00:39Kimi Antonelli is the youngest ever
00:41leader of an F1 World Championship
00:44after back-to-back victories
00:45he's back at a circuit where last year
00:48he picked up Sprint Pole
00:49can he repeat defeat in
00:512026
00:53we're at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami
00:55the Miami International Autodrome
00:58the scene as F1 returns
00:59after a five-week break
01:01Sprint Qualifying gets underway
01:03at half past nine
01:07Evening all
01:07welcome to Miami
01:09it is a sweltering one today
01:11very, very hot indeed
01:13the sweat is dripping down my back
01:15but that's probably more information that you need at this stage
01:17of the evening
01:18welcome Martin Brumman
01:20the only chef at Jenson Bun
01:21let's get into Kimi
01:23as I said the youngest ever leader
01:25of a F1 World Championship
01:27and as I said here
01:29the place that he picked up Sprint Pole
01:57in Formula 1 last year
01:58yes he did a lot of miles in the car
02:00probably more than any other driver
02:01before they started racing in Formula 1
02:03a lot of testing
02:04but
02:05testing is one thing
02:06and then racing is another
02:07put him in a situation
02:08with the likes of
02:09Fernando Alonso
02:11Charles Leclerc
02:12you know Lewis Hamilton
02:12multiple world champions
02:14it's very different
02:16than just practice
02:16so it's just been experience for him
02:18seems like he's got his head screwed on
02:20wants to learn
02:21and he's not just throwing everything at it
02:23now he's building up to it
02:24a little bit more I think
02:25and the team obviously
02:26talking down his world championship chances
02:28they think
02:29by his own admission
02:30he's going to make mistakes
02:31because he's still raw
02:32George has got the consistency
02:34puts the trails in by nine
02:35look at the end of the day
02:37you know as we said
02:38he's a teenager
02:38he's come into Formula 1
02:39with a lot of hype behind his name
02:41and I think part of the issue last year
02:43was that pressure
02:44that was building up for him
02:45so I think that they're very
02:46strategically doing that
02:47they don't want to add
02:48any additional unnecessary pressure
02:49he said himself
02:50he's going to take it race by race
02:52and you can tell that
02:52even the energy between him and George
02:54is very different
02:55I mean George
02:55clearly having been in F1
02:57for a lot longer
02:57walks into the garage
02:59helmet on
03:00so focused
03:00I think the pressure's a bit high for him
03:02whereas Kimi think he knows now
03:04he doesn't need to
03:05prove himself every moment
03:06he's learning
03:07but he's got an opportunity
03:08so he doesn't want to waste it either
03:09we had an hour and a half of practice
03:11it was extended
03:12because obviously
03:12he knew rules and regulations
03:13which we'll get into
03:14in a few moments of time
03:15but it was Charles Leclerc
03:16who was quickest
03:17they've got loads of upgrades
03:19as have McLaren
03:21but Mercedes saving theirs
03:23from Montreal
03:23and actually
03:24they said they were managing
03:25a power unit issue
03:26on Kimi
03:27so he didn't get a flying lap
03:28in mid-sauce
03:29but he was still
03:30about level
03:31with his team mate
03:32but both of them
03:33about seven and a half
03:34tenths off
03:34Charles Leclerc
03:35when what's team's on the hard
03:37and George on the soft
03:38so George with his own issues
03:39clearly
03:40yeah George was
03:41late out wasn't he
03:42and he was talking
03:43it sounded like a train
03:45didn't it
03:46he was saying
03:46but it sounded like
03:47a wastegate problem
03:48to me
03:49so some gremlins
03:50in the Mercedes
03:51we haven't seen
03:52much of so far
03:54this season
03:54but
03:55you know
03:56the track will be
03:57completely different
03:58when they go out again
03:58the temperatures
03:59the grip level
04:01you can hear cars out
04:02on track
04:02F2 have been out
04:03as well
04:03so it's a magical mystery tour
04:06as soon as they head out of the pits
04:07ok let's just refresh your memory
04:09of what the championship looks like
04:11after three races
04:12and a sprint in China
04:14and it is Kimi Antonelli
04:15that leads away by nine points
04:16from his team mate
04:17Charlotte Clare
04:18is eight ahead
04:19of Lewis Hamilton
04:21Lando Norris
04:21and Oscar Piastri
04:22in behind
04:23Oli Behrman
04:24the best of the rest
04:24outside of the top three teams
04:27a fine start
04:28from the young British driver
04:29and from Haas as well
04:30Pierre Gasly looking good
04:32Max Verstappen
04:33Leso
04:33although
04:34he was second quickest
04:35and three tenths off
04:36Charlotte Clare
04:37in that hour and a half
04:38of practice
04:38looks like they have found
04:39some answers
04:40he's a catcher
04:41his teammate is on
04:42four points
04:43alongside Arvid Limblad
04:44who picked some up
04:45on debut
04:46hasn't added to them since
04:47as Sir Martin drivers
04:49rooted to the bottom
04:50no upgrades
04:51interestingly for them
04:52this weekend
04:53Mercedes lead the way
04:54in the constructors
04:55by 45 from Ferrari
04:56who in turn
04:57are 44 ahead
04:59of McLaren
05:00right
05:00so changes
05:01to the rules
05:02and regulations
05:03here's Ted
