00:05I'm sick.
00:06I may not die today,
00:08but it's coming, and there's nothing I can do
00:10to stop it. So how'd it feel?
00:11Staring down the barrel of a gun.
00:13Wish I could say I'd gotten used to it.
00:15Lennox, on the other hand, she didn't care if she got shot or not.
00:19You haven't really seemed
00:20like yourself recently.
00:21Is everything cool?
00:25It's not every day
00:25you find out your colleague was a
00:27teen heartthrob.
00:29My parents stole a lot of money
00:30from me. I worked basically my entire
00:32childhood, and I have nothing
00:34to show for it. Oh, man.
00:36I'm sorry.
00:45Sorry, man. I didn't
00:46realize anyone was in here. I just thought
00:48I left my phone charger in here yesterday.
00:50No, it's all good. My
00:52shift starts in a few minutes anyway, so...
00:56Wait, did you...
00:58Did you sleep here last night?
00:59What? No.
01:01I caught all the lights on the way in,
01:04so I thought I'd get a few extra minutes
01:06of shut-eye before my shift.
01:08Man, I wish I could fall asleep that fast.
01:11What can I say?
01:12We're not all born with a gift, right?
01:17People lie.
01:19People lie.
01:19They hide their true feelings, and sometimes they don't even know how to express those feelings.
01:24As psychiatrists, we are relying on our own personal assessments, which are riddled with mistakes and biases.
01:31And unlike other medical disciplines, we base our treatments on conversation and observation.
01:38Nothing more.
01:39Oh, come on.
01:41That's a bit of a reductive assessment of what we do, isn't it?
01:45But is it?
01:46What other tools do most psychiatrists employ?
01:49We use any number of clinical tools, but as aids to our initial assessment.
01:55I mean, it sounds like you're proposing that we lead with this stuff?
01:58You want me to let a machine tell me what's going on with my patient?
02:01No, I am proposing that we endeavor to give patients effective and efficient care.
02:09In a world where there is constant pressure to increase patient turnover rates, where there is so little time,
02:15we can rely on fMRI to help doctors instantly diagnose bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia,
02:23and we can push psychiatry into a true science where we replace the guesswork with hard facts.
02:29The guesswork?
02:30I'm only referring to certain types of...
02:33Right.
02:33Okay, look.
02:34First of all, from what I've read, fMRI, diagnostically speaking anyway, according to the statistics,
02:40it's just not there yet.
02:41But even if it was, a lot of the psych patients coming into my ED are experiencing their first episode.
02:48You know, their initial set of symptoms, and they're disoriented.
02:52Sometimes they're terrified.
02:54They don't even know their psych patients yet.
02:56And what they need in that moment, more than anything, is human contact.
03:01Right? Empathy? Compassion?
03:04I am not trying to challenge your methods.
03:08Trust me when I tell you that in addition to its efficiency, there is a tremendous amount of potential in
03:14this tech.
03:15And I would love nothing more than to continue my research right here at Gaffney with you.
03:22How we doing, Cora?
03:25Pretty good.
03:26She's coughing a lot.
03:28I'll order another albuterol nebulizer.
03:31That should help.
03:33Doing okay?
03:34I know the first few days in the isolator takes some getting used to.
03:38I keep thinking about this pet fish I had in kindergarten.
03:42Octavio.
03:43Yeah.
03:45I used to stare at him in his little fish bowl.
03:48Seems so cozy with his castle and treasure chest.
03:54Doesn't seem so cozy now.
03:59Look, I know it's not ideal, but this is the best way to keep you safe.
04:05Your immune deficiency disorder means that your body can't protect itself from infection.
04:10Inside the fish bowl, no germs can get in.
04:13So all you have to worry about is getting better.
04:17Okay.
04:18I mean, plus, it doesn't feel cozy in there because you haven't done any decorating yet.
04:24Decorating?
04:24Yeah.
04:26I mean, I'm thinking some curtains in here, maybe a few Blackpink posters, huh?
04:32You're being sarcastic.
04:35Maybe a little.
04:36But it doesn't mean we can't find ways to make you feel more at home, okay?
04:40So how about we both think on it?
04:42Okay.
04:43Okay.
04:54She's getting worse, isn't she?
