00:00Got a new project for us.
00:01Chance and his grandfather built his cabin.
00:03You guys have to come see it.
00:05Before we go out there and get excited,
00:07you have to let us surprise you.
00:10The vibe of this cabin is Ralph Lauren meets Hemingway.
00:15Ah!
00:16Mother!
00:16You OK?
00:17There's been a marital dispute.
00:18He might die on this hill.
00:21Good morning.
00:22Just another day of making our favorite small town better.
00:25Erin, we got to go, babe.
00:26Lucky girls.
00:27Y'all have fun.
00:28Ben, let's go.
00:28You believe we fixed up over 100 houses in Laurel?
00:31I don't know what's going to go wrong today.
00:33I'm sure something.
00:34Anytime we start a new house, we don't know how it's going to go.
00:36Girls, the bat just flew through here.
00:38That's not good.
00:40No way.
00:41They're about to see the house for the first time.
00:43This is the best part.
00:45Oh my god!
00:46Are you serious right now?
00:48This is perfect.
00:49Every day is different when you're
00:51renovating houses in Laurel, Mississippi.
01:04That fire looks good.
01:06Oh my gosh.
01:07The heat's not working in the truck.
01:09Oh my god.
01:10That's not good.
01:10What a terrible day for that.
01:12Used to work.
01:13How are you?
01:14Good.
01:14Probably when it was warm.
01:15Yeah, when you didn't need it.
01:17We've known Katie and Chance for eight years.
01:20Katie is a project manager.
01:22She also, I mean, she owns her own construction company,
01:24but she manages our projects from the TV side.
01:27Masterful at scheduling and logistics.
01:30What the hell?
01:32Chance also works in construction,
01:33so we've gotten to do a couple projects with them.
01:36Katie and I have worked together on over 100 houses.
01:40We collaborate constantly all day, every day.
01:42All right, we got some solution opportunities in here, guys.
01:44But this time, I'm the homeowner.
01:46And so there's some element of surprise to it, which I wanted.
01:50I mean, that was part of it, right?
01:53Yeah.
01:53I mean, I think I want it.
01:55Katie wants to be surprised.
01:56She says that.
01:57I don't know if she means that.
01:59Katie and her husband, Chance, and their kids
02:01live about 20 minutes outside of Laurel in Soso, Mississippi.
02:05They live on one side of Soso, and on the other side of town,
02:07they have family land and a farm along with this cabin.
02:11We have a family of three kids.
02:13Hagen was fixing to be 16.
02:15Our daughter, Hayes, that just turned nine.
02:18And then we adopted Knox.
02:20I've never met a kid that needed to live right out here in Soso in the country more than Knox
02:25did.
02:25So bad.
02:26Like, he is just, like, barefoot and wild and living the dream.
02:30Welcome to the cabin, guys.
02:32It's beautiful.
02:32I mean, for you, this is a special spot.
02:34We're like a family heirloom.
02:36Dude, you built this when you were 14?
02:38I helped my granddad build it.
02:39Do you need our help?
02:40I've got, like, 90 different ideas floating around in my head.
02:43Yeah.
02:44I can't just make a snap decision on what do we want.
02:46Are you at a point where you feel paralyzed by indecision?
02:49Yes.
02:50When you're designing for yourself, you second guess your decisions,
02:52and she wants someone to confirm her decisions with her.
02:56Chance's grandparents love to use this cabin for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
02:59Everybody would gather here since their health has gotten bad.
03:03We press pause on everything.
03:05Several years ago, my granddad came down with dementia.
03:07He's not able to be a part of this right now.
03:10I hope that we can at least get him there to see it because I think he'd be very proud.
03:14Our great-grandparents built a log cabin, and that's where we do Christmas.
03:18We have a big breakfast for supper at the cabin.
03:20My grandparents aren't there, but it's like you can feel them there.
03:23And you always will, even when you don't have your grandparents anymore.
03:26If this is still here, they still are.
03:29It's our little home away from home.
03:30It's not a big cabin.
03:32It's a little bitty guy.
03:33600 square feet.
03:34It's going to probably be like 750 or 800, but very small.
03:37Only one bedroom.
03:38One bedroom.
03:39And a loft.
03:40And a bathroom.
03:41It's a whole house.
03:42Well, how much are you wanting to really change about it?
03:45We're investing $50,000 into the cabin.
03:47As far as the exterior, like...
03:49We want to preserve it.
03:50Okay.
03:51And add a bit of our touch to it.
03:53You want moody.
03:54You know me.
03:55I like the moody colors.
03:56Like black?
03:57Maybe not black.
03:58Black pushes it more modern.
04:00It does.
04:00Green, brown, bronze.
04:02I really just want it to be so organic.
04:04Like, this just dives into the landscape.
04:06You'll need a new door.
04:08Something that's going to let more light in.
04:10And I think y'all are going to want a deck so you can have more outdoor space.
04:13You know we're outside people.
04:14And it would give us more room if we didn't have family gatherings here again.
04:17Maybe a contrasting stain for the deck.
04:19Are we thinking like a low deck?
04:20Super low, no railing.
04:22Cool.
04:22Yeah.
04:23Well, let's see the inside before we freeze.
04:25These are my favorite kind of projects.
04:28Family homes.
04:29They have memories here from a long time ago.
04:33And they want to create new memories here too.
04:35And I feel like that's really our specialty.
04:38Our specialty is creating home.
04:39Home already exists.
04:40No one is more sentimental than us.
04:43Hey, you asked if we need to fix something.
04:45We need to fix this.
