00:19Moscow is one of the safest towns, not only in Idaho, but probably in the United States.
00:26And where else can you go?
00:27And there's a moose walking on campus.
00:29It is absolutely breathtaking.
00:32It's just a little college town.
00:34You got just what they need for all the kids who are going to school there.
00:37That's where I found my best friends.
00:42Our group was pure happiness.
00:44When our friend group was together, that was our world.
00:47We were all like, this is it.
00:49This is all we need.
00:53These kids looked like they were just having the best time of their lives.
00:59Nobody ever could have imagined what was about to happen.
01:04Four college students were killed early Sunday morning.
01:07Their bodies found in an off-campus house near the University of Idaho.
01:12From the moment that I walked up the stairs, I knew something truly tragic had happened.
01:18To live in the little town of Moscow, Idaho, you think nothing's going to go wrong.
01:21And then suddenly the whole entire world knows where Moscow, Idaho is.
01:27You're just stretching your imagination.
01:29Why they would hurt these children.
01:31Why they would hurt my child.
01:34That was the most scared I've ever been in my life.
01:36It could have been anybody in Moscow.
01:38It just didn't make any sense who would do this.
01:42Is it possible that the killer was acting out of some kind of hatred of women?
01:47Rumors are rampant about how these students died.
01:50We were getting death threats.
01:52They're our best friends.
01:54Who's to say that's not going to happen to us?
01:57The attack was targeted with a, quote, edged weapon.
02:03I do want the story out there.
02:07The right story.
02:10The question everybody wants answered is why?
02:15Why these four kids?
02:45To be continued...
02:51dropping Maddie off freshman year
02:53at the University of Idaho.
02:58As we just even parked for the orientation,
03:02just waiting in line,
03:03like moms were hugging their daughters,
03:04and I had to look away
03:06because every time I saw that,
03:08I just wanted to ugly cry.
03:11She was so excited,
03:13and I'm just trying to keep it together.
03:19I absolutely always knew
03:21that I wanted to be a mom.
03:24I was a very young mother.
03:25I was 22.
03:28So I was always so protective of Madison,
03:32this beautiful, peaceful little girl.
03:38I'd never let Maddie cry.
03:42Like, never.
03:45I always made sure that she was comfortable
03:47the whole thing about
03:48you don't like the bassinet?
03:49All right.
03:51Come sleep in our bed.
03:52You don't like the crib?
03:53I'm not going to fight this.
03:55I'm not going to let you have
03:56a moment of sadness.
04:02When I met Maddie,
04:04she was three years old.
04:07No, she was just a character.
04:12Maddie was Karen's mini-me.
04:15They looked alike,
04:16and they acted alike and everything.
04:20Maddie was a flower girl
04:21at our wedding.
04:23For a long time,
04:24she just called me Scotty,
04:26and then when she got older,
04:29she ran into some of her friends.
04:32And she goes,
04:34no, this is my dad.
04:35And that felt really good,
04:39hearing that.
04:41It just made me feel so proud
04:43to be called dad.
04:48One day in 6th grade,
04:50Maddie says,
04:51I want to go stay
04:52at my new friend's house.
04:54Her name is Kaylee.
04:55And I was like,
04:57all right, well,
04:59I want to go meet
05:00the family first.
05:03I met the
05:04Gonsalves family,
05:05Chrissy and Steve,
05:06and we headed off
05:07with them too.
05:08And at that point on,
05:10I was like,
05:10all right,
05:11I know this is going to be
05:12a great union.
05:14I know this is going to be,
05:15I trust the family.
05:18Maddie and Kaylee,
05:19they were inseparable.
05:20You'd listen to them,
05:21and you'd think
05:22they were sisters.
05:25Kaylee's a powerhouse.
05:26She'd be going 90 miles an hour,
05:28and Maddie would just
05:29sit back and listen,
05:31and then say,
05:32like, two words,
05:33and Kaylee'd get all
05:34fired up again.
05:36So Maddie's always been
05:37the quiet one.
05:39They played off each other
05:40perfectly.
05:42Our teacher's gone.
05:44We're just sitting here,
05:45chilling.
05:48I love Lexi.
05:49Is this her phone?
05:50Yes.
05:51Oh, here's my teacher.
05:55From sixth grade on,
05:56there was hardly a moment
05:58that it wasn't Kaylee
05:59and Maddie.
05:59They were both applying
06:00to the same colleges
06:02because they were never
06:03going to leave each other.
06:05That wasn't going to happen.
06:06I love you.
06:08I love you.
06:11They decided they were going
06:12to the University of Idaho.
06:14The girls are just
06:16excited as can be.
06:18And we were so excited
06:20for Maddie and Kaylee
06:21to start this new chapter
06:22of their lives.
06:25It just felt like
06:27I knew that Maddie
06:29would be safe here.
06:33At that time,
06:34the girls were much more
06:35about the sorority life
06:36than the academics.
06:38Say you need a couple
06:39credits for they'll
06:40let you out of college.
06:42I bet you bought that beer
06:44with your daddy's car.