04:56Her blood pressure is dropping and lactate is rising, which are markers for sepsis.
05:01But the only thing that's going to make her better in the long term is a stem cell transplant.
05:05Any word on the test results?
05:07There's nothing from the registry.
05:09And your test results aren't back yet, but I will let you know as soon as I hear.
05:13But if I am a match with Cora, how soon can we do the stem cell transplant?
05:16And hopefully within hours.
05:21I don't understand how this happened so fast.
05:23She was such a healthy girl, and then suddenly these past few months...
05:29When I decided to have her on my own through IVF, I was so scared.
05:35But then she arrived, and all the worry went away because she was perfect.
05:41And we were perfect.
05:44Just the two of us.
05:52Help!
05:53Someone!
05:54What's going on?
05:55They said to bring it.
05:56I kept it cold.
05:58Oh my God!
05:59What is it?
06:03Lionel Blake, 37-year-old male.
06:05Left hand severed off in a circular saw accident at a shop.
06:07Heart rate's 126.
06:09BP's 95 over 54.
06:10Coworker found him.
06:11Use his belt as a tourniquet until we got there.
06:12Complete amputation.
06:13How much blood was there at the sink?
06:15A lot.
06:15And we got the hand.
06:16All right.
06:17We'll get it in a sterile bag.
06:18Okay, I'm on it.
06:19All right.
06:20On my count.
06:22Mm-hmm.
06:23Ready?
06:23One, two, three.
06:25Oh!
06:26Oh, it hurts.
06:27100-microfentanyl.
06:28Let's get a cardiomonitor and oxygen, and let's get another IV and hang a unit of...
06:33Oh, negative.
06:34Got it.
06:34All right.
06:35You are going to surgery, Mr. Blake.
06:37Page hand and vascular, please.
06:39You need help getting this hand reattached.
06:40Wait.
06:41No, no, no.
06:41Lie back down, sir.
06:42Lie back down.
06:42You need to let me go.
06:44Blake, come on now.
06:45You don't understand.
06:46What don't I understand, sir?
06:47I don't want it reattached.
06:49Excuse me?
06:49I cut it off on purpose.
07:05So it's a no on the reattachment.
07:07Yeah, a hard no.
07:09They won't engage much beyond that.
07:11Some kind of woodworker?
07:13Makes high-end furniture.
07:15The guy that brought them in said that they're working together here to...
07:20shriek, he ran in, found him in a pool of blood.
07:23Any mental illness in here?
07:25No, no.
07:26Nothing in his chart.
07:28Could this be...
07:30What was that called?
07:31You know, when a person wants to remove their healthy limbs?
07:35What is that?
07:36Oh, body integrity identity disorder?
07:38I mean, it could be.
07:39It's hard to say without talking to him.
07:40Well, we've got less than an hour before the hand dies from lack of circulation.
07:44Oh, man.
07:46Okay.
07:48Just squeeze my hand if it hurts.
07:49It's not too bad.
07:50Okay.
07:51You okay?
07:52Yeah.
07:54Oh, I'm fine.
07:56Just do her first.
07:56I'd really like to take a look at the arm, Mr. Carter.
07:59Yeah, when the kettle exploded in the kitchen, we both thought a bomb went off.
08:02I guess the water was too hot, or...?
08:04No, it wasn't water.
08:06It was just a cheap-ass wedding gift for my Uncle Benny.
08:08Everything the dude buys is a knockoff of a knockoff.
08:12Of a knockoff.
08:13These look like superficial partial thickness burns.
08:16Let's do a gentle irrigation with some cool water, and then we'll need to apply some silvadine.
08:20And a suture kit for that lack.
08:23You okay?
08:24What's hurting?
08:25Hey, babe, you all right?
08:26Yeah, I'm sorry.
08:27I think the skin's just a little bit tender.
08:30Okay.
08:30Well, let's get you gowned and sutured and bandaged.
08:33I want to do an x-ray to make sure there's no glass that we missed and some basic blood
08:36and urine tests.
08:37Can I have a nurse help you in the bathroom?
08:38Oh, no, I'm okay.
08:39I can do it.
08:40Okay.
08:41And, uh, no more gifts from Uncle Benny.
08:44I was doing a little, uh, internet snooping on your shop.