04:46Oh, that was bad.
04:50This would be our giant dining space.
04:53So then everybody could eat together.
04:55Maybe a new table?
04:56Yeah, yeah.
04:56Much bigger table.
04:57Love these chairs.
04:59Would you want it to feel in dark or light?
05:01Dark could be cool.
05:02You want it to feel very like preppy hunting club, but not the cheesy kind.
05:07Yeah.
05:07Like Ralph Lauren and Ernest Hemingway had a love child.
05:11Okay.
05:12And this cabin was their love child.
05:14Okay.
05:15But there's one other thing.
05:16Less bag chair, more duck chair.
05:17Yes.
05:18Definitely.
05:18There is one thing I really want in here.
05:20An antler chandelier.
05:22In here?
05:23Maybe.
05:24Ceiling's kind of low.
05:26That's a big light fixture.
05:27It is.
05:27It would be super cool somewhere.
05:29We love the walls, and we want to keep them.
05:31All of these windows, those are secondhand used tempered door glasses at a storefront.
05:36My grandpa saved from the glass business.
05:38Nice.
05:39And do you want to keep that ball's glass?
05:41We think we probably need to change it.
05:43This was two pieces, but he used.
05:44Those were two tempered door glasses.
05:46Wow, there's silicone.
05:47Could you just frame my post here?
05:50I like that idea.
05:51We've got wood left over.
05:52And that would save some money, too, because that glass is expensive.
05:55Yes.
05:55But I want to show you all the big bin.
05:57It's unexpected.
05:58It's super cute.
06:00Dang.
06:01Whoa.
06:02Who's this guy?
06:08That's awesome.
06:09Yeah, we raised longhorn cows.
06:11That's Jethro, the bovine.
06:13He was a favorite.
06:14Yeah, it got old, and this became his home.
06:17That's awesome.
06:18It feels like there needs to be some kind of fire element.
06:21Like a potbelly stove.
06:22Maybe.
06:23There's a little loft space.
06:25Oh, yeah.
06:26And the kids love it.
06:27That was Papaw's.
06:28He wanted to do that for the grandkids.
06:29It needs to be updated, because it feels like jail bars.
06:32But also, you don't want it to just be open.
06:34It can't be, because Knox would jump.
06:36We'll be on the couch.
06:37But something's got to be done.
06:38We can chew on that.
06:40Okay.
06:44Ooh, this is pretty.
06:46Oh, that's cool.
06:47It's like a partner's desk.
06:49Chair drawers.
06:50I love that.
06:51My aunt and uncle gifted this to my grandparents.
06:53That's like your color inspo right there, I think.
06:56Yeah.
06:57I have a thought about what things could look like.
06:59But you need to stop us if a memory is getting deleted.
07:02Okay.
07:03That's important.
07:04I definitely want to keep the ladder.
07:06We took it in and out of here none less than 16 times.
07:09It had to be perfect.
07:11I want to understand the loft.
07:15Okay.
07:15Got a little closet at the end, and the carpet looks like it's never been touched.
07:21That's awesome.
07:22Yeah.
07:23This just feels, yeah, tight right here.
07:26You need a counter-depth fridge.
07:27Yeah.
07:28And maybe we put the fridge where the range is now.
07:30Okay, so let's just delete the upper cabinets and let the fridge stand alone.
07:35Cabinetry.
07:36I think light refresh.
07:37Yeah, we're not trying to spend a gazillion dollars over here.
07:40Then let's do some open wood shelving to the left of the window, and the sink stays where it is,
07:46but let it be dark.
07:47The kitchen should feel earthy.
07:50Very handcrafted cabin vibes, and I think we go with a darker color on the cabinets.
07:55Dark granite countertops, green tile backsplash, and if we're keeping the wood floors,
08:00maybe you could even afford some dark vintage looking appliances.
08:05Then you'll have your range on this side, and you'll have a little counter space here,
08:09a smaller work table in the middle.
08:11I'd love that.
08:12What is behind the lever doors here?
08:13That's the washing machine, hot water heater, and HVAC.
08:16So it's all the utilities.
08:18If you want to paint it, paint it.
08:19I'm not married to anything.
08:20And this is the only bathroom?
08:22Yeah.
08:22It's not real big, but it doesn't need to be.
08:24No, it's got everything you need.
08:25You definitely want tile on the shower.
08:27You gotta have a wallpaper bathroom.
08:28New lighting, new vanity, a lot of storage.
08:30This is a weekend house, so it doesn't have to have a lot of storage.
08:33I'm not having to think about where I'm going to put my hair tools, you know?
08:36I want it to be pretty.
08:38Mm-hmm.
08:38It doesn't have to be functional.
08:40Got it.
08:41I don't worry at all about making Katie happy, but I do want Chance to love it as much as
08:45she does.
08:46Katie will be involved until someone forces her to leave.
08:48I think that we can realistically expect to get her out of here once paint goes on.
08:54Maybe.
08:56To the bedroom.
08:58Okay, it's a little bit narrow.
09:01You really need to lose the door.
09:02Close off the door to the bedroom from the living room.
09:05And then the bed wouldn't be slammed against the wall.
09:08Mm-hmm.
09:08Right.
09:08I would, if we could, I would like to save the stain trim.
09:11I like it.
09:12I like the trim.
09:13I love the stain trim.
09:14Okay, the whole cabin is 50,000.
09:16That feels a little tight.
09:17I think that's like enough money for us to do all the cosmetic changes that we need
09:21to do because the structure's good.
09:23Yeah.
