A deep dive into the controversy surrounding the PGA Tour's no-cut Signature Events. Is removing the jeopardy of the cut line good for the sport, or does it take away the excitement and drama that fans love?
Transcript
00:00We're now heading into two no-cut events, and this is now the third of those in the last four
00:06weeks, being the PGA Tour signature events.
00:08Should they exist in that format, in the no-cut format, in any planned restructuring of the PGA Tour schedule
00:14next year?
00:15Or should we just completely do away with them?
00:20I think since the signature events came in, I've not been a fan whatsoever.
00:24However, I think every golf tournament should have a cut because there's just no jeopardy.
00:30Otherwise, you know, you can play horrendous golf and still earn a six-figure paycheck for it.
00:36I always remember a prime example for me was when I was at the Open in Troon and Max Homer
00:42held a putt on the 18th hole to make the cut on the number.
00:46And the emotion that he let out just to make the weekend was, you know, it just showed how much
00:51it cared to him.
00:52And I think when there's no jeopardy and there's nothing like that on the line, then what's the point?
00:57You're basically turning up knowing that even if you play rubbish golf, you're still going to get paid and you're
01:03still going to be at the event for all four days.
01:05I know that they've done it so they can guarantee they'll have the stars on the weekend, but it's almost
01:11like these players now,
01:12they're just going a bit lacklustre because they know they can perform averagely.
01:16And the chances are, even if they don't have a good finish in the signature events, they're still going to
01:20be high up the FedEx rankings because, you know, that's where all the big points are.
01:25So they need, I think what Rolap said back in March, I think is good.
01:30They need to have these full field and no cut events because, you know, you need to have players actually
01:38concentrating to actually,
01:39it means something to them, not knowing that they're going to be turning up on a weekend no matter how
01:44bad they play.
