00:17And Clara Ampho.
00:19Lots coming up tonight.
00:20From a musical One Big Thank You to a medical drama
00:23hailed as one of the most authentic ever made.
00:26Plus, we'll be celebrating the return of a much-loved crime series.
00:29Yes, tomorrow, Beyond Paradise is back on BBC One
00:32and later we'll be joined by two of its stars,
00:35Chris Marshall and Dylan Llewellyn.
00:37So they're going to be revealing some of the latest mysteries
00:39to hit the fictional town of Shipton Abbott.
00:42Oh, can't wait.
00:43And from solving crimes to saving lives,
00:45because we'll be introducing you to the smash-hit medical drama
00:48The Pit, which follows the high-pressure world of emergency care.
00:52And the show has become a huge success in America,
00:55picking up five Emmys and two Golden Globes.
00:57And now, from today, you can watch it here in the UK.
01:00We are obsessed.
01:02And joining us is its leading man, former ER star Noah Wiley,
01:06alongside his co-star Catherine Lanassa.
01:08They're going to be telling us how this grippy new drama
01:11is so realistic, it's even had the seal of approval
01:13from real-life medical professionals.
01:15Nice.
01:15Plus, in tonight's One Big Thank You,
01:18we meet the inspirational Kerry from Rochester,
01:20who dedicates her time to giving everyone the chance
01:23to access performing arts.
01:25Yes, and later we will see the truly magical moment
01:28she takes centre stage as the cast of Sixth the Musical
01:31give her a very special surprise.
01:34Massive.
01:35One big thank you!
01:37Oh, no, God!
01:38Really?
01:40Oh, they're my favourite.
01:41Such a lovely moment.
01:42You do not want to miss it.
01:44So, as you can see, lots coming up.
01:45But first, with the clocks going forward this weekend,
01:48we're starting tonight by talking about the importance of sleep,
01:51because whilst the change brings light at evenings,
01:52which we love, it also does mean one hour less in bed.
01:56Definitely not my favourite.
01:57It's something that you'll all know about
01:59if you're one of the millions of people
02:01who now track their sleep.
02:03But does all that data do us more harm than good?
02:05Well, Richie Genderson has been to find out.
02:09As a nation, we're obsessed with our sleep,
02:13and many of us want to keep up to date
02:15on exactly how much we're getting.
02:18There's now an abundance of monitors
02:19telling us how long and how deeply we sleep.
02:23Trackers like these
02:25can give us an insight into our sleep patterns.
02:29But what I really want to know
02:30is whether recording all this information
02:33is actually any good for us.
02:36Ten years ago, mum-of-four Becky
02:38was struggling so badly with insomnia
02:40that her family intervened.
02:43I had a, what's called a white night,
02:45and you don't sleep at all.
02:46Then I didn't sleep the next night,
02:48and that was the beginning of a horrendous five years.
02:51And my son said,
02:54Mum, I really think you need to get some help.
02:57So I just Googled sleep therapist.
02:59How did you get better, Becky?
03:01She explained to me that
03:02it's all about reducing your sleep window.
03:04Couldn't go to bed before half eleven,
03:05and I had to get up at ten past six.
03:08But alongside that,
03:09you never stay in bed after half an hour
03:12when you haven't slept.
03:13For some people,
03:15sleep trackers can be useful,
03:17but Becky received some surprise advice
03:19from her therapist.
03:20Well, she was very much of the opinion
03:24that they don't help
03:25because she's trying to stop you obsessing about sleep.
03:28Yeah.
03:29An estimated one in every ten to twenty of us
03:32struggle with insomnia.
03:35Lindsay Browning has spent the last twenty years
03:37helping insomniacs like Becky.
03:40I want her take on monitoring sleep.
03:42There are so many trackers.
03:44Could that help with insomnia?
03:45For some people,
03:46they can be really, really helpful.
03:48You might notice a pattern.
