The WA government has rejected calls to remove no-grounds evictions. That's despite a new report finding the state has made little progress on reforms aimed at protecting renters. The report found WA is the second-worst performing jurisdiction in the nation when it comes to renters' rights.

00:23About 30% of Western Australians live in rentals.
00:26But a new report from Australia's peak housing body, National Shelter, says WA sits near the bottom of the list in delivering stronger protections.

00:44In WA and the Northern Territory, landlords can evict tenants for no reason if they give notice.
00:50And for years the WA government has resisted calls for change, saying it wasn't the right time.

01:07but also still attracting people to invest to build new homes that contribute to the rental market.
01:14All of the other states that have got rid of no grounds are operating fine without it.

01:23Advocates say the housing shortage is putting renters in an increasingly precarious position.