09:23We don't need a new roof.
09:24We don't need new windows.
09:25We're good otherwise.
09:26Okay.
09:26I think it's going to be good.
09:28Yep, it is.
09:29There is a time clock on this project because Mr. Sam and Ms. Dot aren't getting any younger.
09:34Mr. Sam has dementia.
09:36If he's going to enjoy this cabin again, it has to happen now.
09:41While the sun was shining, I never felt the need to make some hay.
09:48Hagen's in there working already.
09:50Oh, my gosh.
09:51Well, well, well, we got us a young back.
09:55Yeah.
09:55Hagen, how old are you now?
09:5715.
09:5715.
09:5815.
09:58Hey, he will be 16 next week.
10:01I can't even talk about that.
10:03He was Helen's age when we started working together.
10:05I know.
10:06This is crazy.
10:07And now he's Chance's age when Chance built this.
10:10Yeah, and now baby Chance is going to take it apart.
10:12So this is your cabin now, right?
10:13I was taking claim to it, so I told him.
10:15Yeah, I think Hagen has to participate in order for his generation to claim any stake in it.
10:20Well, and I mean, at 16, you should be able to do twice the work that we can't.
10:24All right.
10:24I don't know about that, but.
10:26All right.
10:26So Hagen's on the ceiling.
10:28That's right.
10:28It's your job.
10:29You get a lot of ceiling tiles.
10:30Oh, yeah.
10:31The cabinets are not going to be hard to take out.
10:39It's coming out.
10:41Good job.
10:42Dang.
10:45The ceiling is down.
10:46What else can I do?
10:47You can take out this p-trap under here.
10:49Oh, that sounds great.
10:50That's a good job.
10:50Right, Katie?
10:51Oh, yeah.
10:51Just keep your mouth closed when you open that up.
10:57I saw a splash on you.
10:59Oh, my gosh.
11:02I got it.
11:02He's already got it.
11:03Oh.
11:04It doesn't smell like anything.
11:05We were really hoping this was going to be like a moment for you,
11:07a learning moment.
11:08A gross moment.
11:09It's not.
11:09See, it's not.
11:10It's not.
11:10It didn't work.
11:11God.
11:12Do you want to talk about paint?
11:13Yes.
11:14With the island?
11:14She loves rich, dark color.
11:17She likes the preppy, classic, almost equestrian style of Ralph Lauren,
11:24but she also likes the adventurous, masculine style of, like, Ernest Hemingway's home.
11:29So what I wonder, how do you feel about something in the khaki world for the walls?
11:35Yeah, I like that a lot.
11:37How does that feel against the wood color that the trim will be?
11:40Nice.
11:40Warm cabin.
11:41Love it.
11:42Okay.
11:43What about the living room?
11:44There's been a marital dispute about the living room.
11:46Figured there would be.
11:47Chance doesn't care about anything.
11:48I don't know why he's chosen this to be the hill that he dies on.
11:52He might die on this hill because I want to do something crazy.
11:56Take a breath.
11:59I want to paint this room black.
12:01Black?
12:02Black?
12:02Black?
12:02Yes, black.
12:03And leave the trim natural wood.
12:06Love that.
12:07She wants to leave it tan because it's always been tan.
12:12But she know I really like dramatic color.
12:14Okay.
12:14I painted the boys rooms in our house almost black and it's not as dark as you would think.
12:19My dining room's almost black.
12:20Uh-huh.
12:22This is okay.
12:23Totally.
12:24It's just how dark.
12:25I think all the way.
12:27All the way?
12:28I'm going to full send this room.
12:34Will Chance be mad?
12:36Yes.
12:37Well, what if he sees it and he hates it?
12:40I'm going to tell him it was your idea.
12:42It was a terrible plan.
12:43But if he loves it, this was my idea fully.
12:45100% your idea.
12:47Fine.
12:47I'll paint it black.
12:49Don't be afraid that I won't paint it black.
12:51I'm not scared either.
12:53Fine, let's do it then.
12:57Hold up.
12:58Is there someone walking, riding a horse?
13:02Is that Chance?
13:07He didn't say he was going to be riding a horse, but I am way more excited now.
13:13Ali, look, we're watching a western right now.
13:15That's like the final scene.
13:17Everybody else died, but he made it.
13:19He saved the town.
13:20We're the townspeople.
13:22Thank you!
13:23Behold, a pale rider.
13:27And hell followed with him.
13:29Didn't know I was going to get dinner and a show today.
13:32Chance Hinton?
13:34That's a good cowboy name.
13:35And the name of the movie is Taking Chances.
13:40Hey, Chance.
13:41Hey, guys.
13:42What's going on?
13:42You want me to put the park breakdown on that thing for you?
13:45This is the honcho.
13:47The head honcho?
13:48I reckon you can call him, Matt.
13:50How old is honcho?
13:51Fifteen.
13:52My goodness.
13:54Babysitter.
13:55Transportation.
13:58You're ready to start building the deck.
13:59Correct.
14:00Okay.
14:00Okay.
14:00But I want to see about making a change.
14:02Okay.
14:03Okay.
14:03But I want to see about adding two foot to the deck because I want to try to put in
14:07a hot
14:07tub and surprise cake.
14:09Dang.
14:09I think she will love that because she's told me before it would help with Hayes'
14:13physical therapy, right?
14:14Exactly.
14:14That would be so great.
14:16Two years ago, Hayes got really sick.
14:20Hayes had a massive stroke when she was born.
14:22So we've been battling cerebral palsy and seizures and the medication she was on was causing extreme
14:28physical changes to the point that she couldn't walk anymore.
