Man charged over death of infant in NSW Riverina

In July 2023, detectives attached to State Crime Command’s Child Abuse Squad established Strike Force Wighton to investigate the suspicious death of a four-week-old baby boy.

00:00In July 2023, the New South Wales Police State Crime Command Child Abuse Squad commenced

00:11investigations following the presentation of a four-week-old baby boy to Wagga Wagga

00:16Base Hospital.

00:18At the time, the boy was suffering a critical illness as well as non-accidental inflicted

00:27injuries.

00:30The infant was transferred to the Sydney Children's Hospital but passed away three days later

00:35on the 31st of July 2023.

00:39Strikeforce Whiten was established to investigate and investigations have been ongoing ever since.

00:46The Strikeforce was assisted by the New South Wales Crime Commission who employed some of

00:51their statutory powers to assist.

00:55Today at 10am, a 26-year-old Wagga Wagga man was arrested in Albury and taken to Albury

01:01Police Station where he is now in custody.

01:05Strikeforce investigators will attempt to talk to that man about the death of the child.

01:10I'd like to reassure all communities across New South Wales, the Child Abuse Squad works

01:17extremely hard to investigate the most horrific crimes against children.

01:22Those crimes include sexual abuse, serious physical assaults and extreme cases of neglect.

01:28We have 235 detectives spread across 19 regional and metropolitan areas.

01:35Those police are very dedicated, hard-working.
