As Malaysia’s youth continue to play a larger role in the nation’s political landscape, a local professor has launched a new book that seeks to better understand what drives their engagement in real life.

Authored by Prof Datuk Dr Monna Ong Siew Siew, the book, titled “Engaging a Generation: Voting Intention and Political Participation Among Malaysian Millennials”, was launched recently at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT).

00:04My deepest gratitude goes to Tan Sri-Chan Gong Choi.
00:09Beyond title and roles, he has been a mentor in the true sense.
00:14From you, I have learned the knowledge must not remain confined to theory,
00:21but must find its ways into practice, into society, into the lived reality of people.
00:28Your guidance has shaped not only how I think, but how I see the world,
00:34with greater clarity, responsibility and purpose.
00:39I am profoundly indebted to my supervisors, Prof. Dr. Ananda, Dr. Rose and Dr. Esty.
00:48Their guidance, patience and quiet belief in this work carried me through moments of uncertainty.
00:54They did not simply guide a thesis, they nurtured a journey.
01:00To our distinguished expert reviewer, Prof. Dr. Danny, Prof. Dr. Ananda and Shariu,
01:08thank you.
01:09Your willingness to engage with this work, to challenge it, to refine it and to expand its possibilities
01:17is a gift that will continue to shape its impact well beyond today.
01:23And finally, I would like to express my deeper gratitude to University of Malaya Press.
01:28You have given this work a voice beyond the confines of a thesis,
01:33allowing it to reach a wider audience and to take its place within the broader academic and public discourse.
01:40It is truly an honor to share with you a work that began as a doctoral research journey
01:47and has now taken shape as a published book.
01:50This study explores a question that is both academic and deeply relevant to our society.
02:00How do Malaysians, millennials understand participation and what truly shapes their engagement in public life?
02:11Within the Malaysian context, however, this issue is more complex.
02:16Rather than assuming disengagement, this study identifies a critical gap.
02:22We still lack a clear, evidence-based understanding of what truly shapes young people's intentions to participate.
02:32This leads to the central research questions.
02:35What truly inferences Malaysians' millennials' political participation?
02:41These findings carry implications.
02:44What we often interpret as in disengagement may actually be selective engagement.
02:53Young people are not absent.
02:55They are choosing when and how to participate.
02:59This means that trust cannot be assumed.
03:02It must be built.
03:03And relevance is critical.
03:05People engage when issues resonate with their lived realities.
03:12So, ladies and gentlemen, in conclusions, young Malaysians are engaging in ways that may not always be visible within traditional
03:22framework.
03:23They are more independent in thought, more selective in actions, and more driven by meaning than by pressures.
03:32So, perhaps the real question is not, why are they not participating, but rather, are we creating systems that they
03:41believe are worth participating in?
03:44Second, there are political parties to be bringing today.
03:46So, let me begin.