14:31And Hayes started losing her memory.
14:34So we really had no option but to pursue brain surgery.
14:38The good news is we're on the back side of that now.
14:41And Hayes is happy and healthy and the surgery worked.
14:45Thank God the surgery worked.
14:47And so we use this land all the time.
14:50It's been a huge part of her recovery.
14:51Since we got home from surgery, she walks that trail every day.
14:55Yep.
14:58My brother said if you're building a deck, figure out how big you want and then add two feet.
15:0510 down here.
15:06That's plenty.
15:08Comfortable enough?
15:09I'm in the hot tub.
15:10I'm at a patio table having dinner.
15:12And that's the corner?
15:13Uh-huh.
15:14That feels like a lot of living space out here.
15:16I'm really bad at keeping secrets from Katie.
15:19When we got engaged, it was burning a hole in my pocket.
15:22I proposed to her in my truck in a movie theater parking lot.
15:27It worked.
15:56Do you know how Katie and Chance met?
15:58She finds out about it.
15:59I'm going to try to keep this one secret till the end.
16:01Okay.
16:01Good luck with that.
16:02No, he's not going to make it.
16:04But it's a good goal to have.
16:07Is the name of this movie, it's No Chance in Hell.
16:11Thank y'all for coming back.
16:12Heck yeah, man.
16:14Everybody tried to warn me when I got into town.
16:17I tried to keep my distance.
16:19You've been hanging with the house.
16:29Live it, live it, live it, fracker.
16:31That looks great.
16:31Like, moving the stove over here is going to be so much better.
16:34Instead of slamming everything on that side.
16:39No one has to get the step stool.
16:40You're so dangerous.
16:41Ah!
16:42You okay?
16:44Woo!
16:45You okay?
16:46Yeah.
16:47We don't want that.
16:48It really walloped you.
16:49Yeah.
16:50It's like having an orange on a Tuesday, you know what I'm saying?
16:53Huh?
16:53I mean, like having a Monday on a Saturday.
16:56Yeah.
16:57I think we'll go to the doctor after that.
16:59I want to talk about the base cabinets here.
17:02They're in great shape.
17:03We're just going to paint them anyway.
17:05When you order the doors and drawers for the new cabinets,
17:08can you also measure these in order for those?
17:11Because we're just going to use these boxes to save a little money.
17:13We paint that out.
17:14We'll never know that they're not new.
17:16We do this a lot and...
17:18Anytime they're in a good placement, you can use them.
17:22I'm kind of nervous about the vanity.
17:24I'm afraid it's going to be too big for the bathroom.
17:27It's just going to be very tight once there's a toilet,
17:29because you got to think about the toilet will come out to about here.
17:32Hey, Mr. Gregg.
17:34I'm coming.
17:35I think it's too big.
17:36I got a solution.
17:37You do?
17:38Yeah.
17:39This leg, where it's sitting right here,
17:41just pretend it's sitting right here.
17:42Would that be enough?
17:43We'd lose this drawer stock.
17:45Yes.
17:46Yeah.
17:46I like that.
17:48Yeah.
17:48That would be enough.
17:49It'll make the room more comfortable.
17:51And they don't need that much storage, right?
17:53No, she said within probably an hour and a half,
17:56it'd be completely redone.
17:57You know, it ain't going to be no big deal.
17:59We love working with you because you're always so flexible.
18:02We have to pivot a lot.
18:03Thank you for being able to pivot.
18:05We just didn't think about the placement of the toilet
18:07and how tight that would be.
18:10It's pretty simple though.
18:11He's just going to cut off a bank of drawers.
18:13Okay.
18:13Now, can you help me problem solve something else?
18:16What are we doing about the spindle holes?
18:18Well, she hates the spindles.
18:20It needs to be updated because it feels like jail bars.
18:23So imagine vertical slats turn on a slight angle.
18:28So let's run it all the way across.
18:30So it accents the top of the gate.
18:32It would look super cool.
18:34We're just on a real tight budget.
18:37If I had my wish, I would want it to be old windows
18:40that lets the light in.
18:42It would look so good and it would be a terrible idea.
18:44Because Knox would just like kick them out.
18:46He's a rough and tumble boy.
18:48What would hold them in good?
18:49What about like tree branches?
18:51Really sturdy.
18:52Fence posts make it look like a gate.
18:55I don't know what to do.
18:57What do we need to be thinking on?
18:58I've been worrying about it.
19:05I will be gentle.
19:07I'm so antler ignorant.
19:09I know that deer shed them.
19:12But some of these aren't deer.
19:14That looks moosey.
19:15So that's a fallow deer.
19:16It's a trick antler.
19:18These antlers are what I build into antler chandeliers.
19:22Yeah.
19:22You only use shed antlers, which is basically like
19:26when your teeth fall out in first grade.
19:28Kind of what it is.
19:29So they basically fall off every year naturally.
19:32And then they get picked up in the forest.
19:33So no animals were harmed in anything that I build.
19:36How long have you been doing this?
19:38I bought a lamp in 2008 and my life changed forever.
19:41And it was a very tedious process of learning, self-learning, self-teaching.
19:45Okay.
19:46And now I'm at this point where I can build absolutely anything you can dream of.
19:49What I see in my mind's eye is sort of pill-shaped.
19:53It almost looks like a canoe.
19:54Yes.
19:54Got it.
19:55We can build them elongated.
19:56We can build them flat.
19:57We can put lights wherever we want.
19:59Obviously, it's so organic.
