come on ah fire room
24:58it's day two at the passage morning guys how you doing good drew did we all sleep okay all right
25:05good because we've got a lot to do and there's just 12 hours left plan of action today get the
25:11booths finished number one we'd like to get it all finished i think well yeah yeah what's the first
25:18thing for us to get on with uh shelving in the office and the bookcase in the reading and you'll
25:22be pleased to know more arches so the zones i'm going to be taking charge of the blue zone the
25:32lounge
25:32area then we've got the red zone over there the office space and then right behind me in the back
25:37corner is the green zone which is the one-to-one area as well i have the reading nook the
25:43quiet dining
25:44area and yoga area lucky there little slanted but yeah yeah no what do i do the height and then
25:50i'll
25:50level it all right cheeky yeah the shelving's looking really good just a little bit of storage
25:56like light weights or some towels it's going to be a meditation area as well so i might put a
26:02few like
26:03led candles on there to like help with the zen three one two three up finally duran's big build is
26:12going up
26:14okay yep lovely and then to me yeah it's so much bigger but it looks beautiful and also like
26:25the colors of the wood against the colors in the room just chef's kiss this is our materials unit
26:32you ready yeah here we go when you enter the arts and crafts room you'll see on the left hand
26:39side our bespoke carpentry so that's really focused around our two display units which will allow the
26:45passage and clients to display their artwork yeah can you sort of start now seeing how the space is going
26:49to be used hope you like it hello everyone hello deserves has got two s's don't don't do this i've
27:02been
27:02questioning myself so everyone deserves a place to call well where are we is this it here yeah yeah
27:12okay let me see everyone deserves a place to call h o m phew thank god that's an e yeah
27:23that's great everyone deserves a place to call home so this is the charity's slogan
27:28oh yeah and i wanted to do something special that really creates a sense of home in the space well
27:35i'm already feeling uplifted i really am and you know what you never know everyone deserves a standout
27:42yeah oh my gosh that would be amazing pop that up there as a subliminal message to michelle she might
27:48fall for it see ya
27:52now the carpenters are freed up from duran's divider 450 from ground to cushion 500 from yes there to there
28:01they can start on sophie's seating for the workshop meeting area the client specifically asked for
28:07something that was easy to reconfigure if they needed to obviously the room is used for a lot of
28:13different things for staff meetings dog therapy sessions barber appointments having seating that
28:19can be moved around was really important and the cushions haven't gone crazy haven't gone full sophia
28:25at all no leopard print we've gone for a rich buttermilk color which is going to look lovely with the
28:31overall
28:33theme hey there guys how's it going we're getting now started on the bench yeah it's just getting it
28:39knocked out now do you know what i mean so we're building our sofa seating that will have under seat
28:45storage but this will hopefully just pull out and configure however you wish for whatever activity
28:52sweet okay leah beautiful and johnny's also configuring comfy seating just so precise
29:00for the corner of the employment suite waiting area so we got some scrap foam from our local scrap
29:05store and they had just like off cuts so i'm going to mount this on a ply board spray it
29:11down and then
29:12cover it in wadding and cover it in the fabric these are chair beds sofas they're pretty modular and
29:20while the other designers are building bespoke when people are here obviously in emergency cases
29:26um they need beds so obviously these folding out into beds such a good idea ben's bought new for his
29:32lounge zone they undo the buckle and then they just simply just throw out like so and then you have
29:39your
29:39your bed as well it's halfway through day two
29:45these are for the mural i decided to make these out of plaster to make them really textural and if
29:51it's slightly imperfect i actually think that adds something to the space and the designers are adding
29:57softness and texture where they can oh that's good actually these are the cork tiles that are gonna go on
30:03the wall all the way along are you gonna hold all of these this is obviously the correct way to
30:07measure
30:07a thing that looks so precise just stay there i'm gonna go get a cup of tea i'll be back
30:11in a minute
30:12all right see you later yeah bye we chose this cork tile which is super easy to apply and we're
