Flat Eleven was originally part of a larger home belonging to the parents of owner/architect Claudio Pierattelli, in a historic building opposite the famous Palazzo Pitti in central Florence. Creating a truly separate home, he added an independent entrance, a kitchen, and opened up the space to allow rooms to flow from one into another. Repainting the new apartment and cabinetry white, as well as replacing the flooring with a lighter, semi-gloss French herringbone parquet, allowing light to bounce throughout the home and illuminate the entire flat. The new kitchen features a full complement of hidden appliances, as well as concealed extraction and a floating two person dining table. A refurbished cantilevered staircase leads from these bright, open living spaces to a redesigned loft bedroom, where a glass balustrade allows light to still reach the bedroom. With this redesign, Claudio converted a dim set of living spaces into a contemporary, bright and open home perfect for minimal city living.

00:01The flat is located in the center of Florence.
00:06We think it was built in the 12th century.
00:11I wanted the house to be a precious corner of tranquility in the city,
00:17a place where people could find and express themselves.
00:21It's right in front of Palazzo Pitti,
00:24in a residential area which is called Santo Spirito.
00:29It is the most authentic part of the city
00:32where among the narrow alleys
00:35you can find many workshops of restores, capitals, loot makers and blacksmiths.
00:50My name is Claudio Peratelli
00:53and I'm a partner architect at Peratelli Architettura Studio in Florence.
00:59The building is residential, so there are different kinds of people living in there, including me and my partner.
01:08This flat was a part of a bigger apartment of my parents' house
01:13and I decided to divide it and make an independent entrance
01:18and create completely a new style and a new atmosphere inside.
01:26This portion of the house was originally a living area with a bathroom.
01:30I realized a new kitchen and realized a new made-to-measure interior furniture
01:37and changed the materials and the colors.
01:42To help the flat breathe, I didn't want to have furniture all over the place
01:47and restrict the freedom of movement.
01:50I wanted to have an open space, free and easy to use.
01:56It was important for each of the areas to flow from one room to another.
02:02I chose white as the main color for the walls and the cabinets
02:06with wood floors, blue feature walls and black accents.
02:16As you enter the flat, there is a bright window which brings in a lot of natural light to this
02:23narrow space.
02:24I also added a simple bar to hand-coat.
02:29Walking further in, the area surprisingly opened to a double-height space.
02:34Here you can see right through the arch to the kitchen and up the stairs to the loft bedroom.
02:41This added contrast between the vertical double-height and the horizontal living area.
02:48The living room is down three steps of stairs.
02:51It has two different heights due to the loft.
02:56The first half is higher, so I installed white liquid floating shelf
03:01that goes right up toward the ceiling.
03:03The highest shelf can actually be reached from the loft.
03:08Below the shelf is lacquered wooden bench that stretch across the length of the wall.
03:14It forms the base for the larger made-to-measure sofa with denim cushion on one side.
03:20And on the other side, there is a built-in planted box.
03:25Since the walls of the apartment are not parallel, I decided to design the sofa
03:31with one side shorter than the other to make the room more symmetrical.
03:37We kept the area under the staircase simple, where there is a wall-mounted TV, my bike and a stature.
03:47A round arch characterizes the space, giving depth and proportion to the area.
03:54The arch becomes a scenic backdrop framing both kitchen and living room.
04:01Through the indigo arch is the kitchen.
04:04The cabinets and appliances sit along the back wall in white lacquered wood.
04:09It is fully featured with a large sink, an articulating tap, an induction hob, an oven, a hidden dishwasher, fridge
04:19and a washing machine.
04:20There is also a white marble splash back in the back of the kitchen.
04:26Since I wanted the kitchen to be as clean as possible, I decided to put the air extractor in the
04:33fold ceiling on top of the sink.
04:36A small floating dining table sits across from the kitchen.
04:40The floating design frees up space underneath so we can comfortably seat two people and the chairs can be pushed
04:48all the way in when not in use.
04:51Up a step and through the door of the kitchen, there is a walk-in closet and the bathroom.
04:59The bathroom is compact but has everything you need.
05:02A tub with shower, wash basin, a toilet, a bidet and some shelves.
05:12The sleeping area is up the cantilever staircase which was originally there and I just changed the colors and the
05:21finishes.
05:22Because I really loved the fact that it is floating and not wasting so much space.
05:29We wanted to keep the loft minimal so it is simply furnished with a double bed and a bedside table.
05:36The jewel of this flat is the tiny window at the bedroom through which you can admire the dome of
05:44the Renaissance Church of Santo Spirito.
05:48A glass bellows allows lights to enter the room and harmoniously keep the flow throughout the rooms.
05:56The loft has access to a large walk-in closet and more storage for all of my things.
06:02It makes up more than half of the side of the loft.
06:06It helps me to keep the overall space tidy and uncluttered.
06:11The floor throughout the apartment is a French herringbone parquet.
06:16Its light natural finish and semi-reflective surface helps illuminate the whole flat.
06:25Usually when we design a little apartment we decide to bring as much light as possible inside.
06:31It will make the space feel bigger.
06:36Living in the city has a lot of advantages because you have everything you need just around the corner.
06:43You have your family and your friends close to you and you can also live the life of your neighborhood.
06:50You made the air radio for the house but not pre- contar.
06:55The camera's living outside.
06:58It's kind of not音 good.
07:01It's not the ability to move the way and they check the机.
07:02It's in the house of your parents' families struggling to do.
07:05it's not an wound.