03:49If it's helpful for you
03:50to give you some extra data, fantastic.
03:52If you're finding it just causing you more stress,
03:54then just, you know, leave them on the side.
03:56When somebody starts to worry about their sleep,
03:59you're so anxious about not sleeping
04:01that then you can't sleep.
04:03Monitoring yourself at home is one thing,
04:05but there's a whole academic field of research
04:08in what goes on in our brains at night.
04:10And I'm going to be a guinea pig.
04:13So, tonight, I'm not heading to my comfy bed
04:16or even a hotel room.
04:19I'm at the University of Surrey
04:21in its state-of-the-art sleep lab
04:23where scientists are going to be monitoring me overnight.
04:28The six-bedroom facility is a state-of-the-art lab
04:31that uses polysonography,
04:33a sophisticated way of monitoring our brains.
04:37Marta Pineda is one of the researchers.
04:39Well, then, so can I go and get in bed, then, now?
04:41Not yet, no. I need to get you all wired up.
04:44The lab allows scientists to control every variable,
04:47while electrodes placed on the head record brainwaves.
04:51You know what? I'm tired,
04:52but how am I going to get to sleep with all this, huh?
04:55We'll find out.
04:57See you in the morning.
05:01It's late, and I've had a busy day.
05:03Despite the sensors, I soon drop off.
05:06In the morning, it's over to Professor Dirk Jan Dyke,
05:10who heads up the research centre here
05:12to analyse my data from the lab.
05:15The data show you have all the brainwaves
05:18we would expect to see in a good, healthy, young sleeper.
05:22Good to know I'm a good sleeper,
05:24but I'd like to know what else the research can show.
05:27What have you found doing all this study?
05:30Sleep problems are often a predictor
05:33of mental health problems.
05:36In people with depression,
05:37there will be more REM sleep, actually,
05:40more of that rapid eye movement.
05:42With dementia, sleep is also altered.
05:45There may be less rapid eye movement sleep.
05:48Sleep tells us something about brain health.
05:51But research from the lab
05:53has also revealed insights for everybody.
05:55It turns out that when you see quite a bit of daylight
05:59during the day, you will sleep better at night.
06:03OK. For all of us?
06:05That's true for people living with dementia.
06:07It's true for older people.
06:09It's true for younger people.
06:12Research like this could offer all of us
06:14some new insights into getting some much-needed shut-eye.
06:17And as we're doing your own tracking,
06:19it's interesting, you've got to handle with care.
06:22Oh, and sweet dreams.
06:25Oh, I love it. Thanks, Richie.
06:27I don't know how he slept with all those wires around him.
06:29Lots of great tips there.
06:31All right, then. Time now to say hello
06:32to tonight's fabulous guests.
06:34Please welcome the stars from Beyond Paradise,
06:36Chris Marshall and Dylan Llewellyn,
06:37plus the Emmy-winning actors
06:39from the new medical drama, The Pit,
06:41Catherine Lanasa and Noah Wiley.
06:43Yes!
06:43Welcome, welcome, welcome.
06:45Chris, we're going to start with you.
06:47I understand that sleep monitors
06:48aren't really your thing.
06:49No, no, I don't need anything else to obsess over.
06:54Yeah, I'm too busy looking for the earbud in the bed
06:57in the morning when you wake up
06:58and you can't find it
07:01and you're looking underneath the pillows
07:02and stuff like that.
07:03I don't think sleep monitors are for me.
07:04No, fair enough.
07:05I'm sure you're going to sleep very well tonight.
07:07Yeah, I will.
07:07Especially on The One Show, you know?
07:09Well, later on, we are going to be talking
07:10to Chris and Dylan about the new series
07:12of Beyond Paradise.
07:14But first, today is a really big day
07:15in the world of TV
07:16because a brand new streaming service
07:18has launched right here in the UK.
07:20It's called HBO Max.