30:19gonna
30:19leave tiles out of the wall and we're just gonna add in the pops of color that we have in
30:24the room just
30:25to break it up so then i guess the question is how many do we miss out i think it's
30:29like an odd one
30:30here and there also cork is great because it's an office they need to pin all their notices to the
30:36cork tiles as well so i'm thinking arches to continue the art more arches love an arch we love
30:43an arch with their six zones divided kate is adding a bookshelf to her reading nook really really happy
30:51with the bookshelves that i've got in the reading nook one because we got to reuse them they look
30:56absolutely amazing and also i've decided to add lighting into the arches of the book casing
31:01just to make it really cozy yay love it can we take these off leah is also adding a lighting
31:10feature
31:11above their central desk yeah they're just rubbery just cut them just cut that with a knife should we
31:16wait until we've done the framework and be sure we don't need them we can leave them food for thought
31:21so obviously as to not to offend any any of our decisions when we want to like challenge something
31:28we would just be like food for thought it seems like a nicer way of just being like eh i
31:34hate this
31:35let's reconsider so this is going to be the light fixture that we're going to suspend the bulbs from
31:45i'm just going to use some artificial moss and this will be wrapped around the frame
31:53hi leah hi alan how are you yeah great oh i love kale too got to get your greens in
32:01in the day don't
32:02you how are a smoothie to start you off yeah and what's it like working with johnny because as designers
32:09when you're working with another designer if you don't like something they've come up with you have to
32:14be brave and say i don't actually agree with you we've had many of those but me and johnny have
32:20a
32:20nice phrase that we say when that happens that it means the other person hates the other idea what is
32:26it so we go food for thought and that basically means i don't like your idea yeah let's think about
32:32it another way upstairs in the wellness mezzanine i'm really pleased with that kate is getting to grips
32:40with some nifty storage for her yoga area this is a pegboard so you can put your yoga mats you
32:47can hang
32:47skipping ropes off it or put weights on it if there is a one-to-one going on this can
32:52be moved between
32:54the two zones just to give it a little bit more privacy bloody looks amazing if i don't say so
33:00myself
33:01emily and ajit's art room is the only space which includes a kitchen i've taken on the kitchen which
33:08has been really interesting because i never knew anything about kitchens before the client requested
33:12a modern clean upstate kitchen that people want to use and with this grout pen this is bringing in
33:20that warm terracotta that i've incorporated within the room it's going down and she's using a terrazzo
33:29style vinyl for a cheap yet instant update to the worktop terrazzo is like it's just a joyful material
33:35we're in the arts and crafts room we're trying to promote creativity and for me i just find that
33:41material it's like energetic but it's also like smart this reminds me of at school when you wrapped
33:46your exercise books in it for apparently no reason whatsoever apart from to prep you to vinyl
33:52wrap a kitchen work surface for my first kitchen i'm so impressed with it while emily's wrap has worked
33:59a treat um super thought leah and johnny's vinyl is a sticking point what do you not like about it
34:09finish because i won't be offended yeah because it's not a shade thing to you i'm more thinking
34:14we could it looks like we're trying to cover it but we are the vinyl look like a two-year
34:20-old had done
34:21it but i just think even if the most talented person has done it it's not an easy thing to
34:24vinyl wrap
34:25have you used like a water spray something when you before you put it up no because it's sticky for
34:31me i just don't want to leave it white um but i think that's kind of my style i don't
34:36love the white
34:37it does feel really officey to me so i think we're gonna have to think up a plan b
34:49i can't believe it i've just been told a vip link to the charities swinging by
34:54i haven't been told who it is but apparently they're tall
34:59limited hair and you can't look them directly in the eye
35:11alan how are you dara what are you doing here where's where's prince william oh you're obsessed
35:18with prince william you've got to let that go i've been doing stuff with this charity for years and
35:22they told me you were doing this i'm really excited and i want to see the rooms yeah sure okay
35:26don't look
35:26me directly in the eye comedian and presenter dara o'brien is an ambassador of the passage