05:04with all you need to know
05:08three races
05:09into F1's new rule set
05:11was enough
05:11for the FIA
05:12the sports governing body
05:13and Formula 1
05:15to make some changes
05:16to the technical regulations
05:18in order to improve
05:19some of the areas
05:20that drivers
05:21teams
05:21and fans
05:22felt could do
05:23with a little bit of help
05:27firstly the FIA
05:28have given themselves
05:29the option
05:29of reducing the amount
05:30of battery charging allowed
05:32depending on the track
05:33this will make the cars
05:35a bit slower
05:36than they were
05:36in the first three races
05:37but not noticeably so
05:43what it will help with
05:45is cutting down
05:46on the so-called
05:46super clipping
05:47running the generator
05:48up against the engine
05:49when it's on full power
05:51to just a few seconds worth
05:52at various points
05:54around the lap
05:56and they've maximized
05:58the rate at which
05:58that can be done
05:59a sensible tweak
06:00many teams felt
06:01should have been in place
06:02from the start of the season
06:05to avoid big differences
06:06in car speeds
06:07and potential accidents
06:08the amount of extra
06:09boost button
06:10power punch
06:11has been limited
06:12to plus 150 kilowatts
06:14about 200 horsepower
06:16so still not bad
06:17and just enough
06:18to get overtakes done
06:19but they might not be
06:20as easy as they were
06:21before
06:21especially as the FIA
06:23can knock down
06:24a bit of battery boost
06:25in some parts of the track
06:27for safety reasons
06:28to avoid those massive
06:29differences
06:30in car closing speeds
06:36add to all that
06:37the possibility of some
06:37cars getting dodgy starts
06:39looks set to be reduced
06:40here in Miami
06:42they'll be testing
06:42a system on the cars
06:43that can detect
06:44a slow getaway
06:45after you drop the clutch
06:47and then give the driver
06:48an instant extra bit
06:49of electric power boost
06:50to help him off the line
06:52and up to speed
06:53and finally a few tidy ups
06:55concerning the formation lapse
06:57so drivers don't start
06:58with zero battery allowance
06:59a bit more leeway
07:00on how many tracks
07:01the FIA can lower
07:02the energy limits on
07:03and some provisions
07:04for better safety
07:05and visibility
07:06in wet weather conditions
07:07that we haven't seen yet
07:08this season
07:10so there the changes
07:11not a huge deal
07:12but a package
07:13all the teams and drivers
07:14have agreed on
07:14to improve performance
07:16consistency
07:17and safety
07:22Martin
07:23do you like
07:23what they've done
07:24yeah
07:25they've got to smooth
07:26the power out
07:26power delivery
07:27you've got the battery
07:28you've got the engine
07:30and the combination
07:31of those two
07:32is a thousand horsepower
07:33so what they've done
07:34is a lot of common sense
07:35of you know
07:36let's not have too much
07:38power in one place
07:38and run out
07:39in another
07:40so they've just
07:41equaled it out
07:42a little bit more
07:42around the track
07:43there's more work to do
07:44yeah
07:44one of the main
07:45gripes was that
07:46we weren't getting
07:47flat out qualifying
07:48I know this is an
07:49energy rich track
07:50so we probably
07:52maybe that masks it
07:53a little bit here
07:53but it looks like
07:54they've got that
07:55sorted out
07:55at least for this track
07:56yeah well that's a
07:57tricky thing
07:57I mean we've only had
07:58three races this season
07:59so far
08:00and some of those
08:01circuits are anomalies
08:02on the calendar
08:02and so we've taken
08:03that set of data
08:04to make these changes
08:05but as you say
08:06the circuit lends itself
08:07with hard braking corners
08:08to recharging
08:10so it might look better here
08:11than it might look at
08:11some other circuits
08:12down the line
08:13but they've taken a step
08:14in the right direction
08:15the drivers will be more
08:16flat out now
08:17in qualifying
08:18we hope to see that
08:19happening
08:19because drivers just
08:20want to go out there
08:21and be flat out
08:21it's so against
08:22what we're used to doing
08:23to be lifting and coasting
08:24particularly in qualifying
08:25you don't want to ever see that
08:26it might be a bit easier here
08:28to be at full power
08:29but I think the most important
08:31thing is that they learn
08:31from this race
08:32and take that to all
08:33the other tracks
08:33because it's very easy
08:34for them to adjust
08:35the megajoules
08:35that they're allowed to use
08:36so we can have great qualifying
08:38and from looking at practice
08:40it looked like we were getting
08:41them braking very late
08:43and that's why we had
08:43so many issues with locking up
08:45they haven't driven
08:46these cars like that before
08:47so they're learning new things
08:48about these cars here in Miami
08:49I completely agree
08:50I was out trackside
08:51as you know
08:52in several spots
08:53and the cars are great
08:54they've been moving around
08:56the drivers having to jockey them
08:57having to stay on top of them
08:58they looked absolutely fine
09:00out there today
09:00okay let's go to the skypad
09:02Karun is there
09:03I think he's going to have a look
09:04at Lewis's lap
09:06with the full display on