08:48It's some beautiful furniture you make.
08:52No wonder demand is so high right now.
08:54I mean, those...
08:55Those Windsor chairs with the, uh, with the blonde sugar maple, you know?
09:00The mortise and tenon joints, that's impressive.
09:04Like a magic chair.
09:05Yeah.
09:09But I tell you, one thing that I can't really figure out is why a guy who's as talented as
09:15you are
09:15would want to get rid of one of your most important tools.
09:23It's better for everyone.
09:26For everyone?
09:27What do you mean when you say everyone?
09:29I'm a bad person.
09:32I'm gonna hurt someone.
09:35Have you hurt somebody before?
09:37No.
09:39Well, what makes you think you would now?
09:42I could control it before.
09:48Control what?
09:50I keep picturing the same thing.
09:55Over and over.
09:59Okay.
10:00Well, what is it that you keep on picturing?
10:04Wrapping my head around someone's throat.
10:08Killing them.
10:11And I was gonna do it.
10:14I was gonna hurt someone.
10:21No, I can't.
10:29Hey, crazy question.
10:30Do we have any glitter glue?
10:31Why, are you going to a slumber party we don't know about?
10:34No, I'm just getting some supplies for Cora,
10:37so she can spruce the place up a little bit.
10:38How are you still single?
10:41Commitment issues.
10:43Excited to unpack that tomorrow night at your place.
10:46Sorry, what?
10:47She means poker night.
10:49It's tomorrow.
10:50You're hosting.
10:51Sorry, I can't do that, actually.
10:53I'm gonna have to rent check.
10:54What?
10:56Something came up.
10:57You can't bail on us.
10:58Your bad decisions at poker night
10:59paid for my manicures last month.
11:01I just can't.
11:02Okay?
11:03Okay.
11:04Okay.
11:05Dr. Frost, this just came up from pathology
11:07for Cora Cooper.
11:11Whoa, whoa, whoa.
11:11This is for Cora Cooper.
11:13Are you sure?
11:14Yeah.
11:14That's what they said.
11:18She's not my daughter.
11:22How is this possible?
11:23You mentioned to Dr. Frost
11:25that you conceived Cora through IVF.
11:28You think there was a mix-up at the clinic?
11:30Well, it's possible.
11:32We've been in touch with them.
11:34It looks like ten years ago,
11:37on the day Cora's embryo was transferred,
11:39there was one other woman who received an embryo,
11:42though hers didn't take.
11:45Are you saying that Cora is her biological child?
11:48We just don't know yet.
11:50These answers will take time.
11:52But if this woman is Cora's genetic parent,
11:56then there's a 25% chance she is a match
11:59for the stem cell transplant needed to save Cora's life.
12:04So, do we have your permission to contact her
12:07to see if she'll come in to get tested?
12:16So, you're saying that he's got OCD?
12:18Most people think that OCD is just about, you know,
12:22repetitive hand-watching,
12:23light-switch behavior,
12:25but at its heart are these intrusive thoughts, right,
12:29that compel people to behave a certain way.
12:32In Lionel's case,
12:34they revolve around hurting people.
12:36It's actually a very specific subset,
12:38which is harm OCD.
12:40Trust me, he's got all the hallmarks.
12:42That explains why he's not mentioned it to anybody.
12:45Well, it's a tough thing to admit to, right?
12:47Yeah.
12:47But, I mean, the lengths that he went to,
12:49cutting off his own hand,
12:51I mean, the guy didn't want to hurt anybody.
12:52Yeah.
12:53Right?
12:54We all have violent impulses, right?
12:57But we have the ability to filter them out.
13:00Poor guy thinks he's a killer
13:02and really just got a leaky valve.
13:06Mm-hmm.
13:07Well, like, we could just show him the valve, right?
13:09Yeah.
13:11No, you know.
13:13But we could just show him the busted part,
13:14just like we could do with broken bones,
13:16and get him to understand that
13:18that's not who he really is.
13:20Right?
13:23Any way you could keep this hand alive
13:26for a little bit longer?
13:28Yeah, I'll consult Lennox.
13:29I'd appreciate it, buddy.
13:30Just, uh,
13:33need to run something down.
13:33Of course.
13:37How much time do you think this will buy?
