00:12The victim was walking to the bus stop, the gunman came out, shot him, and then took off running back
00:17toward the apartment where he lived.
00:19The route to the location is going to be here. Once that door is free, deploy at 25. The target
00:25location is deep, apartment deep.
00:35Let's load up. Let's go. Let's go.
01:00Let's go.
01:23Let's go.
01:47Let's go.
01:53Let's go.
01:55Let's go.
01:56Let's go.
01:58When he was laying on that ground out there, I was looking for his mom or brother or sister or
02:03somebody.
02:04You know, boy laying on the ground, you know, nobody even claiming might put, you know? That's trash.
02:11It looks like the kid was in his school uniform. It's really sad. You know, he's either walking to the
02:17bus stop or walking to the school.
02:19He got 380 casings on the scene. Detective Ryan Oakwood made a witness. He's going to go ahead and conduct
02:27an interview up at the office.
02:32Detective Ryan Oakwood is the lead detective assigned to the case.
02:38We located somebody that has some information that's pertinent to the investigation.
02:41So, I'll be heading up to the office now to go talk to this guy.
02:45When I hear something about a high school student that's killed, it hits home a little bit for me.
02:49Because I mentor at-risk youths, kids that are in high school or middle school.
02:54Being in homicide, you know, one of my biggest fears was always to walk up on the scene not knowing
02:58who my victim was
02:59and then have it be one of those kids that I was teaching, you know?
03:12I just got him a bottle of water. He's in there chilling.
03:14Okay. Is somebody talking to him right now?
03:16No, no. We held up.
03:17Okay.
03:17Sorry, I said you wanted to talk to him.
03:19Yeah, yeah, yeah. Is this an interview from one?
03:20Yes.
03:23Hey, good morning. How you making up?
03:26I'm Detective Oakwood, Ryan Oakwood.
03:30I'm the lead investigator for the case.
03:33Do you know the victim?
03:34Yeah, I'm a very close friend.
03:37So, just kind of give me a brief run-through of what you know.
03:39All right.
03:41I look at the bus driver.
03:42My boy named Kareem walked up.
03:44He pulled me to the side.
03:46And he was like, you know what told me? You know what told me?
03:48The witness says Kareem was looking for the victim.
03:52I was like, I don't know the window here behind right now.
03:55I was like, why?
03:57He didn't show up there.
04:00He was like, man, I was about to smoke.
04:03I see you for real.
04:05But yeah, real life.
04:08I don't know why he was like, he was controlling a little.
04:11Like, game controller.
04:13This is all about the game controller.
04:16Probably won't remember.
04:17That's what he told me.
04:24The game drew about $6,000 or something now.
04:26He says the suspect lent the victim the Xbox controller about a month ago.
04:32Okay.
04:33He said that every time they go, they get back.
04:35He obviously does not move at somebody else's house or whatever.
04:39I'm just trying to figure out the mentality behind that.
04:44Did he tell you that that's why he was going to smoke one?
04:47Yeah.
04:48He said he probably stole my controller for money and everything.
04:51And he showed me a gun and he was like, when I see him, I'm going to kill him.
04:56And that was it.
04:58And the bus came.
04:59He walked it off.
05:02He told me this boy, it's crazy.
05:04He didn't do it.
05:05It's crazy.
05:07All right.
05:08Which way did he walk off?
05:09Back to football.
05:11Do you remember what time you got on the bus?
05:13I got on the bus for my life.
05:157 and 4.
05:17He's been at the opposite of my file card waiting for the bus stop.
05:21Do you know where Victor lives?
05:23Yeah.
05:23The witness says the first time he walked off.
05:24The victim was staying in the apartment complex near where he was shot.
05:29Kareem, you're back there too.
05:32Back there.
05:33Give me a minute.
05:46So at this point, this is our suspect, Kareem Richards.
05:50Kareem is 19 years old.
05:53The motive to an Xbox controller.