09:07so he can see exactly
09:08what the battery is doing
09:11Karun
09:11that's right Simon
09:12let's take a look
09:13this was Lewis Hamilton
09:14in a free practice
09:15earlier today
09:17and to Martin's point
09:18it's great
09:18look at the drivers
09:19heading into Turn 1
09:20they were all struggling
09:21watch Lewis's hands here
09:22they're on the limit
09:23and this is one of the
09:24criticisms that was coming
09:26into the sport
09:28the drivers looked like
09:29they were under driving
09:30on the one lap in qualifying
09:32but that's not the case here
09:33we are absolutely seeing
09:35these drivers
09:35having to push hard
09:36having to hustle the car
09:37look at the Ferrari here
09:39through 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
09:41this is where they've been
09:43brilliant against the opposition
09:44Hamilton here
09:45just waiting
09:47getting the front in
09:48now he's got the battery
09:49topped up
09:50because we've got a long
09:51straight running down here
09:53to Turn 11
09:54just deploying
09:55all of the engine
09:56watch the acceleration
09:57he's halfway down the straight
09:59and he's already over
10:00200 mile an hour
10:01210 mile an hour
10:02there
10:03now we do a bit of harvesting
10:04because he's got to think
10:05about the straight
10:06coming from 16
10:08in 5 corners time
10:10through this section
10:12you've got to really
10:13underdrive
10:13don't kill the tires
10:15too hard
10:16especially the rears
10:17on acceleration
10:17with all of that
10:19extra power
10:19and torque
10:20they've got
10:20with the electric motor
10:22out at 16
10:23now remember I was saying
10:24he was completely empty
10:25as we went
10:27into Turn 11
10:28that slow section
10:29has allowed him
10:30to pretty much
10:31top up the battery
10:32you'll see it there
10:33when he comes
10:34onto that straight
10:35out at 16
10:36it's pretty much
10:36like 95%
10:38picks up a little bit
10:39now deploys
10:40all that energy
10:41and look at the speed
10:42he's going to be up
10:43to 342 km an hour
10:46before
10:47then we get a little bit
10:48of harvesting
10:49jump on the brake
10:50but look how hard it is
10:51he can't get it stopped
10:52for the apex
10:53it just shows
10:54that that challenge
10:56that we wanted
10:57to come back
10:58to the drivers
10:59but they're struggling
10:59to slow the cars down
11:01struggling to find
11:02that little precipice
11:04of grip
11:04and get the car
11:05into the apex
11:06that seems to have
11:07come back here
11:08this weekend
11:08which is very exciting
11:10to see
11:10back to you guys
11:13yes it is indeed
11:14thank you Karun
11:15busy here
11:16as I was saying
11:17four weeks ago
11:17at the Miami Open
11:19tennis in
11:19seven weeks time
11:20it will be the first game
11:21in the World Cup
11:22they're hosting
11:23seven matches here
11:24at the Hard Rock Stadium
11:25and when we return
11:26one of the other
11:27big stories
11:28from the five weeks off
11:31it's the end of one
11:32of Formula One's
11:33greatest partnerships
11:35it's Max Verstappen
11:36and his race engineer
11:38Gian Piero Lambiazzi
11:39that's very rare
11:40I think in racing
11:42you know
11:42you don't see that often
11:43that a driver
11:44and engineer
11:45they gel that
11:45well together
11:47and that's of course
11:48something that I'll have
11:49to try and find again
12:01welcome back
12:01now as I mentioned
12:02before the break
12:03one of the big stories
12:04in the enforced break
12:06that we had
12:07between the last race
12:08and this one
12:08was that
12:09Gian Piero Lambiazzi
12:10Max Verstappen's
12:11loyal race engineer
12:12will be leaving
12:13Red Bull for McLaren
12:15in 2028
12:16here's Ted
12:30it's the end of one of
12:31Formula One's
12:32greatest partnerships
12:33bittersweet or not
12:35it's Max Verstappen
12:36and his race engineer
12:37Gian Piero Lambiazzi
12:39the duo that fight
12:40like brothers
12:41but who fight to win
12:43that's some gentle introduction
12:44you guys give me
12:46this strategy okay
12:47I'm trying to rescue myself
12:48it's better for us
12:50when we let us
12:51get on the car
12:51that's just
12:52completely
12:52race
12:54sorry to be for
12:55a show on the rent
12:57slowly getting used to it
12:59Max
13:00that's perfection
13:01just perfection
13:02Max
13:02that is four in a row
13:05Max
13:05congratulations
13:06well like all good things
13:08it's coming to an end
13:09because of his recent success
13:12Lambiazzi's had a few offers
13:13from rival teams
13:14Williams it was even rumored
13:16Aston Martin wanted him to be
13:17their next team principal
13:18but in the end
13:19the team that got him
13:20was the very team
13:22he spent the whole of last season
13:24trying to beat
13:25Red Bull's most recent rivals
13:27McLaren
13:28we want the best of the best
13:30in every area
13:30as a team we believe
13:32there's an area that he can cover
13:33and a responsibility
13:35that he can improve
13:36within our team
13:37he's obviously a great guy
13:38he's someone who's
13:39achieved an incredible amount
13:40with Max
13:41and I think it's a great opportunity
13:43for us to learn from someone new
13:44and someone that wants to join
13:45McLaren as well
13:46that makes it even better