07:21It's going to be the home of Harry Potter
07:22alongside another show that's been creating
07:25a huge buzz,
07:26the award-winning medical drama, The Pit.
07:28Yes, it stars Catherine and Noah here
07:30and follows the lives of frontline emergency staff
07:32working in a functional hospital in Pittsburgh.
07:36Now, the entire series unfolds
07:37over the course of a single day
07:38with each episode capturing
07:40just one intense hour
07:41of the chaotic 15-hour shift.
07:44Intense it is.
07:45Now, it's already been a major hit in America
07:46and from today,
07:47the whole of Series 1 is available to watch.
07:50And before we chat,
07:51to Catherine and Noah,
07:52let's take more of a look.
07:5552 in the waiting room
07:56and it's not even seven.
07:58We're always working the shift, by the way.
07:59Cut him a little slack today.
08:01It's the anniversary of Dr. Addison's death.
08:03You've got some new faces with us today.
08:05Hi, come on over.
08:05I'm so happy to be here.
08:06Talk to me at the end of the day.
08:08Is it always this busy?
08:09No, it gets a lot busier.
08:11Suction?
08:13I'm not sitting down.
08:14Welcome to The Pit.
08:15Let's go save some lives.
08:17Tier 1 trauma now.
08:19More of morphine.
08:20I'm going to stop the bleeding.
08:21You learn to accept it and find balance.
08:23You can't block your feelings forever.
08:25Oh, you'd be surprised.
08:27Yes!
08:30We are truly obsessed.
08:32I'll start with you, Noah.
08:33This series is incredible.
08:34So you play Dr. Robbie.
08:36I do.
08:36Can you tell us a little bit more about him
08:38and where we find him
08:39during this emergency shift in the department?
08:41He is like a lot of practitioners,
08:44somebody who's been working nonstop through COVID
08:46and never really took a break to analyze
08:48what a harrowing experience that was for him.
08:50So he's a bit of an undiagnosed PTSD survivor
08:53who doesn't know quite how high the water levels
08:57are rising over him until this shift really triggers him.
09:00Yeah.
09:01And now, Catherine, you play charge nurse Dana,
09:03who's a bit of a matriarch in the team.
09:05And you've described her as being a bit
09:07like a basketball coach.
09:08Yeah.
09:09You know, the first episodes,
09:10there were two different traumas going on
09:12and there's glass doors on them.
09:14And I was kind of going back and forth
09:16to see, like, did everyone have what they needed?
09:19And I had this, like, stress ball as one of the props.
09:21And I was like, I feel like a basketball coach.
09:23It was like I was at Phil Hendry.
09:25Yeah.
09:25I just felt like I suddenly was like,
09:26I realized I had the body language of a basketball coach.
09:29And it's kind of what she is.
09:30She's like making sure,
09:31does everyone have what they need
09:33so they can play their part right?
09:34She makes you feel safe.
09:36That's what I love about it.
09:36She's like tough love personified in a great way.
09:40Now, Noah, lots of viewers will have got to know you
09:43as Dr. Carter from ER.
09:45And it was actually fans of that series
09:46that essentially brought you back into the medical world, right?
09:49Very true.
09:50Fans and people that were inspired
09:52to go into that line of work from watching that show,
09:54reaching out to me during the pandemic
09:56and telling me how difficult it was for them
09:59was the catalyst for me reaching out to John Wells,
10:01the executive producer, and to Scott Gemmell.
10:03And we all sort of independently had the same idea
10:06that there was another story to tell post-COVID
10:10about what was happening in American health care.
10:12And we were all excited to work with each other again
10:14and tell a new story in an old way.
10:17Yeah.
10:17Brilliant.
10:18Now, Catherine,
10:18now this show is not for the faint-hearted.
10:20My wife definitely was not prepared
10:22for some of those early surgery scenes.
10:24But you all had to go to a medical boot camp
10:26to prepare, right?