05:55I mean, it's kind of hard to wrap my head around that.
05:58We're going to make a line-up with him.
06:00Show him to the witness and see if he can ID him.
06:09All right.
06:10And then we got a line-up.
06:18We have enough probable cause that if this guy's identified, he's going to be the shooter.
06:21I mean, he had the motive.
06:22He had the gun.
06:23He has a very small window.
06:25Time frame window.
06:27Because he says he gets on the bus at like 7.40.
06:29And the commander says he gets the first call at 7.46.
06:32I mean, if this guy is the shooter, I want to get him off the street as soon as possible.
06:42I'm going to show you six photographs.
06:44Look at each picture and see if you recognize anyone.
06:54Here's your one.
06:55Hmm.
06:57You sure?
06:58Okay.
06:59And who is that to you?
07:01Just Kareem.
07:03All right.
07:04Got the ID to him.
07:05Got him.
07:11We obtained a warrant for the suspect.
07:13So, we're going to do an arrest and search warrant on his residence.
07:16and see if we can't locate him and locate some evidence.
07:19Every single emotion that I think a human being can feel
07:22happens at this point, at least for me.
07:25You know, I'm excited about it, I'm happy, I'm sad, I'm scared.
07:30Let's go!
07:51We're waiting for him to give a code 4, which means everything's secure.
07:59Code 4 in the car, construction, and one inside.
08:03One inside, so it's empty.
08:09In search of the apartment, we found the suspect's driver's license.
08:13We found a .380 caliber bullet on the coffee table.
08:17So that's significant in the fact that a .380 caliber handgun
08:20was used on the murder today.
08:22Hey, I'm doing Detective Oakley.
08:24When was the last time you seen Kareem?
08:26Day before yesterday.
08:28You talked to him on the phone at all?
08:29No, I've been calling him all day today.
08:32Why you was trying to call him?
08:33Because they said something was going on back then.
08:34I was trying to make sure he was okay.
08:36He's got a warrant off for his arrest, so we came here tonight looking for him.
08:39For what?
08:40For second-degree murder.
08:41Oh, no.
08:42The best thing at this point, if you do have contact with him,
08:45is tell him to come turn himself in.
08:48We don't want the SWAT team going to your mom,
08:50tell us your dad, tell us your sister,
08:52it's important that he comes and talks to us.
08:55I promise you, as soon as I get him, he's coming straight to you.
09:01I'm disappointed that we didn't get him.
09:03I felt strongly that this was going to be the location where he was at.
09:06We'll continue looking for him.
09:08The warrant for the warrant, so I'll be looking for him in the morning.
09:10We'll go back to the office at this point, get that warrant on file.
09:12So that way, if anybody stops him, he's popping up as being wanted at this point.
09:29Kareem Richards was able to elude us for about 23 months.
09:33Finally, he turned himself in, so he's in custody now.
09:38He wanted to tell his side of the story, but he didn't end up confessing.
09:43But, you know, witness statements and everything we got
09:46led us to Kareem as the perpetrator.
09:50He didn't deny the fact that he was having a disagreement,
09:53more the fact that it was an Xbox controller.
09:55He denied shooting him, but he did tell us that he wanted to hurt him.
09:59I spoke to the family, and they were relieved that he's off the street,
10:03going to get some resolution by bringing it to court.
10:06When I was a kid, if, you know, somebody borrowed something from you
10:08and they refused to return it, I mean, maybe you'd have a fistfight, maybe.
10:14But to resort to taking a gun and shooting somebody multiple times,
10:17I can't fathom that.
10:47You want me to stop for the 111?
10:49You want a lady damning on my back window.
10:52She ain't got no clothes on, ma'am.
10:56She said it. Somebody got shot.
10:59That boy's bringing me out.
11:12Yeah, our victim was shot in the back.
11:14By the time EMS arrived at the location, he was pronounced deceased.
11:19The 34-year-old father was found in the entryway.
11:23He had been shot 10 times in the torso and the head.