13:47GP's position will be
13:49Chief Racing Officer
13:50what that really means
13:51is that McLaren wanted someone
13:53with the cutthroat smarts
13:54of Red Bull Racing
13:55someone who wouldn't have let
13:57both McLarens get to see
13:58disqualified in Las Vegas
13:59last year
13:59someone who would have
14:01made the decision
14:01to pit both cars
14:02under the safety car in Qatar
14:04and someone who would have
14:05stamped down on some
14:06of the inter-team tensions
14:08between Lando Norris
14:09and Oscar Piastri
14:09long before Papaya Rules
14:11ever got out of bed
14:13all good so far for McLaren
14:15but there is a catch
14:16Lambiazzi is being held
14:17to the end of his contract
14:18which runs to the end
14:19of next season
14:20meaning McLaren
14:21can only get hold of him
14:22before 2028
14:23if a financial deal
14:25is worked out
14:26he has a contract
14:27and we're going to respect that
14:28obviously
14:28in conversations
14:30with Red Bull
14:31they need to
14:32I presume obviously
14:34have a solution
14:35and then
14:35once and if that's in place
14:38open to have a dialogue
14:40but we're prepared
14:41to wait until 28
14:42and that's what we'll do
14:42if that's what
14:43ends up happening
14:44at the same time
14:45it's in Red Bull Racing's interest
14:47to keep GP out of McLaren's hands
14:49for as long as possible
14:50so what does this mean
14:51for Red Bull Racing
14:52well it's another key person
14:54lost to this pit wall
14:55you had Christian Horner
14:57then Adrian Newey
14:58Helmut Marko
14:59Rob Marshall
15:00and Jonathan Wheatley
15:01all gone
15:02and next it's GP Lambiazzi
15:04in the post Horner era
15:05here at Red Bull
15:06you couldn't really describe it
15:07as a sinking ship
15:08but at the same time
15:10they're not exactly
15:11keeping the band together
15:12if we have lost
15:13so many people
15:14in the past
15:15it also highlights
15:16how much of a talent factory
15:18this place is
15:18he has had an extraordinary opportunity
15:21we respect
15:23the fact that
15:24this sort of opportunity
15:25comes once in a lifetime
15:26as much as this has been
15:28a news for you guys
15:29it's something we've been
15:30discussing with him
15:31for a very long time
15:32and we only wish him well
15:34in that next phase
15:36we want this place
15:37to be the one
15:39everyone wants to
15:40come to work to
15:41and we want
15:42our own people
15:43to have all the space
15:44to evolve in their careers
15:45to get promoted
15:47and to move to the light
15:48GP doesn't give interviews
15:50but as for why he's leaving
15:52Jos Verstappen
15:53said the quiet part out loud
15:54in this social media reply
15:57and the biggest question
15:58from Red Bull's point of view
16:00does this mean Max is leaving too?
16:02the chemistry works really well
16:04that's very rare
16:04I think in racing
16:06you don't see that often
16:07that a driver and an engineer
16:09they gel that well together
16:10and that's of course
16:12something that I'll have to try
16:13and find again
16:15time will tell
16:16from his early days at Jordan
16:18alongside Peter Bonington
16:19to four world championships
16:21in a row
16:21with Max Verstappen
16:23the engineer behind it all
16:24faces a fascinating next chapter
16:26in a very different team
16:28you can go your own way
16:32you can go your own way
16:32you can go your own way
16:35Hi Zach
16:36how are you?
16:37I'm good
16:38good signing
16:39now during an intense grilling
16:41that I gave
16:42Lauren McKees earlier
16:43he came out with this
16:45can you just have a quick listen?
16:47GP had an extraordinary opportunity
16:49you know
16:49he's going to be
16:50a team principal there
16:52it's not something that
16:54I can do anything else
16:55than wishing him well
16:59team principal
17:01he knows something I don't
17:02apparently
17:03I've got one
17:04and I've got a great one
17:05I've got the best one in pit lane
17:06Andrea Stella
17:07so I couldn't be happier
17:09with Andrea
17:10maybe that was a little bit
17:11lost in translation
17:12but
17:13what I would say
17:14is I mean
17:15up and down the pit lane
17:16he's very highly regarded
17:17of course
17:17do you just see this
17:18this is another coup
17:19you're attracting
17:20the best people to McLaren
17:21you know my job as CEO
17:23is to get the best talent
17:25to think long term
17:26to have the most strength
17:28on pit wall
17:30or at the factory
17:31and design
17:31whatever the case may be
17:32and so
17:33you know
17:34Andrea has done a fantastic job
17:36our technical team
17:38and
17:38GP's a huge
17:40huge talent
17:40so when the opportunity
17:42presented itself
17:42to
17:43to strengthen our
17:44racing team
17:45that's exactly what
17:46we're going to do
17:47whether it's a racing driver
17:48or an engineer
17:48or a strategist
17:49whatever the case may be
17:51so I'm very happy
17:51he's going to be joining us
17:53yeah I think
17:54Jos Verstappen
17:55was hugely unfair
17:56to say that he's only
17:57joining you
17:57because of the money
17:58because I think
17:59GP's a much deeper
18:00thinker than that
18:01but
18:012028 is the date
18:03we're talking about
18:04can he get him earlier
18:05what happens between teams
18:07and that negotiation
18:08yeah you know
