00:06of their family. A man has been charged with the murder of a five-year-old girl in Alice
00:12Springs, along with two other offences. The girl, now known as Kuminjai Little Baby, disappeared
00:18from the old-timers Aboriginal town camp last week, triggering a massive search. Our reporter
00:24Courtney Barrett-Peters joins me now from Darwin with more. Hi there Courtney. So police
00:29have addressed the media earlier this morning. What did they have to say? Mel, it was never
00:36a matter of if police were going to charge 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis, but only a matter of time.
00:41And yesterday afternoon they did exactly that, charging Mr Lewis with one count of murder and
00:46two other offences. These charges of course do come one week on since five-year-old Kuminjai
00:53Little Baby disappeared from the old-timers Aboriginal town camp in Alice Springs. Now Mr
00:58Lewis remains in Darwin after he was evacuated on Thursday night following his arrest. That
01:04development of course did spark widespread violence on the local streets of Alice Springs,
01:09so he remains here for his own personal safety and he will remain in custody until he faces court
01:14later this week. Police do say that this development is the result of an extensive and complex investigation.
01:21This remains a deeply distressing matter and our thoughts are firmly with Kuminjai's family, loved
01:29ones and the wider community that have been deeply impacted by these events.