11:28There was a female witness inside the residence at the time of the shooting.
11:32And Ryan's going to talk to her and see if she'll give up what happened.
11:39What do you think we can to try and solve this thing?
11:43Take me back to the very beginning.
11:45We were together in my house.
11:49Who?
11:49My boyfriend.
11:53He was like, maybe he won't take a bath.
11:55He saw him that lady in the room.
11:58He had a lock at the door.
12:01And when he opened the door,
12:05we have lost his search.
12:08She says their friend Wayne came in,
12:10followed by his cousin, DJ.
12:13Wayne is also my boyfriend.
12:19She claims Wayne had been unhappy about her new boyfriend.
12:24All right, tonight when he showed up at your house,
12:26was there any arguing?
12:30I was saying,
12:32y'all get out of my house.
12:35Wayne took and said,
12:37calm down.
12:38DJ, we put up the gun.
12:42And he just started shooting.
12:47What's this guy's full name?
12:50The way Alfre is.
12:52They call him.
12:55Wayne.
13:07Here's her ex-boyfriend.
13:1026-year-old Dwayne Alvarez
13:13has no felony convictions.
13:18Here we go.
13:20The alleged shooter, DJ,
13:22is 29-year-old Doman Brown Jr.
13:25He's got nothing really violent.
13:27He's got nothing in his history either.
13:29She picked the individual
13:30that she knew as DJ as well as Dwayne.
13:34We'll start our search for them.
13:39It just doesn't feel right yet.
13:40I guess when people come in
13:42and tell us the truth,
13:43we don't have to poke and prod
13:45and elicit information out of them.
13:48We have a hard time with it.
13:59They were both picked up by the St. Menard Sheriff's Office,
14:02which is a local parish here
14:03that butts up to New Orleans.
14:05Ten hours into the manhunt,
14:07both men have been arrested.
14:11If I ignore the evidence,
14:14the witness was there,
14:16saw what happened.
14:19For someone to come in like this
14:21and tell us straightforward what happened,
14:24it's uncommon.
14:26My gut tells me
14:29it's too good to be true.
14:31I think you're right then.
14:34I think that's pretty accurate
14:3597% of the time.
14:36Does it?
14:37Do you have scientific evidence on this?
14:46Hi, buddy.
14:48Got your head goes in front?
14:49Yeah, it's cold.
14:50Detectives will interview DeWing first.
14:54I was just trying to wait
14:55to the narcotic cop,
14:56Jonathan,
14:57if that was okay with y'all.
14:58I just feel comfortable talking
14:59in front of him, you know?
15:01They're calling him now.
15:02Okay.
15:04Who do you know recently
15:05that was killed?
15:05DeWing?
15:12My brother, man.
15:14My brother, man.
15:17My two,
15:18I want to talk about today.
15:25Do you guys have any recent problems
15:28or arguments or anything?
15:29We never had an argument.
15:31We never had a problem.
15:33We never had a dispute.
15:35We hang so tight.
15:37It's like we Sarmina twins, man.
15:40You can't break us, man.
15:44Okay.
15:45You can come in.
15:46What's happening, man?
15:47The detective DeWing requested
15:49to speak with has arrived.
15:52Do you mind if I talk to him
15:54when I was a friend right now?
15:55Absolutely.
16:00What's happening, man?
16:04What's happening, bro?
16:07Two.
16:09I'm two, my girl.
16:10DeWing claims he was hanging out
16:12with some friends
16:12and decided to visit the victim.
16:16You didn't know anything
16:17was about to go down?
16:28I swear to God with my kids.
16:35I'm not going to the house.
16:36I throw him so.
16:38Like, all of a sudden,
16:40you hear something like,
16:41you know, like, boom.
16:42You know what I'm saying?
16:43I throw you.
16:44Boom.
16:44He likes this.
16:45This is definitely, huh?
16:46This is the investigator.
16:48Hi, BJ.