18:10we know how this game
18:11works
18:12you know
18:12at some point
18:13it'll be
18:15probably uncomfortable
18:16having someone
18:17that you know
18:18going to a rival team
18:19I know
18:20you know
18:20my general view
18:21is if someone
18:22wants to move on
18:24you need to do it
18:24in a measured way
18:26but if someone
18:26doesn't want to be
18:27at my team anymore
18:28I've never been one
18:29that feels like
18:31people
18:32steal people
18:33from each other
18:34drivers
18:34sponsors
18:35you know
18:36you lose them
18:36or they have interest
18:38in something else
18:38so
18:3928th one
18:40is contracts through
18:41we'll wait
18:43if that's what's necessary
18:44if there's something
18:45to be done earlier
18:46then of course
18:47we'd be interested
18:48but I think right now
18:48we're all stuck
18:49in the 26th
18:50and there's obviously
18:51got to be firewalls
18:52between any knowledge
18:53that he passes to you
18:55or he might gain
18:56from McLaren
18:57in that time
18:57yeah
18:58it makes things
19:00uncomfortable
19:00right
19:01if I had someone
19:01in my racing team
19:02that I knew
19:03was going
19:03whether it's a racing driver
19:05you see it in racing drivers
19:06you hear about it
19:07with racing drivers
19:08you know
19:08when
19:08you know
19:09Lewis went to Ferrari
19:11announced it early
19:11at some point
19:12Mercedes
19:13you know
19:14starts understandably
19:15cutting off knowledge
19:16that he might have
19:17and that's just
19:18how the business works
19:19so
19:21yeah
19:21we'll see how it plays out
19:22we've got time
19:23we know we're all settled
19:23for 26
19:24so
19:25we'll chat about it
19:26when the time's right
19:27I know you're very happy
19:27with your driver lineup
19:28as it is
19:29but does it open up
19:30a pathway to max
19:31further down the line
19:32I couldn't be happier
19:33with our driver lineup
19:34you know
19:34Lando and Oscar
19:35you know
19:36not only are two awesome guys
19:37you know
19:38on the track
19:38off the track
19:39but as teammates
19:41which is so much
19:42I think what's made
19:43McLaren successful here
19:45is the chemistry
19:46that we have
19:47in the garage
19:47in the factory
19:49with our pit wall
19:50all throughout
19:51the racing team
19:52so
19:52I couldn't be happier
19:54with what we have
19:54and zero intention
19:55in changing it
19:56if a gap opened up
19:58in your team
19:58would Max be top
19:59of the list
20:00well he's an awesome
20:01racing driver
20:02so if a gap opened up
20:03that's a different
20:04different conversation
20:06of course
20:07you know
20:07when you see the talent
20:08that he has
20:10yeah
20:11and if you were
20:11looking for a racing driver
20:13I think there's a lot
20:14of great racing drivers
20:15out there
20:16Charles Leclerc's
20:17doing an amazing job
20:18you know
20:18it's great to see
20:19Lewis back on form
20:21Kimi's
20:22doing a great job
20:23George is a great driver
20:24but you know
20:25look at what
20:25Kimi's doing here
20:26you know
20:26almost kind of feel
20:27like he's the
20:27championship favorite
20:28sitting here
20:29at the moment
20:30but we see how
20:31quickly things swing
20:32in this sport
20:32but yeah
20:34I'm happy with what
20:35I've got
20:35so I hope
20:35I hope I'm not
20:36looking for a driver
20:37before we talk about
20:38what's going on
20:39on track and off track
20:39at the moment
20:40just something else
20:41that you were very strong
20:41about a couple of weeks ago
20:42I think when you're talking
20:43to Craig Slater
20:44with regards to your old mate
20:45Toto Wolff
20:46and his interest
20:47in buying a stake
20:48allegedly in Alpine
20:50how do you feel about
20:52that kind of thing
20:53and like second teams
20:54AB teams
20:54if you like
20:55I don't like it at all
20:56and it's not a
20:57Toto Mercedes thing
20:58at all
20:59I think I've been saying this
21:00since I've been in the sport
21:01from day one
21:03you know
21:04whether it's co-ownership
21:05or AB teams
21:06you know
21:07they have the ability
21:08and they have
21:09played by rules
21:11that are you know
21:12unfair from a sporting standpoint
21:14we've seen kind of
21:15sporting violations
21:17we've seen financial violations
21:19we've seen IP violations
21:21we've seen people
21:22getting passed back and forth
21:23so I think
21:24you know
21:25we're the one sport
21:26and I get how we got here
21:28but the sport is so healthy now
21:30that I don't think
21:31we need these collaborations
21:33and so I think
21:35the fan wants to know
21:36that these are
21:3711 independent teams
21:38clearly we don't all
21:40make power units
21:41so we do need
21:42to rely on
21:44power unit providers
21:45but I think
21:46that's where it should stop
21:47and people should make
21:48their own gearboxes
21:49and you shouldn't be able
21:49to pass employees around
21:51because you've said
21:52that you know
21:53they've got IP
21:53in their head
21:54and it's you know
21:56sometimes you've got to
21:57write checks to get people
21:58and if they're the same team
21:59you don't
22:00so I just think
22:01it clouds
22:02and creates
22:03a lot of conflicts
22:04and compromises
22:07the integrity
22:07of kind of
22:09sporting fairness
22:09but this is
