Housing Secretary Steve Reed says the Renters' Rights Act will "give people the security that the roof over their head is permanent." The Renters' Rights Act will reform the private rental sector in England by abolishing "no-fault" evictions and replacing fixed-term contracts with rolling periodic tenancies.

00:00Well, for far too long, renters in this country have been living in insecurity,
00:04never knowing when they're going to be kicked out of their home,
00:06never knowing when they're going to get yet another unaffordable rent rise.
00:11And we have to put a stop to that, because it's leading to high numbers of people becoming homeless,
00:16families in temporary accommodation, people sleeping rough on the streets.
00:19So the Renters' Rights Act, which comes into force on Friday,
00:24is the biggest increase in renters' rights that we've seen for a generation.
00:27It will ban unfair, so-called no-fault evictions,
00:32where landlords kick people out just so that they can put the rent up for new tenants.
00:35It bans mid-year rent increases or unfair rent increases.
00:40It bans landlords from discriminating against families who are on benefits or families with children.
00:48And it gives tenants the right to request to have a pet come and live with them.
00:53Now, these are huge changes that will stop people becoming homeless
00:57and give people the security that the roof over the head is permanent.