16:49You're involved in us.
16:55How's that?
16:57You're real with me.
17:10That's why it's hard for me to say this one day.
17:12I can't listen.
17:14I can't.
17:16I can't, bro.
17:17Get up.
17:18I can't listen to this one day.
17:19I can't listen to this one day.
17:35Can they explain to you
17:37why you're down here?
17:38Detectives turned to DJ,
17:40the alleged shooter.
17:42All I know is that
17:44they got my name
17:45and Dwayne
17:46on the internet
17:47right now.
17:48You understand?
17:49I don't know what's going on.
17:51You want to know
17:52the story,
17:53what happened?
17:58I ain't killed nobody, bro.
18:01Bet you were there.
18:05DJ,
18:07I'm looking at a family man.
18:08You got a wedding ring.
18:09You got kids.
18:10You got a job.
18:10You got, you know,
18:12a life.
18:17I see it weighing on you.
18:20Is it possible that
18:23someone trying to put this on you
18:24to save themselves?
18:33Well, I need it all of you, man.
18:37Okay.
18:38Okay.
18:45Unfortunately, DJ didn't cop to the murder.
18:50It just seemed like he wanted to get something
18:51off his chest,
18:52but he couldn't bring himself to say it.
18:54So at this point,
18:55I have no other option
18:56but to book him
18:57and the wing
18:57with second-degree murder.
19:07Hello?
19:09Vought gets a call
19:10from a detective
19:11in the sex crimes division.
19:16Oof.
19:18And they said
19:18that the female
19:19might have assisted him?
19:23Okay.
19:27Oh, God.
19:29So our star witness
19:31is going to be charged
19:32with the crime
19:33of first-degree rape.
19:34I'm sorry, what?
19:36Two months before the homicide,
19:39the female witness
19:40and DeWing Alvarez
19:41were involved
19:42in another crime
19:43together.
19:45Apparently,
19:46she assisted
19:47by holding the female down
19:48while doing rape her.
19:51There goes her credibility.
19:52Yeah.
19:54Oh, my God.
19:56From the very start,
19:56I felt
19:58that something
19:59was off with the witness.
20:00It doesn't mean
20:02that the case
20:03goes down the toilet.
20:19This case,
20:20it didn't go to trial.
20:22DeWing
20:23took a plea deal
20:24for manslaughter.
20:25So, essentially,
20:26he's admitting
20:26to doing the shooting,
20:28which,
20:29at the end of the day,
20:30makes more sense.
20:31From the very start,
20:32I felt
20:33that I wasn't
20:35getting a complete story.
20:37And in the end,
20:38my instincts were right.
21:26Alan and Roman,
21:27I mean,
21:27he's red.
21:29Somebody got shot up.
21:31We've seen the cat running.
21:33Could you give me a description
21:34of the person
21:35you saw running, sir?
21:36He had dreams
21:37in his hair,
21:38all slim.
21:39I'm walking
21:40to the body right now.
21:43Oh, he's dead.
21:46He's dead.
21:56He's dead.
21:58What y'all seen
21:59when y'all got here?
22:00Three guys
22:01were trying to flag us down
22:02with a whole bunch
22:02of people out here.
22:04If anybody saw anything,
22:05we just heard shots.
22:20Looking at very bad wounds.
22:26The victim
22:27is 31-year-old
22:28Bryant Brastfield.
22:30Born and raised
22:31in New Orleans,
22:32he was a long-time member
22:33of two Second Line
22:34social clubs.
22:37He has multiple
22:38gunshot wounds
22:39all over his body
22:41and his face.
22:42His eye has been blown out,
22:45so this does appear
22:46to be somebody
22:46that was at close range.
22:51A lot of cases
22:52out here right now.
22:54Near the body,
22:56detectives find
22:5720 .40-caliber casings.
22:59I don't know
23:00if this was a plan
23:01to get him back here
23:02and kill him
23:03or just...
