Tasked with preserving the historical floor plan whilst making it more casual and functional, interior design studio Dax I drew inspiration from the architecture and materials of the building and its surrounds, using a series of rich colours to add a sense of depth and elegance to the space. The fiery red of the entryway sets the tone for the apartment and leads into the combined kitchen and dining area, where a compact but fully equipped all-black kitchen subtly contrasts the dark blue-grey (Inchyra Blue) painted walls. A floating sideboard painted in the same Inchyra Blue provides pantry space for the kitchen whilst a round cherry wood dining table fits perfectly into the small corner of the room. With its delicate balance of modernity and heritage, Dax I’s redesign truly feels at home in its surroundings.

00:05The apartment was in a very poor condition. I love finding projects in conditions like this
00:13because it gives us the opportunity to revive, redesign or completely rethink everything.
00:23My name is Jessica Kolb. I'm an architect specialized in interior design at interior
00:28design studio Daxi.
00:36The entire concept of the apartment revolves around creating a cozy and comfortable home.
00:43Together with our color consultant we use different colors to achieve a complementary look drawing inspiration
00:51from the stuckel facade of the neighboring buildings.
00:58The apartment is located in one of the most famous areas of Kreuzberg, known as Bergminkiez.
01:04It's a very charismatic neighborhood.
01:07This area is well known for his historical buildings built before 1900.
01:17The architecture and the history around here inspires me always.
01:20What colors and materials dominates in the building and around the building.
01:26We spent a lot of time bringing new life into the historical features and adding a touch of modern and
01:35vintage flair.
01:38The clients wanted to preserve the historical floor plan while ensuring it remains functional and casual.
01:45We spent a lot of time with the floor plan.
01:48We managed to keep all the walls and decided to switch things up by moving the kitchen right into the
01:55living room.
01:57As a result, the former kitchen is now the cozy bedroom.
02:04There is a small entrance as you enter the apartment.
02:09The corridor is painted in a fiery red to create a unique welcoming atmosphere as you enter.
02:19At the end of the corridor, you will find a built-in wardrobe that is the same color as the
02:24red wall.
02:26Since it's a relatively small space, painting it the same color gives it a sense of reduced visual clutter.
02:39As you walk through the red entrance, you are calmed by the kitchen painted in interior blue.
02:46Dark colors can be an ideal solution for rooms with limited natural light.
02:51They blend boundaries and make original wooden floors and white doors shine.
02:59We designed the kitchen with black, creating a contrast that gives the space a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.
03:08Below the kitchen counter, you find the fridge, the dishwasher, along with the oven.
03:16The separated deep kitchen sink, inspired by the sinks in artist studios, is made of black natural stone, matching the
03:24countertop.
03:26Above the sink, we've incorporated a drying rack.
03:30And we used a black lime plaster for the backsplash.
03:36Above the shelf, we have selected two wall lights, which also provides ambient lighting in the evening and makes a
03:43very nice atmosphere.
03:45We added a sideboard on the opposite side of the kitchen.
03:49The sideboard was designed to match the wall color, so it doesn't stand out too much.
03:56It's mounted on the wall, giving it a lighter appearance, especially in the small kitchen.
04:04The sideboard serves as pantry space for the kitchen.
04:12We chose a round table made of cherry wood for the dining area.
04:17It fits nicely into the small corner and offers better movement flow as you navigate in the limited space.
04:29The living space is in the room next door, accessible through a doorway.
04:37We chose to keep the original door that separates the living room and painted it white.
04:44In this room, there is a day bed, chosen by the customer, which can be used for relaxation or as
04:52an extra bed.
04:54We've kept the design quite simple, painting in the color of Dash of Scott from Little Green.
05:01We chose this earthy, natural color, semi-tier curtains that covers the entire room.
05:09This creates a feeling of security and privacy.
05:15There is a small balcony next to the room, which the customer has furnished with vintage furniture.
05:22The view of the historical facades creates special atmosphere, especially during the summer.
05:30The clients also selected a small vintage desk for the living room.
05:40For the sleeping area, we chose pitch blue from Perrin Ball for the walls,
05:46which adds depth and elegance to the small room.
05:50We designed a cozy nook and a platform bed with storage underneath to optimize storage space.
06:00We used wallpaper on the ceiling to complement the original ceiling corners.
06:07And we've used a wall lamp to create a soft ambience in the evening.
06:16We completely redesigned the bathroom.
06:20The bathroom is painted in a soft pink color called Pin Noir.
06:25And we used pink-laced tiles to create a pleasant effect.
06:32The subway tiles give the bathroom a classic and straightforward style.
06:36We used German-made tiles for both the floor and the wall.
06:42The wall tiles are similar to those seen on historical buildings in Berlin and in the subway.
06:52On one wall, we integrated a small storage cabinet.
06:56All the built-in storage matches the wall color, adding a touch of light pink to the classic style for
07:04a more understated finish.
07:06We hid the washing machine in the built-in wardrobe, which also provides enough space for towels and other bathroom
07:13items.
07:16My philosophy when it comes to designing space is being gentle with the architecture.
07:23For me, it was important to design a minimalist and invisible storage space in the apartment with minimal interventions.
07:36To create clearly defined zones characterized by the combination of natural and cloudy colors.
07:46For me, I would like to ask the
