00:00Good morning.
00:02This is another day of making our favorite small town better.
00:04Erin, we got to go, babe.
00:06Go pick some old sad houses.
00:08Ben, let's go.
00:09Growing up, I didn't see what was so special about Laurel.
00:12So every day we make sure our girls see it.
00:14Good morning, Katie.
00:15Hey.
00:16Can you believe we fixed up over 100 houses in Laurel?
00:18There's so much opportunity, so many unloved houses.
00:22I don't know what is going to go wrong in here today.
00:25I'm sure something.
00:27Girl, a bat just flew through here.
00:29It's not good.
00:31No way.
00:32We're about to see the house for the first time.
00:34This is the best part.
00:35Oh, my God.
00:37Holy cow.
00:38Are you serious right now?
00:40Ben, did you make this?
00:41Yeah, I made this.
00:43The real truth of living and working in your hometown is that you're going to see these people everywhere forever.
00:48It's your superpower, Erin.
00:50Color is her superpower.
00:51It is.
00:52It is perfect.
00:53Every day is different when you're renovating houses in Laurel, Mississippi.
01:00We're still in New York.
01:01We're boarding the plane in about two hours.
01:04And we'll be heading down to see Laurel for the first time.
01:07David Binger and Melanie Binger are brother and sister.
01:11David is an attorney.
01:12And Melanie is an accountant.
01:13They both have changed jobs recently, and they can work remotely.
01:18And they have been living in really small apartments in New York.
01:23Our family came from Soviet Ukraine.
01:26They were refugees.
01:27We grew up in Brooklyn, New York.
01:28But I think at this stage, we're looking for someplace that has a more comfortable pace of life, has friendlier
01:34people, has good weather.
01:36So we were looking at the south more generally.
01:39Hometown.
01:40The show really put Laurel on the map for us.
01:41Feels like a real community.
01:43If you want slower than New York.
01:46Have I got a place for you.
01:49We're coming down here looking for a house for each of us.
01:51Ben and Erin are going to show us some houses for me and some houses for Melanie.
01:55We've always been very close friends.
01:57Yeah, David has always been my best friend.
01:59This is our first day in Mississippi.
02:01We have never been here before.
02:02Oh, check that out.
02:03It's a pretty risky proposition, but we're excited about it.
02:06We're ready for some Mississippi roots.
02:08Where are y'all coming from?
02:10We just came down from New York.
02:11Very excited to be here.
02:12Yeah.
02:13I guess you guys get to try out your first y'all.
02:17Y'all.
02:18Yeah.
02:18I'm not sure that y'all are ready for our y'alls.
02:22We've got two houses.
02:23We're going to show them a house for David and a house for Melanie.
02:25They're both looking for similar houses.
02:27If these don't work, we can go look at more.
02:30It could be vice versa.
02:31Whoever likes it can like it.
02:33So this is your very first time ever in Mississippi.
02:36First time ever.
02:36First time.
02:37We're coming here with a budget of $275,000 for each of us.
02:41We're very excited to do something different.
02:42Yeah.
02:43Speaking of different, this first house, David, is for you.
02:47It's the Eddie house.
02:48This is small town Mississippi.
02:50Looks just like Brooklyn.
02:52Our tastes overlap a little bit, but I'm looking for a house with some space for my books, a space
02:58for an office where I can work remotely comfortably, a nice kitchen, and really a space to host people and
03:05entertain.
03:05And you wanted a yard.
03:07Definitely has a yard.
03:08David, have you ever cut grass?
03:10I have cut grass a little bit, but I've never had like a lawnmower to go around a space like
03:15this.
03:15Oh, you need a lawnmower here.
03:17A big one.
03:18So it's a half an acre.
03:20The house is three bedrooms, two baths.
03:23Okay.
03:24It's 1,900 square feet, and it's listed for $200,000.
03:27The Eddie family moved here in the 70s and then lived here for over 30 years, and Ken was an
03:33electrician.
03:34I'm thinking really small changes to the exterior.
03:37Sure.
03:38So we can save your money for the inside.
03:40Okay.
03:40You like a little bit of color.
03:41So I thought about what if you lost the shutters and you updated the window trim color.
03:46Oh, I like that a lot.
03:47And then updated, like added some color over to the garage doors.
03:50Oh, nice.
03:50A new front door.
03:52It's beautiful.
03:52It's very cozy.
03:53I also like the landscaping.
03:55You need some landscaping here.
03:57It's a little nude.
04:00I don't think I've ever sweat this quickly.
04:03Oh, girl.
04:04Wait for August.
04:06August is exceptional.
04:07I think this is what would be great for David.
04:09It's a great size.
04:10It has a good amount of outdoor space.
04:12The paint details would be about $10,000 on the exterior.
04:16Let's go talk about it.
04:17All right.
04:19All right.
04:20Come on in.
04:21Elegance.
04:22Oh, very cool.
04:23I love these floors.
04:24It would be great for your budget if we kept them, so that's good.
04:27I like them a lot, yeah.
04:27Okay, good.
04:28Yeah.
04:28There's three bedrooms down the hallway.
04:30One could be a home office, or you could keep it as a guest room.
04:33What are your thoughts on the arched doorway?
04:35Actually, I really like it.
04:36I like the way it separates the space.
04:38Well, I would update the paint and the lighting in here, and then that's kind of it.
04:42And then the kitchen is where we would make big changes.
04:46That is an enormous kitchen.
04:48Wow, that is so much space.
04:50This is funny because we feel like it's too small, and we want to make it bigger.
04:53Oh, my goodness.
04:54You can have it all.
04:55You can live, laugh, love in this kitchen.