20:01It's so natural.
20:03And I also want it to feel a little bit modern.
20:05I want it to almost be like it's suspended in air.
20:08And this is obviously a pretty masculine light fixture.
20:11But I want to think about how can we make it feel a little more feminine.
20:16So I would love the antlers to be as light as you can.
20:19So I won't pick the darkest antlers that I have.
20:22The dinner table is 10 feet long.
20:24A functional kind of statement piece over the table.
20:27So what if you went like six foot on the length, 34 wide?
20:32I just wouldn't want it to hit anyone in the face when they're coming to the table.
20:36So I'm dreaming of a white-tailed deer chandelier.
20:40And we can do an elongated piece.
20:42We scrap all the hardware on top.
20:44So now we have just an antler chandelier of lights on every antler.
20:48And then we can build these candlesticks into them.
20:51And I build these candles out of epoxy.
20:53It looks just like a piece of antler.
20:55You'd never know the difference.
20:56So then you'd have the ambiance of that sitting over this 10-foot hand-built table.
21:03And you could put it on a dimmer switch to make it glow.
21:05Just like the antlers themselves are glowing.
21:08I love that.
21:09I want to be surprised.
21:10You don't want to help build it?
21:12No.
21:12I'll see it when it's finished.
21:14Okay.
21:14I trust.
21:18So where will the wire come in?
21:19So it's going to come from the ceiling.
21:21And then it's going to literally weave through the whole chandelier, man.
21:24Just hang on.
21:29There it is.
21:30There it is.
21:30Tad gum.
21:32That's crazy.
21:37All right.
21:37Two down.
21:3823 to go.
21:49Good morning.
21:50Good morning, Erin.
21:51How are you?
21:52Good.
21:52Look at this.
21:54The sheet vinyl looks like real towel.
21:56Looks good to me.
21:57It's a great little budget illusion.
21:58I love that.
21:59Are you about to get started on the shower?
22:01Yeah, we need to talk about that, I guess.
22:04What design we're going to use.
22:06Ooh.
22:06Now, I've been working with Katie for five years.
22:09I know her pretty well.
22:10What do you think she wants?
22:11I know what she wants.
22:12I did two showers in her house.
22:14Yeah.
22:14We did her bathroom on a vertical stack.
22:17And they loved it.
22:19Sure do.
22:20That's what they want here, too.
22:21Let's do a vertical stack.
22:22All right.
22:24We're seeing color going up on the walls.
22:26Both the colors have this mossy earthen darkness.
22:30Very in tune with that masculinity, but it feels refined.
22:38Hey, this looks awesome.
22:39Right?
22:40Yeah.
22:41Just using grandpa's glass saved so much money.
22:43It looks like you got new glass, but you just covered the same.
22:46Yes.
22:47Katie and Chance were thinking that they were going to have to take out
22:49the glass, build new framing, get new glass.
22:52No says I.
22:53Key grandpa's glass.
22:55Just cover the crack.
22:57Yeah, you just cover your crack.
22:58It's a modesty board.
23:00Gosh.
23:02Erin.
23:03Can you come here and look at this with me?
23:05Oh, what is that?
23:06Come see.
23:10Since we are getting dangerously close to finishing this room, it's black.
23:16I don't know if Chance knows, but Katie does.
23:18This is what she wants.
23:19It'll look real good.
23:20But we got to resolve the spindle holes.
23:23Just seeing it right now, I think it's a really nice addition to all the dark.
23:27The black, the brown, and then a little bit of brass.
23:31It feels like a really nice kind of glamorous finish.
23:35Is this it?
23:37Sometimes indecision is worse than the wrong decision.
23:41Yeah.
23:42And at this point, we're running out of time.
23:44So the right decision is decorative metal.
23:47Do we have a deal?
23:50Gotcha.
23:51Got yourself a deal.
23:58I got three different stains to try for the exterior, because I'm just not sure exactly
24:03which vibe you like best.
24:05So Katie's back.
24:07Well, because we got to choose a color for the exterior.
24:09I can't.
24:09I don't want to just like go rogue and pick what I think that she would love.
24:12When this is something she can have input on.
24:14It's a lot of it.
24:15And it's all solid stained.
24:17And that's, uh, it was supposed to be more charcoal, but it's very navy.
24:21Got a gray hue to it.
24:23And then this is the very dark moss on rock green.
24:27That's so pretty.
24:28It is.
24:28I mean, it just makes the house disappear into the landscape.
24:31And I think, you know, it'll get a little darker when it dries.
24:34All right, let's see this guy.
24:37Very blue.
24:38It is very blue.
24:39Well, I like it, but not for this.
24:41Do you want to see this light one?
24:43Just in case.
24:45Not what we're going for.
24:46Just disappear.
24:47It's the color of the wood.
24:48If we go this color for the body, then it would be a nice contrast for the deck.
24:53Like this one?
24:54Yeah.
24:54Just something like it.
24:55Do you like the deck?
24:56The deck is the best part.
24:58So I'm just going to sit in a chair and look out over this landscape on the woods.
25:04Has Chance mentioned anything about furniture or anything out here on this deck?
25:07No.
25:08You know he didn't care about that.
25:09He made the executive decision to make it 10 feet instead of eight.
25:13Love it.
25:13Has Chance spilled the beans yet?
25:15It doesn't sound like he said anything.
25:17One other thing while you're here.
25:19What do you think about this fireplace for the inside?
25:23Because I've found a good deal on this wood-burning stove.
25:26It's used.
25:27Well, a new one is $3,500.