06:46They had their minds set
06:48on what college experience
06:50they wanted to have.
06:52We can take a different route.
06:53I know you're from
06:54a different town.
06:55Kaylee and I became
06:57members of Alpha Phi.
06:58We became pledged sisters.
07:01Kaylee always played pranks.
07:03One time she had
07:06glued her top lip
07:08with nail glue
07:08up to her nose
07:10and she thought it would be
07:11the funniest thing
07:12to prank.
07:13Her boyfriend at the time
07:14saying her lip filler
07:16went wrong.
07:19She did lots.
07:21She would do things
07:21all the time.
07:22Kaylee Gonsalves,
07:24special agent.
07:24I'm with the FBI.
07:25Do you have a second?
07:27And then she'd be like,
07:28just kidding.
07:30I mean, that was her
07:31happiness right there.
07:34Maddie was one of the
07:35first people to ever
07:37make me feel included
07:38at University of Idaho.
07:40She was one of the cool
07:41girls that was older
07:43and she was pretty
07:44and super funny.
07:45My Patrick,
07:47don't you mind?
07:50Me and Maddie
07:51were in Pi Beta Phi.
07:52We were kind of
07:54the older girls.
07:56We were so happy
07:58that we found each other
07:59and we knew
08:00we were going to be
08:01best friends forever.
08:04And we just kind of
08:06took Emily
08:07and Santa
08:08under our wing.
08:10I'm a Barbie
08:13cowgirl.
08:14What do you have to say
08:14about it?
08:15Yeehaw!
08:16Zanna,
08:17she was a wild child.
08:19She could make friends
08:20with everyone.
08:21She didn't know a stranger.
08:23After moving in,
08:25we all had to go sit
08:26on the lawn
08:26and everybody had to
08:27stand up
08:28and say who you were.
08:31A girl stood up
08:32and said,
08:33Hi, my name's Zanna.
08:35It's like Xanax,
08:36but without the X.
08:37She was the only name
08:38that I remembered.
08:43We were hip-to-hip
08:44through and through,
08:45like all the way
08:46throughout.
08:48I'm alright.
08:49Nope.
08:51She didn't wear makeup,
08:52so she didn't care
08:53about looks really.
08:59We would all wear
09:00sweatshirts out
09:01to parties.
09:02It was just very much
09:03like we didn't care,
09:05but we did.
09:09She looked like
09:10a monkey, dude.
09:12Watch this.
09:16One of the fraternities,
09:18Sigma Chi,
09:19had just rushed
09:19a new group of freshmen.
09:21People were like,
09:22oh my God,
09:22there's two really hot twins
09:24that are joining Sigma Chi.
09:26I was like,
09:26okay, I want to meet them.
09:28First day that I met
09:30Ethan and Hunter,
09:32seeing these two
09:33big 6'4",
09:35goofy twins coming out,
09:38took about 30 seconds
09:39before we were all
09:40laughing hysterically
09:42and just felt like
09:44a perfect match.
09:45Alrighty.
09:46My name is Ethan Chapin.
09:48I'm a freshman.
09:49I'm from Mount Vernon,
09:50Washington.
09:51What I have to learn
09:52in this class is just,
09:54I don't know,
09:54just really interesting
09:55because it is part of my
09:57career path and major
09:58and all that,
09:59so just ready to get going.
10:03I mean, we were triplets.
10:05Me and Ethan
10:05and Maisie.
10:08Ethan, with his personality,
10:10I'd say it was like
10:10almost magnetic.
10:12He was a natural leader
10:13in that way.
10:15And I was perfectly fine
10:16being the follower
10:17because he'd always
10:18have something fun to do
10:19and we'd always go
10:20and do it.
10:21Ethan was definitely
10:21like the leader.
10:23Like I would go to him
10:23and Hunter would go to him.
10:27We were always together.
10:29There was never a time
10:31longer than a 12-hour period
10:33where we were separated.
10:36We were raised
10:37very centered around family.
10:39So we were friends
10:40with everyone,
10:41but we were best friends
10:43with each other.
10:46Our kids are IVF.
10:47They're true test tube babies.
10:50So you go through
10:51that whole process.
10:52So we were at the doctor.
10:55and, you know,
10:55I had to do an ultrasound
10:56to see if I was pregnant.
11:00He started scanning
11:02Stace's belly
11:03and one,
11:05and there was another one,
11:07and then there was
11:08the third one.
11:10So Jim died
11:11and I was like,
11:13okay, well, you know.
11:15I don't know.
11:16I had a moment, honestly,
11:17I had a moment
11:17where I was like,
11:18okay, I guess this is
11:20now our life.
11:25I was standing
11:26in the kitchen
11:26and, you know,
11:27my water broke,
11:29but it was actually
11:29like Ethan's foot.
11:30He was at the bottom.
11:33So Ethan got tired
11:34of those living conditions.
11:36I mean,
11:37I don't want to call him
11:37the dominant triplet,
11:38but he just,
11:39he just had a big personality.
11:45I don't know.
11:46He just made you laugh.
