00:01:31there are times in life when we all deal with grief

00:01:35but some losses cut deeper than others

00:01:40when a 39 year old father died suddenly

00:01:43his widow set out to help their three young sons make sense of it

00:01:49she published a book called are you with me

00:01:52about a father who becomes a guardian angel

00:01:55talking about loss with kids can be a tricky subject

00:01:58then she went on a local tv show to share it with the world

00:02:01my kids and i kind of wrote this book on the different emotions and

00:02:07grieving processes that we've experienced last year

00:02:10before that awful loss it seemed eric and cory richens led a charmed life

00:02:15a beautiful couple they both looked very successful

00:02:19they looked very happy together

00:02:20raising their boys in this idyllic place surrounded by mountains just outside of park city utah

00:02:27but things aren't always as they seem

00:02:30you're a tv lifestyle host who's now in the middle of a murder investigation

00:02:35it's crazy this is the most surreal thing that has happened in my career

00:02:40how did this happen to a normal mom having a really good life

00:02:44how did it get from there to here

00:02:51it all began on march 4th 2022

00:02:54with a pre-dawn call to 9-1-1

00:02:58okay tell me exactly what happened

00:02:59i don't i don't know

00:03:01i was sleeping with my kids

00:03:04cory richens told the dispatcher she'd woken up to find her husband eric not breathing

00:03:09he's just cold

00:03:11who's cold

00:03:12my husband

00:03:14first responders arrived at the house on willow court 10 minutes later

00:03:19what's your first name

00:03:20it's what happened today

00:03:21i don't know

00:03:24you were just fine

00:03:25you were fine

00:03:27cory told deputies she had already tried cpr

00:03:30paramedics continued those life-saving efforts

00:03:33she's had two epi's in her hand

00:03:37reporter shelby lofton covered the story for nbc affiliate ksl

00:03:42they're doing what they can but the efforts are failing and so the bedroom is loud and chaotic

00:03:48there's a lot of people in there but it doesn't look like this is a man whose life can be

00:03:54saved

00:03:55father and local businessman eric richens was pronounced dead at the scene

00:04:00deputies asked cory about their night

00:04:02what time did you see him

00:04:05when he was alert

00:04:06we had a drink together at nine to celebrate something at work tomorrow

00:04:12okay

00:04:14what does cory say happened that night

00:04:16cory says that the night eric died

00:04:18they decided to have a moscow mule

00:04:21and a lemon drum

00:04:22she told the deputies after the two drinks

00:04:25she and eric turned in for the night

00:04:27we went to bed

00:04:29i went to bed

00:04:33nate eaton followed the story for east idaho news

00:04:36one of their sons was having a rough night having nightmares so she went to lie down with him

00:04:41she stayed in his bed likely fell asleep for some time

00:04:45i just woke up

00:04:47i know when i sleep with my kids i wake up and i go back in my own bed

00:04:51i just crawl over on his side

00:04:56and he was laying in bed

00:05:02and then she realized something wasn't right he wasn't snoring normally he snored she jumped out of bed she turned

00:05:09on the light he doesn't have a pulse

00:05:11cory called her mom lisa darden with the horrible news

00:05:15mom

00:05:18who's in my house

00:05:20who's in my house

00:05:23when lisa got there

00:05:24she wondered if eric's recent allergy shots had something to do with his death

00:05:48soon they got word to cory's older brother dj

00:05:52how do you get the news that eric has died

00:05:55my mom called me that morning to let me know and then i jumped in the car and headed down

00:06:02there immediately

00:06:03that's such you know just shocking news when someone is that age so young to just die in the middle

00:06:11of the night

00:06:21when eric's sister katie arrived cory told her what she had told deputies

00:06:25and they just turned over to cuddle him and his body was just so cold

00:06:31as eric's family and friends struggled with his loss

00:06:34they could not have known the saga of eric and cory richens would take years to untangle

00:06:41the betrayal here is remarkable

00:06:44and unique

00:06:45something was about to happen that would rock your family to its core

00:06:50i can't even describe it i mean who whoever sees that coming

00:07:01the first thing i thought about

00:07:04when i heard this story

00:07:06was this is going to be on dateline i know it is

00:07:10my husband's active

00:07:12we didn't just die in his sleep

00:07:13this is insane

00:07:34by morning the paramedics and deputies had packed up and left the richens house

00:07:39in small town camas utah the sad news traveled fast

00:07:43at the mirror lake diner the breakfast rush was in full swing when owner gabe morin first heard about his