25:29This one's $1,500.
25:30That helps your budget.
25:32If you save a little money, you can do something kind of fancy somewhere else.
25:35I love that.
25:37Yeah?
25:37Right?
25:37That feels funky.
25:38It is funky.
25:39And very much the vibe.
25:41And it will be in the living room between these two windows.
25:43Love that.
25:44Love this.
25:45Love my deck.
25:46But look at where it's drying, how much darker it is.
25:48It's so perfect here.
25:49Right there.
25:50Okay, I'm going to talk to the painters.
25:51Okay.
25:51I'll walk them through the very simple paint plan.
25:54I understand the urgency.
25:56She feels like she's waited so long and has been frozen on what to do with this.
25:59And when you see your grandparents' health failing, it makes you realize we don't have forever.
26:20Today, we're building a table.
26:22I like it.
26:23Looks good.
26:23What I'm thinking is building a sort of trellis, A-frame table.
26:28Our ends will look like this.
26:31Real simple.
26:32Yes, sir.
26:32I'm going to teach Hagen today.
26:34And so I'm actually going to let him do the majority of the work here.
26:45Looks good.
26:46As soon as Hagen told me that the H is the brand for their cattle company, I texted Chance and
26:53said,
26:53can I borrow your branding iron?
26:58Let's get that.
26:59Whoa, that is cool.
27:01That's how something becomes an heirloom.
27:04That's freaking awesome.
27:06That was pretty cool.
27:13The bathroom is going to be very earthy.
27:15We're going to have plaid wallpaper and this kind of earthy brown clay color tile on the shower walls.
27:21It's going to be elegant.
27:24It looks so, so good.
27:26I'm going to peel it.
27:28Katie said she wanted wallpaper.
27:29It for real feels like fabric.
27:32And it looks great about us that you can clean it.
27:34Yes.
27:34It's tough.
27:35I just unboxed one of the sconces outside because the brass picks up the lighter color in here.
27:41It does.
27:41And it just kind of feminizes a very masculine room and color palette.
27:47Do you need any help or are you good?
27:48I think I'm going to make it down to the end.
27:50You did it now.
27:51All right.
27:55This looks gorgeous.
27:57I love it.
27:57The black is great.
28:00But the exciting thing is that we have really expensive stone for the vanity top in the bathroom.
28:04Their budget is small, but the cabin is small too.
28:07So I think when we save money on things like a used wood burning stove,
28:12we can afford to spend a little more in other places, be a little bit more luxurious.
28:18When you do stone countertops, you have to buy an entire slab,
28:20no matter how much of it you use.
28:22And a lot of times you can't use the entire slab and what's left is a remnant.
28:26We love remnants.
28:27A slab would have cost us like $2,000, but this was just $400.
28:32But we have had them fashion it such that it looks like a six inch thick slab of stone.
28:39I'm amazed.
28:41You would never know that this isn't a huge rock.
28:44One piece.
28:45You can't see the seam where these three pieces meet.
28:48That's cool, huh?
28:49They cut these at 45 degree angles, epoxy these together, then polish them off,
28:54and it gives it that effect.
28:55I feel like we have gamed the system twice now, because this is remnant,
28:59and we made it look like it's a huge rock.
29:02Really thick.
29:03It's such a cool trick.
29:14So for Katie and Chance's bedroom, we wanted an upholstered headboard that had a pattern,
29:21color, something interesting.
29:23Knock, knock.
29:23Hey, come on in.
29:25Your junk pile's growing.
29:26It's out the front door.
29:28It's not all junk.
29:29There's a few good things in there.
29:30Probably lots of good things.
29:31You are the upholstery expert in my world.
29:35And here's the thing.
29:36I thought about an upholstered bed for this bedroom, but then when you shop for an upholstered bed,
29:41it's always just like oatmeal.
29:43Cookie cutter.
29:44Or you can have gray.
29:45But what if you want it to be thinking at rattlesnake pattern?
29:49Elegant rattlesnake.
29:50I see the rattlesnake in that.
29:52Just as a comparison.
29:54I don't want it to be close to me.
29:55Did you skin a rattlesnake?
29:57When you're a weird person, people bring you weird things.
30:00The bedroom doesn't have a lot going on.
30:02So this upholstered headboard moment is going to be the interesting thing in the room.
30:07Is this what you're actually putting it on though?
30:09It's got holes in it.
30:10It does have holes in it on purpose.
30:12Big piece of plywood.
30:14It weighs too much.
30:15We just took weight off of it.
30:16Yeah.
30:17We're going to weave this.
30:18We're going to put the foam on it.
30:20We're going to cover it.
30:20You'll never know.
30:21It just will weigh less.
30:23This is really going to act like wallpaper.
30:26Because it is covering the entire width of the room.
30:29Yeah, it's really like an accent wall.
30:31Katie's going to be tickled about this.
30:32We're doing a lot of unusual things.
30:34Ben did an antler chandelier with a guy from the Pacific Northwest.
30:38I want to know what that guy's like.
30:40Super cool.
30:41That's good.
30:42He has a good mustache.
30:42Oh, I don't have that.
30:44You have good glasses.
30:45And you got that.
30:46You got Caesar's brains.
30:47I can't carry that with me around to make friends.
30:51I love it.
30:58The antler chandelier has arrived.
31:00My only concern is it's pretty heavy.
31:03It's not like heavy for us to pick up, but it's 60 pounds.
31:06The crate's 250.
31:07Well, as long as we ain't hanging the crate, we're doing good.
