00:06It's a tradition for a lot of people to ring the New Year in with a kiss.
00:10It's a time that's supposed to be filled with celebration and joy.
00:14But there's a sinister reality lurking beneath the festivities.
00:18Statistically, New Year's Day is the most violent day for assaults in New South Wales.
00:25Every single minute in the first three hours of the New Year, someone in New South Wales is assaulted.
00:32According to Boxar Statistics, people have a higher chance of being assaulted on public holidays, not only by loved ones,
00:40but also by a friend or a stranger.
00:42We think this occurs because friends and family are gathering together and spending more time together.
00:49Sometimes it's periods of increased excitement, anxiety or stress.
00:54And it's also times when there are increases in the consumption of alcohol.
00:59And while alcohol doesn't cause domestic and family violence, if abuse is present in relationships, increased alcohol consumption will lead
01:09to increases in violent incidents occurring.
01:12And we really encourage people who do need support to reach out when they need it.