35:39he's worked in the kitchen and he puts on comedy events to raise money for the charity i've got
35:56and i think part of it is a sense of i came to a big city it's worked out okay
35:59for me but like
36:00it's incredible the line between the lives we take for granted and ending up on the streets is very
36:06very thin i want to show you something quite practical yeah these cupboards were absolutely
36:12chocolate blocks so i've been doing a storage solution i've thought about every kind of drying
36:16solution paper dispenser put your wet paper i'm sorry i hear the word storage solution i love it and
36:24we've built this you have a little table smooth weren't it that was like a knife through butter
36:30the way that came up i became an ambassador this year you know it's the only point of anyone like
36:35me doing stuff is to trumpet the work of others who genuinely do a lot of the things this is
36:38duran
36:38this is sophie okay it's a lesson you learn late in life that volunteering is a genuine source of great
36:44joy people should do it and then what's this this is a chalkboard don't have a little write something
36:49inspirational come on something from the heart chop more carrots because the last time i did
36:57something here that was my job that was basically the vibe i got ho ho ho good for you chop
37:03chop chop
37:04all right i've really enjoyed seeing what the designers have done with their spaces i've never had
37:07somebody built a space for me to meet them in yes this is nice this is part of a journey
37:12to restore a
37:13full life to people give them homes give them jobs and part of that is restoring joy do you do
37:18yoga
37:19a bit downward dog downward dog yeah good design like that are you are you stretching in any way
37:27there alan are you i don't think anything's moving that's just been a delight to see what do you think
37:33of this oh my gosh hey you know it's transformed
37:41i'm drawing up design ideas yeah johnny's found an alternative for leah's filing cabinet wrap
37:47thoughts yeah circles yeah yeah something like that yep on the front of the drawers yeah we decided in
37:54the end that we're just going to go for some circles which ties into the circle motif in the room
37:59in these times you've got to abandon ship and you've got to just regroup and find something that works
38:04better benches are here we've just hours left oh so good look at that sophie's upholstery finally has
38:16some seating and there's one more coming yes yeah kate's created a whole new zone this zone is quiet
38:25dining downstairs can get really really busy and noisy so if they come up here they can come and sit
38:32and just
38:32eat in a nice quiet space and leah has plans to cordon off the printer area up the ceiling yeah
38:40okay and
38:40then they're gonna be angled though can i put it on a button across the floor ideally no buttons otherwise
38:46it really ruins my vision you know sorry it would wouldn't it away from the door pointing that way
38:54these are to hook your aprons on that i've got for cookery and painting
39:02i am bringing in some artwork into the room there's no right or wrong just color that you
39:08love hopefully and yeah just feel it out problem is knowing when to stop just a little bit more pink
39:16what do you think i feel like you might need a big one there just because it's quite a lot
39:20of space
39:21i think it's really really important to reuse the artwork the clients have made
39:27this is the artwork oh cute go get it on the walls special delivery for a jeep
39:36oh thank god yes can you bring the o in a little bit closer but there it looks so cool
39:45left one just a tiny little bit higher yeah perfect thank you designers you have one hour to go
39:53that's my line
39:56just sorting out my mug hooks
39:59it all gets done everyone works their magic
40:05go down go down go down oh beautiful oh that's a sexy mirror
40:13nice
40:17we can do a journey that should be the i need to be that way doesn't it
40:24time is up
40:28done
40:30we did it we did it oh my god i can't believe it
40:34feel good i'm so happy oh i think we did a good job yeah i've poured my heart and soul
40:39into it i feel
40:40like well done mate honestly well done no good to work right let's go let's go
40:51michelle has arrived at the passage with sophie robinson
40:56oh i am so excited to get inside this building because i think this is a real opportunity for
41:01interior design to really change quite a lot of people's lives
41:06sophie is celebrated for her use of color to bring joy to residential and commercial spaces
41:11i'd like the designers use all the tools in their toolkit color is going to be absolutely essential
41:17to creating the mood and the feeling but also a lot of these spaces are multifunctional so we'll be