22:10this is interesting
22:11because Toto Mercedes
22:13provides you
22:14with a power unit
22:15does he ever
22:16sort of get older
22:17and go like
22:17Zach behave yourself
22:18you're making life
22:19difficult for me
22:20no no
22:21you know
22:21quite the opposite
22:22you know
22:22last year
22:24you know
22:25I know Helmut
22:25made a comment
22:26that you know
22:27when Kimi went off
22:28you know
22:29with that crucial point
22:32in Qatar
22:33in Qatar
22:34he wasn't going to
22:35let us by
22:35we didn't ask
22:36to let him by
22:37like we're all racing
22:38so I think
22:40our relationship
22:40with Mercedes
22:41has been awesome
22:42it is strictly
22:43a power unit
22:44we're independent
22:46they've never asked
22:47us to do anything
22:47we don't ask them
22:48to do anything
22:49and we don't
22:50count on it
22:51so when we came up
22:52on Kimi
22:53we almost thought
22:53like he's going to be
22:55as tough as anyone
22:56to get past
22:57and that's the way
22:58it should be
22:58you've got a lot of upgrades
23:00almost an entirely new car
23:01here in Miami
23:03what are you expecting
23:04are you pleased
23:04with what you've seen
23:05so far on track
23:06and I mean actually
23:07Lando
23:07if Alex hadn't got in the way
23:08he would have looked
23:09pretty quick as well
23:10wouldn't he
23:10yeah so far so good
23:11I think everyone
23:12back at the factory
23:13has done a great job
23:14you know
23:15upgrading our cars
23:16become a bit of a
23:17specialty here
23:18the last couple years
23:20Ferrari look like
23:21they have a very fast car
23:22they've brought even more
23:23upgrades than we have
23:25of course Mercedes
23:26I still think
23:26is the favorite
23:28they're quite composed
23:29but I think what's great
23:30is it feels to me
23:31like the grid's
23:32going to start
23:32closing up
23:33a little bit
23:34so I feel like
23:35we'll take a step forward
23:36this weekend
23:37when the truth
23:38will come out here
23:39in about a half an hour
23:40I know
23:41I've seen you flat out
23:42with your partners
23:43sponsors
23:44I would have called them
23:45in the past
23:45but what was the feedback
23:47from Lando and Oscar
23:49with the regulation changes
23:50for this weekend
23:51after the first session
23:53definitely a step
23:53in the right direction
23:55you know
23:55I think we need to
23:56recognize that
23:57the regulations
23:58are very young
23:59they're only going
24:00to get better
24:01these engineers
24:01are extremely smart
24:03the racing's been good
24:05and Dre and I
24:05have spoke about
24:06on pit wall
24:06and you go like
24:07that's been an epic battle
24:09between Charles and Lewis
24:10or the start of
24:11you know Australia
24:12I can't remember
24:13the last time you had
24:14a lead swap
24:15three, four, five times
24:16at the same time
24:17I'm sympathetic
24:18to you know
24:19you've raced
24:20I've been in race cars
24:21I don't know
24:21if you've been in race cars
24:23maybe you have
24:25that you have to
24:26drive these cars
24:27a different way
24:27I'd like to think
24:28we're going to end up
24:29with the best of both worlds
24:30which is smoothing out
24:31this technology
24:32I think this weekend
24:33is a step in the right direction
24:35and we're going to put on
24:37a great show
24:37with awesome race cars
24:39that are the fastest race cars
24:40in the world
24:41and we just need to remember
24:42we're three races into it
24:43thank you Zach
24:44pleasure
24:45as always
24:46have a good weekend
24:47we're going to go
24:49to the other side
24:49of the garage
24:50because Rachel is there
24:51with Ted and Karu
24:52to have a look
24:52at some of these upgrades
24:53we are indeed Simon
24:54thank you very much
24:55we're down here
24:56at McLaren at the moment
24:56Shibuzi
24:57he of the Barcon
24:58has just been here
24:59having a very close look
25:00at the McLarens
25:01but now a lot of work
25:02going on Ted right now
25:03yeah I mean
25:04take a look at this
25:05the crucial upgrade
25:06if we can see it
25:08and it's just being worked on
25:09is actually the floor
25:09because that generates
25:11an immense amount
25:12of downforce
25:12and efficient downforce
25:14and this streak of paint
25:15this fluorescent paint
25:17on the floor here
25:18Rachel sends its own message
25:20and tells everybody
25:21what they've been doing
25:22in practice
25:22which is putting aerodynamic
25:24flowvis paint
25:25on bits of that floor
25:26to prove that it works
25:27so it works so far
25:28Oscar's car
25:29they're just getting ready
25:30Landos
25:30they've just dropped down
25:31all looks good
25:32but the upgrade's not so bad
25:33on that McLaren
25:34you've got to ask though Karun
25:35is this the car
25:36they should have had
25:37since the start of the season
25:39yeah but should have
25:39would have got her
25:40I think you know
25:41the reality is
25:42they wanted to get a baseline
25:43on the power unit side
25:45as Zach just said there
25:47they're not a works team
25:48you know
25:49they were reliant on Mercedes
25:50and I think
25:50they prioritise
25:52trying to learn
25:52and understand
25:53about the characteristics
25:55of how to make
25:56these new power units work
25:57before
25:58then they develop