00:07:49friend

00:07:49who called you with the news

00:07:52my wife

00:07:53that's a shocker

00:07:54when

00:07:55you know

00:07:56you just don't ever expect to get news like that

00:07:59he seemed like a healthy guy right young

00:08:01yeah

00:08:01oh yeah

00:08:01vibrant

00:08:02strong as an ox

00:08:03it sounded like natural causes

00:08:05and very unexpected

00:08:08eric always seemed the picture of good health

00:08:11gabe says he loved outdoor sports

00:08:13especially snowmobiling

00:08:15we're snowmobiling at 11,000 feet

00:08:17he's not having any problems

00:08:19he's not short of breath

00:08:20he's

00:08:20he's in very strong good shape

00:08:22you saw eric

00:08:25the day he died

00:08:26yeah that morning he came in

00:08:28and had his chicken fried steak

00:08:30we chatted for a bit

00:08:31everything was normal

00:08:33how did he look

00:08:34physically

00:08:35to you when he was here

00:08:36yeah healthy normal

00:08:38less than 24 hours later

00:08:39he's gone

00:08:40yeah

00:08:42cory's brother dj arrived from wyoming

00:08:44to console his sister

00:08:46i mean cory was

00:08:48i'll say a puddle in a corner

00:08:49it's like every time he turned around

00:08:50she's just bawling her eyes out

00:08:52you know there was a few of us there

00:08:54that were kind of

00:08:54keeping the boys preoccupied

00:08:56or

00:08:56yeah

00:08:57and your heart is obviously breaking

00:08:59for cory and for your

00:09:01your three nephews

00:09:03yes

00:09:03yeah

00:09:04i mean and he was a good friend of mine

00:09:05you know

00:09:05so as soon as i got the news

00:09:07i broke down

00:09:10eric and his two sisters

00:09:11were raised in a tight-knit family

00:09:13he was particularly close

00:09:15with his father gene

00:09:15who taught him the value

00:09:17of hard work

00:09:17at the family's cattle ranch

00:09:20during college

00:09:21eric took on some masonry work

00:09:22it was on one of those jobs

00:09:24that he met cory

00:09:25at the home depot

00:09:26she worked there part-time

00:09:28between college classes

00:09:30she was a darling

00:09:31sociable

00:09:32just nice

00:09:33cute

00:09:34bubbly

00:09:35very smart i thought

00:09:36linda king worked alongside cory

00:09:39at the registers

00:09:39i was always

00:09:41like the mother hen

00:09:42and you know this

00:09:43you know how guys can get

00:09:44were the guys interested in cory

00:09:46then

00:09:47almost every one of them were

00:09:48yeah

00:09:49sometimes she'd get a little scared

00:09:51you know so i'd have to walk over there

00:09:53and tell him come on over to my register

00:09:56you know

00:09:56yeah

00:09:57and deal with mama over here

00:09:58you know so they would

00:09:59you know

00:09:59you're like her protector

00:10:00i was

00:10:01linda did approve of one customer

00:10:03who took an interest in cory

00:10:05why was eric your favorite customer

00:10:07he just had the best personality

00:10:09he had the laugh

00:10:13i'm gonna go

00:10:18cory liked him too

00:10:20she goes

00:10:21i like him

00:10:22you know

00:10:22and

00:10:23it didn't take very long

00:10:25and they were going out on a date

00:10:26this is like out of a rom-com

00:10:29oh yeah

00:10:30she's working there

00:10:31he comes in

00:10:33and they were on the fast track

00:10:34within a few months

00:10:36cory moved in with eric

00:10:37and soon she was expecting a baby boy

00:10:40she was excited to be a mom

00:10:42was that always something she wanted to do

00:10:44over the moon

00:10:44i didn't know that so much

00:10:47until she had her first son

00:10:48and

00:10:48that

00:10:50that was her life calling

00:10:51was to be a mom

00:10:52they eventually married

00:10:54and eric started his own masonry business

00:10:56with his best friend

00:10:57they did rock

00:10:59on these beautiful

00:11:01beautiful homes here in park city

00:11:03i mean gorgeous

00:11:0420,000 square foot homes

00:11:05yeah i've seen some of eric's work

00:11:07yes

00:11:08it's beautiful

00:11:08yes

00:11:09i mean their work is incredible

00:11:11but eric had such a drive

00:11:13and a direction that

00:11:14i think really propelled that company

00:11:16and gave eric financial independence

00:11:19to buy that spacious five-bedroom home

00:11:21a good thing

00:11:23because soon the couple would welcome

00:11:25two more sons

00:11:26life was good for

00:11:28cory and eric and the boys

00:11:29yes

00:11:31yeah it was

00:11:32it really was

00:11:33according to cory

00:11:34it was a much more stable life

00:11:36than she knew as a child

00:11:38cory did not have the best of childhoods

00:11:41her father served time in prison

00:11:43and she says that

00:11:44by the time she was a teenager

00:11:46she had lived

00:11:46to two dozen places

00:11:48that they had moved all over the place

00:11:50for us to stay in one spot

00:11:51for three four months

00:11:52was saying a lot

00:11:54we would move quite a bit

00:11:55it was probably different

00:11:56than most kids grow up

00:11:58dj says his sister was driven

00:12:00as a teenager

00:12:01cory worked for her aunt's cleaning business

00:12:03helping care for some of park city's most lavish homes

00:12:06now with her new life

00:12:08she wasn't interested in cleaning houses

00:12:10cory wanted to flip them

00:12:12and get in on the booming real estate market

00:12:15cory's good friend greg hall

00:12:17who owns a marketing company

00:12:18helped her get the word out

00:12:19her house flipping

00:12:21is it like hgtv

00:12:23yeah kind of

00:12:24she would find something

00:12:25that she felt

00:12:26that she could

00:12:26buy at the right price

00:12:28and fix it up

00:12:28and flip it

00:12:29and uh

00:12:30and make a profit

00:12:33by 2022

00:12:34the couple was bringing in

00:12:35significant money

00:12:36and between three kids

00:12:38and two careers

00:12:39their lives were constantly in motion

00:12:41busy

00:12:42busy busy

00:12:43soccer

00:12:44i mean soccer was

00:12:45eric's passion

00:12:46but it was also the boys

00:12:47and they gave back to the community a lot

00:12:49i mean

00:12:50they were busy

00:12:51and cory was working on the biggest deal of her career

00:12:54the purchase of a 20,000 square foot home

00:12:56she called the midway mansion

00:12:58this estate

00:12:59was

00:13:00quite something

00:13:02was an unfinished house

00:13:04in the middle of this beautiful valley

00:13:06surrounded by

00:13:07our gorgeous snow-capped mountains

00:13:09that's a massive deal

00:13:11this wasn't just something that was pennies

00:13:14this was

00:13:14millions of dollars to buy

00:13:17and then

00:13:18in the middle of all that

00:13:19cory got covid

00:13:20and eric suddenly fell ill

00:13:23and he gets really really sick

00:13:25on valentine's day

00:13:27to the point that he has to lie down

00:13:29and take a nap

00:13:30in the middle of the day

00:13:31that is not eric

00:13:33eric does not stop

00:13:34he's not going to

00:13:35lay down for 90 minutes

00:13:37on a weekday

00:13:38and have a nap

00:13:38because he doesn't feel well

00:13:40eric told a friend

00:13:41he thought it might have been

00:13:42an allergic reaction

00:13:43to a sandwich he ate

00:13:45after using an epi pen

00:13:46he felt better

00:13:47but perhaps it was a warning sign

00:13:49of things to come

00:13:50because two weeks after that

00:13:52eric was dead

00:13:53a deputy at the scene

00:13:55told cory there would be an autopsy

00:13:56because he was

00:13:58in good health

00:13:58and at his age

00:13:59and everything like that

00:14:00okay

00:14:00our medical examiner

00:14:02is going to come

00:14:02and do their investigation

00:14:05real quick

00:14:06and then also our detective

00:14:08just to make sure

00:14:09that everything's documented

00:14:11you know correctly

00:14:14as eric's body

00:14:15went off to the medical

00:14:16examiner's office

00:14:17his family made

00:14:19funeral arrangements

00:14:20and cory was about

00:14:21to discover

00:14:22that her husband

00:14:23had been keeping a secret

00:14:24i mean when you're told

00:14:26your husband just died

00:14:27this is no longer

00:14:28your house