41:22looking for modular solutions this could be furniture that can be easily moved around and reconfigured
41:28i think this is a really special challenge because they've also got to uplift and inspire
41:34and give a sense of hope to these people that are using the spaces
41:43i am so happy with how the employment suite has turned out the vision we wanted was for that room
41:50to feel motivational inspirational just a happy place to come and work for a lot of people it's
41:57their first impression of the passage so it was so important to us that we really created this inviting
42:02welcoming space wow can i just have a wow moment it really hits you as soon as you walk in
42:12right
42:13they've injected it with joy with this really punchy color palette created a welcoming space with such a
42:21clever layout and i love as well that they've put all the staff in the middle facing inwards so you
42:27can
42:27really imagine this as a kind of big hive of activity i mean that light fitting draped in that
42:32lovely ferny greenery is extra i like that leah and johnny have added this sort of pause point to
42:39the design i could make myself a cup of tea or coffee and it's just with a little bit of
42:44pattern a
42:44little bit of texture it's just enough what's happening over here though this corner unit just
42:49doesn't live up to what else i'm seeing in the room it's pretty poorly made it's very badly
42:53upholstered it's not really inviting me into the space i'm enjoying this cork covered wall at the
42:59back here that lends a nice sense of warmth it's a different material it can double as a pinboard
43:04but leaving out a tile to allow a pop of color it doesn't work it just looks like one of
43:11the tiles
43:11has fallen off i think this is very sensible this corner every office has this situation and i think
43:18they haven't over complicated it but this is a really odd little design statement round plastic
43:24vinyl dots just cheapens this whole area but you know what it's actually the little details the
43:30fact that this wall divider is slightly on an angle that really pleases me just notice this on the floor
43:36this is like a giant vinyl sticker leads you around the space and into these communal booth areas
43:42they're sort of like a chatting area this might be somewhere where you have a meeting somewhere to do
43:48paperwork but it's nice though because they're really united with the same design approach really
43:53lovely to use the plants because it gives you enough of a sense of a privacy without closing you
43:57in they've done something really clever here it's a good balance yeah
44:04i'm really pleased of my mural with the passages slogan it really resonated and i feel like it needed to
44:12be celebrated in the space i think this week knowing that two people are going home it makes you
44:17chances of being on the sofa and leaving the competition much higher so fingers crossed michelle likes it
44:27ah kind of wonderful the color palette was duran so you really get that artistic sensibility from her
44:34it's a very lovely soft blushy plaster pink and then they've taken it up a step with this beautiful
44:40powder blue but it's this electric ultra marine gives it some uplift and success because actually
44:47this is a room that is a doing room so it can't all just be like chilled out vibes i've
44:52got lots of
44:52space to drop things as soon as i come in but i'm not blocking the rest of the space and
44:57this is like
44:57quite a nice little sociable area here if we were like sorting stuff out together we could use this
45:02painting and chatting yeah the artwork in here is quite shall we say minimal tiny little pictures
45:08and little frames i like the little bits of color but yeah
45:15oh i love all these textures and you've got sneaky extra storage underneath too
45:21i absolutely love duran's treatment of the motto we're seeing this mural everywhere around the building
45:27but they've decided to supersize it flip it onto the ceiling i just think it looks super cool and i
45:34love that she's pulled out the word home because that's exactly the heart of everything that this
45:38charity is about giving it three-dimensionality and a different color that's the level of attention
45:43to detail that i just love done thank god i mean it was quite a difficult space there was a
45:56lot going on
45:57there was a lot to achieve putting six different colors in a room can sound quite crazy but i just
46:03hope it ticks everything for the clients and the staff this is really nice how it leads your eye up
46:10the stairs i love the picture wall and i see we've got a kind of squiggly line that's guiding us
46:15up too
46:16it's very soft and organic so these first two areas were ben's responsibility we've got office over