10:27Yes, yes.
10:28What did that all involve?
10:30Well, some of us tried to learn to sew things.
10:34Very good.
10:34I'm not playing a doctor.
10:35I'm not good at sewing, but I can trach.
10:37So we learned to, like, do basic medical techniques.
10:40I learned along with them,
10:41even though I don't do any of them in the show, thank God.
10:43In fact, when we get to a scene later in the first season
10:48when they do need my help,
10:49they were speaking to me, like,
10:50oh, then you hang a bag.
10:51I'm like, hold on, what's hang a bag?
10:53It literally means, like, take some glucose
10:55and, like, stick it up there on a hook.
10:57Like, the most basic thing.
10:59I'm like, I didn't know how to do any of it.
11:00I'm like, you've got to back me up.
11:02Oh, man, I love the fact that they actually learn stuff.
11:04Well, this is it.
11:05A true actor's experience, you know,
11:07going method, essentially.
11:08Yeah.
11:09Now, as we mentioned, it is a very intense watch,
11:11but it has been praised greatly by the medical community.
11:14How does it make you feel, I guess,
11:16you know, getting that support from them
11:18and, like, you know, just the lengths you guys have gone to make it?
11:20It's everything.
11:21That was the population we were trying to win over
11:24and honour initially.
11:25And even more rewarding than their reaction,
11:29family's reaction,
11:30people who are related to people who do this kind of work
11:32who now have context in a way that they maybe not had before.
11:36Yeah, yeah.
11:37And when it came to making it, like, that realistic,
11:39you know, what were you practising on?
11:41We're really intrigued by just the song and dance of it all.
11:44Well, we have a very full team of technical advisers.
11:48We've got board-certified ER doctors on our writing staff
11:51and on the set every episode,
11:52trauma nurses all over the set
11:54who are there to show us how to hold the things,
11:56how to say the things.
11:57And they choreograph it.
11:58And more importantly, how to feel emotionally,
12:01you know, based on your level of education and experience
12:04so that everybody's not singing the same note,
12:06but everybody's character is plotted on their course
12:10where they should be.
12:11Brilliant.
12:12Love that.
12:13Now, Dylan, we need to speak to you
12:14about your experience in medical dramas.
12:17So, Catherine, Noah,
12:18there's a big old medical drama in the UK
12:20that we love called Holby City.
12:22You, on the flip side, Dylan, played a patient.
12:25That's it.
12:26Pretty tough gig.
12:27Yeah, it's not on the same level as you.
12:29Yeah.
12:30I didn't have to learn anything.
12:31Were you in a coma?
12:33It's not on the same level as you're in a coma.
12:35You see the coma right now.
12:38I got to lie down lots, which is nice.
12:40Yeah.
12:41And, God, that was like 13 years ago.
12:44I've still been playing a teenager.
12:47But, yeah, no, it was an amazing experience.
12:50And, yeah, you really learn a lot in those jobs, you know.
12:54It's really, really fascinating.
12:56Yeah.
12:57No, no, I mean, you're incredibly experienced now.
12:59You're very familiar with the medical jargon.
13:01But in the early ER days, there was a real-life emergency
13:05that didn't quite go to plan, did it?
13:07I think I know what you're referring to.
13:10And it was when George Clooney, Eric LaSalle, Anthony Edwards,
13:13and I all went across the street from the studio to have lunch.
13:17And we had Anthony Edwards' infant son, Bailey, with us,
13:20who started to choke on a French fry.
13:22We're all wearing our doctor costumes with our stethoscopes.
13:25And we noticed that the kid is choking.
13:26And we all kind of panic and don't know quite what to do.
13:29And it was the busboy walking by who was very level-headed and very cool
13:34and put his finger in the kid's mouth and fished the French fry out.
13:37And the rest of us looked around the room and thought,
13:41we should probably pay the check.
13:43We should probably leave a big check in the day.