00:14:29there's probably

00:14:30going to be an altercation

00:14:31and there was

00:14:47eric's three young boys

00:14:48were now fatherless

00:14:50overnight

00:14:50they'd lost their protector

00:14:52their best friend

00:14:53your heart must have broken

00:14:55for those boys

00:14:56oh absolutely

00:14:57yeah i mean

00:14:58to lose it

00:14:58i lost my dad

00:14:59when i was 20

00:15:00for these kids

00:15:01to lose their dad

00:15:02and you know

00:15:03what seven years old

00:15:05ten years old

00:15:06i mean that's

00:15:07that's crazy

00:15:07that's terrible

00:15:08how are the boys

00:15:09handling it

00:15:10i don't think for

00:15:11them at their age

00:15:12that it had actually

00:15:13clicked in their mind

00:15:14what had just happened

00:15:16cory's friend

00:15:17says she lost

00:15:18the love of her life

00:15:19how was she doing

00:15:22she was a mess

00:15:23she was just shattered

00:15:25destroyed her

00:15:26but as cory grieved

00:16:40pretty much

00:16:41explain to cory

00:16:41that you know

00:16:42nothing belongs

00:16:43to cory

00:16:43at this point

00:16:45so i think

00:16:46you know

00:16:46she was obviously

00:16:47pretty upset

00:16:47with that

00:16:48a year and a half

00:16:49before he died

00:16:50while the couple

00:16:51was going through

00:16:51a rough patch

00:16:52eric had secretly

00:16:54gone to an estate

00:16:55planner to set up

00:16:55a trust

00:16:56he put his sister

00:16:57katie in charge

00:16:59the trust states

00:17:00that in the event

00:17:01of eric's death

00:22:04it's a

00:22:05painkiller

00:22:06abuse

00:22:07its intense

00:22:09history of

00:22:10prescription

00:22:10abuse

00:22:13no

00:22:13i mean

00:22:14no

00:22:14when he was

00:22:15in high

00:22:15school and

00:22:16stuff

00:22:16yeah

00:26:41these days is

00:26:46that's manufactured

00:26:47by drug cartels as

00:26:48opposed to by

00:26:49pharmaceutical companies

00:27:38as the first

00:27:39anniversary of her

00:27:40husband's death

00:27:40approached corey

00:27:42channeled her grief

00:27:43into a new project

00:27:44a self-published

00:27:46children's book called

00:27:50take shape

00:27:51she did it as a

00:27:52tribute to her

00:27:53children and to

00:27:54give them a

00:27:56memory and for

00:27:57other children that

00:27:58have been through

00:28:00surely struggling

00:28:02be correct that's

00:28:04correct and she

00:28:04wanted to comfort

00:28:05them and i thought

00:28:06it was a good thing

00:28:06all she was trying to

00:28:08do was find a way

00:28:09that kind of helped

00:28:10the boys cope with

00:28:11it to help promote

00:28:13her book corey went

00:28:16on the salt lake city

00:28:16talk show good

00:28:17things utah so my

00:28:19husband passed away

00:28:20unexpectedly last year

00:28:22so it's march 4th was

00:28:24a one-year anniversary

00:28:25for us the book

00:28:26tells a fictional story

00:28:28that mirrors her own

00:28:29children's loss

00:28:30dina manzanares is a

00:28:35little boy who has

00:28:36lost his dad and as

00:28:37he's going through his

00:28:39life going to school

00:29:17in her 30s raising three

00:29:19small kids here she is

00:29:21trying to cope she's

00:29:22trying to spread a

00:29:23message to others to

00:29:24help them cope as well

00:29:25that sounds like a

00:29:26conversation that we

00:29:27would like to hear more

00:29:28about my kids and i

00:29:29kind of wrote this book

00:29:31on the different emotions

00:29:34grieving processes that

00:29:36we've experienced last

00:29:37year and you know hoping

00:29:39that it can kind of help

00:29:40other kids myself and the

00:29:42co-hosts on the show are

00:29:43all moms with children we

00:29:45all have empathy for other

00:29:49mothers you know i just

00:29:50watched the struggle that my

00:29:52kids were going through and

00:29:53inside is an illustration of

00:30:17appearance i did i thought she

00:30:19did pretty good nervous but yeah

00:30:23i mean it's if it helps one kid

00:30:25it was well worth it the co-host

00:30:27also sensed cory's nerves and

00:30:30something else what i did notice

00:30:32was just reading body language she

00:30:35was a little bit protected she had

00:30:38her big heavy coat on and i thought

00:30:41oh she'll take it off before we do

00:30:43the interview but she never did did

00:30:44you chalk that up to you know the

00:30:46fact that she's been through this

00:30:47tragedy i did that all changed when

00:30:51dina arrived at work the next day

00:30:52get on my computer checking my

00:30:55emails and there is a anonymous

00:30:57message that's come into the entire

00:30:59station to every single person at

00:31:02the station yes the subject line was

00:31:05are you with me i open it up and all

00:31:08it says in capital letters and many

00:31:11exclamation points is you know she

00:31:12killed her husband i mean this is

00:31:15creepy it was definitely creepy it was

00:31:18definitely weird but we didn't we

00:31:21didn't really give it another thought

00:31:22after the initial whoa you don't think

00:31:25maybe she did kill her husband no

00:31:28because wild emails can come in and we

00:31:32thought it was bizarre we clocked it as

00:31:33being completely bizarre still the email

00:31:37gave dina pause then she remembered

00:31:39something corey shared in the green room

00:31:41at the tv station about eric's death

00:31:43she said my husband passed away from

00:31:46covid and he had a lung issue i didn't

00:31:50pry when she said that and i thought oh

00:31:53covid oh well maybe he did have something

00:31:55underlying a week after that first email

00:31:58dina got another message that's when i

00:32:02started to go okay hold on what is going

00:32:04on i checked my facebook inbox and it's

00:32:08somebody that i don't know and it said you

00:32:10need to investigate your children's book

00:32:12author did you know that she is a suspect

00:32:14in the murder of her husband the plot

00:32:16thickens yes and this is the point where

00:32:19i felt like i knew something was up

00:32:21something was up investigators had been

00:32:24looking into corey's past and her story

00:32:27of a perfect life with her husband was

00:32:29about to unravel it's a house of cards

00:32:32it is a delicate house of cards that she

00:32:35has constructed and it's beginning to fall

00:32:38apart

00:32:53beyond writing a children's book corey had

00:32:56also filed two lawsuits months earlier her

00:32:59target was eric's sister katie who controlled

00:33:02eric's trust and with it her brother's estate

00:33:06you know nothing belongs to corey at this

00:33:07point so i think you know she was obviously

00:33:10pretty upset with that while eric's estate

00:33:12attorney says she assured corey she could stay

00:33:14in the house corey wanted to undo the trust

00:33:17and get at least half of her husband's assets

00:33:20still her brother maintained she was only

00:33:23interested in one thing everybody looked at

00:33:25it as she was trying to get money out of the

00:33:27estate or whatever she never cared about

00:33:28the money she was trying to keep her house

00:33:31in response to corey's lawsuits eric's sister hired private investigator todd

00:33:36gabler my job was to investigate on behalf of the estate

00:33:40to determine whether there was a wrongful death

00:33:44to determine if there was financial mismanagement

00:33:47eric's sisters and father wanted to know if corey squandered his money on her

00:33:51house flipping business or was even responsible for eric's death

00:33:56when do you all realize that the richens family has hired a private detective

00:34:00to look into all of this we knew he was reaching out to people

00:34:04he reached out to my older sister too and then i reached out to him we didn't have

00:34:09a pleasant conversation we'll say but uh i just basically told him stay away from my family

00:34:14the pi brought on a forensic accountant who found corey was deep in the red

00:34:18she'd taken on too many houses none of it was solvent robbing peter to pay paul that's

00:34:24exactly right having no money to fund your next project you take the funding from your previous