46:24here and the kind of lounge area there well i'm drawn here i'm loving this the color drench bringing
46:29the color off the walls and then onto the floor it's a really nice grounding color to meet your eye
46:35as soon as you walk in on the other side these seats fold out to be beds so if the
46:39weather's ever
46:40very very bad the clients can come and sleep up here kate's done this little library area this is
46:47obviously an attempt at some kind of visual divider bringing the arches out of the wall but that
46:52hasn't worked has it looks really unfinished and quite awkward now i'm really drawn to kate's
46:58meditation area i mean i'm wondering how many people were going to be able to do yoga all in
47:02one go i think the clever thing is these are on casters the planters are on casters so yeah you
47:09could
47:10move everything out of the way line up your yoga mat that's clever but then over here
47:15this is kate's quiet dining area i find it very corporate and a bit boring yeah i mean this room
47:23needs to do some serious heavily lifting it's got to be a chill out place where you can sleep rest
47:27relax there's a workstation there's a reading area you might want to do some meditation yoga maybe a
47:33one-to-one and why not have some lunch as well i know i mean there's so much that is
47:36really successful
47:37i mean the space has been transformed but it's not a huge space and so they've tried to employ these
47:43designs but every little bit to me is a little bit compromised because they're squeezing it all in
47:57uh yeah i can't believe she got that done quite a few big ambitious builds the artists inside me
48:06is wanting to teach some art in there and i'm really really chuffed with what i did with the space
48:15it's really joyous isn't it there's no mistaking what this room is for doesn't it just ooze creativity
48:21and like you just want to make this stuff ordinarily you're shutting all those doors because you want
48:26to hide it all away but here actually i want to see all the stacks of the drawings that have
48:31already
48:31been done i want to see the canvases lying on the side i want to see the paper that i
48:35can pull out
48:36i mean this has been really carefully thought through
48:42i think this is just such a brilliant kitchen mini makeover it's like switch up the worktop
48:48color the grout some good blocks of color job done it looks a million dollars here we can get a
48:54real
48:54appreciation of this incredible joinery which is not only storing but also displaying all the beautiful
49:01artwork these have come some very basic storage units but they've added tops to them that flip up
49:07and down so they can be folded away so that's ajit using his technical bravado have you noticed that
49:14this wall is ombre'd yeah that's so beautiful sunrise and then over there we've got this glorious paper
49:21mache pencil that's also a hanging hook thing for aprons which is beautiful and useful yes but it's also a
49:29pencil as well so it's relevant to the
49:31here i feel that we've got two designers who've put themselves in this space i feel that they've enjoyed
49:38it well we're certainly enjoying being in here and that's a sign of a successful design isn't it they're
49:43four really good projects while michelle and sophie deliberate oh my goodness wow the moment has come
49:53for the clients and staff to see their newly transformed rooms this is what you call a multi-purpose space
49:59it's it's it's so amazing this is so great guys what do you guys think wow oh my god this
50:06is incredible
50:07thanks for sorting out the cupboard as well yeah there you go absolutely knocked it out of the park well
50:12done oh it just looks so warm and inviting so warmly yes it's like only well i think this is
50:19going to be
50:20where i feel already like it's going to affect clients behavior up here like that's going to impact
50:39like us as staff and i can't wait for clients to see it it's going to be amazing
50:48the designers are back at the studio and it's time to reveal which team has won standout space
50:54and which pair will be up for elimination oh here they are come on in take a seat
51:04so you made it back from the big smoke just yeah just about johnny and leah how are you yes
51:11all good
51:11thanks i've done something different with my hair do you like it or is it food for thought food for
51:18thought
51:19thanks for the compliment listen i would put all of you through but these two buzz kills have other plans
51:28it's michelle and sophie so who won standout space well there was one design that i think we felt
51:42absolutely encapsulated inspiration but also gave me all the joys
51:50a jeet and emily yeah really oh honestly a jeet i can see that your technical prowess with your
52:04clever multifunctional furniture you're really starting to nail that and emily you've listened