13:39Well, in a lab setting,
13:41a perfusion system has kept a limb viable
13:43for up to 24 hours,
13:45but given that this isn't a lab setting,
13:47and we're doing most of this on the fly,
13:49I'd say considerably less than that.
13:52Did you ever reattach any limbs
13:54while you're in Afghanistan?
13:56I mostly cut them off.
14:00It's hard to imagine anybody doing this to themselves on purpose.
14:05Maybe.
14:07But I can understand wanting to deny your own impulses.
14:10I spent most of my life doing that.
14:12Why do you think that is?
14:17I guess I didn't really understand the world or how I was supposed to act
14:24or what was acceptable or cool or kind,
14:28and to avoid making a mistake,
14:31I just didn't take any chances.
14:35And I'm starting to think that
14:37that stopped me from experiencing life fully.
14:42If I had a better self-control,
14:44I wouldn't be having a baby right now, so...
14:47Maybe losing control occasionally
14:49isn't the worst thing in the world.
14:55Sorry, Dr. Lennox.
14:56I wanted to...
14:58I was in the bathroom
14:59collecting the urine sample
15:01from the woman who had the kettle accident.
15:03Mrs. Carter, I guess.
15:06Well, she'd asked for a second cup to use,
15:08and I didn't think anything of it
15:10until I went in there
15:11and I found the original cup in the trash.
15:15It had this on it.
15:19You all right?
15:21Yeah, just...
15:22This is so weird.
15:24Miss Patrick, this is Vivian Cooper and Dr. Frost,
15:27who's running point on Cora's care.
15:30It's nice to meet you.
15:31Thank you so much for coming down here so quickly.
15:34It's a lot.
15:35No, of course.
15:36I...
15:40Sorry, what happens now?
15:42Well, the first thing we need to do
15:43is a blood draw, which is right down the hole.
15:44Okay.
15:45And we should be able to get back the result
15:47within a couple hours.
15:49Is that her?
15:54Yes.
15:56Can I meet her?
15:59Well, I haven't told Cora about all this yet.
16:01I didn't want to upset her until we knew for sure.
16:06Oh.
16:07Why don't we do the blood test to start?
16:11Right, of course.
16:12It's just...
16:14Afterward, I really...
16:18I would love to meet her.
16:22We don't even have to tell her who I am.
16:24I don't know.
16:27I'm sorry, but that might be my biological child in there,
16:31and she's sick.
16:34Please.
16:44It will be.
16:45Dr. Ripley, you have a second?
16:47Uh, not exactly.
16:48Well, I was wondering
16:49if you've noticed anything off with Dr. Frost.
16:53What do you mean?
16:54Like he's acting kind of weird.
16:56You know?
16:57Cagey.
16:59He totally bailed on hosting Poker Night,
17:02and he's, like,
17:04dropping out of stuff randomly.
17:10I think it might be meth.
17:14Meth?
17:14Yeah.
17:15I've seen it before.
17:17Mm-hmm.
17:18Casey, um,
17:20Dr. Frost does not have a methamphetamine addiction.
17:23But he is acting weird.
17:26Maybe.
17:27Um, I need to go deal with something.
17:29Let's talk later.
17:34Hey, man, can I, uh,
17:35can I grab you for a sec?
17:37Yeah, what's up?
17:38Oh, admin.
17:39Uh, they can't seem to find your insurance info.
17:41Just need you to fill out a few forms.
17:42It's a pain, I know, but...
17:43No, it's fine.
17:45We're just waiting around.
17:53Faye, can we talk?
17:55Sure.
17:56Everything okay?
17:57Uh, just waiting on your lab results.
17:59But that's not what I came by.
18:03You got married recently, right?
18:05Almost seven months ago, but yeah.
18:08How's it going?
18:11Good.
18:12What do you mean?
18:13I guess I mean, um,
18:16how are you guys getting along?
18:18Sorry, why are you asking this?
18:24We found this in the trash.
18:26The red sticker on it.
18:29I'm sorry, I don't understand what's that supposed to mean.
18:32We have signs up in the bathroom that say
18:35if you're experiencing partner abuse
18:38or domestic violence
18:40that you can place a sticker on your cup
18:42to notify us.
18:45But I didn't turn that one in.
