00:00Hey, this is Per from Smash Into Pieces, and we'll be showing you our North American tour
00:17rig.
00:18So, it's pretty light, because we have to be able to fly with everything, so basically
00:26This is our monitor station and our backline station, so nothing special, it's two Kempers.
00:33I mean, it's more about the sounds that we're using than the actual hardware.
00:37I mean, Behringer X32 as our monitor mixer, connected to four in-ear systems for the band.
00:46The Kempers, I like a lot of, you know, to sneak in some fuss, it makes it, you know,
00:54for big choruses when the guitars are just like, almost like a synthesizer, it kind of
00:58gives that like a chainsaw thing that I like, and sometimes when it's more like riff-based
01:05we'll have something that is a bit more, you know, tight, low-end for palm-mutes and stuff
01:09like that.
01:10I think that the main guitar sound, it's a Marshall JCM-900, with like a fuss added in
01:19the effect loop, so, yeah.
01:23Main sound, the guitars, we use Solar Guitars, so, this one is mine, and it's a Baritone
01:3327-inch, with the Evertune bridge, so usually we don't switch guitars during the live set.
01:44We use the Kempers if we need to change like a key for some low-tune riff, we'll just transpose
01:49in the Kemper, and we're using the same guitars throughout the whole set.
01:55So, we're using, I'm using these D'Addario NYXL, and they're 10-52, so they're really
02:08thin strings, you know, for such a low-tune guitar, it's tuned in drop B, but then I replaced
02:16the lowest string with a 56, it's a bit thicker, the lowest string, but the funny thing is
02:24when you have like a Baritone with this scale, and the Evertune, it works really well with
02:29thinner strings, and it gives that, it feels better when you're doing palm-mutes and fast
02:34stuff to have thinner strings, for me, so, yeah.
02:39And it's the original pickup, it's the Duncan Solar Plus or something, so, I really liked
02:47it when I bought it, the original, so I kept it, but on my other guitar, I have the Lungreen
02:52M6, which has a bit more, like, dainty, maybe, yeah, a bit more, this one is more smooth,
03:01I would say, and the other one is more kind of forward in the high-mids.
03:06All the way up, and I even taped this, because when it's live and you're, sometimes you get
03:11the single-coil mode, so I just taped it for, yeah, nothing, only the bridge mic and the
03:20full-tone and volume.
03:22So this is pretty much the same one, but it's not the kind of treble, this is the, I guess,
03:30Power Strat or something, but it's a Solar, and it has these Fishman pickups, active ones,
03:38so it's pretty much the same guitar, but it gives, you know, a little bit of difference,
03:43so it's, yeah, when you're two guitars playing the same, like, chords in a chorus, then you
03:50get this, you can still hear us, like, differently, so.
03:55Now it's the same tuning, both are used on stage, and we have one of these as a backup,
04:01so, yeah.
04:03They're tuned in a drop B, and then we're going everything from, like, one half-step
04:10up to maybe five steps down, depending on, you know, if there's a really heavy breakdown,
04:16or, yeah.
04:18So it's easier to not have, like, fourteen guitars when you're traveling, it's just one
04:22stage guitar, and Kemper does the rest.
04:26Funny thing is, like, sometimes when we're playing the set acoustic, and you don't have
04:31the Kempers to transpose, it's like, you're so used to how you're supposed to play the
04:36riffs, so it's like, you gotta really think when you're without the transposing of the
04:42Kemper, so.
04:43So we don't use any pedal boards or cabs or anything, it's just Kemper straight into our
04:48monitor mixer, and then going to the front of house, so, and we just use, you know, nothing
04:55special, it's just the iPad where we, everyone monitors their own in-ear system.
05:01So we're using Logic, and inside Logic we have these MIDI switches for the Kempers,
05:10so during the set it just switches automatically, and we used to have, like, Behringer floorboards
05:18in case something goes wrong, but it's, you know, one out of a hundred that something
05:24goes wrong, so we just stopped using that as well, so, it works out well.
05:29And then we have all the different tracks channels for, yeah, synth and backing vocals
05:35and stuff, and then we have, like, meta events, cause there's markers for every song, and
05:43then I make the set list by programming where, yeah, just makes a playlist with the meta
05:50events, and I'm going to show you, obviously we use a digital kit, which is up on stage,
06:00and under the drum riser there's another X32 and a Mac Mini, which we're running Superior
06:08Drummer 3, so it's MIDI from the drums straight into Superior Drummer, to the X32 on the stage,
06:17which sends it here, and then to Frodom House.
06:20So this is basically the drum kit for our live show, it's, yeah, it's Bob Rock's, the
06:31foundation is Bob Rock, anyway, the kick, and then we're using, like, New York Avatar
06:37coded toms, the Near C snare, and then a couple of triggers, so it's like, yeah, mostly,
06:50you know, soft hits and ghost notes, that's just original Superior Drummer, but then,
06:55like the hardest hits are, you know, with some triggers to make it even more, you know,
07:01canon, or, you know, gunshots sounding, so this is not our kit, it's a, we rent the kit
07:08when we fly over here, so it's, that's a good thing about these digital drums, because all
07:14the sound is in our, the settings in our Superior Drummer, which is underneath here, it's just
07:20a Mac Mini M1, and straight into an X32, and, yeah, it's just the standard setup, we added
07:30like a extra snare, which, for, like, electro sounds, and sometimes we have extra kick just
07:37for electronic sounds, but, yeah, it's a Roland TD-50X, so, this is the hardware that we're
07:46using for Front of House, this hardware is called Emil, and it's the, our Front of House
07:51tech, and we keep it really light, as you can see, this is, like, the Front of House
07:56console, which is, again, X32, a small Waves server, and it's, well, no console, it's just
08:06an iPad, which you can unplug and just go wireless, and, you know, standing in the audience,
08:13and then we're using a Computeus to do the Waves server stuff, so, yeah, we're pretty
08:21much doing, like, Waves chains for vocals, guitars, and then we have, like, instrument
08:28bus, and, like, a master channel, and a bit of small tricks, ducking the kick against
08:33the bass, and, you know, classic stuff like that, so, yeah, it's a really light and neat
08:40Front of House, and today Emil even served it by changing a few Cat5 cables, and yesterday
08:49we had audio dropouts, so, no more.
08:53We think it's both the cable, I hope, but we will see tonight if it works.
08:58And Emil usually does this, since everything is digital, there's nothing except the microphones
09:05that pick up sound from, you know, so feedback, usually we, it's only the lead vocals you
09:13gotta check, and, yeah, it's really important for us, cause we're, you know, no cabs or
09:18nothing, to really have, like, a good master EQ and really dial in the room properly, so
09:24Emil usually does, like, his measuring mic, white noise, and just make sure that you get
09:31a good clean start, and then, yeah, we run a few songs and he adjusts what needs to be
09:38done for this specific venue, so, yeah.
09:44It's a easy-peasy fly rig, but it sounds good.
09:49So thank you for checking out our gear, and, yeah, please check out our webpage, smashintopieces.com