04:57Yeah, that's the dream.
04:58The cool thing about this place is there's a great outdoor patio and deck.
05:02You have this sunroom that could be an office, or it could be a dining room.
05:06You want to have people over.
05:08Yep.
05:09I was thinking you might really love it if you had a better, bigger view of your backyard.
05:14If you lost this wall, and you had one big cased opening, and we built an island that runs this
05:21direction,
05:21you would have steps down to this sunroom on both sides of the island.
05:25Oh, cool.
05:26You would have the whole backyard view and all that light coming in here.
05:30That's stunning.
05:30And on this side of the island, you would have barstool seating.
05:33You would have a sink and a dishwasher built in.
05:35And on this wall, you would have the range and hood vent and fridge built in to custom cabinetry.
05:41Here, you would have a wall of cabinet doors, but one of these cabinet doors is a secret door into
05:48a pantry.
05:48You would have all that storage.
05:49And then on the other side of the pantry, you would have a mudroom.
05:53I like kind of connecting the light with the space.
05:55I really like your vision.
05:57This would be a $55,000 kitchen, pantry, mudroom, and living room.
06:01Most of that's going to the kitchen room.
06:03Sure.
06:04Sunroom?
06:04Sunroom.
06:05Okay.
06:05It's treated kind of like an indoor patio, but for you, it could become an office,
06:09because you imagine the end of the island would be a small bookcase,
06:12and you could add more bookcases over there.
06:14Oh, that would be very helpful, because we actually have a lot of books we like to read.
06:18Yeah.
06:19So as much book storage as possible.
06:21I think so.
06:21Really ideal.
06:22You could paint the room, and new lighting.
06:25But how do you feel about the floors?
06:26Because I was thinking you could keep them and save some money.
06:28I actually kind of like them.
06:29Okay.
06:30Yeah.
06:30So $10,000, which sounds like a lot, but I included freshening up the outside, the back patio,
06:36just pressure washing.
06:37Let's go out there.
06:37Oh, okay.
06:40I really like it.
06:41Oh, yeah.
06:42That's charming.
06:43Isn't that great?
06:44Very different from Brooklyn.
06:45Oh, 100%.
06:46I love this outdoor area here.
06:48This looks like a great place to sit and host people.
06:50I plan to hang out here all the time to see you.
06:53And there's that little outbuilding for storage.
06:55I like it a lot.
06:56At the end of the day, $75,000 on the renovation.
06:59So all in, $275,000.
07:01And all the mowing I can hope for.
07:02All in the mowing, yes.
07:04You could ever want.
07:06I like the house a lot.
07:07It's got charm.
07:08It's quaint.
07:08It's got nice big windows with lots of light.
07:10I think this is a great contender.
07:13Melanie, you want to go see a house?
07:15Yes.
07:15We're going to go to the Country Club Hills.
07:17Yeah.
07:17Yeah.
07:18It sounds very fancy.
07:19It does sound very fancy.
07:20Yeah.
07:21I'm super excited to see what they have for me.
07:23And hopefully, you know, we won't fight over which house.
07:26Who gets what house at the end.
07:28It's like Coney Island.
07:30It's different.
07:32You know, without the beach or the rides.
07:36I hope to find a house with some outdoor space, a few bedrooms, a nice big kitchen.
07:40And I also want a fireplace.
07:42So we've done a few houses in this neighborhood.
07:45All young people.
07:46I am.
07:47It reminds me of my neighborhood in high school.
07:48But this is the Tanner House.
07:50I love it.
07:51Yeah?
07:51It's beautiful.
07:52I love the brick.
07:53I like all the greenery.
07:54I love the big trees and the bushes in the front.
07:57Where David's house lacked landscaping, yours is a little overboard.
08:02But, I mean, there's so much of that that you could use.
08:05Rooney and Bobby Lee Tanner bought the house in 1967, and then the family owned it until last year.
08:11Wow.
08:11So 60 years.
08:13And they took great care of it.
08:13That's incredible.
08:14When you come inside, you'll see it.
08:15This one's listed for $175,000.
08:18It's three bedrooms, two baths, 2,100 square feet.
08:21I would just also like to say, suppose David prefers this one and you prefer the other one.
08:26You can switch it up either way.
08:27Yeah, okay.
08:28But I had some thoughts.
08:29If you trimmed it back, look at the house that's hiding behind there.
08:34It's so charming.
08:35And you updated the trim color around the windows, got a new front door, painted the gable and all the
08:40trim like a deeper cream that's closer to a tan.
08:44That really shows off the big windows as well.
08:46Paint, landscaping, $10,000 on the exterior.
08:49Okay.
08:49But the inside is in such great shape.
08:51Very different.
08:52This looks untouched since it was built.
08:56Get ready.
08:57It's a marshmallow world.
08:58Oh, wow.
08:59You ain't kidding.
09:01It's kind of, it feels like you're inside of a wedding cake.
09:04Yes, it does feel that way.
09:06I mean that in a really positive way.
09:09I love wedding cake.
09:10Delicious.
09:11I'm not exactly sure what's supposed to happen in this room.
09:14Yes.
09:15This is a formal living room, but it doesn't have to be.
09:18Do you need an office at home?
09:19Yes.
09:19I have a lot of books too.
09:21Yes, I do.
09:22It's like the library becomes your formal living room, I think, in that world.
09:25That would be so nice.
09:27That's a cool idea.
09:28The carpet is crazy clean.
09:30I would, however, prefer to not have any carpet.
09:33We'll show them the very exciting news.
09:37So underneath the carpet here, you have nice oak floors.
09:42That's beautiful.
09:43Yeah.