18:47I understand.
18:50I'm wondering if you are considering asking us for help.
18:56I want to make sure everything's okay
18:59and nothing you say to me is going to leave this room.
19:04I don't know.
19:05I'm sorry.
19:06I just said...
19:08Can we talk about the kettle?
19:11I told you it...
19:13It was an accident.
19:15It just exploded.
19:18But is that what happened?
19:20Did he hit you with it?
19:26It was an argument.
19:29We're both hot-tempered.
19:30I just don't want to get him in trouble.
19:32This isn't about getting anybody in trouble.
19:35This is about making sure you're safe.
19:37Please don't.
19:39We have resources we can provide.
19:41We have a social worker
19:42who can connect to the same housing.
19:45Please.
19:46Faye?
19:48A little help in here.
19:50Please, mom.
19:50She's losing consciousness.
19:51Let's get her on a monitor.
19:52Faye, can you hear me?
19:55Please don't.
20:00Faye, I'll give you an oxygen mask
20:02to help you breathe, okay?
20:03She's really diaphoretic.
20:04I'm going to need some tape.
20:05Here we go.
20:07Just breathe.
20:08We got you.
20:10Dr. Lennox,
20:11you need to see this.
20:13Oh, my God.
20:23Dr. Abari.
20:24Hey.
20:25Here a minute.
20:26You come to arrest me?
20:28Look, I got out a little heated this morning,
20:30and I apologize for that,
20:32but I'm wondering if I could ask for your help with something.
20:35Sure.
20:36What do you got?
20:37Under a bit of a time crunch.
20:38Can I explain on the way?
20:39Yeah.
20:41Bolus and blood seem to have helped.
20:43Vitals are stable.
20:44Tell Transpo she's ready to move to IR.
20:47Hey, her husband's in the waiting room.
20:49I've been holding him off,
20:50but he wants to know what's going on.
20:51He knows exactly what's going on.
20:53He beat the hell out of her.
20:56He may be next of kin,
20:57but the fact that we have to treat this prick
20:58like he's any other family member is absurd.
21:01I get that,
21:02but if we let on what we know,
21:03we would feign even more danger.
21:04Yeah, I get that.
21:16Is Faye okay?
21:17Your wife suffered a laceration to her spleen,
21:19causing her to hemorrhage slowly into her abdomen.
21:22We are doing something called
21:23a splenic artery embolization
21:25to stop the bleeding.
21:26But she's going to be okay.
21:28We hope so, yes.
21:30Okay.
21:31Thank God.
21:33Sorry, I'm a little confused, though.
21:35She was fine when I left what happened.
21:37Well, that's what we were hoping
21:39that you could help us with.
21:41Generally, it's the kind of injury
21:42that only occurs with blunt trauma,
21:44but Faye didn't mention anything like that.
21:47Any idea what might have happened?
21:51I mean, when the kettle exploded,
21:53she did fall.
21:55Hit the counter.
21:57In the chaos, we must have forgot to mention it.
22:00She fell.
22:02Right.
22:03So, that's all.
22:05Can't think of anything else?
22:07No.
22:08We're asking because we just want to make sure,
22:10you know, we have a clear picture
22:12and there's nothing we're missing.
22:13Right.
22:14Of course.
22:17Uh, yeah.
22:19Nothing else that I know of.
22:22All right, Lionel.
22:24We're going to get started.
22:27First, we're going to warm up the machine a bit,
22:29so if you could tap your index fingers to your thumbs.
22:32I mean, with your right hand, of course.
22:38Colors represent the parts of the brain that are active.
22:42And your research is centered on this?
22:45Yeah.
22:45We compare what we're seeing in a given patient
22:47to a healthy brain,
22:49and the differences will help tell us what we're dealing with.
22:53Okay.
22:54But Dr. Charles has already diagnosed Mr. Blake.
22:57He just didn't believe it.
22:58Well, we're kind of conducting an experiment
23:01and, um, repurposing the technology
23:04in an attempt to show Lionel,
23:07per your suggestion, his leaky valve.
23:10Okay.
23:11We're ready.
23:14Okay, Lionel.
23:15I want you to shut your eyes
23:19and picture standing right in front of you
23:21the person that you care about,
23:24that you love most in the world.