00:34:30project and apply it to that it's a house of cards it is a delicate house of cards that she

00:34:36has

00:34:36constructed and it's beginning to fall apart corey was in a huge amount of financial trouble

00:34:44she was borrowing money from lenders that charged extremely high interest rates

00:34:51to pay off other lenders that were charging high interest rates and there was something else

00:34:56a year and a half before he died eric's family says he learned corey had secretly borrowed against

00:35:01their own home to start her business corey has taken out this home equity line of credit

00:35:07250 000 without telling him and she apparently forged his signature on this it was after eric discovered

00:35:16that loan that loan that he set up the trust giving control to his sister the family says that he

00:35:21did

00:35:21that because he didn't trust corey i think that's evident there is a lot of evidence that suggests that

00:35:30the trust between these two was broken and that eric took steps to protect his boys

00:35:39from her from her financial mismanagement to anyone who who wonders why eric didn't just

00:35:45leave did you learn anything during your investigation about why he chose to stay

00:35:51i think that he was concerned for the welfare of his three sons as for the home she did sell

00:35:59some buyers accused corey of lying about their condition and then back here the lipstick on a pig kind

00:36:06of classic scenario is what we we stepped into here we knew molly crosswhite bought one of corey's

00:36:12homes in midway utah her plan was to rent it out but she left it not in great shape not

00:36:18great looked

00:36:18good looked good looked good but was not a place that we were going to be proud or comfortable putting

00:36:24tenants in molly wanted the house and set up an inspection we learned there was no insulation

00:36:30there was electrical issues disappointed she wanted some of her money back we had to negotiate

00:36:37while under contract a credit that we would get at closing and let them know hey we can't rent it

00:36:43out

00:36:43the way that it is still she says the credit didn't begin to cover the home's problems looks good feels

00:36:49bad kind of a deal right taryn and alec wright bought a house from corey that they also say looked

00:36:55good

00:36:57i remember you know walking into the front door and we i'm getting goosebumps right now looking up i

00:37:03was like we immediately agreed we're like wow weeks after moving in they say their family's health

00:37:09started to seriously decline then they found something troubling in their son's bedroom when i moved

00:37:15the dresser away from the wall the mold was growing behind the dresser and so we never saw it before

00:37:21yeah and that's when we've noticed it growing out of the walls and so my gosh yes after testing

00:37:28revealed dangerous mold levels throughout the house the family immediately moved out they say their health

00:37:34issues improved i do val maynard sold the house to corey and said he disclosed to her it had serious

00:37:41issues i showed them the really bad bathroom we hadn't used for about a year or so downstairs what

00:37:48was wrong with the bathroom i had lots of water damage the rights have now sued corey alleging among

00:37:55other things that in the sales contract she checked no on each question related to previous water damage

00:38:02corey has denied the allegations in the lawsuit

00:38:07for corey the walls would soon start to feel like they were closing in

00:38:12that's because investigators were about to find a surprising trail of texts there were dozens of

00:38:18texts on some days going back and forth that's a lot for a housekeeper a lot for someone who's cleaning

00:38:25your house and more scandalous accusations were coming you discover corey richens has a lover a secret

00:38:33lover i do corey wanted to live her life without eric richens

00:38:52for over a year the tragic death of eric richens continued to weigh heavily on his family

00:38:58they were searching for answers and for someone to be held accountable this was a family who would

00:39:03that would stop at nothing to get justice for eric they would stop at nothing they wanted justice for

00:39:11their brother and son they believed they knew who that someone was even in those early hours after eric's

00:39:18death eric richens sister approached one of the investigators in the driveway and said

00:39:22i think corey had something to do with it really they assumed that she was involved in his death so

00:39:28they had to build their case when you have a family member pointing out a spouse right away

00:39:35that is a big red flag a big red flag another red flag that huge property the so-called midway

00:39:43mansion

00:39:44this 20 000 square foot mansion that sits on 10 acres at the base of the wasatch mountains was one

00:39:48of the

00:39:49properties corey wanted to flip but that would cost millions of dollars and was apparently a big source

00:39:54of contention between corey and eric remember corey said they were celebrating the midway mansion deal

00:40:01the night before eric died with those moscow mules and lemon drop shots the family told investigators

00:40:07eric was reluctant to buy that home pat reevey is a reporter with ksl.com corey was really hot on

00:40:14getting that property and flipping it but eric not so much he thought no this is just not going to

00:40:21be

00:40:21a wise investment eric's sister was stunned when she learned corey was going to close the deal just

00:40:26hours after his death the family was also troubled by corey's initial story that eric died of a lung

00:40:33fungus just like the one that killed his mother she told even eric's dad that they found this same

00:40:41fungus in eric's lungs which was a complete lie even eric had been suspicious of corey he told his

00:40:50family about that valentine's day sandwich that made him sick just two weeks before his death i spoke

00:40:56with a number of people who he had contacted regarding his health condition that day and they

00:41:04were all very alarmed at how he sounded and what he was saying to them what was he saying he

00:41:11was

00:41:11saying that corey was trying to poison him eric had also told his family about an unusual drink he

00:41:17had with corey on vacation years earlier they took a trip to greece and that after eric became violently

00:41:25sick now we don't know why but he left to the conclusion that corey was trying to poison him

00:41:32and then he starts saying these statements to family members that if something were to happen to me

00:41:38look at corey the family says that's why eric secretly removed corey's control over his estate

00:41:45he wanted to protect his sons from a wife he no longer trusted he's 39 and creating this living trust

00:41:52and making big changes it gives us reason to believe that he was in fear for his life so my

00:42:01husband passed away unexpectedly last year so and as she sat under the tv lights on good things utah

00:42:07corey may have believed the heat of the investigation was fading she was wrong a year after eric's death

00:42:14a new detective was assigned to the case we're seeing the shift from law enforcement looking more

00:42:22at corey as a suspect one reason investigators eventually ruled out the possibility that eric

00:42:29had accidentally overdosed did you find any evidence that showed that eric richens had a secret drug

00:42:34problem there's no evidence to suggest that at all as they were looking for a connection between corey and

00:42:41the drugs that killed eric investigators found something curious on her phone they look at the

00:42:46frequency of communication who she's communicating with the most who she's calling the most they also

00:42:53notice a frequency of communication with carmen who is her housekeeper these two are

00:43:02it seems talking about or discussing more than just cleaning houses yeah absolutely detectives found

00:43:08evidence of 800 text messages between corey and carmen prior to eric's death most of the texts had

00:43:15been deleted so when law enforcement looks into carmen lauber they come to find out that she's got

00:43:21significant drug history and that she's actively in drug court uh working off her previous charges

00:43:29uh i think this would be a big moment for law enforcement so they start putting two and two together

00:43:35that maybe carmen's the one supplying the fentanyl yeah and i don't think it's a huge leap you've got

00:43:40deleted text messages you've got an abnormal frequency in communication between corey and her