31:11This is like Indiana Jones vibes right now.
31:16Oh, wow.
31:20Isn't that rad?
31:21That is cool.
31:22It's real antlers, white-tailed deer.
31:24It's so solid.
31:25Solid bone.
31:31All right, last one.
31:33These are not lightweight, y'all.
31:36Do one at a time.
31:37Yeah.
31:38These aren't wire mesh.
31:40No, they're not.
31:41You want to know why?
31:42That was going to be $2,000 for one sheet.
31:45Real crazy expensive.
31:47This was just a quarter of the price.
31:49It was $500.
31:50This achieves, I think, a similar look, but it's just CNC wood panels.
31:55Painted gold.
31:56You like that?
31:57I think it's great.
31:57It keeps Knox safe.
31:59It lets air flow.
32:00It feels like we've done the same thing for way less money.
32:02I'm going to check on Clayton.
32:04All right.
32:05Clayton is a seamster, but he only does home decor,
32:08and he helps us with curtains.
32:09I choose fabrics.
32:10He sews the curtains.
32:11He does the pinch pleats.
32:12Okay.
32:15Do you love them?
32:16This is so much better than the little louvered doors that were here.
32:21Yeah.
32:21And I didn't have a good budget-efficient way to replace them.
32:26Easy fix.
32:27Yes.
32:27Absolutely.
32:28Is it too feminine, though, you think?
32:29I definitely think the black and white keeps it pretty masculine,
32:32while the floral motif definitely adds a little feminine flair.
32:35They just need a little softness somewhere.
32:37This is a man's cabin, but it's Katie's cabin, too.
32:41Exactly.
32:42These are Katie's stores.
32:43They're Katie's stores.
32:44I just love them.
32:45Maybe my favorite thing in the whole house.
32:48Of course.
32:48I love them.
32:58So we've got a hot tub train going on, a truck pulling a trailer with a hot tub on it,
33:04being followed by a tractor that's going to pick the hot tub up.
33:07We're at the end, and this is it.
33:09Everything's in place and ready to receive the huge heavy things like appliances and light fixtures and hot tubs.
33:15Does Katie know about it?
33:17She does not.
33:18Okay.
33:18I'm kind of surprised.
33:19He's not good at keeping secrets.
33:21I know.
33:21No, I've got it here without saying a word.
33:23No, we just got to get it there without breaking it.
33:27So we just need to get it off the trailer, down closer to the ground, so we can slide it
33:33in our opening.
33:34I am touching over here.
33:38All right.
33:41Oh, all right, Dad, you want to get in?
33:44Come on, Chance.
33:46Three grown men are over capacity.
33:48Yeah.
33:48Oh, man, where's the water?
33:52Holy moly.
33:53Oh, here we go.
33:54This is cozy.
34:05Everything about this cabin is just shadowy in a really good, sleepy, mysterious, woodsy sort of way.
34:13And that's really what Katie wanted.
34:15She wanted everything to have more depth, more darkness, and it all needed to feel so organic.
34:22That's her favorite word when talking about this house.
34:25I think we're somewhere in the world of Ralph Lauren meets Ernest Hemingway.
34:30She did trust me to make choices without her, and that was the fun that I got to have.
34:36It feels very custom.
34:38It's outdoorsy.
34:39It's elegant.
34:41Not things you expect to find in a tiny little cabin in the woods.
34:44It already was an heirloom because Chance and his grandfather built this.
34:49But now it's an important family heirloom that everyone is going to love and enjoy and make great memories.
34:57Y'all, this has been one of our most exciting projects.
35:01Welcome to the Hinton cabin.
35:10It's like very different from where we left.
35:14For sure.
35:14It's very finished.
35:15It turned out really good.
35:16Thank y'all so much.
35:17This is exactly what I wanted it to look like.
35:21The color, the porch, and the little stepping stones.
35:25I know, they look so good.
35:27Uh-huh.
35:27And the plant life, Japanese maples.
35:29Amazing what landscaping does.
35:31Oh, they're so good.
35:32I can't believe the color changed it this much.
35:35Yeah.
35:35It really did.
35:36Because I really did just want it to be so organic and just to like die into this hill.
35:42Well, I believe that has happened.
35:43The color is just a shadowy color that feels mossy.
35:46And the asymmetry of it and the landscaping, I think all together, achieves the organic thing you were looking for.
35:54It does.
35:54My favorite part is the divider that we added.
35:57On the weird window.
35:58Oh, where the joints were steamed.
36:00Mm-hmm.
36:00I hated that scene.
36:01I cannot wait for your grandparents to see this.
36:04I know.
36:04They're going to freak out.
36:06Definitely.
36:06I had a surprise over here on the left.
36:09See what?
36:09I added a surprise.
36:11Okay.
36:15What?
36:18What the heck?
36:20Chance, how in the world?
36:22It was kind of complicated.
36:24You said you had to go get it at night.
36:25Yeah.
36:26Hagen even kept it a secret.
36:27Yeah, and Hagen knows.
36:28He helped us put it in.
36:30It's been challenging to surprise you with anything.
36:34I am dying to get inside.
36:36Do you want to walk in there?
36:37I'm ready.
36:42Look at that.
36:47Look how good that door opens.
36:49It don't even drag on the floor.
36:53I love it.
36:55Hello, our antler chandelier.
36:57That's all you wanted.
36:58That's all I wanted.
36:58I have tried so hard to keep this hidden from you.
37:01These are whitetail antler sheds.
37:05I love it.
37:06And I love the table.
37:07So Hagen and I built this.