23:30Okay.
23:31Now, I want you to imagine taking your hands,
23:34wrapping them around your throat,
23:37and strangling them.
23:53Hey, Cora.
23:55Decorating's coming along nicely.
23:57Right.
23:58Except I'm running out of blue marker.
24:00Oh, we can taste that.
24:02You didn't touch your lunch.
24:04I'm hungry.
24:06Well, you gotta eat.
24:07Keep your strength up, okay?
24:08I'll try.
24:10Cora, I'd like to introduce you to a friend of mine.
24:12This is Lily.
24:13She's shadowing me today.
24:15Hey.
24:17Nice zebra.
24:18Cora.
24:19Thanks.
24:19Thanks.
24:19It's actually randomly my favorite animal.
24:23Hey, Cora, I think we should put your cannula back on, okay?
24:26Oxygen levels are dipping a little bit.
24:28I wanted to do this trip to Africa last summer, but we couldn't afford it, so my mom wrote
24:34an email to the zoo and convinced them to let me come and feed them.
24:38Sounds cool.
24:39Well, she has a black streak in her hair.
24:45I've had it since I was a baby.
24:47It's pretty rare, I think.
24:49Yeah, no, I know.
24:50My mom had the exact same thing.
24:54You're my daughter.
24:58What are you doing?
24:59I think we should step out, maybe.
25:01She's my daughter.
25:01I'm sorry, but I'm sure of it.
25:07You are way out of line.
25:09Ladies.
25:09I didn't mean to say it.
25:10We don't even know if you are.
25:12We do know, and I know you can see it.
25:14Can we just calm down?
25:15I don't want her anywhere near my daughter.
25:17She's my daughter, too.
25:18I have rights.
25:19Is this crazy?
25:20I don't want this anymore.
25:22Let's wait for the marrow registry results.
25:24Stop her blood test.
25:24No, we're not stopping it.
25:26Then I'm going to call a lawyer.
25:27All right, it's enough.
25:28Look, I understand that emotions are running high
25:32and that this is a very unusual situation.
25:35I can't imagine what you're going through right now,
25:39and you either.
25:40You both must be reeling.
25:43So, Miss Cooper, you can call a lawyer,
25:46and I promise you I would understand.
25:49As hard as this is, that's not the best thing
25:53for your daughter right now.
25:58Of course.
26:01OK, look.
26:02There is no closing this Pandora's box.
26:07So if you both care for Cora, we need to put her first.
26:25How are you doing after that ambulizer?
26:28You feeling a little shaky?
26:30No, I'm OK.
26:36Dr. Frost?
26:38That woman?
26:42Can she take me away from her, Mom?
26:47I wish I could tell you what was going to happen, Cora,
26:50but I can't.
26:53What I can tell you is that family has nothing to do
26:57with genetics or blood.
26:59It's about who loves you and who shows up.
27:06Is that what your parents were like?
27:11No.
27:12Actually, mine weren't always very good to me.
27:16They weren't always putting me first, you know?
27:23But your mom, she's nothing like that.
27:27All she does is think about you
27:30and how best to take care of you
27:32and that kind of love.
27:38She's going to be your mom
27:41no matter what any test says.
27:43All right?
27:47I guess I'm just scared.
27:51I know.
27:55But hey.
27:58We're in this together, all right?
28:03I got you.
28:08This is a picture of your brain
28:10after we asked you to think of somebody you cared about.
28:15My sister?
28:16My sister.
28:17See this red area here?
28:18That's called the ventral tegmental area.
28:21It's a part of your brain
28:22that processes love and reward.
28:25And it's where you hold your personal values.
28:28You see how it's all lit up
28:30when you're thinking about your sister?
28:32Yeah.
28:33Okay, good.
28:34Now, this is a picture of your brain
28:37after we asked you to think about hurting her.
28:40Now, see, amygdala?
28:41It's where your brain processes fear.
28:43Okay, now, buddy.
28:45If you were somebody who enjoyed hurting people,
28:47your brain would not look like this
28:49after confiding with those triggers.
28:51Okay?
28:52It would, in fact, look like this.
28:55Because you'd be experiencing joy and pleasure
28:58in anticipation of hurting somebody.