00:43:48housekeeper and then you've got the drug history they need to talk to carmen immediately detectives were

00:43:54able to get a search warrant for carmen's house they find a firearm during that search i can tell you

00:44:01from

00:44:01experience when a convicted felon is in possession of a firearm those are real consequences and they

00:44:09found something else up on a wall amongst inspirational quotes and family photos lo and behold on the mirror

00:44:17is eric richard's obituary this is telling carmen is close to eric and the boys and she is conspicuously

00:44:27absent from his funeral her absence is noticed by the family and i consider that early on as possible

00:44:37evidence of consciousness of guilt it was becoming clear to investigators that carmen was connected to

00:44:43eric's death it it's just not me they arrested carmen on that gun violation and sat her down in an

00:44:50interrogation room that the details about everything we've been talking about are going to be important

00:44:55for homicide investigation right for homicide investigation when they asked her if she had

00:45:00sold drugs to corey her memory was fuzzy so i wanted that her so abusing but okay so i want

00:45:07to say when

00:45:08she she she asked but like i said um oh i can't remember the music so they offered carmen an

00:45:17incentive

00:45:17to help jog her memory we believe you and that's why we're here working on what your get out of

00:45:22jail free

00:45:22carc looks like soon enough carmen's memory seemed to get better and she would have quite the story to

00:45:28tell we need hard details there's no more i'm going to do whatever because i've struggled so hard to get

00:45:34that's great motivation detectives were speaking with housekeeper carmen lauber who they believed was the

00:45:56key link between corey and the fentanyl that killed her husband eric give up the details that will ensure

00:46:04corey gets convicted of murder oh my god we need hard details that there's no more i'm going to do

00:46:11whatever because i've struggled so hard to keep me like that that's great motivation like i said you

00:46:16hold on i love eric he was a damn diggy and so carmen began it was february 2022 a month

00:46:24before eric

00:46:24died carmen said corey reached out and asked if she could get drugs for a real estate investor

00:46:30corey figured that carmen might have access to someone who could provide her with drugs and carmen

00:46:37did a few days before eric ate that valentine's day sandwich corey directed carmen to a house she

00:46:43had flipped carmen told investigators she went inside took the cash corey had left and went to buy the

00:46:49drugs carmen said she later returned and placed them in the backyard fire pit for corey i pulled into the

00:46:55driveway to slant and there was just a it wasn't a big fire pit like it was a tiny fire

00:47:00pit it's

00:47:01kind of the infamous fire pit of midway and it's right here and this is where apparently drugs were

00:47:08left i'm not quite sure detectives paid a visit to the owner of the house you've already met her

00:47:13molly crosswhite how did you feel when you started to learn these details that that this house that you

00:47:19bought might have been used to secure really a murder weapon of sorts drugs it was upsetting it

00:47:28just was kind of just shocking i don't know how else to say it but the last thing i expected

00:48:06the michael jackson drug is that it killed him but that message indicates a state of mind that she

00:48:14wants the drugs that are lethal doesn't matter what it is detectives tracked down carmen's drug dealer

00:48:20a man named robert crozier it wasn't that hard to find him he was in jail how are you confused

00:48:29i imagine

00:48:31you are so we're here to talk to you about a transaction that you made a little over a year

00:48:37ago with a female named carmen lopper you met her at a maverick and draper on two separate occasions

00:48:44in february up last year so a little over a year ago okay she's gonna call the way but she

00:48:51asked for

00:48:52blue specifically or fentanyl specifically i think she might have asked me for blue like manicure she knew

00:48:58what's your butt okay so she so she knew that there was absolutely okay with the dealer corroborating

00:49:05carmen's story detectives now believe they had what they'd been searching for the crucial link between

00:49:11corey richens and the fentanyl that killed her husband it was a monday morning a month after that tv

00:49:17appearance law enforcement waited until corey's boys were at school and then they arrested her corey

00:49:24richens is here in the summit county jail tonight we're told she is being held without bail i just

00:49:30kept on thinking she couldn't do that she wouldn't do that yeah it's a lot to process especially in a

00:49:41small valley like this it's uh pretty heavy stuff suddenly the story of the grieving mother turned

00:49:48alleged killer who wrote a book to help her sons was everywhere a headline making case out of utah

00:49:54oh indeed part-time author turned alleged killer if you haven't heard by now this is corey richens

00:50:00and the reason we're talking about this today is they have now formally charged her if she did it if

00:50:05she

00:50:05planned this how in the world can you come on live tv put yourself in the spotlight want publicity for

00:50:13your

00:50:14product and tell us that the most important thing to you is to keep his memory alive each and every

00:50:21day

00:50:22corey called her friend greg do you remember the first thing she said to you during your first phone

00:50:28call after her arrest um yeah she was crying and she said she was scared and what did you say

00:50:35to her

00:50:35things would be all right things gonna be okay we're gonna help you five weeks after her arrest corey got

00:50:42her chance to ask for bail miserations good morning attorney sky lazaro defended her there's nothing to

00:50:50show that corey did anything to eric being bad with money does not make you a murderer toward the end

00:50:59of

00:50:59the hearing eric's sister amy addressed the court if she gets out on bail i will be afraid not only

00:51:05for

00:51:05my own life and those of all of my family but most importantly for the lives of eric's three sons

00:51:12our family has already suffered enough please do not let corey out on bail where she will be a risk

00:51:17to do further harm defending corey darton richens shall continue to be tamed without bail corey later

00:51:24entered a plea of not guilty and braced herself for the battle she was about to fight you took an

00:51:49for nearly three years corey richens called the summit county jail home you keep calling and visiting and

00:51:57messages you know this is daily off and on all day continually you're her lifeline 100 100 we of

00:52:08course wanted to talk to corey too in may of 2024 she sent us a recorded message i've been silent

00:52:15for a

00:52:15year worked away for my kids my family my life living with the media telling the world who they think

00:52:21i am

00:52:22what they think i've done and things are speaking up i'm anxious to get to trial and i'm ready to

00:52:29get

00:52:29this one heck of a fight you took the innocent mom away from her babies and this means war in

00:52:37february

00:52:382026 almost four years after her husband eric's death corey at last got her chance to fight the charges

00:52:44against her first degree murder and attempted murder along with fraud and forgery she sat at

00:52:50the defense table flanked by her new team of attorneys eric supporters lined one row of the

00:52:56packed courtroom corey's another my name is brad bloodworth i am one of summit county's criminal

00:53:02prosecutors the evidence will prove that corey richens murdered eric richens the prosecution rolled back

00:53:11the timeline to valentine's day 2022 two weeks before eric's death good morning sir hello turns

00:53:19out that sandwich eric ate that made him sick came from his friend gabe morin's diner the jury got a

00:53:25look at the to-go order that corey called in so at 8 55 you know it says a greek

00:53:30omelet quinoa salad

00:53:33bagel sandwich with hash browns and then corey is typed in does the detective tell you