37:09It's cypress.
37:10I am, like, so proud.
37:11That's pretty cool.
37:12By the way, incredible help.
37:14Oh, yeah.
37:14He's well-trained.
37:17This is a Thanksgiving table.
37:19I know.
37:19Y'all know this is what we wanted.
37:20It is so perfect.
37:24The whole goal of this place was a spot for us to come together.
37:27I want people to be able to sit and fellowship.
37:30Because it's sometimes the only time we get to be together.
37:32Yeah.
37:33And I really, really love this brand.
37:37The duck chairs had to stay.
37:38My favorite thing in the room.
37:40Love the duck chairs.
37:41This is perfect.
37:44You and your grandpa built a hunt hangout shack.
37:48Yep.
37:48His whole intention was to, like, have gatherings here.
37:51And this is the first time that that's even been possible.
37:53It's the Hinton Community Center.
37:55I'm ready to see more.
37:56Yep.
37:56I'm, like, on a high right now.
38:01Yes.
38:02It really looks so good.
38:04Are you OK with the wall color?
38:06Yeah.
38:06You like it?
38:07Yeah.
38:07You really do?
38:08I do.
38:09I was pretty nervous about it.
38:11If you'd have told me, I probably wouldn't have loved it.
38:13But it made the trim pop.
38:15Like, it's still the same cabin.
38:17It's just in its next life.
38:19I really like it.
38:19Yes.
38:20The stair looks so good against the black walls.
38:22He's right, right there.
38:24I can't remember what we named him.
38:25It's got to be a more elevated name now.
38:27He's a fancy cow.
38:28His name is, like, Charles II now or something.
38:31I hope you like how we handled the loft.
38:34Oh, wow.
38:35After 1,000 different ideas.
38:38Oh, my gosh.
38:39That's perfect.
38:40Like, number one was, knock, snap, jump out of the wall.
38:43Number two was, does it look good?
38:45The grid disappears against the wall color up there,
38:48which I think is kind of nice.
38:49Yeah.
38:49Oh, man.
38:51There's so much to look at in here.
38:52And it feels like just a good family hangout spot,
38:55where you can always see everybody,
38:57even if you're not connected.
38:58The fireplace is looking so good.
39:02It's good.
39:02It's all so good.
39:04There is one surprise I think you have not seen at all,
39:07and it hits different with the appliances.
39:10Look how cool.
39:11I know.
39:12I love it.
39:13Isn't that great?
39:14That's what Clayton did, that I wanted to keep a surprise.
39:16That looks a ton better.
39:18Cut out the louvers and put in upholstery that I thought
39:22was a little softer, a little more feminine,
39:24because everything is deeply masculine.
39:26The knobs match the upholstery, just so you're aware.
39:29Yeah.
39:29There is so much texture and layers,
39:33and like the vintage appliances.
39:35It's all very me.
39:36The bathroom is my favorite room,
39:39and people just don't expect it to be great
39:41in a little cabin like this.
39:45Oh, my gosh.
39:49It's real good.
39:51It even looks more roomy.
39:52It does look more roomy, and the window makes it.
39:56Yep.
39:56It's like the outside's coming in.
39:57It feels like it's open air.
39:59It's so clear.
39:59It just gives a lot of natural light.
40:01And this spillover edge is just perfect.
40:05This bathroom transports you.
40:07I feel like we're in a high-end lodge.
40:10It's a vacation bathroom, for sure.
40:12Yeah, it is.
40:13It's a vacation bathroom.
40:14Five stars.
40:15Definitely.
40:16You know, I love a wallpapered bathroom.
40:18Yeah, you do.
40:18So much texture, again, everywhere.
40:20I wanted the plaid to really have its moment in here.
40:24And then the bedroom has a different pattern.
40:29Oh, my gosh.
40:30Oh, wow.
40:31Oh, this is so cool.
40:32Yeah.
40:32I love the headboard.
40:33I know.
40:34It's like a whole wall panel.
40:36The fabric is like a modern snakeskin
40:38that's a little southwestern.
40:39Oh, man.
40:41You just forget that there was a door there.
40:42Yeah.
40:43Feeling that door to the living room is necessary.
40:45It made it way more roomy.
40:46And so custom.
40:48Oh, it's custom.
40:49Matt Fondren did it.
40:50I love all these people that are like, you know,
40:52we were around all the time that got to be a part of us.
40:55This, like, seals the deal on this being like a resort house.
40:58Yeah.
40:59It's real good.
41:01I mean, I feel like I'm on vacation.
41:03Yeah.
41:04Right now.
41:06I feel like I'm on vacation.
41:07Are you happy?
41:08I love it.
41:09Oh, yeah.
41:09It was perfect.
41:11Everything.
41:11I mean, I couldn't imagine it any better.
41:13All right.
41:14Well, you gave us $50,000 to work with.
41:17It's a vacation house.
41:19More importantly, it's finished.
41:21It's so done.
41:22Every room.
41:23And a surprise.
41:24We're going to use the heck out of this place.
41:27Everybody can, which is what my granddad wanted.
41:29And it took 24 years for that to happen.
41:32It's better late than never.
41:33I'm glad it's finally here to be used for what it was intended on.
41:36Thank y'all so much.
41:37Great night.
41:39I like the table.
41:41You did this.
41:42I did.
41:43Y'all did good.
41:48Okay.
41:49What do you think Pavel would think?
41:51I bet you'll like it.
41:52Yeah.
41:53I do, too.
41:56It's like your own little special place.
42:03All right.
42:04We'll see you later, then.