11:55As a parent,
11:56what a great thing
11:57to have our kids
11:57at the same school.
11:59What a great thing
12:00for your three kids
12:01to still be spending time together.
12:06Throughout college,
12:07we had this group of friends
12:09that we hung out with
12:11almost every day of the week.
12:16This is actually King Street
12:18where I've lived
12:19the past two years
12:20and I really like
12:21just hanging out
12:23with my friends
12:23all the time.
12:25King Street
12:26is a very iconic place.
12:28It's known as
12:29the party place.
12:33I met Zanna
12:34my junior year,
12:36her sophomore year.
12:38I had Zanna
12:39on Snapchat
12:41and I saw her location
12:43on King Street.
12:44I texted her and I said,
12:46oh my gosh,
12:47I'm your new neighbor.
12:48I actually just signed a lease
12:49right across the street.
12:50Here's where I'm living.
12:52We'd always hang out
12:53with everyone
12:53at the King Road house,
12:55which is less than
12:56a block away from our house,
12:58like a 30-second walk.
13:00I just called
13:01Zanna's house.
13:02The friend group
13:03came over all the time
13:04to Zanna's house.
13:06Maddie and Kaylee
13:07lived on the top floor,
13:09Dylan and Zanna
13:10in the middle
13:10and then Bethany
13:11was in the basement.
13:16I knew Bethany and Dylan
13:18from Pi-Fi really well.
13:20Dylan is Emily's little
13:22and in sorority terms
13:24that means like
13:25a little sister.
13:29We would just sit together,
13:30talk and like hang out
13:32and literally play country music.
13:47Yeah.
13:54Ethan, look at me.
13:55Smile.
13:57Ethan and Zanna,
13:58everybody else knew
14:00they liked each other
14:01before they did.
14:03Ethan and Zanna
14:05were hanging out
14:06constantly.
14:09I was so eager for it,
14:12mainly because
14:13I liked Ethan so much.
14:18Me and Hunter
14:19had been dating
14:19and Hunter and Ethan
14:21were becoming best friends.
14:24We were all hanging out
14:25us four more.
14:27We just all knew
14:28it was different
14:29with Ethan and Zanna.
14:31They are like
14:32the same exact person,
14:34just a boy and a girl.
14:35Like,
14:37you get the vibe
14:38of Ethan walking
14:38into a room
14:39and everyone lightens up.
14:41You got the same
14:41exact thing from Zanna.
14:44This was a great
14:46thing for Zanna.
14:48It was great
14:48for Ethan, too.
14:57Parents' Weekend,
14:58November 5th and 6th.
15:00That was 2022.
15:03It was the kid's
15:04second year.
15:05of college.
15:06And it was
15:07the most amazing weekend.
15:09We could tell
15:10that Ethan was serious
15:11with Zanna.
15:13It was so fun.
15:15You could just see
15:16where they were
15:16starting to adult.
15:18And for Stace and I,
15:20that was huge for us.
15:25We left Sunday morning
15:27and literally
15:28as we were driving
15:28out of town,
15:29Jim and I,
15:29and I mean this,
15:31we literally
15:32high-fived each other.
15:33We were like,
15:34we've done it.
15:34we've done it.
15:37We're good.
15:40And that's such
15:41a huge satisfaction
15:42as a parent,
15:44you feel.
15:51And then to have it
15:52taken away
15:54in seven days,
15:56it was very short-lived.
16:01You're supposed to raise
16:01your kids
16:02so that they
16:03fly.
16:04And we had literally
16:06had a week of that.
16:09One week.
16:33It started off like
16:34any normal day.
16:35I had something
16:37over at
16:38Emily's apartment.
16:41I mean,
16:42we got
16:43a call.
16:46I didn't
16:47really think
16:48much of it.
16:53Dylan had called us.
16:58she and Zanna,
16:59they were roommates.
17:02And she was like,
17:03something weird
17:04happened last night.
17:06I don't really know
17:09if I was dreaming
17:10or not,
17:11but I'm really scared.
17:13Can you come check
17:13out the house?
17:16She was like,
17:17I'm in the basement
17:17with Bethany.
17:19She said,
17:20I called for Zanna
17:21a few times
17:22and she hasn't
17:23responded,
17:23but we just
17:25come over.
17:26I was like,
17:27oh,
17:27sure,
17:28should I bring
17:28my pepper spray?
17:31Not thinking
17:32anything of it.
17:35I lived with
17:35Emily at the time
17:37and then I remember
17:38her being like,
17:38oh,
17:39yeah,
17:39let's go to Zanna's.
17:41Dylan wants us
17:41to come over.
17:42She's called us
17:43before and been like,
17:44oh,
17:44I'm scared.
17:44Can you bring
17:45your boyfriends over?
17:46But like,
17:46not like,
17:47it was never
17:48anything serious.
17:48Like,
17:48it was just like
17:49a pan fell.
17:50Like,
17:51actually nothing
17:51because it's Moscow.
17:53Then we were like,
17:54oh,
17:54yeah,
17:54we'll just go over
17:55and Hunter
17:56and he'll just
17:58check it out.
