The Toronto Maple Leafs come under fire during their press conference introducing their new GM John Chayka... a con artist?! Was this presser handled professionally?
Transcript
00:00Yeah, we were talking about this press conference yesterday
00:02with the Maple Leafs.
00:04John Chayka is their new GM.
00:06Very controversial figure in the hockey world.
00:09And you know the Maple Leafs fans.
00:11They're psycho.
00:12I mean, that is not a rational fan base.
00:16And they are not happy.
00:17Because they're already a team that's floundering.
00:19They didn't make the playoffs this year.
00:22But not with the two cups at home like the Cats have.
00:26So they're not enjoying their offseason.
00:28Is that a little dig?
00:29Yeah, it's not the same.
00:31It's not the same.
00:32And then also, you know, they're trying to figure things out.
00:36Is Austin Matthews going to leave?
00:38This is another thing.
00:39All the American players, the Canadian fan base is quite pissed
00:43at all the American players.
00:44So they're all feeling it.
00:47Brady Kachuk was saying this in his exit interviews.
00:50And so Toronto's trying to figure this thing out.
00:53And they hire this guy who's got all this controversial baggage.
00:56And so this was a guy named Steve Simmons from the Toronto Sun.
01:00And he went out there, CEO Keith Pelley, about the hiring of Chayka.
01:05And this is what went down yesterday.
01:09Steve Simmons, Toronto Sun for Keith.
01:12You talk about the due diligence that you did on John prior to hiring him and now hiring him.
01:19In the past, say, three to four days, I have been in contact with about 20 people who work
01:25in the National Hockey League, many of whom are prominent names that we would all know.
01:29And of the 20 people I spoke to, one was supportive of John's hiring,
01:34and the other 19 thought it was a sham, to be perfectly honest.
01:38Words were used like con artist, liar, salesman.
01:41How did you come to a different conclusion than I was able to come to in a very short time?
01:46I must have talked to different people.
01:50That's it?
01:50Because I'm telling you, the hockey world today is astounded by this announcement.
01:56Okay.
01:58And your response to that?
01:59Is we've conducted due diligence, and it was deep due diligence.
02:03It was a thorough process, and I'm quite happy with where we've landed.
02:07It was deep due diligence.
02:09More like deep doo-doo.
02:13Wow.
02:15That's crazy.
02:16Yeah, I mean, like, look, you're, uh, you, you, so you think that was rude?
02:20That you didn't like that?
02:21Yeah, I, like, I, I mean, I get that you want to ask that question.
02:32I understand that.
02:35But the guy's right there.
02:39Right?
02:40But if a guy is a liar and a con artist and has done these kinds of things,
02:43like, snaking his way out of an organization, so what?
02:47Okay.
02:48Is it, like, there are some cardinal sins.
02:49There are some things you probably wouldn't forgive as a football player
02:52if somebody did something like that.
02:56Um, in sports, it kind of, I mean, like, we could say.
03:01You better be good.
03:02I mean, like, that's the other thing.
03:03Like, you can't just sit here.
03:05Let's, let's.
03:21I know, I know.
03:22Um, but, so, that's, I don't know, man.
03:26Like, do you?
03:28I'll do me.
03:29But that's just crazy.
03:30I, I just, you, you go at another grown man like that.
03:34And I think part of the reason why.
03:35Well, I think his point is, though, his point is, you said you did due diligence.
03:39How am I finding 19 people around the league, prominent people who think this is ridiculous
03:44that you would hire this guy?
03:45I can understand that.
03:47That's, that's a good question.
03:48Which means, like, you probably are just like, oh, this is going to do what I ask.
03:52That's a good question.
03:53Right?
03:53I could, but to say this guy said this, this guy said that, this guy said this, and the
04:00guy sitting right there, it's like, whoa.
04:03Even if I don't like the guy, right?
04:06Even if I don't like the guy, I think everybody should have a level of professionalism when
04:13asking questions.
04:14It's not like he went up there and went like this.
04:16This guy's a bum!
04:18No, that's worse.
04:20Bum.
04:21It's worse.
04:22What he did.
04:23I don't think it is.
04:24Really?
04:25All right.
04:25I don't think it is.
04:26If you're, if you are, if you think a hiring is outrageous, it'd be like if they
04:30he'd hired Nico Harrison.
04:32And we'd be like, who thinks this guy deserves another chance?
04:35Right.
04:36But, but also, also, I look at it like this.
04:43If the heat hired Nico, would you be shocked that Nico got hired or shocked that this organization
04:52made that decision?
04:53Both.
04:54I would just be shocked that this organization went, made that decision.
04:58Both.
04:58But if that, if it would be like if Pat Riley stepped down today though, and Nick Harrison,
05:02let's say he had some past relationship with him.
05:05Oh, and Nick Harrison.
05:05Oh, yeah.
05:05No, I'm just saying.
05:06Like, I don't, you know, I know that's already, it's a sensitive topic around, but let's just
05:09say that that was it.
05:11And they hired Nico Harrison and be like, who thinks this is a guy who traded Luca for
05:15a bag of donuts?
05:16Right.
05:16Who thinks that's a good idea?
05:18But they didn't end up with.
05:20So what?
05:21Okay.
05:21So corruption.
05:22That's how he's a good GM.
05:22And by the way, they still didn't keep him around because the owner didn't want that
05:26heat did remind me though, of this one.
05:27You got, you guys, uh, Brittany, you recall this, you were, you were, uh, we last when
05:31this press conference happened.
05:33This is when, uh, Giancarlo stand.
05:34Do you remember when he signed his extension?