09:44They could be refinished that we think probably run throughout the bedrooms and everything.
09:49I bet not in the kitchen.
09:51New paint, new lighting, some bookcases.
09:54So in here, five grand.
09:56That includes the formal dining room.
09:58No, not a formal dining room kind of person.
10:01Reading about you and the colors that you love.
10:03I thought it would be interesting if this room had a color-drenched deep teal color, maybe?
10:10I love that.
10:11Speaking of old, this kitchen.
10:14It's something else.
10:18And I love it.
10:20It's huge.
10:22Oh my goodness.
10:23Isn't that crazy?
10:24I think I could fit my entire apartment in this kitchen.
10:27It looks like a lot to clean.
10:29I don't know if I could get used to that.
10:30It's a lot.
10:31Do you like to cook?
10:32I do like to cook.
10:33This is the stove top.
10:34What?
10:35What is that?
10:36Look.
10:37Isn't it crazy?
10:38It's a Murphy stove.
10:39Oh my goodness.
10:40A Murphy stove.
10:42I have never seen anything like that.
10:44Does that work?
10:44Does that work?
10:46Oh my God.
10:47You're going to make the best soup.
10:49I ain't never in my life.
10:51I've never seen that.
10:52Look how dangerous.
10:53Yeah.
10:54But here's what I was thinking.
10:56So we would take out the existing cabinetry.
10:58This entire wall could be built-ins like a pantry basically.
11:02Floor-to-ceiling cabinets.
11:04That would be cool.
11:05The oak floors in the rest of the house don't continue in the kitchen.
11:08So we would get an engineered oak floor and we would color match.
11:12Here where the fridge is, it would still be there but built into new cabinetry.
11:16That closet there has the hot water heater.
11:18And so you could just have cabinet doors there that would disguise it.
11:22And then countertops would continue around there with your range and your hood vent on
11:26that wall in the center.
11:27And a big island here with the sink and dishwasher.
11:32I love that idea.
11:33And then we could take out the peninsula between the kitchen and the living room.
11:38And then we would have a really big generous opening.
11:41That sounds amazing.
11:42I mean, honestly, this space is so big, you could probably fit two islands in here.
11:45A double island gets expensive because then you're double countertops.
11:48Double countertops.
11:49So currently, with one island, we're at 55 grand for the kitchen.
11:53Wow.
11:53And in here...
11:55It feels like you're in the, like, grand lodge of a summer camp somewhere.
12:00I love the fireplace.
12:02I love the huge windows.
12:03Awesome that you get a fireplace.
12:04My house didn't have a fireplace.
12:06That's pretty cool.
12:07They made your favorite.
12:09You could update the fireplace to be more in line with what you've shown me in inspiration pictures
12:14if you did, like, a smooth mortar over the whole thing.
12:17Can I ask you guys a question?
12:18Yeah.
12:19Looking at the house from the outside, it looked like the roof was pitched.
12:22Is it possible to vault the ceiling and have, like, a little bit more space in here?
12:29David, anything is possible.
12:32It's just money.
12:33That's the spirit, then.
12:34It's just money.
12:35Do you even want to vault the ceiling, though?
12:36He's asking.
12:37This ain't your house, David.
12:38It sounds like David likes this house better.
12:40Or, or, we could vault the ceiling for you, and then we could go show you another house.
12:45I like this house.
12:46And I do also kind of like the idea of the vaulted ceiling, though.
12:50Okay.
12:50We could find out what it would cost.
12:52But wait, you haven't even seen the super secret surprise.
12:55There's more.
12:56That's right.
12:58VHS storage.
12:59Oh, my goodness.
13:01That is so specific.
13:03That's a childhood throwback.
13:05That is cool.
13:06I appreciate it.
13:07For the living room update, flooring, mortar smear, all total 15 grand.
13:13It's another 15 grand to rewire it, which puts the renovation at 100 grand.
13:17All total, $275,000.
13:20That's right at the top of your budget.
13:21Vaulting the ceiling, double islands.
13:24Those are all things that we can go back to the drawing board.
13:27It's just funny.
13:29It's just funny.
13:53Yeah.
13:53We can go back to the deck, for sure.
13:55Maybe turn these windows into a door somehow.
13:57Turn these windows into a door coming out onto a deck.
14:00I mean, that would be rad.
14:02That would be awesome.
14:04You could do, like, arched French doors.
14:06You do love your arches.
14:08You do love the arches.
14:10I mean, if we're dreaming, that would be really expensive.
14:12David's ideas were, I thought they were expensive, but we're, like, 50 grand over budget at this
14:18point.
14:18It is big dreams.
14:20Nothing's impossible.
14:21It's just money.
14:28Hey there.
14:29Hello.
14:30Melanie and David called us up.
14:32They wanted to get together and to talk about houses.
14:35We loved your ideas for both of them.
14:36But?
14:37We've been doing a lot of thinking.
14:39I really, really liked the Tanner house, all the additions that we talked about.
14:44I really liked the house that you guys showed me, but I also really liked the design concepts
14:48and the room and the space in the house that you showed Melanie.
14:51It's a bigger house, yeah.
14:53Mm-hmm.
14:53We're thinking about going in on the Tanner house together.
14:56Together.
14:58Hold up.
15:02Whoa.
15:03Have y'all lived in the same house as adults before?
15:07Melanie and I ended up getting stuck living together during the COVID pandemic.
15:11Oh.
15:11She had just come up to visit me for the weekend, and it happened to be the weekend that everything
15:15shut down.
15:16We kind of developed a good rhythm, good routine, and we kind of think that, especially in a house
15:21with so much more space, we could have our own spaces and live together.