17:59I don't think
18:00I've ever locked
18:01a single door
18:01in Moscow.
18:04When Dylan
18:04had called,
18:06I didn't think
18:06it was urgent.
18:08So I started
18:09walking to Zanna's
18:10house and
18:12when we got there,
18:14Dylan and Bethany
18:14had exited
18:15the house.
18:17They frightened,
18:19just kind of like,
18:21just hands
18:22on their mouth,
18:23like,
18:24I don't know
18:25what's going on
18:25type thing.
18:29When I was going
18:30up the stairs,
18:30Hunter Johnson
18:31was already
18:31in the house.
18:33we were just
18:33a bit behind.
18:41As soon as I
18:42stepped in the house,
18:42I was like,
18:43oh,
18:43something is so
18:43not right.
18:44Like,
18:45you could feel it
18:46almost.
18:50The stairs are
18:51immediately when you
18:52walk in the door
18:52to the left.
18:54Then you walk
18:54upstairs
18:56and there's
18:56the living room.
19:01And then
19:01all the way
19:02down the hall
19:03is Zanna's room.
19:07Hunter was
19:07ahead of me
19:08and Emily.
19:11I set foot
19:12in the house
19:13and immediately
19:13was pushed out
19:15and Hunter was like,
19:16get out,
19:17somebody call 911.
19:20Yeah.
19:23Hunter had
19:24enough courage
19:26to tell them
19:28to call the police
19:31for not a real reason.
19:33He worded it
19:34very nicely.
19:36He said,
19:36tell them
19:36there's an
19:36unconscious person.
19:41Hunter saved
19:42all of us
19:43extreme trauma
19:44by not letting
19:47us know
19:50anything.
19:55Dylan was
19:55the one
19:56that was
19:56on the phone
19:57with 911
19:58and I had
19:58to take
19:58the phone
19:59from her
19:59because she
19:59was so
20:00completely
20:01hysterical.
20:03They're like,
20:04what's the address?
20:04What's the address?
20:05What's the address?
20:05I was like,
20:061122 King
20:07and she was like,
20:08well,
20:08what happened?
20:09I was like,
20:09I don't know.
20:11And then
20:13I think
20:14that's when
20:14Hunter was like,
20:16they didn't have,
20:16he just like
20:17looked at me
20:17and he was like
20:18shaking his head.
20:18He was like,
20:18they didn't have a pulse.
20:20And I mean,
20:20even when he said
20:21they had no pulse,
20:23I still was like,
20:23oh,
20:24the paramedics
20:24are going to come
20:25and like revive them.
20:31And then
20:31the cops came
20:32and I saw
20:36all the paramedics
20:37like carrying
20:37the bags
20:38but they never
20:39actually went
20:40up the stairs
20:41or inside
20:41at all.
20:45I woke up
20:46at about 12 o'clock
20:47to my Sigma Chi
20:48brother
20:49at the edge
20:50of my bed
20:50shaking me.
20:52He's like,
20:54Hunter,
20:54you got to
20:54wake up.
20:55There's cops
20:56on King Street.
20:57I was like,
20:57what do you mean?
20:58He's like,
20:59there's cops
20:59right in front
20:59of the King house.
21:01It's like,
21:02okay,
21:03that's probably
21:04normal.
21:05There's more
21:06noise complaints
21:06there than
21:08anywhere else
21:09on campus.
21:12And my brother,
21:14Ethan,
21:14basically lived
21:15at the King Road
21:16house
21:16with Xana.
21:24At 12 o'clock,
21:25I look outside
21:26of my window,
21:27which faces
21:301122 King Road.
21:31and I see
21:33my friends
21:34standing outside.
21:36Hunter,
21:37Emily,
21:38the police
21:40were starting
21:40to put the
21:41caution tape up.
21:42And that's
21:43when I knew
21:44something really
21:46bad
21:46happened.
21:50And I
21:51ran outside
21:52and the first
21:52person I grabbed
21:53was Emily
21:54and she was
21:55crying.
21:57And
21:58Dylan
21:59made a comment
22:01of,
22:02I can't believe
22:04somebody would
22:04do this.
22:05And
22:07I
22:08whispered to
22:09Emily,
22:11where's
22:12Xana?
22:14And
22:15she said
22:16she's
22:18inside.
22:23And I
22:24think she's
22:24dead.
22:26I
22:27think all
22:27I wanted
22:27was to
22:28go wake
22:28Xana up.
22:31And I
22:32knew it
22:32wasn't
22:32going to
22:33happen.
22:39So I
22:40was walking
22:40over to
22:41the King
22:41Road house.
22:43I saw a
22:44group of
22:44people sitting
22:45on the
22:45ground.
22:45And it's
22:46all the
22:46people I've
22:47been hanging
22:47out with.
22:50And they
22:50all just
22:51had this
22:51look in
22:52their face
22:52when I
22:53walked up
22:53like the
22:55world had
22:56ended.