05:36This, uh, this moment with Jeffrey Loria, this was a, this was an all timer.
05:43Mr.
05:43Loria, Gary Nelson with CBS four news here in Miami.
05:46Uh, if I could ask this, uh, your organization and you, quite frankly, are much despised among
05:58many in this community.
05:59There was the controversy over the building of the stadium with taxpayers money.
06:05The later revelations team had much more wealth than had been represented.
06:10A sitting mayor was recalled by angry taxpayers, uh, outraged over the building of this stadium
06:20with their money.
06:22Can a deal like this wash that much bad blood away?
06:30I think I'm going to take one quick stab at that.
06:33I appreciate that you're here today.
06:35Thank you so much.
06:37There's never been more insincere words uttered into a microphone than by David Sampson.
06:42No, he went, my favorite part about that is he went absolutely ABC nightly news voice.
06:51Oh, dude, that's a journalist voice right there.
06:54Yes.
06:55Mr.
06:55Loria, if I could ask.
06:59Wait, and then Dave jumped in front of the bullet.
07:01Yeah, that's his job.
07:05I saw a wee man just pop up.
07:07Yeah.
07:08Oh, no, Loria.
07:10Oh, you know, our guy might get hired.
07:12Who?
07:13You're, uh, you wasn't a, you're, um, the brother.
07:19Oh, your mark.
07:20Your mark.
07:21Yeah, we talked about that last week.
07:23Yeah.
07:23I don't think they should hire him.
07:25Not very good at his job.
07:28I mean, like, it just seems like there's a pool of GMs and guys like that, and they just
07:34keep going around in circles.
07:36I don't really understand it.
07:38The guy like coaches.
07:40It'd be, it'd be one thing if the guy be like, Oh, you got, you mean the guy who the
07:44organization
07:45as soon as he left had way more success.
07:47Right.
07:48But just think about this.
07:50The Browns got ready to build belly check and they were dancing in the streets.
07:53So?
07:54Like, but I'm just saying, like, just because he didn't work out for you, I'm just curious
07:59to know why.
08:00What's the, what's the, what's the rub though?
08:02Like, what's the rub?
08:03You know what I mean?
08:04Like, who cares?
08:05No, I know.
08:06I mean.
08:07I would imagine you could get a bunch of people that would be good candidates for that job
08:11that have, uh, better relationships down here are probably done things better professionally
08:16down here.
08:16Right.
08:17I know he did some things with rock nation and boxing.
08:19I mean, we were there with him with the Andre Ward thing, which by the way, as great as
08:23it was for Andre was a commercial flop.
08:25I mean, those fights did not, those fights did not do well.
08:27One of the second one was in the Mandalay Bay, which is kind of a rinky dink operation
08:31in this, in that day and age.
08:32Right.
08:33Now Andre got paid a ton of money.
08:34It was great for him.
08:35We love Andre Ward, but yeah, you know, this guy's sitting here being like, I'm not scared
08:38of Kovalev.
08:39Yeah.
08:40He's like, really?
08:43Mr.
08:44Loria, a sitting mayor was recalled.
08:49I mean, I felt like I was watching ABC.
08:52Easy.
08:53You were CBS.
08:55Mr.
08:56Loria, Gary Nelson with CBS four news here in Miami.
08:59Uh, if I could ask this, uh, your organization and you quite frankly are.
09:08Much despised.
09:09Much despised among many in this community.
09:12There was the controversy over the building of the stadium with taxpayers' money.
09:17The later revelations team had much more wealth than had been represented.
09:23A sitting mayor was recalled by angry taxpayers, uh, outraged over the building of this stadium
09:33with their money.
09:35Can a deal like this wash that much bad blood away?
09:43I think I'm going to take one quick stab at that.
09:46I appreciate that you're here today.
09:48Thank you so much.
09:48I like Loria in the background too.
09:50He's just like David.
09:52He didn't even have to say it.
09:53Go ahead, dude.
09:54Do your thing.
09:55He didn't even have to say it.
09:57Hey.
09:57By the way, Gary Nelson's spot on because Giancarlo Stanton's a Yankee and the Marlins
10:01are still on the hook for his money.
10:03Really?
10:03Yeah.
10:04How much of that money is he on the hook for?
10:05They're paying 10 million this year.
10:07I don't know how many more years they got left, but they're still paying a chunk of
10:09it.
10:10Oh my goodness.
10:10He's like the third highest paid Marlin.
10:13Well, the second one just walked out the door.
10:16The sheriff.
10:18I like the way he says, despised this.
10:24Yeah.
10:25Great stuff.
10:27Did you think that was a rude question?
10:29No.
10:31Because you ain't Loria.
10:32No, it's not.
10:33It's not even that.
10:34Like, there's a track record there.
10:36Well, this guy's got a track record.
10:38Let me say that I'm more familiar with.
10:42Yeah.
10:42Well, nobody cares about the Arizona Coyotes.
10:44Right.
10:44And that's, I think that's why it may, that's why I, that's why I threatened to send people
10:49to the Yotes.
10:49They don't even exist anymore because of this guy.
10:53Yes.
10:57Could this wash that?
10:58Well, the answer was no, Gary.
11:00It couldn't.
11:01And then he made a billion dollars by bilking Bruce Sherman and Derek Jeter.
11:05And Derek Jeter was just like, at least I'm going to get my franchise, Giancarlo Stanton.
11:10Yes.
11:12All right.
11:12We'll take a wait.
11:13They traded Giancarlo Stanton and they paying, with all the money that the Yankees have,
11:17they are still paying some of that salary?
11:19Yep.
11:21That right there is a bad move.
11:24Mm-hmm.