15:25We didn't kill each other.
15:26Not many siblings have an opportunity to live in the same house once they're adults.
15:30Yeah.
15:31All of the design ideas that you guys had for the house were over Melanie's budget.
15:37Don't, whoa now, don't put that on me, David.
15:40These were not my ideas.
15:42They were the ideas we all collectively made these two.
15:44Okay, sure, yeah.
15:46Well.
15:46I mean, it's pretty smart financially.
15:48Actually, you could do everything if you pull your resources.
15:52Yeah.
15:52The Eddy house has less square footage than the Tanner house.
15:57It makes sense, if you're going to share one, to go Tanner and go all the way.
16:02If they want two islands, get two islands.
16:04You can afford it.
16:05One for each of us.
16:06Go back.
16:07Go home.
16:08Yeah.
16:09Okay, so the plan for the kitchen stay is mostly the same.
16:12We're just going to have double islands.
16:13And since we're going to embrace the arches in the living room, I think we do an arched
16:18hood vent above the range.
16:19Yeah.
16:19I think so.
16:20Yeah.
16:20Okay.
16:21We open up the vaulted ceiling.
16:24Yep, really get some height in there.
16:25Doors on each side of the fireplace.
16:27They could be arched because they're going to be custom built.
16:30That's right.
16:31You do love your arches.
16:31I do.
16:32And then those open up to a huge back deck.
16:34I think it could be fun to paint it and bring out that green we used in the kitchen.
16:39That all sounds amazing.
16:40Okay.
16:41So, I mean, you'd be at like $325 now.
16:44Saved a ton of money.
16:45Well, congratulations.
16:47Yeah.
16:47On your very smart financial decision.
16:48Thank you so much.
16:49I'm very excited.
16:50Welcome home.
16:51I mean, can we claim this design at this point?
16:54Nope.
16:55No, we cannot.
16:57But we will execute it.
16:58Yeah.
16:59Exactly the way they want it done.
17:01This is way easier than doing two houses, I'll tell you that.
17:09David and Melanie, brother and sister, are living here together.
17:12Mike, you got any brothers or sisters?
17:13I got two brothers and a sister.
17:15Could you live with them?
17:16I'd kill every damn one of them.
17:21All right.
17:21Let's do this.
17:32Let's pull it up from over here.
17:34Okay.
17:37Uh-uh.
17:40Golly.
17:41That went in my mouth.
17:44I hate carpet.
17:45It's awful.
17:46All right.
17:47Let's see how it looks.
17:48It's, like, perfect.
17:50Look at that.
17:51This might be, like, the new prettiest floor we've ever uncovered.
17:54Best we've ever uncovered.
17:56We can sand them and stain them to match the engineered floors that are going to go in the
18:00kitchen and living room.
18:12This is the great ceiling raise.
18:15Yeah.
18:16I'm trapped here.
18:18The biggest room in the house is this den, but the ceiling's being so low.
18:22The proportions are just out of whack.
18:24And if you raise the ceiling, the room feels like it is properly voluminous.
18:29I put a mark at the bottom at three and a half, Mike.
18:32We are going to put up new ceiling joists so that when we put up our new sheetrock, it
18:38is straight.
18:39These aren't structural, right?
18:41These are just to hold up the sheetrock.
18:43Just to hold up the sheetrock.
18:44Okay.
18:45So once we get all this cleaned up, we'll take out every other one and then come back
18:50in with more bracing.
18:52This is crazy.
18:52Isn't it?
18:53It feels even more like a summer camp dining hall.
18:56Yeah.
18:56Can we talk about the fireplace around?
18:59Yes.
18:59Because Melanie had some real specific wish.
19:03I heard you explain that we were going to the...
19:05We're going to smear the brick because she loves that stuccoed, smooth look.
19:10But then we're going to go all the way up?
19:11Yes.
19:12What I was thinking is, could you somehow chisel off this step out so that it all is flush so
19:19that the whole fireplace around is this depth all the way up?
19:23And you just build fur out a little fake wall that continues it?
19:27We're going to do mortar so that it's all smooth and you think it's one continuous surface.
19:32I love it.
19:34The ceiling...
19:35It's a work in progress.
19:36But no, we're like there, though.
19:38Oh, yeah.
19:39It's going to happen and you can really see how...
19:41It's kind of like turning 40.
19:42Like, it's gonna happen.
19:43You can see it coming.
19:47It's me.
19:47I can see it coming.
19:49What do you want to do for your 40th?
19:51Watch an Ole Miss football game and eat dips.
19:54I don't like to make a big deal.
19:55I mean, are you thinking like a cookie cake?
19:57This is like being a bride all over again.
20:00It's going to be awesome.
20:02It will be.
20:03I just want to be 40 in peace, you know?
20:14Hey, Troy just sent a video from Bangor.
20:18Just came by the Bangor house to check on the guys.
20:22And I've got bad news.
20:23We have got rot.
20:25Oh, gosh.
20:31Dang.
20:32Mm, joyce.
20:33The dishwasher's been leaking right here.
20:35And it is rotting all of these joyce out.
20:38All of these joyce in here.
20:39Half the kitchen.
20:40We're going to have to pull and replace all of it.
20:42It's going to take us a couple of days and probably be at least $1,000.
20:46I had scheduled Mr. Gregg to come by this week to measure for cabinets.
20:51He won't be able to then is what that means.
20:53$1,000 could come out of contingency.
20:55In the big picture, that's not a huge problem.
20:57$1,000.
20:59Y'all could start knocking out the brick for the double doors by the fireplace
21:02without having to get into the kitchen area, right?
21:05You could at least get something done.