13:47Well, thankfully, you play a doctor very, very well compared to that situation.
13:50Yes, I've gotten better.
13:52You know, you can catch Noah and Catherine in series one of The Pit,
13:55which is out today on HBO Max.
13:57And episodes of the second series will be available weekly.
14:00Yeah, still to come, Chris and Dylan bring us the latest mysteries
14:03from their cosy crime drama, Beyond Paradise.
14:06But now it's time for tonight's one big thank you.
14:08And this week we are celebrating the brilliant Kerry from Rochester.
14:11So in a bit we're going to be seeing the moment
14:13where some of the cast of Six the Musical surprised her
14:16with a really special performance.
14:18But first, here's why Kerry is so inspirational.
14:25Kerry deserves this one big thank you
14:28because she really is one in a million.
14:31While working as a college drama teacher,
14:34Kerry Nell saw that many adults with additional needs
14:37were denied access to the arts.
14:39So she left her full-time job
14:40and founded the proud performing arts company.
14:43She's the most lovely, kindest person.
14:48It really brought out my confidence
14:50and pushed me out of my comfort zone.
14:52Eight years later, it's grown to more than 80 members,
14:55all adults with learning disabilities and autism.
14:58They stage musicals, plays and an annual Christmas pantomime.
15:02For many members, it's the only place they get to perform.
15:05It really has helped me grow my confidence
15:08and I feel like a different,
15:10but a really growing version of myself.
15:12And Kerry really helps you feel very supportive.
15:15The group also provides a vital place
15:17for people to get together and make friends.
15:20It's like a second home, all like family.
15:23It's one big, happy community.
15:26She's very inclusive.
15:28It doesn't matter what disability you've got.
15:32The group is funded by grants,
15:34members' fees, ticket sales
15:36and support from friends and family,
15:38all rallied by Kerry.
15:40Proud Pack really is something special.
15:43You know when you walk through the doors,
15:44you know when you meet the other members
15:46and you know when you meet Kerry.
15:47We love making you proud,
15:49but you also make us proud.
15:54Kerry has created such a joyful space
15:56for people to shine,
15:58so we thought it was only right
15:59to give her a moment in the spotlight.
16:00And as she's a lover of musical theatre,
16:03we had just a place in mind.
16:08For this week's One Big Thank You,
16:10we are at London's Wardville Theatre,
16:12home to the West End award-winning hit,
16:15Sixth The Musical,
16:16a very modern take on the life
16:17of Henry VIII's Six Wives.
16:24Kerry is a massive fan
16:27and today she's going to get
16:28her own private performance.
16:30The whole of the cast and crew
16:32are in on our surprise.
16:34As actors,
16:35we understand the importance
16:36of being able to have a place
16:38to express yourself.
16:39So when The One Show told us
16:40all about Kerry
16:41and the incredible work she's been doing,
16:43we knew we had to invite her here
16:45and thank her in person.
16:46Kerry's partner Richard
16:47is also working for us
16:49and wearing a hidden mic.
16:50He's told her
16:51he's received some free tickets
16:53to see the show,
16:53but they need to collect them
16:55in person.
16:56What she doesn't know
16:57is that we've heard
16:58all about her
16:59and we've been working
17:00on a surprise.
17:01The cast take their places backstage
17:03and Richard and Kerry
17:04arrive at the box office.
17:06Can I help?
17:07Yeah, home to come and see
17:08about the show.
17:09Yes, do you have tickets
17:10for this evening?
17:11Not yet, no.
17:12As the crew direct Kerry
17:13towards the auditorium,
17:15James to Eddie,
17:16they're on their way
17:16up the stairs.
17:18Backstage,
17:18the cast are waiting
17:19for their cue.
17:21Kerry is led
17:22to the VIP box,

20:40who you can still see
20:41at the Vaudeville Theatre
20:42right here in London.