23:06I see a lot
23:07of unanswered questions
23:08right now.
23:11What's up, bro?
23:13You said he was in the house.
23:15They had about
23:16eight or nine gunshots.
23:17After canvassing the area,
23:19patrol finds a witness.
23:21All right.
23:23All right.
23:24He's willing to talk.
23:25I'm going up that now.
23:32It's the police, sir.
23:39The witness said
23:40he heard between
23:41six and seven gunshots.
23:43He came outside
23:44and he seen a black male
23:46come out of the alley
23:46and flee down Allen Street.
23:49And then later,
23:50while he was still
23:50standing out here,
23:51this unknown black male
23:52came back out here.
23:53You know, he said,
23:54man, it looked like
23:55the same dude.
23:57Hey.
24:00On this corner
24:01right here.
24:03We have ATF,
24:04special agent,
24:05and a canine
24:05to assist us.
24:10Okay.
24:12All right.
24:13Which houses
24:14did he come between?
24:15It's this house right here
24:16and I think
24:17this one right here.
24:18He came up that alleyway.
24:25Here's footprints here,
24:27right?
24:29Nick, you think maybe
24:30he went around this way?
24:32He probably did.
24:33That's what makes sense.
24:35I mean,
24:35this is the path
24:36of least resistance.
24:38No, no, he didn't.
24:40This is what he was
24:41coming back for.
24:42F***ing phone.
24:43Wow, this phone?
24:43His phone is right here.
24:45Fresh phone.
24:47This phone looks like
24:48he's just been dropped
24:49right here.
24:50That's probably
24:51why he came back.
24:57Then...
24:57Got him.
24:59Oh, yeah, dude.
25:01A block away,
25:03patrol finds the man
25:04described by the witness.
25:06He's in the back
25:07of that vehicle right now.
25:09The witness gave
25:10a description.
25:11He matches
25:12that description.
25:15Detectives give the man
25:17a gunshot residue test
25:18in the patrol car.
25:20Positive.
25:21He positively
25:22saw his GSO test
25:23just came back positive.
25:25We did a presumptive
25:26gunshot residue test
25:27on that individual
25:28which was presumptive positive.
25:29He was actually
25:30going to be transported
25:31to headquarters
25:31for a formal interview.
25:34We're going to go
25:35all out tonight.
25:36We're not leaving
25:37until we get a confession.
25:50Good morning.
25:52Good evening.
25:54Whatever we want,
25:55call it.
26:00So do you know
26:01what happened
26:01out there tonight?
26:04I know a person
26:05got murdered
26:06because I'm in the
26:07homicide.
26:08That's all I know.
26:10Right.
26:12How did you get
26:13in the back
26:14of a police car?
26:16I know they got
26:16people that kill people
26:17and they come back
26:18to the scene.
26:19Just like the officer
26:20was telling me earlier.
26:21I'm like,
26:22that's too stupid.
26:23That's stupid.
26:27That's too stupid.
26:28I would never
26:28do nothing like that.
26:32Did you shoot
26:33a gun today?
26:35Hell no.
26:37Can you tell
26:38me and Detective
26:39Johnson
26:39why your gunshot
26:42resident test
26:43would have been
26:43positive for gunpowder?
26:50Uh...
26:53You don't know
26:54why your test
26:55could be positive?
26:59I have no idea.
27:02I don't even
27:03throw the gun.
27:06Did you kill
27:08anybody like that?
27:10I would never
27:11do nothing like that.
27:12I wouldn't
27:12kill no one.
27:16We have gunshots.
27:20He says he was
27:21on his grandmother's
27:22porch when he
27:23heard multiple
27:24shots fired.
27:25He and his cousin
27:26then raced over
27:27to see if the victim
27:28was someone they
27:28knew.
27:29Because we have a lot
27:30of family around here.
27:31My cousin's like,
27:32please, please tell
27:33me what it is.
27:34She thinking
27:35it's one of her
27:35people or something.