21:07Now we're going to be a little behind.
21:09But I'll call Mr. Gregg.
21:18Hey, boss.
21:19Hey, girl.
21:20You like this air-conditioned wood shop, don't you?
21:22You had to come inside because sugar melts.
21:26We're paying this, right?
21:27Yeah.
21:27Okay, good.
21:28You like it?
21:29It's a lot of book storage, but it's maybe not enough.
21:32So how do we give them more book storage?
21:35And I thought about, you know, the Danner bookcase,
21:38the rotating bookcase that was like solid mahogany.
21:41It spins?
21:42The one that spins?
21:43It spins, and it's pretty big.
21:45How did you know it was a Danner bookcase?
21:46I've been doing some research.
21:48I wanted to say the word so you'd know I'm fancy like you.
21:51I didn't know that's what it was called.
21:52You didn't?
21:53Well, I think they're cool, but I didn't know it was called a Danner bookcase.
21:55John Danner built the first Danner bookcase.
21:57Really?
21:57Is that why they call it a Danner?
21:58Yeah, it won some awards in Paris in 1876.
22:02The legs, it's like a rolling desk chair.
22:04We have an old office chair.
22:07If I got it, could you take it apart?
22:10Sure.
22:10You want to run and get it, and I'll start working on these?
22:13Okay, I'll be back.
22:18While she's doing that, I'm going to piece together a makeshift shelf with what I've got
22:24here in the shop.
22:25I think that this is going to end up being a really cool piece of furniture.
22:30It's not a gorgeous chair, but I think it'll work.
22:34That's a nice chair.
22:35This was just me mocking up an idea.
22:38Okay, I like it.
22:39So then you would just have to drill a hole through the base.
22:43I mean, this post?
22:45Yeah, what I would probably try to do is put this shaft in there.
22:51Then the shaft is what spins.
22:54That would give them a lot of book storage.
22:56Mm-hmm.
22:57I think it's perfect.
22:58Mom is making garlic shrimp pasta for supper.
23:01I know.
23:02I'm going to head there.
23:03We'll see you in a little bit.
23:04All right, I'll be there in a little bit.
23:05Love you.
23:06Love you.
23:07Love you.
23:15All right, are you wanting to use the grinder to cut this?
23:18With the grinder first, we're going to score our level line right here.
23:22Okay.
23:23Score it on that side.
23:24Then we'll use the hammer drill and try to get the brick out without breaking them.
23:27Try to save the bricks for our brick layers.
23:29Exactly.
23:30All right, so then we'll have our arch doors coming out onto our deck.
23:34That should be the end of the deck right there.
23:36That's going to be nice.
23:37Make sure you mask up.
23:39It's about to get dusty.
23:39I know.
23:39It's going to be real dusty.
23:41So to get there, we're going to actually have to cut and chisel brick.
23:44It is a messy, messy job, but very satisfying.
23:48We're saving all the bricks we can because when they patch in, we need to have matching brick.
23:54Always good to have extra matching bricks.
24:00Oh, hey.
24:01Knock, knock.
24:02I never want to scare someone who's on a stall.
24:05No, it's a good idea.
24:05Look at the doors.
24:07Isn't it going to be great?
24:08It will be.
24:09It's almost there?
24:10Yeah.
24:11This is apparently.
24:12Yeah, well, this is great.
24:13You could park a truck on it now.
24:15It's just all new.
24:16I mean, that little dishwasher did a lot.
24:19And it looks like big things are happening here.
24:21Big things.
24:22Go see.
24:22What is the smoke?
24:23Oh, my God.
24:25How's that going?
24:27It's dusty.
24:28Yeah.
24:29And hot.
24:29I'm sorry.
24:30It's all right.
24:31It looks so pretty.
24:32All she wanted was arches, arch doorways, somewhere, anywhere.
24:38All right.
24:38We're going to start chiseling.
24:39It shouldn't be as dusty.
24:40Wear a mask, y'all.
24:41All right.
24:42And tomorrow's half as good as today.
24:46We'll be fine.
24:49We'll be fine.
24:53Island number one.
24:56Islands in the stream.
24:57Yeah.
24:58I'm excited to see the islands.
24:59That's great.
25:00But the arch.
25:02Did you bring the arch?
25:02Is it in the truck today?
25:04We're going to get there real soon.
25:06Two island day.
25:08Archipelago.
25:09Archipelago.
25:10How do y'all say it?
25:11Which way?
25:11The string of islands.
25:13That's what today is.
25:16Archipelago.
25:16The word of the day.
25:18Here we come.
25:20Boy, when they said we're getting out of New York City, they said we are going all the way.
25:24We're going to get all the islands.
25:27We're going to get all the cabinets.
25:28Two islands.
25:29Two arch doors.
25:31I love that Melanie loves arches.
25:32They really do add something.
25:35Architecturally, they're always good, I think.
25:37I've rarely met an arch I didn't like.
25:46How about that?
25:47I'm going to sit back now.
25:48That was kind of scary.
25:50It looks amazing, though.
25:52We're giving it to her here, and then it echoes there on the two back doors, and they are going
25:57to love it.
25:58Y'all, that was a lot.
25:59That was very heavy.
26:00That was heavy.
26:06It's Mike and Mike day, and it's hump day.
26:08I feel like we got very lucky today.
26:10I mean, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
26:12Oh, and it's hump day.
26:13It's arch day.
26:14Oh, gosh, Darren.
26:20He's going to want to turn it flat.
26:22It's also the first day of school.
26:23There were tears.
26:24We're doing anything we can to laugh about today.
26:26You've got to laugh to keep from crying.
26:29Here we go.