22:59I remember
23:00seeing Hunter
23:02walking up
23:03and I
23:04remember us
23:04all turning
23:05and being
23:05like, oh
23:05my God,
23:06like somebody's
23:06going to
23:06have to
23:07tell him
23:07what just
23:08happened.
23:09I'm like,
23:10what the
23:10hell's going
23:11on?
23:11Like, where's
23:12Ethan?
23:13And they're
23:13like, Ethan's
23:14not here
23:14anymore.
23:17What do
23:18you mean
23:18Ethan's not
23:19here anymore?
23:19I was like,
23:20where'd he
23:21go?
23:23And they're
23:23like, your
23:24brother's
23:25dead.
23:28It was
23:29like, that
23:30can't be
23:30true.
23:40And then
23:40Hunter
23:41Johnson was
23:42like, I
23:44think Zanna
23:45and Ethan
23:46were murdered
23:47last night.
23:51didn't even
23:52know how to
23:52respond to
23:53it because
23:54it's like
23:54so unreal
23:55that someone
23:55I'd spent
23:56almost every
23:57minute of
23:57my life
23:58with, I
24:00don't even
24:01know, just
24:01time.
24:13The first
24:14person I
24:14called was
24:15Maisie.
24:20Literally
24:21all Hunter
24:21said was
24:22you just
24:22need to
24:22come to
24:22Zanna's.
24:24And I
24:25asked him
24:25why and
24:26he was
24:26like, just
24:26come.
24:27Don't ask
24:27any
24:28questions,
24:28have
24:29someone
24:29drop
24:29you
24:29off.
24:32I remember
24:33sitting in
24:33the car
24:35feeling
24:36like,
24:37oh my God,
24:37I'm in the car.
24:41I was like,
24:42feeling like
24:42something was
24:43wrong.
24:44It was weird.
24:49I just
24:50knew.
24:59I was at
25:00the grocery
25:00store.
25:03I'd run
25:05into a
25:05friend and
25:05we were
25:06standing having
25:06a short
25:08little, you
25:08know, hello
25:09conversation.
25:10And my phone
25:11started to
25:11ring and it
25:12was, it
25:15was Hunter's
25:15voice.
25:17He just
25:18said, Ethan's
25:18not here.
25:19That's what
25:20he said.
25:21He goes, Ethan's
25:22not here.
25:23And I'm like,
25:23well, go get
25:24him.
25:25And he just
25:25kept repeating
25:26it like,
25:26they're not,
25:27no, you
25:27don't understand
25:27what I'm
25:28telling you,
25:28mom, they're
25:29not here.
25:30Ethan and
25:31Zanna are
25:32not here.
25:32And I'm
25:33like, well,
25:34go and
25:34get them.
25:36Like, I
25:36couldn't face
25:37the fact that
25:37he was
25:38dead.
25:40He's like,
25:40no, he's,
25:41I think he
25:41said to me,
25:42he goes, mom,
25:42you don't
25:43understand, they're
25:43not on this
25:44earth anymore,
25:44I believe is
25:45what he said
25:46to me.
25:48I didn't
25:49believe it.
25:54I didn't
25:55cry, I
25:56didn't, I
25:56just left my
25:57cart and
25:58walked out
25:58of the
25:59grocery store
25:59and I
26:00got in the
26:01car and I
26:01was driving
26:01down the
26:02road and I
26:02called Jim.
26:07She said
26:08Ethan was
26:08killed.
26:13and I
26:15wasn't
26:16sure what
26:18I heard.
26:19I go,
26:21what?
26:22Yeah,
26:23something
26:23happened to
26:23Ethan and
26:24he's been
26:25killed.
26:29So we
26:31packed some
26:32clothes and
26:33we jumped in
26:33the car and
26:34drove to
26:35Moscow.
26:48so we're
26:49sitting on the
26:50driveway, the
26:51cops were not
26:52speaking to us
26:53at all.
26:55I don't even
26:55think they were
26:56looking at us.
26:58None of the
26:59cops would talk
27:00to us and we
27:02were like, should
27:02we ask them a
27:03question?
27:03like, what
27:04the fuck
27:05just happened?
27:06I feel like
27:07they should talk
27:07to us because
27:08we're the
27:08people sitting
27:09outside.
27:11We sat
27:11there for so
27:12long with no
27:13information.
27:15It just was
27:15like, why are
27:17we sitting?
27:19Everybody kind
27:20of gets that
27:21communication that
27:22Ethan and
27:22Zanna are
27:23not, are
27:25not alive.
27:26Then it
27:27finally clicked.
27:28Oh my
27:29gosh, where's
27:31Kaylee and
27:31Maddie?
27:33Their phones
27:33are pinging
27:34in there.
27:34Their phones
27:35are inside
27:35that house.
27:37We didn't
27:37know if
27:38they were
27:38home.
27:38We didn't
27:39know if
27:39they were
27:40in there.
27:40We didn't
27:41know anything.
27:41We couldn't
27:42get a hold
27:42of them.
27:50I was
27:51sitting next
27:51to Dylan
27:52and she
27:52really wanted
27:53to find out
27:53where they
27:53were and
27:54we never
27:55went up
27:55there.