29:01Now, a really cool part
29:03is to actually show you why this is happening.
29:06See this little area here?
29:08This is called your caudate nucleus.
29:12It's dark.
29:13Yeah, because yours isn't working.
29:15And that's all this is.
29:17It's what I've been trying to tell you.
29:18This little tiny part of your brain is malfunctioning.
29:21Maybe.
29:22I don't know.
29:22Buddy, look.
29:25This is you.
29:27It's the guy who deserves to be made whole again.
29:32Lionel, I know you feel unsafe, okay?
29:35And that's terrible.
29:38But we can fix that.
29:40Look, it's not going to happen overnight, okay?
29:43But I promise you,
29:45when we get to where we're going,
29:47you're going to want your hand back.
29:48So you're going to keep doing what you love doing.
29:50The problem is, buddy,
29:51is that we are up against it right now.
29:54All right?
29:55So in this moment,
29:56I just...
29:57I need you to trust me.
29:59Okay, I need you to trust me,
30:01and I just...
30:02I need you to trust...
30:04this science.
30:09Okay.
30:12Okay?
30:18How are you feeling?
30:20Groggy.
30:21A little sore.
30:23What happened?
30:25You had a lacerated spleen.
30:27We embolized the artery
30:29that was bleeding into your abdomen.
30:30You should be okay.
30:32But it could have killed you.
30:36There was a moment earlier today
30:38when you were alone in the bathroom.
30:40You had an impulse to reach out,
30:43ask for help.
30:45You should listen to that.
30:47Yeah.
30:49Yeah.
30:54You must think I'm so stupid
30:56for loving someone who could do this.
30:59I don't think that at all.
31:04It's just...
31:07He's not always like this.
31:12I believe you.
31:15But situations like this
31:16don't just get better.
31:18Not without help.
31:23I took this out of your bag.
31:27I put my number in it.
31:29It's under Katie with a C.
31:34Yeah, thanks.
31:38But really, I'm fine.
31:41It was just a mix-up.
31:47I just need it today.
31:50No, I don't care about the money.
31:52No, text me his number.
31:53I'll cut him a check today.
31:56Is this really how this goes?
31:58Let me call you back.
32:00Excuse me?
32:01I get that you might feel upset right now
32:04and that you might feel cheated,
32:06but that little girl in there is dying.
32:08And she's not going to spend
32:09whatever time she has left
32:10terrified that the only family she knows
32:12is about to get torn apart.
32:15You don't get it.
32:17I don't?
32:18No.
32:23I did IVF for years.
32:29So many times I got pregnant.
32:33But the embryo...
32:38My body couldn't keep it alive.
32:44And this happens...
32:46that this little girl is mine.
32:51I've already missed so much.
32:55So I can't just walk away.
33:03Look, infertility is cruel.
33:05We never get to know why one person gets lucky
33:07while the other one does it.
33:08I can imagine that in a situation like this,
33:11it is easy to feel like you've been robbed
33:14of something and maybe you have.
33:17But I...
33:18What?
33:20I don't know.
33:21Maybe this is the only way this could have happened.
33:24You having a kid.
33:26Maybe Cora wouldn't even be here
33:27if it weren't for the both of you.
33:29Okay, but either way,
33:31Cora is in a crisis right now.
33:34And I know
33:35that the only way to get through a crisis
33:37is to find a way to work together.
33:50What is it?
33:52Pathology.
33:53Your test results are back.
34:02Cora.
34:05Cora.
34:08Cora.
34:14What's wrong?
34:15Nothing's wrong, baby.
34:17It's good news.
34:19You and Miss Patrick,
34:21you're a stem cell match.
34:24Really?
34:25Really, yeah.
34:27You're going to be feeling a lot better very soon.
34:32You're going to be okay, sweetie.
34:33You're going to be okay.
34:39I'm going to be okay.
34:39I'm so happy I meant you.
34:42She's my biological.
34:47Yeah.
34:51Where is she?
34:54Mrs. Patrick is getting ready to make her stem cell donation.
34:58And she thought it best for you two to have your space right now.
35:13Yeah.
35:15Hey.
35:17I'm headed out. I wanted to check on Lionel. How's he doing?
35:20Uh, you know, Dean's just finishing up now. Come in. Have a seat.