26:29Three, two, one.
26:37That looks really pretty.
26:44These doors are custom-built mahogany, French, arched, glass.
26:50Beautiful.
26:51This is such a nice feature.
26:53Yeah.
26:55Oh, nice.
26:57It's so fairytale.
27:00It goes terrific with that right there, too.
27:02I'm taking that as a really big compliment coming from you.
27:05It is looking great.
27:06Thanks.
27:06I think that's just TV talk.
27:08No, it's not TV talk.
27:10I don't have no TV talk in me.
27:13That's real.
27:14Not even a little.
27:20The house looks a little more energetic now.
27:23Paint is happening inside the house and outside the house.
27:28The trim paint looks great.
27:29I wanted to match the mortar color with this cream.
27:32And then we also have a little soft green accent on our windows.
27:39Okay, so what we had before was this fireplace that came up to maybe here, and it was stepped
27:48up with brick.
27:49They took those down.
27:51What Melanie is really wanting is kind of this monolithic fireplace wall, where it's just
27:59almost a smooth concrete look.
28:02But I don't really understand how we can take such different textures.
28:06This is totally smooth.
28:07This is extremely rough.
28:09I've done these before.
28:10What you do is you mix up the same order we used to do a German smear with, and instead
28:14of just, you know, putting a little here and there with some of the brick showing, you
28:18basically just want to do a solid coat over it, where it fills everything in.
28:22Then you just get another coat, and you go from the floor to the ceiling with everything.
28:25That way, everything just kind of blends in and matches.
28:27You feel like you can match texture.
28:29Yep, you just have a slick, smooth finish all the way to the top.
28:32I have not ever done this before, so this is something new.
28:36But I think to get the look that she really wants, we keep it monochromatic, use the same
28:42color that we're doing in the rest of the room.
28:45She really, I think, wants the focus on these doors that were added.
28:48Oh, yeah.
28:48I think that'll look good.
28:49Okay.
28:49Let's see what happens.
28:50All right.
28:51I ain't gon' hesitate.
28:54I need to hustle, hustle.
28:57Stand up and take my place.
29:00I need to hustle, hustle.
29:05Yeah!
29:07Oh, man, I love it.
29:10We haven't ever used this stone before.
29:12You sure?
29:13Yes, I'm sure.
29:14I thought this was Misty Carrera.
29:15No, not at all.
29:17Misty used to be all anybody wanted.
29:19But Melanie specifically asked for countertops that don't have gray veining, that have warmth.
29:25This is called Sunset Boulevard Quartz, but it has, like, rosy brown.
29:30Countertops are something new.
29:31We haven't used this before.
29:33It's a little higher budget item, but David and Melanie combine their budgets so we can do
29:37things like higher budget countertops.
29:39Look at how pretty!
29:41It's the color of the doors.
29:43Soon, we'll have the engineered wood floors come in, and that will be the medium brown
29:48that you see, like, on the doors and in this veining.
29:51It's going to warm up a whole lot.
29:54Quartz is a man-made stone.
29:56Gives the appearance of marble.
29:57They're coming out with so many interesting new colorways that are not just white.
30:02I'm sure you wore stretchy shorts.
30:04Carrera really had a big moment with marble in the last 20 years, and now people are stepping
30:09away from the gray veining and more interested in warmth, which I am thrilled about.
30:14You like it?
30:16I love it.
30:17Feel good about this?
30:18With the cabinet color it especially.
30:20And then you can have seating on both sides, literally just like a dinner table.
30:25It's really pretty.
30:34The floors are being refinished.
30:36From the paint color on the cabinets to the veining in the countertops to the wood floors
30:41we're bringing in, everything has a little bit of yellow in it.
30:44So when you add that, it just reads as warmth.
30:48Let's see how this match turned out, Ricky.
30:51Do they look good?
30:52I asked Mike to match this color.
30:54It is perfect.
30:55Is it?
30:56Oh my gosh.
30:57That's like all I cared about was that whatever we did with the oak floors, it would match
31:03our new engineered wood.
31:05It is perfect.
31:08Carpenters are finished.
31:09They're building the deck on the back.
31:10It's going to be 21 by 20.
31:13This is really transformative for how the house is used.
31:16Sitting out on the deck looking at the house, it is gorgeous.
31:20It looks so good.
31:24David, David.
31:25Okay.
31:26How you doing?
31:27Well, I've been better.
31:30I guess you heard the bad news.
31:31I got five boxes that has busted all to pieces.
31:39We ordered this tile the first time.
31:42And it didn't come?
31:43No.
31:43It got lost in transit.
31:45So we ordered it again.
31:47Mm-hmm.
31:47The second order comes in.
31:49That's what came round two.
31:50Right.
31:51You've obviously had enough that you could move forward because this looks great.
31:55This is beautiful.
31:55That's true.
31:56Well, that's why I went on and did all this.
31:58Is there more?
31:59Do you have enough to just finish now?
32:01I do not.
32:01So this time, when it comes in Friday.
32:05If it comes in Friday.
32:06Yeah.
32:06Yes.
32:07And if it's not broken.
32:09If it's not broken.
32:10There's a real good possibility we're not going to get any more tile.
32:13This is it.
32:13For now.
32:14For now.
32:15Dave and Melanie bought plane tickets.
32:17So they're coming no matter what on Tuesday.
32:20Well, at least we got this.
32:22Uh-huh.
32:23Everything will look completed just in case, though, the tile doesn't come.
32:27It's already painted.
32:27I feel like you've created a great stopping point for yourself.
32:31Exactly.
32:31And if you go any further, it gets bad and awkward.
32:34Like, if you only have enough to get to here.