00:53:38why this is coming into play sure this order nope nope the prosecution argued corey was the one who

00:53:47picked up the food so she could put something in eric's sandwich her first failed attempt to murder

00:53:53her husband we know that corey ordered it corey picked it up in person eric was a really good friend

00:54:02of mine eric's business partner cody wright told the jury eric called him at 2 pm that valentine's day

00:54:08why is it you remember that phone call the fear in his voice the the

00:54:17urgency of of the situation the state theorized that corey learned from her mistake after that

00:54:24failed attempt with the sandwich you bite into that and you taste the sourness of that fentanyl pill

00:54:32you do not get the full dosage of what has been put on that sandwich because you take a couple

00:54:37of

00:54:38bites and you put it down prosecutors argued her next try was something easier to ingest the moscow meal

00:54:44she made that night was ginger beer and fentanyl the lemon shot drop shot

00:54:54maybe lemon and fentanyl if it's in a shot glass masked by alcohol you throw that back and the wrong

00:55:03taste doesn't matter because it's too late it's already in your system the prosecutor told the jury to

00:55:11listen carefully to corey's behavior on her 911 call the 911 call operator asks her to perform cpr

00:55:19corey told first responders she'd started cpr but the prosecution said there was more to the story

00:55:24she seemed to do everything she could to avoid cpr as precious minutes ticked by are you able to lay

00:55:31him on the floor on the ground on the floor on the ground you can do it you can do

00:55:42it this sheriff's

00:55:43deputy was one of the first to the richens house he said corey didn't act like most grieving family

00:55:49members right after a death normally they have tears um they look at me when i ask them a question

00:55:57while they respond it just every time i spoke to miss richens just seems like her face was in her

00:56:05hands and i couldn't see her face it was just a little abnormal your honor the state calls katie

00:56:12richens benson eric's sister katie also testified about corey's behavior that morning she wasn't

00:56:19crying like i was she wasn't hysterical katie said not long after corey told her boys their father was

00:56:25dead she was talking about closing the deal on the midway mansion i was dumbfounded and i looked at corey

00:56:33and said you can't tell me you're going to close on that midway mansion when my brother just died and

00:56:42she looked at me matter of fact and said yeah absolutely he has nothing to do with it the money's

00:56:48already gone through it's all my business i'm going to behavior was one thing but to make the case stick

00:56:56prosecutors knew they needed to connect the dots between corey and the drugs that killed eric

00:57:01for that they needed their star witness beyond the state to cause carmen lopper on the stand she

00:57:08admitted to a troubled past do you have a criminal history involving drugs yes carmen testified about

00:57:17corey asking her if she knew someone who could get pain medication for one of her investors i had text

00:57:22corey back and told her that i had a friend that could get them but they were fat not pills

00:57:31how did corey richards respond she said okay go ahead and get the state called this digital

00:57:38forensics expert to prove that carmen met up with drug dealer robert crozier just days before the

00:57:43valentine's incident and the week before eric died they're located in at or near the exact same location

00:57:51prosecutors argued it was proof carmen was telling the truth so all of that information

00:57:58corroborates the story that carmen is telling which was helpful because when he took the stand

00:58:05robert crozier couldn't remember how many times he'd met up with her like it was like four years ago so

00:58:12like i don't really remember if i met her more than once the prosecution presented even more digital

00:58:19evidence to the jury the searches corey made on her cell phone those searches were incriminating

00:58:26the prosecutor told the jury these are the searches

00:58:31what was corey richards worried about how to completely wipe an iphone clean remotely can

00:58:43investigation what is a legal dose of fentanyl your thoughts on those searches it is incredibly

00:58:50important information about her state of mind at the time that those searches were made but why had

00:58:57corey allegedly killed eric this wife and mother of three had kept her share of secrets but perhaps

00:59:04none as explosive as him do you solemnly swear the testimony you're about to give in the matter before

00:59:10the court to be the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth subject to the pains and

00:59:13penalties of perjury is the state ready to proceed mr bloodwood prosecutors may not be legally required

00:59:35to provide motive in a murder case but they also know it's human nature to want to know the

00:59:40why why why would corey richards murder her husband eric reason number one said prosecutor brad

00:59:47bloodworth money more than anything she wanted his money to perpetuate her facade of privilege affluence

00:59:59and success the prosecution called forensic accountant brooke carrington to the stand

01:00:06she was initially hired by eric's family after he died as of the date that eric richards died

01:00:13corey richards was in financial distress on march the 5th 2022 immediately after closing on the midway

01:00:23mansion what was the amount of corey richards liabilities right about eight million dollars as her

01:00:32company tanked the state argued corey homed in on her husband's life insurance policies

01:00:37a month before he died prosecutors said corey took out a one hundred thousand dollar policy without eric's

01:00:43knowledge this handwriting expert testified eric probably did not sign that policy himself there was

01:00:49no evidence that eric authored this signature corey ended up with nearly 1.4 million dollars in life

01:00:59insurance money from eric's death prosecutors also highlighted for the jury the prenuptial agreement

01:01:05corey had signed their prenuptial agreement meant that if she left him she would also leave most of

01:01:13his money the state argued that she believed eric was worth more to her dead than alive i got hired

01:01:19originally as an admin becky lloyd worked for eric's company she recalled a conversation with

01:01:25corey a few months before he died she talked about how she was feeling trapped and uh and she said

01:01:34that

01:01:34in many ways it would be better if he were uh if he were dead the prosecutor told the jury

01:01:39that book

01:01:40corey supposedly wrote to help her children through their grief was in reality also a money grab you see

01:01:47the emails they're in evidence she thought she would sell 100 000 copies in 10 months at five dollars

01:01:54profit a copy that is not tethered to reality but it does provide insight in how desperate she was for

01:02:02money she promoted according to the prosecution there was more than money to corey's motive she had

01:02:08been cheating on eric and was planning a fresh start with another man there was some question behind the

01:02:14scenes of the courthouse if they were even going to find him for him to testify and then her former

01:02:21boyfriend josh grossman entered the packed courtroom josh grossman comes in but it starts off rocky

01:02:28immediately with corey seated just feet away the clerk began swearing him in do you solemnly swear the

01:02:35testimony you're about to give in the matter before the court to be the truth the whole truth and

01:02:38nothing but the truth subject to the pains and penalties of perjury he asks what do you mean

01:02:46by tell the whole truth and the judge immediately stops everything whisks the jury out of the courtroom

01:02:55and sits mr grossman down and tries to spell out for him what he is signing up for mr grossman

01:03:03do you

01:03:03understand the difference between what's true and what's not true i do do you promise under the pains

01:03:09and penalties of perjury to tell the truth when you're asked questions absolutely and josh agrees

01:03:15to do that finally so the jury's brought back in josh's discomfort was palpable he testified that he

01:03:21started working for corey's house flipping business in the park city area in 2020 he told the jury he'd stay

