SA police arrest 80 people in domestic violence crack-down

South Australian police have arrested 80 people and conducted hundreds of checks in a major crack-down on domestic violence as part of a new operation. The charges range from stalking offences to threats to kill.

00:00South Australian police targeted hundreds of known offenders over July as part of what

00:07it says is the first dedicated and state-wide anti-domestic abuse operation.

00:12The police action, named Operation Storm, saw officers attend almost 400 addresses across

00:18metropolitan and regional areas, resulting in 80 arrests.

00:24Police laid 148 charges, issued 22 intervention orders, as well as 85 referrals to offender

00:30rehabilitation services.

00:3321 warrants were executed for domestic abuse and eight firearms checks were conducted.

00:39Police say alleged offences included aggravated assault, strangulation, threats to kill and

00:45stalking.

00:46There's been a renewed focus on domestic violence in South Australia following the

00:50separate deaths of four women in the space of a week in November, which sparked a royal

00:55commission.

00:56SA Police says an increase in reporting of domestic abuse matters shows a need to crack

01:01down harder on perpetrators.

01:04It's shameful that the level of crime that's perpetrated on women and children is so high.

01:09One of the things that gives us some comfort is the fact that women and children feel confident

01:14enough to come forward and report and we see that in the increased reporting rates.

01:18People who perpetuate domestic violence need to be held to account through the full force

01:23of the law.

01:24Through the royal commission, what we're seeking to examine is other options about how we can

01:27prevent it in the first instance.

01:29Police say its operation will be ongoing as part of its commitment to help prevent domestic

01:34violence.