52:10you've learned you've put it into practice thank you this is insane don't you wish you'd done giant
52:17poo pipe pencils earlier so who else are you keeping in the competition there was one other space that
52:25we also felt really embodied the power of design to transform so sophie and duran for your group workshop
52:33room well done thank you so much so that does mean that ben and kate leah and johnny i would
52:42like to
52:43see you on my sofa so for everyone else congratulations and we'll see you next week
52:55i felt quite emotional about it just because i'm a trustee for a homeless charity but it did feel
53:03like i was helping out a mate and to then be able to have standout space as well just makes
53:09it feel
53:09like it was a job well done i can't believe it i'm like honestly your face i'm like what it
53:15was for the
53:15people that use the room and now that place is even more special like good luck to all of you
53:21yeah
53:21thank you i'd need to have a little chat to myself so i hopefully i can explain the decisions that
53:28i made
53:28and fingers crossed it may be something to do with all the zones maybe we didn't show enough of ourselves
53:36in each other's space so i look forward to hearing what they say i'm sad they didn't love it in
53:41the way
53:41that we did but i want to learn why and get a better understanding my first time on the dreaded
53:47sofa so feeling quite nervous but i'm ready to defend yeah so shall i start with leah and johnny
54:00many triumphs in your design really brave to have gone with that layout put those tables in the middle
54:06and i really saw a sense of both of you but a very coherent scheme i loved like the cork
54:14that was
54:14like an interesting change of material on that back wall but why did you miss some out just as a
54:19little nod to like a wee bit of playful colorness um which is let me stop you there it doesn't
54:26work
54:26leaving one out it's like you didn't order enough right oh we are just way too many as well which
54:31is
54:32maybe more infuriating it's also about finesse right what was that like chunky wheelie seating
54:38the bonket thing in the corner it wasn't very well made which again fought with the fact that other
54:43elements were so beautifully executed but in the balance of the whole because you'd already made
54:48the platform into something wonderful with the flooring and the little coffee station so you could
54:53have just given yourself a break there yeah and that would have maybe helped with that the time
54:56management thing you'd have had time to put the tiles back on the wall exactly yeah yeah no i hear
55:01you kate and ben your wellness mezzanine that was a complicated space to work with you actually
55:07quite audacious in your ambition to take the color all the way around the space and then onto the
55:13floor which i loved you had an extraordinary long list of requirements we did which arguably you
55:21accommodated but i think there was too much okay going on in there yeah yeah i just wanted to get
55:27it so right for them but the whole structure was basically just going have we done that that that that
55:33that yeah we tried to take too much off the client's list instead of actually focusing on what was in
55:37the
55:37space yeah this is one of the hardest lessons to learn as a designer that in order to give a
55:46client what they
55:47need sometimes you have to tell them i cannot give you what you think you want okay yeah and so
55:55in
55:56trying to do so much and in the spirit of glorious collaboration the whole thing got rather compromised
56:07but it does mean that kate and ben you will be leaving us this week to go home on this
56:14space
56:14i'm really proud and i'm really thankful for all of the advice i'm definitely going to take it on
56:19aren't we absolutely i wouldn't have changed my partner either oh thanks for sharing your design
56:25it is good to go home but you know what before this i only designed my bedroom so like to
56:30be able to
56:30get standout space design a really cool hotel and to design this wellness mezzanine i mean i'm leaving on a
56:37high it's so sad to be leaving but i'm leaving on a space me and ben work so hard on
56:46and for the
56:47clients and the staff to react the way they did when they seen it that's really all that matters
56:51miss you guys we're gonna miss you it was so hard to send ben and kate home this week they
56:58collaborated so
56:59beautifully and really tried to give the client everything that they asked for but in doing so
57:05we're just a bit too much compromise next time whoa that's a piece of machinery the designers
57:13join the royal navy two four six eight we like to decorate yes turning mess decks oh god all the
57:22shelves falling into morale boosting spaces yeah come on go
