US reaffirms support for Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara

US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau reiterated Washington's support for Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara in Rabat, urging a "swift" resolution to a conflict that has been ongoing since 1975.

00:09The United Nations has also backed Morocco's autonomy proposal for the region.

00:27to that conflict that has gone on for an unacceptable time since 1975 when I was only 11 years old.
00:35This can't be that these kind of conflicts last beyond the lifespan of human beings.
00:45Morocco's proposal would give Western Sahara autonomy over social and economic policy, budget and taxation.
00:53But Rabat would retain control over foreign relations, the judiciary and currency.

01:08the sole framework of the Initiative for Autonomy under Moroccan Sovereignty presented by the Kingdom of Morocco.
01:19The U.S. recognized Morocco's claim over Western Sahara in 2020 in return for Rabat's rapprochement with Israel.
01:27The pro-independence Polisario front resumed its fight for self-determination the same year.