32:37I mean, I want to believe it.
32:38Our here is her birthday.
32:40This is Erin's birthday, not the homeowner's.
32:42Erin's birthday.
32:43Yep.
32:44She's turning 40.
32:45When do you turn 40, David?
32:46A long time ago, Ben.
32:47No.
32:48I don't believe that.
32:50I'm old enough to be your dad.
32:52I doubt it.
32:54It's how you are in your heart, David.
32:56Yeah.
32:56How young are you in your heart?
32:57How old are you in your heart?
32:58About 39.
32:59That's what I thought.
33:00We're the same age.
33:01Right.
33:01For my birthday, I'm making a decision right now that we're going to have a backsplash right
33:06here, no matter what.
33:07That's true.
33:08And if it doesn't come, we have beautiful painted walls that will get tile when it comes.
33:14Well, that'd work great.
33:15Eventually, it has to come in.
33:16And even if Dave and Melanie are already in here.
33:19I can still do it.
33:20Because for 40, I've decided I'm going to be a more flexible person.
33:24All right.
33:25I like that.
33:25I'm just going to roll with it.
33:28Okay.
33:2840 and flexible.
33:29All right.
33:30Flexible.
33:31I love changing my plan at the last minute.
33:33Everything is fine.
33:35Thank you, Erin.
33:46What not?
33:48Happy birthday.
33:49Hey.
33:50How are you?
33:51I'm good.
33:52Oh.
33:53Happy 40th.
33:55Been there.
33:55Done that.
33:56Yeah.
33:57Pretty big.
33:57Yeah.
33:58Brought us some lunch.
33:59You're so sweet.
34:00Fish tacos.
34:02But we're having a party tomorrow.
34:04You don't have to do anything.
34:05I just wanted to, I think you're making a little bit too light of 40.
34:1040 was big for me.
34:11You know, I like milestones.
34:13I don't think you appreciate them as much.
34:14You try to ignore it?
34:15I don't try to ignore it.
34:17A little bit.
34:18Yeah.
34:18I don't want to be made a fuss over.
34:20Happy birthday.
34:22I love you.
34:22Let me share something.
34:24So who we got here?
34:26This house?
34:27Yeah.
34:27Who's coming in?
34:28You don't know these people.
34:30They're not locals.
34:31They are moving here from New York.
34:34It's a brother and sister.
34:35Okay.
34:36Who decided to pull all their resources to get a bigger house that's fancier than what they
34:42could do separately.
34:44Gotcha.
34:44Do you want to buy a house with me?
34:46Do you think you could live with me as a grown-up?
34:48No.
34:48No?
34:49No.
34:50No.
34:50But if we did live together, what music would we listen to?
34:53See, when would it?
34:54In total.
34:55Africa.
34:56Yes.
34:57Oh, wait a minute.
34:58Nope.
34:59Didn't bring it.
35:00Had a candle for your taco.
35:03Gross.
35:03I mean, I don't even know how it would stay in there.
35:06We could wedge it.
35:06We could figure it out.
35:07Between the onions.
35:08Yeah.
35:08I don't know about all that.
35:15This house is finished.
35:16And my favorite thing is about how the living room transformed so much and making a room
35:22that felt like it was a camp lunch hall into a place where you would want to invite people
35:26over.
35:27Books are so important to Melanie and David.
35:31They have a lot of them.
35:32I'm trying to help.
35:33I'm trying to accommodate.
35:35It's pretty cool that Dave and Melanie have a friendship that'll be forever because they're
35:41siblings to build a house together.
35:44That's awesome.
35:46Flight was okay.
35:47Yeah.
35:47Very smooth.
35:48Good deal.
35:49No, thankfully.
35:50Erin just turned 40.
35:52So, you know, travel's getting a little bit harder with us getting older.
35:54Oh, my gosh.
35:55All right.
35:56Welcome to the banger house.
36:00I love it.
36:02Oh, my God.
36:04I love it so much.
36:05Unbelievable.
36:06So, it's not drastically different from what it was.
36:09It was little changes, updating the trim colors and accentuating what made the house architecturally
36:15special was the goal.
36:17That's very cute.
36:18I love the color of the steps and the door and the little window.
36:22It just looks very friendly to me.
36:24Yeah.
36:25It's perfect.
36:26And you can see the whole house.
36:28I mean, yeah.
36:28This is all the original landscaping.
36:30We just pruned it way back.
36:32I think this kind of charm is what we moved to Mississippi for.
36:35It just feels like coming home.
36:36I love it.
36:38The inside is where the huge changes happen.
36:40So, come inside.
36:41You won't believe it.
36:43It's crazy.
36:47Oh, my God.
36:49Oh, wow.
36:51Oh, my God.
36:56This is incredible.
36:59Oh, my God.
37:00That is gorgeous.
37:02Look at that desk and the bookshelf.
37:05Look at the floor.
37:06It's beautiful and peaceful and everything is just amazing.
37:10I have a lot of things I want to talk about, but right now, two things.
37:13First, Melanie, let me see your fingernails.
37:19Love that.
37:21That's amazing.
37:23Okay, so these floors were the best thing your house gave us because when we did the new floors
37:29in the kitchen area, we stained these to match those, and it's perfect.
37:32But I wanted to show you this bookcase.
37:34This is called a Danner case, and it rotates.
37:38Quarterstone White Oak.
37:40These were designed and built for libraries and offices because they're space-saving.
37:43You can put tons of books on here.
37:46I'm speechless looking at this setup.
37:48But this one's not a Danner.
37:49It's a Vinner.
37:52A rotating bookcase.
37:53I don't think I've ever seen that before.
