00:05The most sympathetic building in the Australian landscape is the Tin Shed.
00:10It's been the most recognisable form of Australian design.
00:14The inspiration for this project was born out of this idea of stargazing.
00:20It's a building that sits comfortably in its environment.
00:23It's incredibly simple from the outside, but as you enter the building
00:27it starts to reveal itself as a more complex and enigmatic structure.
00:31A reframing of what luxury is.
00:42This building was designed in collaboration with Visit Victoria.
00:46Stella the Stargazer is her name.
00:49Stella's designed for the purpose of being mobile.
00:53And everything about keeping the weight down, keeping it the right dimension
00:58so it can travel on the road.
01:01It's designed using salvage materials from an original farm shack that I actually demolished.
01:07So the bones of this building literally come from the Victorian farming landscape.
01:12Stella currently resides in Victoria's southwest at the Bay of Islands.
01:17It sits on the traditional lands of the Eastern Mar families.
01:22This was an opportunity to show people the Great Ocean Road.
01:26To really connect them with the landscapes of Victoria.
01:29While experiencing the Twelve Apostles.
01:31The local wildlife vistas along the coastline.
01:36This building has a three kilowatt solar system on the roof.
01:40It's got a generator that kicks in when the battery runs low.
01:43Four thousand litre water tank and its own septic storage system.
01:47Making it fully off-grid and it gives back way more than it takes.
01:53Stella's essentially a simple one bedroom apartment.
01:55You have a kitchen area in the middle portion.
01:58To the left a queen size bed and banquet eating area.
02:03As you move through the kitchen area out towards the tow bar.
02:06You approach the bathroom area.
02:08It's a pretty simple compact building but everything you need.
02:14You enter through a beautiful hardwood glazed sliding door.
02:19And come in onto the main living area.
02:23The galley style kitchen comprises of a bar fridge.
02:28A clever little cooling and heating system.
02:31That sits underneath some storage cabinets.
02:34It's functional with a sink.
02:36A single burner gas cooktop.
02:39It also has a roaring meg fire.
02:42Which has dual function as a heater.
02:44And also a place to cook or heat the kettle up.
02:49The porthole windows will evoke this sense of inhabiting a ship or a boat.
02:54The idea is also to try and get a little bit of whimsy into the design.
03:01The dining table was made to be mobile.
03:04We wanted the space to sort of have two modes.
03:07One when the table and the bed are pulled in.
03:10The second mode is when it was expanded.
03:13And you had a nice open area in front of the cooking.
03:21The banquette seating with cushions.
03:24Complements this moveable table perfectly.
03:26With another recycled chair on the other side.
03:28Means it's a very functional and usable space.
03:34On the deck you have a bench seat.
03:37To enjoy the vistas and the outdoors.
03:41Next to the deck is a fire zone.
03:44With a fire pit that doubles as a cooking area.
03:47It's meant to evoke that sense of camping.
03:49And sitting by the fire.
03:50Cooking your meal outside.
03:55You enter the bathroom through a big sliding door.
03:59Which enables the space to become part of the main living area.
04:02The vanity comprises of hardwood reclaimed timber.
04:06And a sink that was once a milk separator used for making cream.
04:12The shower was always envisaged as almost being like an outdoor shower experience.
04:18By having the slatted floor.
04:20The water escapes through to the fray underneath very easily.
04:24But it also feels beautiful underfoot.
04:28The stargazing bed simply unpins and rolls out on a set of industrial rollers into the outdoors.
04:35Once you attach the bed via a pole to the window they operate as one.
04:40And the bed sort of eases the window open as it slides out to its final position in the stargazing
04:46setup.
04:52The lighting is designed to create a gentle ambience.
04:56To make the lighting an experience more than just a practical feature.
05:04The brief was very clear.
05:06It was about experience.
05:07That was the key principle in this building.
05:11That's where texture, materiality and warmth play a pivotal role in providing that sort of experience.
05:20You should be able to connect with the environment and the context through every part of the building.
05:26which job you'll probably help you in your come up with these manycorneres who are important in your perspective.