27:37I'm going behind
27:37him.
27:38They just grab me,
27:39man.
27:41He was like,
27:42I guess the dress,
27:43he said, uh,
27:44and the guy was
27:45wearing black pants
27:46and a white shirt.
27:48I'm like,
27:49well, sir,
27:49I got on blue pants.
27:51And I got on the
27:52tank top.
27:52He was like,
27:53well,
27:54sometimes anybody
27:55mistaken blue jeans
27:56for black pants.
27:58So you're saying
27:59you had people
28:00with you.
28:01Everybody that stays
28:02in the house,
28:03like,
28:04they was right there
28:05with me when we
28:06heard the shots.
28:08Okay.
28:10All right.
28:11Um.
28:12I'm not arrested,
28:13really.
28:13No, you're not
28:14under arrest.
28:15Right.
28:15So it's like,
28:16you know,
28:16I'm not even used
28:17to this type of stuff,
28:18but I feel so
28:19comfortable with
28:20talking to y'all
28:21because, you know,
28:21if you innocent,
28:22you don't got
28:23nothing to hide.
28:24You know,
28:24you should feel
28:25you can look
28:25a man in the face
28:26and talk to him
28:27like, you know,
28:28no stuttering
28:29and all that.
28:30You know,
28:31all that type of stuff,
28:32you know,
28:34stand by for one second.
28:37I was with him.
28:47Give me a hand-cuff key.
28:51I believe him, too.
28:53Let me get a story
28:54too clean.
28:55That's why I ain't
28:56about to sit here
28:57and hold him, man.
28:58I just...
29:00That's not him, bro.
29:04How good is the witness
29:05that said it looked
29:06like him?
29:07That's the thing.
29:08He didn't say it was him.
29:09He said it just
29:11looked like him.
29:15This gunshot
29:16residue test,
29:17We have had people
29:19that didn't shoot a firearm.
29:21They come back positive
29:23at first.
29:26We just don't have
29:27nothing.
29:28That's not good enough
29:30for me.
29:30You know,
29:31we don't lock up
29:31innocent people.
29:38At this time,
29:40we're going to conclude
29:41this part of our investigation.
29:43We're going to conclude
29:43with this interview.
29:46Bring you out the room.
29:47You're going to call
29:48your family members.
29:51I'm going to have to do
29:52a little bit more legwork.
29:54I need to do a search
29:55one on the phone.
29:57We're just not going
29:58to jump the gun on it
29:59because this isn't
30:00a sprint.
30:01You know,
30:02this is a marathon.
30:03We take our time
30:04because if this guy
30:06is innocent,
30:07you know,
30:07we're not going
30:08to put an innocent
30:08man in jail.
30:17The next day,
30:20I see the police
30:21last night.
30:22They put a guy
30:23in that call.
30:25Williams gets a call
30:26from a man
30:26who lives
30:27near the crime scene.
30:29I'm going to see
30:30that boy.
30:31Okay.
30:32Okay.
30:33this guy,
30:33give them here.
30:35We need to put
30:35a haircut on it.
30:37what that was
30:38with you.
30:40That's wrong, man.
30:43Well,
30:43I appreciate
30:44your information.
30:45I'm about to go
30:46finish work
30:46in this case.
30:48All right.
30:49All right.
30:49Thank you, sir.
30:50Okay.
30:51I'm fine.
30:54So that was huge.
30:57He didn't want
30:57to see an innocent
30:58person go to jail.
31:00We try to get
31:01the people
31:02that's responsible
31:03for the incident,
31:04but it's just as
31:05important to clear
31:06innocent people
31:07as it is
31:07to bring charges
31:08against the accused
31:09or the guilty person.
31:11So we have
31:12a tough job
31:12out here.
31:13You have to continue
31:15the search.
31:15You should keep
31:16going and going
31:17and going.
31:31and going and going
31:32And going and going
31:46and going and going
31:47and going and going
31:47and going and going