20:43Yes, and if there's someone
20:44you know who deserves
20:45a special surprise

20:50But now it is time
20:51to head to the Devonshire coast
20:52where Chris and Dylan
20:53have been busy tackling
20:55a fresh wave of mysteries
20:56as D.I. Humphrey
20:57and P.C. Kelby
20:58in crime drama
20:59Beyond Paradise.
21:00Yes, the Death in Paradise
21:02spin-off is back
21:03on our screens
21:04tomorrow night
21:04but before we talk
21:05about it
21:06let's take a look
21:06at what's in store.
21:08We're downsizing
21:09for the future.
21:10The decision about
21:11who to lose
21:12all yours.
21:13What about the fact
21:14that he died
21:14in exactly the way
21:15described in his own book?
21:16You're thinking it's murder.
21:17What a plot, second.
21:19What house?
21:20We're really doing this
21:21aren't we?
21:22Big new adventure.
21:26Lovely, lovely, lovely.
21:27People just are
21:28obsessed with this show
21:29and for good reason.
21:29It's back,
21:30even more mysteries
21:31to solve
21:31but away from your work
21:33your character Chris
21:33look, Humphrey
21:34he recently tied the knot
21:35how is married life
21:36treating him?
21:37Is he loving it?
21:38Well yes
21:38so now Humphrey and Martha
21:39have tied the knot
21:40and they're married
21:41there's not the
21:42will they, won't they
21:43drama going on
21:44but this being Humphrey
21:45there's a lot more
21:45dramas following him
21:47including as you can see
21:48on the screen
21:49a rather nautical drama
21:51that occurs pretty much
21:52at the beginning
21:53of season four
21:54so yeah
21:55drama's not too far away
21:56with Humphrey.
21:57Brilliant, I love it.
21:58Dylan, you play
22:00PC Kelby
22:01and just talk us
22:02through some of the
22:02mysteries that you're
22:03going to be solving
22:03this time around.
22:05Yeah, so
22:05for this season
22:07we've got a lot more
22:08folklore again
22:10which is great
22:10a lot of like
22:12treasure maps
22:13treasure maps of
22:14Ship the Nabbit
22:15there's a green man
22:16and a Morris dancing
22:19although we call it
22:20dark Morris dancing
22:21okay, what's that?
22:23so our Morris is the
22:24darker version of
22:25Morris dancing
22:25okay
22:26Chris is good
22:27Chris is good
22:27that's it
22:28Morris is evil queen
22:30it's been a long time
22:30to learn that
22:31that's it
22:33I'm here for it
22:34Chris, we've actually
22:35got a question from
22:36Hayley who says
22:37which of the new crimes
22:39was your personal
22:39favourite to film
22:40and what made it
22:42stand out for you?
22:43well, I mean
22:44I always love
22:45anything involving
22:47water
22:48and being in the
22:48water or on the
22:49water
22:49we've got a
22:50wonderful episode
22:52this season
22:53about mermaids
22:55so obviously
22:56that invariably
22:57involves a lot of
22:57water
22:59and yeah
23:00so that's always
23:01my favourite
23:02lovely
23:02and also mermaids

23:06you're investigating
23:06they're real in Devon
23:08exactly
23:09Dylan, it's fair to
23:10say that your
23:11character definitely
23:12gets a bit more
23:13into the action
23:13we saw him tearing
23:14through the town
23:15there
23:15he's not afraid
23:16to get his hands
23:17dirty is he
23:17Kelby
23:18I was going to say
23:18I've got a pace
23:19on that
23:19you shouldn't be
23:21impressed with
23:22yourself
23:22oh my Kel
23:23no no
23:24it's ok
23:26but no

23:34and they get me
23:35dirty for sure
23:36in this season
23:37I'm falling about
23:38in like a muddy
23:40dock area
23:41and yeah
23:42it took me a couple
23:43of showers
23:44to get the seaweed
23:45smell out of me
23:46so yeah
