00:00The AI startup Manus was once a high-profile success story. Now it's turning into a cautionary
00:06tale. Chinese authorities on Monday ordered Meta to unwind its $2 billion acquisition of the
00:12company. Manus' founders got their start in China, but relocated their headquarters to Singapore last
00:18year. The startup's hit agentic AI services can operate autonomously when given directions.
00:24That's an especially promising new avenue for AI tech. Although the deal was announced months ago,
00:30Beijing said simply it wasn't allowing foreign investment in Manus in accordance with laws and
00:35regulations. That, along with other recent regulatory moves, creates new uncertainty for startup founders
00:42in China who might also consider moving their operations abroad. And it means global investors
00:49might be more skeptical of investing in AI firms with Chinese roots. It's a fresh challenge for
00:55Meta, too, which is racing against its rivals for AI dominance. If they're unable to keep Manus' tech
01:01and talent, that dents their progress. The move to undo the deal also shows just how important
01:07emerging AI technologies are in the geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China.
