Named after its minimalist, lego enthusiast owner, Alex was meticulously designed by William Chan of Spacedge Designs to suit the very particular style and needs of his client. Given complete creative freedom, Chan removed all the internal walls of the 47sm public housing flat, creating one continuous open space with a series of seamless wood-look laminate cabinets, chosen for their easy maintenance and pattern consistency, that appear to float off the ground. Hidden inside this cabinetry are carefully curated functional zones including a desk to work and build lego at, as well as a compact kitchen, laundry and concealed fridge. Blue tubular hardware and a matching light fixture that runs the length of the living room, along with a wall mounted, fluorescent orange “coin bank” designed by Chan and included on recommendation from a feng shui master, are the only pops of colour in the otherwise clean and crisp space.

00:04Alex was looking for a minimalist design with a wood-filled interior and a desk for building his
00:10Lego. This kind of design is not every one cup of tea. You know, some may like it,
00:18but most of them, they will feel differently. This flat is a new 14-story HDB, public housing,
00:28flats in the west of Singapore.
00:37Bukipatok is a housing estate with a variety of private dwellings,
00:41with all the necessary facilities and amenities. It was built in 2019.
00:54My name is William Chan. I'm the founder and chief designer of Space Search Designs.
00:59My client Alex, a bachelor who works in the finance industry, lives in this apartment.
01:05He gives us basically creative freedom on everything. We actually design everything
01:09centred on Alex himself. He's a very disciplined guy whereby he don't really have much things.
01:16This space is very art gallery, very modern. It is unconventional.
01:25When I told him that your space can actually have some possibilities in turning it into something
01:30more interesting and more specific to your needs. You know, that you can actually optimize and maximize
01:36the space, but we can do it minimal.
01:41We removed the wall between the old bedroom and living room. Close off one entrance to the bathroom
01:47and move the kitchen to the living room and replace it with a shower and vanity.
01:52Since Alex loves Lego, we repurposed the existing home shelter into a Lego gallery. The door is 180 degree
02:01inches and without removing the door, we actually hide it with a new cabinet.
02:10Based on the new layout, Alex actually approached the feng shui master to work according to our layout.
02:18My design was based on the idea that the continuous open space with a well thought up design is the
02:24most suitable for a single occupant in a small flat. At the entrance of the flat, there's a corridor
02:34straight ahead that leads to the main space and the private areas such as the toilet and shower are
02:40on the right. To the left is the Lego gallery. This space was originally a bomb shelter that is
02:46still functional today. They need one bomb shelter for every household when you build a new residential
02:52project in Singapore. So we decided to use that space for Lego gallery and it's a perfect fit for that
02:59size. As you walk through the corridor towards the main living area, you are surrounded by floor to
03:07ceiling with light walls and storage. They are raised off the ground and appear to float. We specially
03:15saw the hinges for the cabinets so they were as streamlined as possible.
03:21The living room is L-shaped and wraps around the sleeping area. There's a desk that folds out so Alex
03:27can do his work and can fold away to reduce clutter when not in use.
03:34The super single size bed is housed within a cabin like enclosure. Hanging lights is actually USB and battery operated.
03:45The blue box is a versatile item that functions as storage and seating and stores under the bed when not
03:52in use.
03:59The coin box representing wealth was placed at the location based on Alex Feng Shui requirements.
04:05I designed the wall hung coin box. The shape and high energy color is one modern art piece in this
04:11landscape of straight lines.
04:15The kitchen and pantry is hidden behind a door on the other side of the room. The walls around the
04:21kitchen and the tap were accented in dark blue. This color is used throughout the flat in order to give
04:26contrast to the light wood look of the cabinets. Blue is also one of color whereby Feng Shui recommends it.
04:34It is good for his well-being. Due to Feng Shui reason, the stove cabinet is facing on the other
04:40side of the cabinets.
04:42Alex don't use kitchen so much so we decided to make this kitchen cabinet smaller, just enough for his daily
04:49light cooking meals.
04:53The light actually is an uplighting whereby it starts glaring to eyes and has very soft lighting effects and embells.
05:00We decided to introduce here from wall to wall, horizontal strip, you know, just to appear like an artwork.
05:09From the entrance, the same micro cement floor flows seamlessly into the bathroom with a slight downward slope towards the
05:17shower area.
05:20Since Alex lives here by himself, there was no need to close up the shower which visually opens up the
05:26space.
05:26When you look at the fittings that I chose, we selected Vola which is very minimal and very iconic design
05:33which is using tube.
05:36There's a floating vanity with a sink with built-in storage for clothes and personal items.
05:44As the vanity sits higher off the floor, there's room for Alex shoes underneath.
05:53Across from the vanity is a room with a toilet, laundry and also a hidden fridge.
06:01There's a fairly large existing window in the toilet area.
06:05The intention of covering up the WC windows is to be in line with my wood-look cabinet wall coverings,
06:12while at the same time to unlock ventilations and lights in.
06:16The window next to the shower allows the space to dry quickly.
06:20Due to privacy, we actually introduced vertical blinds.
06:23So it's basically waterproof and highly functional for wet areas and shower areas.
06:28We actually used cream colours for the shower area as compared to the white colours for the living areas.
06:35In the space for one, there's technically no need for doors within the flat.
06:39We introduced this glass panel to cordonel, the icon usage just strictly for bedroom areas.
06:47Even though we do not have double volume height,
06:51there's still ways to reimagine it and to create something unconventional.
06:57But most importantly, I think it has to be functional.
07:01Small size, small space can sometimes create wonders.
07:05In fact, if let's say you can actually think of it without any boundaries,
07:10you can do a lot of fantastic spaces and design.
07:20error Lewy means a path that навер Zach focuses on being in a dead body,
07:25tell Scott's experience,
07:25it doesn't work better for one like this.
07:28Now, this rotation gives you aniff kind of dig work,
07:28living reverse core and charge it up.
07:28And this whole process can be dominated by cells that can also whichever or replace it.
07:28It's also a unit of blancor using this complex fluid,
07:28in fact, the Copyright Transcred cantidad is tadi.
07:28Now, it'll be that the space within two units integrated space.
07:28That's what I mean with that.
07:29You don't know, as hard to keep the same one though.
07:29it'll be MR if I ask for the rain.
07:29So I can 그럴 your percepción for it.
07:30So you can't see them on,
07:30You