25:59the chassis side of it
26:00so I think
26:01it's a logical step
26:02they've taken
26:03by not being a works team
26:06every team
26:07apart from Aston
26:08have brought
26:08some sort of upgrade
26:09even if it's just
26:10the one singular one
26:11for Haas
26:11Mercedes have brought upgrades
26:12but Kimi's session
26:13interrupted
26:13what can you tell us
26:14about that
26:15Mercedes have brought
26:16the most tiny upgrades
26:17you could possibly
26:18one that's about
26:19three centimetres long
26:20it's a little winglet
26:21next to the exhaust pipe
26:22it could be so important
26:23you never know
26:25but this has really been
26:26a very busy
26:27lunch break
26:28Miami time
26:28for Mercedes
26:29because there was
26:30a battery anomaly
26:32on Kimi Antonelli's car
26:34that cut short
26:35the end of his
26:35free practice one
26:36so they've had to
26:37take the power unit apart
26:38change the battery
26:39it's a fresh battery
26:40in there right now
26:41and they've just put
26:42the car back together again
26:43so yeah
26:44big job for the mechanics
26:46yeah and on the
26:46George Russell side
26:47he was struggling a lot
26:48with front locking
26:49didn't he
26:49we saw him heading off
26:51into the runoff area
26:52turn one several times
26:53he's had to do a lot
26:54of work to try and
26:55understand from the
26:56set up
26:56and the systems
26:57how they could try
26:58and can help
26:59themselves with that
27:00Red Bull
27:01we saw Max up there
27:02further up in the times
27:03Lando didn't get his time in
27:04a bit blocked by Alex
27:05or it looked like
27:05you're on track
27:06they've got a lot of upgrades
27:07Ted who's brought
27:08the most upgrades
27:09who needs for them
27:10to work the most
27:11today if you like
27:11McLaren 7
27:12Red Bull 7
27:13Ferrari 11 upgrades
27:15so to answer your question
27:17Ferrari
27:17they've got the most
27:18approved in this
27:19sprint qualifying
27:19coming up
27:20great back to you
27:21Simon
27:24thank you all
27:25very good
27:26Shibu Huzi
27:27is in the house
27:28Setson Button's
27:29favourite artist
27:30we've got 17 minutes
27:32just over 17 minutes
27:34to go
27:34until the start
27:35of sprint qualifying
27:37as that man
27:38the championship
27:38leader Kimi Antonelli
27:40looks to
27:40repeat the feat
27:41get sprint pole
27:42again as he did last year
27:51a bit of encouragement
27:52for Max Verstappen
27:53in the opening
27:54practice session
27:54the only practice session
27:55three tenths
27:56off Charlotte
27:57at the top of the time sheets
27:58Lando Norris
27:59was down in seventh
28:00but as I mentioned to Zach
28:01he didn't actually get
28:02a full lap in
28:04because he was impeded
28:05but McLaren looks like
28:06he's got pace
28:07along with the Ferrari
28:08let's go to the Skypan
28:10Karuna's hot-footed it
28:11from the pit lane
28:12to give us some
28:13qualifying points
28:17hot-footed
28:18absolutely the right word
28:19Simon
28:19it is baking
28:20out here in the sun
28:21let's take a look
28:22at the first corner
28:23lots of people
28:24struggling with lock-ups
28:24George Russell
28:25was one of them
28:26on several occasions
28:27there
28:28on board
28:29the Aston Martin
28:30here as well
28:30similar to a situation
28:31where
28:32you've got a few bumps
28:33Lewis Hamilton here
28:34let's go back
28:35I'll show you
28:36this
28:36you can see
28:37just riding on board
28:38he has a lock-up
28:39on the outside tyre
28:40now this is pretty unusual
28:42because that's the loaded tyre
28:43I think because you've got
28:44some slight bumps in the rope
28:46and also some slight elevation changes
28:48we're seeing a lot of drivers
28:49struggling
28:50with getting the car slowed down
28:52it was a slight tailwind
28:54during the first
28:54and only free practice earlier
28:56so we'll see
28:57if that has affected things
28:59because the wind has died down here
29:00now the chicane
29:01turned at 14 and 15
29:03really tricky
29:04weird cambers as well
29:05for the drivers to contend with
29:07Lewis there struggling
29:08a bit with the rear of the car
29:09riding on board
29:11with the Red Bull as well
29:12you see as he turned in here
29:13just bouncing off the curb
29:15the compliance
29:16not quite as good
29:17for Verstappen
29:18Kimi Antonelli
29:19in the Mercedes
29:20he chose on this lap
29:22to try and muddle his way through
29:24there were other laps
29:25so he went straight
29:25over the curves
29:27and the hats of Esteban Ocon
29:28did that
29:29just there
29:30going straight on
29:31so a few drivers struggling on
29:32Charles Leclerc turned 16
29:33now
29:34he got incredibly close
29:36to the wall
29:37we saw Oscar Piastri
29:38touch the wall later on
29:39this was perfect
29:41in the words of Jenson Button
29:42one centimetre away
29:44from the wall
29:45turn 17
29:46a really tricky braking zone
29:47for a lot of drivers
29:48as well
29:49not quite as bad as turn 1
29:50but Lando Norris
29:52had traffic
29:52and this could be a problem
29:54particularly in SQ1
29:56when we have all 22 cars
29:58on track
29:58the drivers
29:59and their engineers
30:00have really got to keep an eye
30:02for who's coming behind them
30:03on that long straight
30:04from 16 to 17
30:05Ted
30:06what have you got?