35:25He was able to keep the hand viable,
35:27so it looks like the reattachment's gonna be a success.
35:33I'm glad to hear it.
35:35It's cool what you did back there.
35:37I haven't used FMR like that.
35:39Hey, look, I am not anti-innovation, okay? Far from it, trust me.
35:42But it just seems like every day we get hit with another technological advancement
35:47that further obliterates our need to connect as humans.
35:50You know, we might have gotten off on the wrong foot,
35:52but I enjoyed working with you today.
35:56Right back at you. Really.
36:01Theo, um...
36:03I've been thinking...
36:05You cannot deny the potential of this technology, right?
36:09I mean, look at what happened today.
36:12And...
36:14Look, if you were willing to put people before technology,
36:21maybe there is a place for you in your research.
36:24You're a Gaffney.
36:27Hmm.
36:29What do you think?
36:30Yeah.
36:33It's this way.
36:34They'll just need you to change into a gown,
36:36and then we'll get you to pre-op.
36:38And how long does the procedure take?
36:40Usually one or two hours.
36:42Okay.
36:43Lily, I just wanted to say thank you in person.
36:46It means...
36:49It's everything.
36:50Of course.
36:53Um...
36:54I tried to get a zebra from the gift shop for Cora.
36:59All they had was a bear.
37:01Probably stupid.
37:02I don't even know if ten-year-olds like stuffed animals.
37:06I guess I don't really know that much about kids.
37:11She'll love it.
37:15I'm sorry about earlier.
37:17It wasn't my best moment.
37:20No, it wasn't.
37:23You know, Cora asked about you.
37:26She has questions I can't answer.
37:29Maybe we can have another conversation with the three of us later,
37:33under better circumstances.
37:36Yeah?
37:38Yeah.
37:45Bubba's looking pretty good.
37:46It's too bad we're gonna have to kick you out of here soon.
37:49I made you something.
37:51Oh, yeah? What's that?
37:54That's me.
37:56That's you.
37:58You put me in the fishbowl?
37:59You said that we were in it together.
38:02Thought maybe you could hang it up in your house.
38:11You like it?
38:13Yeah.
38:15I love it.
38:17So Faye got moved to the ICU?
38:19Mm-hmm.
38:24Look, you did everything you could.
38:28Right.
38:31Oh.
38:32What?
38:33I left my iPad in post-op.
38:36Want me to hold the elevator?
38:37I'll get the next one.
38:49Casey thinks you're on meth.
38:52What?
38:53Nurse Casey.
38:54She thinks you're acting weird because you're on meth.
38:57Oh.
38:57I'm not on meth.
39:00I know.
39:02But you are acting weird.
39:04I'm not trying to.
39:05I'm just tired, I guess.
39:11Okay.
39:19I got kicked out of my sublet.
39:22What's that?
39:23My apartment.
39:25I sublet it.
39:26And two days ago, the guy that I sublet it from
39:28decided to move back, kicked me out.
39:32So, you were right.
39:34I did sleep here last night
39:36because I don't have a place to live.
39:41That sucks, but can't you just get another apartment?
39:44No, it's not that simple.
39:45Well, if you need cash, I'm more than happy to...
39:47No, it's not a money thing, really.
39:49It's a credit thing.
39:51I had to file bankruptcy to get out
39:53from under all the debts my parents racked up.
39:55So, that's why I always sublet.
39:58It's just hard to find one on short notice, so.
40:05Well, why don't you just come stay with me, then?
40:09Just until you find a place for me?
40:10Wait, sir, I appreciate it.
40:11All right, I am fine.
40:13I'm at Sadie's half the time anyway.
40:18Okay, then.
40:20Okay.
40:21All right.
40:25There's no meth in the apartment.
40:26I'll just keep doing it in the hospital.
40:28All right, I'll be all right.
40:29Yeah.
40:38Dr. Lennox.
40:40Oh, hey.
40:41Faye was moved to the ICU.
40:42I know.
40:43I was looking for you, actually.
40:45I just wanted to say thank you for saving her life.
40:48I really appreciate it.
40:51I know how much attention you paid to her.
40:58Well, I wish I could have done more.
41:00I know how much evidence is for you.
41:30I know how much evidence is for you.