28:12We got
28:13very
28:13frustrated
28:14with the
28:15police.
28:19We're like,
28:20you can't
28:20tell us
28:20anything.
28:31word spread
28:31so fast
28:32in Moscow.
28:34Everybody
28:34on King
28:35had their
28:35windows open
28:35and were
28:36peeking
28:36through the
28:36blinds
28:37because they
28:37saw all
28:38the cop
28:38cars and
28:39the caution
28:39tape up
28:40by then.
28:47My phone
28:48rings and
28:50it's
28:50Maddie's
28:50boyfriend,
28:51Jake.
28:54and my
28:55heart
28:55kind of
28:55stopped
28:56for a
28:56second
28:57and he
28:58said,
28:58Karen,
28:59do you
28:59know what's
29:00going on
29:00in Moscow
29:01right now?
29:03And I
29:04was like,
29:04I have no
29:05idea.
29:06So he
29:07said,
29:07there's been
29:07a homicide
29:08at Maddie's
29:08house.
29:10We think
29:10Zanna's
29:11dead.
29:13And my
29:14heart just
29:14sank.
29:18I called
29:19Maddie and
29:19Kaylee and
29:21there was
29:22no answer.
29:23So I
29:24called the
29:24Moscow
29:25Police
29:25Department
29:25and they
29:26were like,
29:27well,
29:27we can't
29:28really tell
29:28you anything.
29:30And Scott
29:31kind of
29:31downplayed it.
29:32He's like,
29:32you know,
29:33it's probably
29:34something so
29:35blown out of
29:36proportion kind
29:37of thing.
29:38I go,
29:38let's just go
29:39down and have
29:40lunch with
29:40her.
29:40We'll go
29:41and pick
29:41her up and
29:42we'll see
29:44what's going
29:44on.
29:53We got
29:53in the
29:54car,
29:54we got
29:55gas,
29:55and we
29:56headed down
29:56to Moscow.
29:58I called
29:59the police
29:59department
30:00again and
30:01I said,
30:01I know you
30:02can't tell
30:02me anything,
30:03but can
30:04you confirm
30:04that there's
30:04an active
30:05homicide
30:05investigation
30:06at 1122
30:07King Road?
30:09And she
30:09said yes.
30:14it was on
30:15speaker so
30:16that Scott
30:16could hear
30:16like this
30:18is real.
30:18Whatever this
30:19is, it's
30:20real.
30:21The whole
30:22time, my
30:24mindset was
30:25that we were
30:26going to go
30:26pick up
30:26Maddie and
30:28Kaylee and
30:29bring them
30:29home and
30:30console them
30:31and hug
30:32them and
30:33figure out
30:34just what
30:36happened.
30:38My stomach
30:39dropped.
30:40I didn't know
30:41what to think.
30:42I saw the
30:43ambulances,
30:44cops.
30:45So the
30:46cops still
30:46not speaking
30:47to us.
30:47And then
30:53all of our
30:54phones go
30:54off and
30:55there's an
30:56alert that
30:56says homicide
30:58on King
30:58Road.
31:00Everyone
31:01simultaneously
31:02just started
31:03bursting into
31:03tears.
31:05We all get
31:06the first
31:07Vandal alert,
31:08which is like
31:08Amber alert,
31:09but for just
31:10University of
31:11Idaho students.
31:12Investigating
31:13a homicide
31:13on King
31:14Road.
31:15It didn't
31:15say how
31:16many.
31:16It didn't
31:17say who.
31:17say who.
31:21Homicide
31:21being
31:22investigated.
31:26Where's
31:27Kaylee and
31:28Maddie?
31:31We got
31:32another
31:33Vandal alert.
31:35Four students
31:36found dead.
31:37Quadruple
31:38murder.
31:39And we
31:40look at the
31:40text and
31:41we're all
31:41like,
31:41what the
31:41what?
31:43Because
31:43nobody had
31:44said anything
31:44to us.
31:45That was
31:46before the
31:47cops even
31:48told us
31:49that
31:50Maddie and
31:50Kaylee had
31:51passed and
31:51that they
31:52were in
31:52there.
31:54I don't
31:54even know
31:54if I
31:55looked at
31:55my phone
31:55or if
31:55somebody
31:56showed me.
31:57But people,
31:58they weren't
31:58like,
31:58some of the
31:59girls started
31:59like,
31:59yelling at
32:00the police
32:00guys.
32:01I show
32:02my phone,
32:02I go,
32:03what the fuck
32:03is this?
32:04And he
32:04just looked
32:05at me,
32:05he goes,
32:06he grabs
32:07my phone
32:07and he's
32:07like,
32:07I didn't
32:08even know
32:08they were
32:09saying this,
32:09I'm so
32:10sorry.
32:10And we
32:10were like,
32:11well,
32:11what does
32:11this mean?
32:12He was
32:12like,
32:12all four of
32:13them.
32:16And at
32:17that moment,
32:18I think it's
32:19when everything
32:20kind of became
32:21real.
32:24And I was
32:24like,
32:24oh my God,
32:29what's going
32:30on?