37:55There's more to say.
37:57Come see your dining room.
37:58Oh, my.
38:00I love the light fixture, the window dressings, and that you match the walls in here.
38:06Oh, my goodness.
38:08You guys just read me like a bookie to me.
38:12I love the light fixture.
38:13And I love the wall color.
38:15It's perfect.
38:16Good.
38:17Clearly, it's a color I enjoy.
38:18You are real into this color.
38:20But you have got to go see your kitchen.
38:22It's so elegant and quaint.
38:24I love it.
38:29Oh, my God.
38:31Do you like it?
38:32I mean, this is unbelievable.
38:35Is this different from your apartments in New York?
38:39This would be the whole apartment.
38:40Yeah.
38:40This right here.
38:42It's like you pulled from deep within my, like, heart and soul, and you brought it up.
38:47And I just, like, I can't explain it any other way.
38:51This is amazing.
38:52First off, I love the color of the sink with the countertop.
38:55It's like a caramel color here and a taupe color in the sink.
38:57This looks so good.
38:59It really does.
39:00And then David wanted two islands.
39:02If you're going to have a huge kitchen, you might as well have two islands.
39:05You can have lots of people over.
39:07We did have one problem here.
39:09The floor was rotten right where that island is because that's where the sink was.
39:13Okay.
39:14It had leaked, and the subfloor was rotten.
39:16We had to fix that.
39:17It's an engineered hardwood.
39:18We were able to match the old floor to the new floor perfectly.
39:22You can't really tell.
39:23I mean, the colors are...
39:25Seamless.
39:25We vaulted the ceiling.
39:27Yes.
39:27And we did a monolithic-style fireplace, which was all over your inspiration.
39:34This is incredible.
39:36The arch doors gives us this really awesome moment of symmetry right here where you're looking out,
39:41and you have the fireplace, you have the vaulted ceilings.
39:44They are beautiful.
39:46It really is so luxurious and grand.
39:49We got to talk about this.
39:50Mr. David is our tile hero, and he's tried so hard to give you a backsplash.
39:56Third time's a charm.
39:56I hope so, Ben.
39:58The first time, the shipment never came.
40:00The second time, it came, and it was 60, 70% broken.
40:05So he just used what was not broken to just do this.
40:10We've ordered it a third time, and it has still not come in.
40:13Okay.
40:14But when it comes, he's gonna do your backsplash.
40:18Well, it looks really nice over here.
40:20Yeah.
40:20Yeah.
40:21Just think how pretty it'll be.
40:22You're gonna love it.
40:23I promise.
40:24This whole space is just so beautiful.
40:27Yeah.
40:27With the little arch.
40:28You've got your arch.
40:29It's just, I love it.
40:31I think it's perfect.
40:32The kitchen and the living room is where you're pulling your budgets together.
40:37That's where you see it.
40:38Yeah.
40:38Sure.
40:39Is in here.
40:40Also, I built a bookcase, more book storage.
40:44I think the bookcase looks awesome.
40:46It does look awesome.
40:47A lot of storage there.
40:48I love it there.
40:49It definitely adds something to the room.
40:50Let's go see what's out those doors, huh?
40:53Okay.
40:53We're going on an adventure.
40:55Oh, my goodness.
40:56Wow.
40:56Custom mahogany arch doors.
41:00Wow.
41:00The door's so nice.
41:02Sure am glad we had two budgets.
41:05We never get to have nice doors like that.
41:08This deck is huge.
41:10It really does look like a fairy tale.
41:12Yeah.
41:13It really does.
41:13It really does.
41:15I want a little fire pit.
41:17That fire pit's gonna get a lot of use.
41:19I love the color of the deck, too.
41:21I want you to notice how good the brickwork matching is.
41:25It looks amazing.
41:26It looks like it's always been there.
41:28Yes.
41:29Well, can you see yourself here?
41:31It really feels like home.
41:33Yeah.
41:34I will say, like, I am generally a picky person.
41:37It is exactly, it is so much better than anything I would have picked.
41:41Oh, I'm so glad.
41:41It's just, I'm so grateful.
41:44Let's talk numbers, because we doubled up here.
41:47So you got the house for $175,000, which is still a great deal.
41:49Way to go.
41:49Yeah.
41:50Yeah.
41:50Well done.
41:51The renovation budget was $150,000.
41:54So all in, that came out to $325,000.
41:58We talked about the floor rot.
41:59We had to dip into contingency $1,000.
42:02That was, you know, a check that y'all had already written,
42:04which brings the whole project to $326,000.
42:09For an awesome house with an incredible kitchen.
42:13In a dang bird sanctuary, it sounds like.
42:15They're going crazy.
42:16This is perfect.
42:17This was definitely the way to go.
42:18Yeah.
42:19I think it really feels like home.
42:20So what's the first goal of being Mississippians?
42:24I want to learn how to make local food.
42:26Ooh, love that.
42:27Oh.
42:27Get a library card.
42:29I love a library card.
42:30It's a good library.
42:31We're checking out butterflies, lizards, ladybugs, stuff like that.
42:34You can get other books, though.
42:35They have other things.
42:36Oh.
42:36Yeah.
42:37They even have books on tape.
42:39They sure do.
42:44This house is going to be different than anything we've ever done.
42:46I like funky.
42:47I want to do work in my own house.
42:50What all is she painting?
42:51All of this.
42:53What if it were, like, olive green?
42:55No.
42:56No?
42:57There's going to be people out there who see this,
42:59and they're going to be like, this is crazy.
43:00Erin, this was poor planning.
43:02Nothing like waiting until the last minute.
43:03Oh, my gosh.