01:03:27in the houses they were working on i had my dog with me we do live in flips me and

01:03:33the dog other than

01:03:35accommodations did she pay you for your service

01:03:41there i mean we didn't have any contractual agreement you know i she she took care of me

01:03:48you know i lived for free she did she gave me money whenever i needed it i just

01:03:55you know i liked her so i had to work for free not that not that she didn't and you

01:04:03know

01:04:05pay me she did from time to time in lump sums and during that time that you were romantically

01:04:12involved with miss richens did you love her yes during that time did you feel that she loved you

01:04:26uh yeah yeah yeah i have a tendency of going head over heels though probably more than most so

01:04:37you know i think she did the prosecutor pointed out that a few months before eric died

01:04:43corey had even booked a trip with josh to the island of saint martin i think that was a birthday

01:04:49present

01:04:50josh's discomfort only grew as the state showed the jury dozens of text messages between him and corey

01:04:55he was having a very difficult time breathing deeply making noises spinning in his chair

01:05:02corey was texting with josh and drove an hour to visit him on valentine's day 2022

01:05:08the day prosecutors alleged she tried to poison eric with that sandwich

01:05:12the following day josh texted corey that he was in love with her she responded like actually in love

01:05:19with me if i was divorced right now and ask you to marry me tomorrow you would josh replied yes

01:05:26in love

01:05:26with why oh you of course i would he then puts his head down on the witness stand like he

01:05:33doesn't want

01:05:33to be there he then starts to cry and wipes tears from his eyes mr grassman over with me do

01:05:40you need

01:05:40a minute or two i don't know what i mean let's just start with why don't we take a five

01:05:46pause for a

01:05:47moment if you don't mind testimony soon resumed and the subject again those texts one week before eric

01:05:55died corey wrote josh i have a crazy dream i divorce and come up with millions and millions

01:06:00we buy midway and live in the guest house raise some kids have a little farm deal corey and josh

01:06:07even made plans to celebrate her purchase of the midway mansion on march 4th 2022 when he didn't

01:06:13hear from her that day he texted what's going on with you you good corey responded no eric passed away

01:06:21josh said the next time he saw corey was two weeks later that's when she asked the iraq war

01:06:26veteran about his time in the military she asked if if i had ever killed anybody sir what was that

01:06:33follow-up question she asked me how it made me feel or something along those lines

01:06:40and then i answered her

01:06:45i took it as not out of the normal though really the prosecution made the point that corey was trying

01:06:53to deal with her guilt of killing her husband by trying to figure out how her boyfriend dealt with

01:07:00it josh said his relationship with corey cooled off in the months following eric's death things

01:07:06weren't the same so i don't know if that led to to us parting ways or or what but it

01:07:12there was a lot on

01:07:13in both of us you know what i mean i understand thank you sir i don't have any further questions

01:07:20after calling dozens of witnesses okay on it then it was the defense's turn with a move no one was

01:07:31expecting i saw a lot of mouths dropped and eyebrows shot up and they stared at that defense table

01:07:54i saw the testimony they had put on 43 witnesses to make their case i'm one of miss richard's attorneys

01:08:03so it's nice to meet you the defense cross-examined 38 of them hoping to unravel it going back to

01:08:09the web

01:08:10searches corey's attorney alex ramos wanted the jury to understand that those questionable searches

01:08:16corey made on her phone happened after eric died i imagine you're aware that all these searches

01:08:22were done after miss richard's knew she was under investigation correct yes corey's former lawyer sky

01:08:29lazaro the timing of these searches i think are probably the most critical and important part of

01:08:36the analysis of them these searches were done after she was served the search warrant for her home and

01:08:44for her electronics she just found out her husband died of a lethal alfredosa fentanyl you might want

01:08:48to know what that means those searches to me were less of an issue than some other things in this

01:08:54case

01:08:54how does the defense combat a lover you know josh's mere existence in this sometimes the best way to

01:09:03combat things that are bad for your client or optically bad for your client is just to hit

01:09:08them head on from the beginning there was no running away from josh the prosecution hammered the point

01:09:14that corey wanted a new life the defense argued it was an affair nothing more would it be fair to

01:09:21say

01:09:21that the talk about a future together between you and corey was really more a fantasy than a realistic

01:09:27expectation my opinion you want my opinion on it sure i'd say yeah yeah more something that

01:09:43that maybe i i thought i wanted but didn't necessarily like i i couldn't picture it in the future you

01:09:51know

01:09:52to counter witnesses who said eric was scared about how sick he got after eating that valentine's day

01:09:58sandwich corey's old friend ali staking testified eric thought the whole thing was funny was everyone

01:10:04laughing yes we were laughing and we jokingly said don't eat with corey future when it came to the

01:10:10accusation that eric's death would bring corey an infusion of cash the defense pointed out eric made a

01:10:16lot of money and would continue making plenty more he declared to the irs that he made over 750 000

01:10:24that was just in one year i mean if you accept that theory that she doesn't like him or she

01:10:29doesn't

01:10:29want to be married to him you know she's she's better off uh with him if it's purely financial

01:10:36motivated the money the boyfriend the sandwich the google searches were all problems for corey

01:10:45good afternoon good afternoon but it was the cross-examination of carmen the housekeeper

01:10:50that could make or break the defense's case reasonable doubt is one of the things that you

01:10:55don't always get in cases but this case does have certain amounts of reasonable doubt and that is you

01:11:03know the stuff with carmen there was carmen's fuzzy memory when police first talked to her you told them

01:11:09more than once over those days you had a lot of memory problems correct that my memory wasn't the best

01:11:14yes to underscore her credibility issues the defense got carmen to admit she had a history

01:11:19of lying in drug court to stay out of prison it's what addicts do when you're using that's true

01:11:24addicts lie and the defense said with carmen it was always about staying out of prison you are willing

01:11:30to do whatever it takes to save yourself from getting kicked out of drug court and going to prison

01:11:35correct i'm going to go forward with the truth yes and you're gonna you tell them i'll do whatever it

01:11:41takes

01:11:44yes the prosecution had given carmen immunity in exchange for her testimony and the bottom line

01:11:50said the defense was cory never actually used the word fentanyl when talking to carmen

01:11:56you told authorities during the course of these interviews that cory richards never asked for fentanyl

01:12:06yes robert crozier who also received immunity for his testimony said on the stand he didn't have

01:12:12fentanyl to sell at the time eric died you had no access to it in january february march of 2022

01:12:19no

01:12:22with the lead detective the defense drove home the point that law enforcement never found any fentanyl

01:12:28in the richens house during that four years period of time as recently as less than a month ago you

01:12:34were still issuing search warrants is that right yes and there were a total of at least 10 or 10

01:12:43searches by law enforcement of miss richards home is that right there were 10 search warrants issued

01:12:49yeah we have no murder weapon like you haven't found anything that was connected to eric's death no

01:12:57fentanyl in the house correct there was a boatload of fentanyl in his stomach that came out of the house