30:07thank you very much Karun
30:08still in the pit lane
30:09mopping up a load of other stories
30:10gotta say
30:10with the upgrades to the Alpine
30:12already Alpine
30:13fighting Red Bull
30:14for the midfield
30:15Alpine have been very
30:16very quick round here so far
30:18Pierre Gasly 8th
30:19and Franco Colopinto 11th
30:21and sandwiching them
30:22that man
30:22Carlos Sainz
30:23he was 10th in free practice 1
30:25with Alexander Alvin
30:26his teammate here at Williams
30:2712th
30:28so while they might not have
30:29taken much weight
30:30out of the car
30:30they have added
30:31some performance
30:32and some downforce
30:33so a nice upgrade for Williams
30:35good job for them
30:36and it looks like
30:37they are back in the hunt
30:38in the midfield
30:39let's take a look
30:40at the preparations
30:41if we can
30:42for Ferrari
30:43I think they expect
30:44quite a lot
30:44just had a word
30:45with Fred Vasseur
30:46not giving too much away
30:47but I think he's thinking
30:48that they can get
30:49towards the front row
30:50maybe even get one car
30:52on the front row
30:53be up there with Mercedes
30:54then see what happens
30:55in the sprint race
30:56little bit of a work
30:57on the back of Charles Leclerc's car
30:59but he seems to be
31:00the quicker Ferrari
31:01at the moment
31:02Hamilton's still making
31:03setup changes
31:03as he was ending
31:05free practice one
31:06take a look at
31:07Isaac Hadjar's car though
31:08I mean he was quick
31:09in free practice one
31:10the only practice session
31:11we had in fact
31:12with Max Verstappen second
31:15and Hadjar was there
31:17or thereabouts
31:17but he's still got a lot of work
31:19going on to his car
31:20Hadjar was ninth
31:21while Verstappen's car
31:22all ready to go
31:23so that is the scene
31:24down here
31:25Simon in the pit lane
31:26George Russell
31:27really needs a big weekend
31:28he really needs
31:29a sprint pole position
31:30and then potentially
31:31a win to get back
31:33in some momentum
31:34against Kimi Antonelli
31:35who's looked so good
31:36so far
31:37Leclerc
31:38quickest in free practice one
31:39ready to go
31:40the McLarens
31:41up there as well
31:41it's anyone's guess
31:43who's going to end up on top
31:47it is
31:48and that man there
31:49as you said
31:49I mean he could
31:50quite easily
31:51got a little bit unlucky
31:51could have won
31:52in Japan
31:53but calm as always
31:55takes everything
31:56in his stride
31:56doesn't he
31:57yeah you can never
31:58really tell what's going
31:59on in the mind
31:59of Oscar Piastri
32:00whether he's super excited
32:01or very upset
32:02it's kind of always
32:02the same reaction
32:03and face
32:04but I think he's
32:05out of the vengeance
32:06you know
32:06I mean after last year
32:07I think for a long
32:09part of the season
32:09we thought it was going
32:10to be his title
32:11to win
32:11and unfortunately
32:12at the end
32:12it wasn't the case
32:14still a lot of opportunity
32:15this year to claim it though
32:16so I think he's got to
32:17keep it putting in performances
32:18like he did in Suzuka
32:19and things will be promising
32:20what would he have taken
32:21from that actually Jensen
32:22thinking about
32:23what happened to him
32:24last year
32:24and it falling away
32:25how much will he have
32:26learned from it
32:27do you think he's the kind
32:28of driver that will
32:29actually use it
32:30to his advantage
32:31and come back stronger
32:32yeah I think we always
32:33talk about it don't we
32:34you know you only learn
32:35from mistakes that you make
32:37and the difficult situations
32:38you find yourself in
32:39and he definitely found
32:40himself in that
32:41at the end of the year
32:41it's a horrible feeling
32:43but he came out
32:44so strong at the start
32:45of the year
32:45obviously he had the issue
32:46in Melbourne
32:47but the speed was there
32:48and I think that
32:49the last race
32:50he probably would have won
32:51if we didn't get
32:52unlucky with the safety gun
32:53as we have a look
32:54at Kimi Antonelli
32:55getting into the car
32:56as you said
32:57when you're at a track
32:59that you know
32:59you've done well at
33:00before
33:01you know
33:01you've taken a sprint
33:02hole
33:02I mean it's got to help
33:03we talk about it
33:04all the time
33:05but with the kind of
33:06form that he's in
33:06at the moment
33:07if they fix what
33:08they needed to fix
33:09they were troubleshooting
33:10towards the end of that
33:11which is why he didn't
33:12get a lap in
33:12as we said at the start
33:13of the show
33:14then he could be
33:15in a good position here
33:15because he looks
33:16strong on the hard
33:17yeah look it was
33:18obviously a little bit
33:19unfortunate for him
33:19but I think you know
33:20when we're in
33:21you know the sets of
33:22regulations we have
33:23right now
33:23there's a lot of
33:24additional stuff
33:24going into the car
33:25a lot of additional
33:26software
33:26and it just kind of
33:27opens up opportunities
33:28for little niggles
33:29to come in like that
33:30I hope for him
33:31that they've sorted it out
33:32but I have to say
33:33I was in the car
33:33with Kimi yesterday
33:35and he honestly
33:36he was on the limit
33:37he's full of confidence
33:38and I think we'll see
33:39a big performance
33:40you're not a very good
33:40passenger are you
33:41I'm a terrible
33:42you'll see that
33:43tomorrow on Sunday
33:44I think
33:44terrible passenger
33:46for me this is exciting
33:48because watching practice
33:49I don't think anyone
33:50really maximized the car
33:52they all were pushing hard
33:53making mistakes here and there
33:54so it is anyone's
33:56you'd say Charles has the advantage
33:57because he's got a lap together
33:58but there's seven drivers
33:59I think that can really fight
34:00for this pole position
34:01and that's the good thing
34:02isn't it
34:03I mean it's going to be
34:04a development war
34:04as we said
34:05and it looks like Ferrari
34:06have gone away
34:06they've got the Macarena
34:07in that
34:08that is confirmed
34:09from Fred in the interim
34:10oh we're going to get to see
34:11a little bit of a Macarena
34:12not from you though Simon
34:14thankfully
34:14the Macarena from Red Bull
34:16they're not calling it
34:17you have a look at the Red Bull
34:18if you haven't joined
34:18if you haven't joined us
34:20for practice
34:20a little bit early
34:21it's absolutely unbelievable
34:23they've got their own version of it
34:24but Mercedes
34:27uncharacteristically
34:27were struggling
34:28they've locked out the front row
34:29for every race this season
34:31can they do the same
34:33for the sprint here
34:34in Miami
34:36not far away
34:37from finding out
34:38Miami sprint qualifying
34:39is next
34:40don't go anywhere
34:42stop
34:43keep watching
34:44keep watching
34:44yeah
34:44yeah
34:45let's keep watching
34:46okay
34:47yeah