32:33What
32:34happened
32:34inside of
32:34that house?
32:38I was
32:39texting Emily
32:40asking what's
32:41going on and
32:43I was
32:44informed by
32:45her that
32:46Hunter went
32:47into Zanna's
32:48room and
32:49found them
32:50with wounds,
32:53a lot of
32:54blood and
32:55this looked
32:56and felt
32:57like an
32:58attack,
32:59a malicious,
32:59you know,
33:00attack.
33:02Who would
33:03do that?
33:04Like,
33:04there's literally
33:05nobody that
33:06disliked them.
33:16They asked
33:17us all to come
33:17to the police
33:18station.
33:19I'd never
33:19been to the
33:20police station,
33:20so I didn't
33:21realize what
33:21was going
33:21to happen.
33:23They took
33:24just one
33:24by one
33:26in an area
33:27with a
33:28single cop.
33:31They would
33:31ask me
33:32normal things
33:32like,
33:33what were you
33:34doing the
33:34day before?
33:35Do you know
33:36of anyone
33:36who might
33:37want to do
33:37things like
33:37this?
33:40But I don't
33:41know anyone
33:41who would
33:42ever want
33:42to do that.
33:47what happened?
33:48What did
33:49you see?
33:52They were
33:53trying to
33:53clear us,
33:54mostly,
33:55I'm assuming.
34:00So we got
34:01to the police
34:02department.
34:03I remember
34:04running up
34:04the stairs
34:04and just
34:05trying to
34:05find anyone
34:06to talk,
34:06like,
34:07anyone
34:07to just
34:12anyone.
34:14And finally
34:15they put
34:17us in a
34:18little room
34:20and they
34:20came into
34:21the back
34:21door and
34:22kind of
34:22opened this
34:23file and
34:24the officer
34:25kind of
34:25explained,
34:27there has
34:28been a
34:28homicide in
34:30your daughter's
34:30house and
34:32there are
34:32four victims.
34:34and
34:35instantly
34:35we were
34:36like,
34:36what?
34:38It just
34:39made no
34:39sense.
34:42And he
34:43said,
34:44Maddie was
34:45a victim.
34:48And then
34:50I said,
34:50what about
34:51Kaylee?
34:51He said,
34:52Kaylee was
34:53also a
34:54victim.
34:59I just
35:00remember
35:00just being
35:01so angry,
35:02I was
35:03like,
35:05this can't
35:06be true.
35:07I mean,
35:09this is
35:09Idaho.
35:10I mean,
35:11things like
35:12this,
35:14you see it
35:14on TV,
35:15you know,
35:18East Coast
35:18or something
35:19like that.
35:21And then
35:21we found
35:22out about
35:22the other
35:22two.
35:23And it's
35:23like,
35:25what is
35:25going on
35:26here?
35:26This is
35:26ridiculous.
35:27This is
35:27unbelievable.
35:28It's like,
35:29no.
35:35they couldn't
35:36tell us
35:36anything.
35:37They had
35:37no details.
35:41So our
35:42minds were
35:42just circling
35:46what could
35:47have happened
35:47here.
35:49What
35:50possibly
35:50happened in
35:51the house?
35:54they were
35:54still
35:55working
35:56the scene
35:58and
35:59they
35:59couldn't
35:59let us
36:00near it
36:00or
36:02we
36:02couldn't
36:02see
36:03anybody
36:04here.
36:05The girls
36:05are just
36:07like,
36:07oh,
36:08we're like,
36:09what are we
36:10supposed to
36:10do?
36:12I remember
36:13sitting in
36:13the parking
36:14lot with
36:15the Moscow
36:15police and
36:17as we were
36:17just barely
36:18getting in
36:18the car,
36:19I said to
36:20Scott,
36:22there was
36:22nothing we
36:23could have
36:23done.
36:25There was
36:25nothing we
36:26could have
36:26done.
36:30These are
36:31your own
36:31kids going
36:33off to
36:33college,
36:33you know,
36:34and they're
36:34supposed to
36:34be safe
36:35and having
36:36a good
36:36time,
36:38you know,
36:38getting the
36:39education.
36:41Something like
36:41this isn't
36:42supposed to
36:42happen.
36:49I've been
36:50here in
36:50Moscow on
36:51scene since
36:52about 3 p.m.
36:53Since I've
36:54been here,
36:54I've watched
36:55Moscow police
36:55cars come in
36:57and out of
36:57this neighborhood
36:58where officials
36:59found four
37:00people dead.
37:01Moscow police
37:01say they
37:02responded to
37:02a call here
37:03on King
37:03Road for
37:04an unconscious
37:05individual.
37:06This is
37:06very much
37:07a developing
37:07situation and
37:09we will
37:09continue to
37:09stay on
37:10the grounds
37:10until we
37:11have more
37:11information
37:12to report
37:12back to
37:13you.
37:17We drove
37:18to Moscow.
37:21We got
37:21there, I
37:22think it
37:22was like
37:229 o'clock
37:23at night.