01:13:03with him if the lead detective couldn't point to any fentanyl in the house the defense argued maybe

01:13:08eric kept a secret stash in this old pill bottle what else do we find on that first day that

01:13:13eric

01:13:14died what else do they find the hydrocodone bottle why wasn't it tested what was kept in that bottle

01:13:23the painkiller was prescribed to eric six years earlier the defense asked the first detective on

01:13:28the scene about it wasn't there an empty hydrocodone bottle seized from right next to mr richard's bed

01:13:34there was you didn't put in an evidence bag no you didn't swab it for the inside of it no

01:13:42it was empty

01:13:42do you know where it is to this day no when it was time for the defense to put on

01:13:48its own witnesses

01:13:49corey's attorneys asked for a break we're all seated really on the edge of our seats in that courtroom

01:13:56anticipating that the defense will call witnesses then the jury heard this your honor after consulting

01:14:05with our client the defense rush i saw a lot of mouths dropped and eyebrows shot up and they stared

01:14:11at that defense table what did you make of the defense not calling any witnesses when you're the defense

01:14:18in trial everything is on the spot kind of game day decision how's it going and what do we do

01:14:24next

01:14:25and you have to calculate the risks not putting on witnesses is that going to hurt corey are we

01:14:31leaving them on a high note and have we been able to effectively cross-examine everyone in order to

01:14:37get the points we needed to make for her defense through the state's witnesses mr bloodworth would

01:14:42you like to proceed yes your honor we may proceed to a packed gallery both sides made their closing

01:14:47arguments all the evidence in this case proves that corey richards murdered her husband and the father

01:14:56of her three children eric's richards do not let them fool you do not fall for red herrings

01:15:03corey richards did not kill eric richards count one and with that the case went to the jury so i'm

01:15:10looking

01:15:11at corey and i said to the lady next to me i'm like i said she's shaking and she goes

01:15:15she's trembling

01:15:30after sitting side by side for three weeks the jurors tasked with deciding corey richards guilt or

01:15:36innocence began their deliberations we spoke with two of them mark and eric out of privacy concerns

01:15:43they asked us not to use their last names take us into that jury room i mean as soon as

01:15:49we got in

01:15:50the jury room we just all needed to sit down and take collective breaths and then after that we just

01:15:55started to say hey look we each are going to talk for five minutes about what we saw not necessarily

01:16:00is corey innocent or guilty but just what did your lens as a person see on this trial mark's front

01:16:08row

01:16:08seat in the jury box allowed him to keep close watch on the defense table did you keep an eye

01:16:13eye on corey richards expressions throughout the trial and how she was reacting to things

01:16:19i absolutely did for the most part um i think there was a a poker game that was being played

01:16:26the jurors were also glued to the testimony of key witness carmen lauber carmen the housekeeper tricky

01:16:33witness because she has this past with drugs she's in trouble herself and she's been given a bit of a

01:16:40life line here you know to help the prosecution i saw a woman who was making genuine efforts to

01:16:47get on the right path and improve her life and frankly her testimony combined with the digital

01:16:54evidence of her travels really corroborated her her testimony they felt for corey's former boyfriend josh

01:17:03too you know my heart bled for him he was having problems breathing he needed water i had such

01:17:09compassion for him especially being a veteran as for the defense do you think that was a mistake to

01:17:15not put on a formal defense and you know just try the case through cross-examination i don't think it

01:17:21was a mistake as much as their tactic and that was their right to do so juror eric thinks though

01:17:26the

01:17:27defense could have made more of the fact that no one knows for sure how eric richens ingested that

01:17:31fentanyl i think probably if they had focused on that then they may have gotten to reasonable doubt

01:17:39in the plus column for the defense a closing argument that tugged on this juror's heartstrings

01:17:45i was unexpectedly winnable and i was not much older than the corey and i had two rules

01:17:51how do you judge someone in that moment they want you to look at a woman in the worst moment

01:17:59of her life

01:18:01and to judge her grief there is no wrong way to grieve it was a plea for not sending a

01:18:08mom to jail

01:18:09who has three children and i understand that i was rooting that that but then i got back to

01:18:14deliberations and it was like wait a minute mark like take a deep breath stop focusing on the emotional

01:18:20element and every time i tried to give her a lifeline or an off-ramp off it just ended and

01:18:26it just pointed

01:18:26right back to her after only three hours the court is informed that the jury has reached the verdict

01:18:34the speed at which the jury came back was shocking to everyone we all quietly file into the courtroom

01:18:41and the judge makes it very clear that there is to be no outward reaction anybody in here can't follow

01:18:48these instructions this is your chance to leave i'm looking at cory and i said to the lady next to

01:18:53me i'm like i said she's shaking and she goes she's trembling and i looked down at her feet and

01:18:58they

01:18:58were shaking counsel miss richens please stand count one aggravated murder we the jury unanimously find

01:19:13that the defendant cory richens is guilty of aggravated murder

01:19:20count two attempted aggravated murder we the jury unanimously find that the defendant cory richens is

01:19:29guilty of attempted aggravated murder guilty guilty guilty guilty guilty and you just see cory just

01:19:36yeah her head goes down you could just read her face right she did a pretty good job throughout the

01:19:44whole trial having that poker face on but at that moment she looked down and her world came crashing

01:19:50down inside her head a look of defeat defeat i saw a broken woman but i think there's carnage everywhere

01:19:58it was shock i mean it was literally just shock you know my mother said cory did a good job

01:20:03that she just

01:20:04didn't break down there and i said well it's not a matter of breaking down i said it's just shock

01:20:08you

01:20:08don't know what to do i said and i felt the same thing she did for eric's family finally justice

01:20:16four years ago our family lost the brightest light eric is deeply loved and missed every single day

01:20:23we are grateful to everyone who has worked tirelessly to bring justice for eric

01:20:27our focus is now on honoring eric's life and supporting his boys as we all continue to heal

01:20:34thank you all for being here cory is scheduled to be sentenced next month she faces the possibility

01:20:41of 25 years to life behind bars she also has another criminal case pending with 26 additional

01:20:48financial charges she has not yet entered a plea her three boys are living with eric's family

01:20:55cory's book is out of print now but we did find it on ebay selling for more than five thousand

01:21:07back in the shadow of the wasatch mountains the midway mansion once a symbol of everything

01:21:13cory dreamed of now has new owners and renovations are well underway

01:21:21at the mirror lake diner gabe morin thinks about eric when someone orders his favorite chicken fried

01:21:27steak or sits in his usual seat you know i'm sad this whole situation happened but i think it's the

01:21:34right outcome he certainly never imagined the role his diner would play in cory richen's murder trial

01:21:41or that his friend's three sons would be left without a father eric was just a simple good guy

01:21:48you know and his kids don't have a dad you know and and i that's the part that hits me

01:21:53hard

01:21:55and you know and those kids will be okay eric taught them right they are smart strong kids they'll be

01:22:02okay
