00:00The Supreme Court struck down President Trump's executive order seeking to restrict birthright
00:04citizenship, rejecting a central plank of the Trump administration's immigration agenda.
00:09I was in this very spot back in April when President Trump became the first sitting
00:13president in modern history to attend oral arguments in person for this case.
00:18But the decision is not surprising. We got indications from the justices that they very
00:23likely were going to rule this way. In fact, President Trump himself indicated that he
00:27didn't think the justices were going to side with his argument. The case centered on the
00:32executive order that President Trump signed on his very first day in office, which sought to
00:37restrict birthright citizenship to those with at least one parent who was a U.S. citizen or green
00:41card holder, meaning even the newborn children of those on temporary visas would not be eligible.
00:47But it came down to five words in the 14th Amendment Citizenship Clause, which says all
00:52persons born in the U.S. and, quote, subject to the jurisdiction thereof are U.S. citizens.
00:57And we saw the Supreme Court uphold that longstanding legal precedent today.
01:01The ruling had the potential to impact the nearly 255,000 children that are born to
01:06undocumented immigrants in the U.S. each year.