37:25We drove
37:26to the
37:27jail and
37:30we sat
37:31down with
37:32the police
37:32and they
37:33told us
37:33what had
37:33happened.
37:35At that
37:36point, I
37:36don't think
37:37anybody even
37:37knew the
37:37extent of
37:39anything.
37:42There
37:42was just
37:43these four
37:44incredible
37:44college kids.
37:46We just
37:46knew they
37:47were gone.
37:48The
37:49university
37:49had rented
37:51a block
37:52of rooms.
37:55After the
37:55police department,
37:56we took each
37:57of the kids
37:57and they
37:57picked up
37:58a couple
37:58of things
37:58and we
37:59had to go
38:00sleep in
38:00this hotel
38:00room together.
38:04We were
38:04just sitting
38:05in the
38:05sliding doors
38:07of a hotel
38:07lobby, just
38:08crying, like
38:10out loud.
38:15We had an
38:16adjoining room
38:16and Maze and
38:17Hunt were in
38:17there, but we
38:18all wound up
38:18just laying
38:19together.
38:22You know,
38:22there's not a
38:22lot you can,
38:23what do you
38:23talk about in
38:24that moment?
38:28I thought the
38:28kids were kind
38:29of in the same
38:29state of mind
38:30as Stace
38:30and I
38:30were.
38:32They really
38:33were like,
38:34what has
38:35just happened
38:35here?
38:37What has
38:37happened to
38:38our family?
38:39What happened
38:39to Ethan?
38:42I remember
38:43I didn't
38:44sleep.
38:46I mean,
38:46I don't think
38:47any of us
38:47slept for
38:49days.
38:52The
38:53university
38:53said that
38:54we are putting
38:55people who
38:56were closely
38:56affected in
38:57a hotel room
38:58for the night
38:58to get you
38:59off King
39:00Street.
39:00I mean,
39:01I said,
39:01okay,
39:01yeah,
39:01like,
39:02we don't
39:03feel safe
39:03here.
39:03Honestly,
39:04we don't
39:04feel safe
39:04anywhere.
39:06Emily and
39:07Hunter were
39:07there,
39:08Josie,
39:09Dylan,
39:10Bethany.
39:11That's when
39:12I first
39:12really cried.
39:13It was
39:13right there.
39:14I mean,
39:14I just
39:15explained to
39:15my mom,
39:16I was like,
39:16I don't
39:17know what's
39:17going on,
39:19but this
39:19is what
39:20just happened
39:20to me
39:20this morning.
39:22What do
39:23I do?
39:26We sat
39:27in the
39:27hallway.
39:29Hunter
39:30was still
39:30in shock.
39:31I think
39:31we all
39:31were,
39:32but he
39:32was just
39:33so very
39:36like ghost.
39:38And I think
39:39Emily was
39:40really,
39:40really worried
39:41about him.
39:43I think
39:44the realism
39:45actually set
39:46in and I
39:49was very
39:50terrified.
39:50I mean,
39:51I didn't sleep
39:51that whole
39:52first night.
39:57Me and
39:58Hunter went
39:58to bed
39:58scared.
40:03And every
40:03noise we
40:04heard,
40:04we thought
40:04we were
40:05going to
40:05be attacked.
40:06I was
40:07like,
40:08is there
40:08someone here
40:09right now?
40:09I don't
40:09even know.
40:10Like,
40:10I was
40:12truly scared.
40:22fear of
40:23unknown got
40:24to all
40:25of us.
40:27Why would
40:27it happen
40:28to me?
40:28Why would
40:28it happen
40:29to my
40:29friends?
40:31They're our
40:32best friends.
40:32Like,
40:33if that just
40:33happened to
40:33our best
40:34friends,
40:34like,
40:35who's to
40:35say that's
40:35not going
40:36to happen
40:36to us?
40:40News out
40:40of Idaho
40:41where four
40:42college students
40:43were killed
40:43early Sunday
40:44morning,
40:45their bodies
40:45found in
40:45an off-campus
40:46house.
40:48Police do
40:49still have
40:50this house
40:50here blocked
40:51off with
40:51crime tape
40:52investigating
40:53here.
40:56Police say
40:57it was a
40:57targeted attack
40:58near the
40:58University of
40:58Idaho.
40:59Saying that
41:00it was an
41:00isolated and
41:01a targeted
41:02attack,
41:03but no
41:03supporting
41:03information
41:04around that.
41:05It was
41:06random
41:07to all
41:08of us,
41:10but they
41:11said it
41:11was targeted.
41:14We were a
41:14big group
41:15of friends.
41:16Why would
41:16you target
41:17those four
41:18specifically?
41:20And so
41:21there's a
41:21big realization
41:23that we
41:24had been
41:24stalked for
41:25so many
41:25months and
41:27had no
41:27clue.
41:30And we
41:31would have
41:31no clue
41:32if we
41:32were
41:32currently.
41:34There's
41:35this person
41:35out there
41:36who had
41:37just
41:37murdered
41:37a
41:38brother
41:39and
41:40he's
41:40still
41:40out
41:40there
41:41somewhere.
