00:05The Giants made a move to trade up and go get a wide receiver whose skill set is to go
00:10up and go get the football.
00:12And that's 6'4", 218 pounds, Malachi Fields out of Notre Dame.
00:17Check this out. You can call me crazy if you want to, but I think Jackson Dart, Malik Neighbors, and
00:22Fields have a chance to be the NFC East, Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, and Tee Higgins.
00:27Matt Nagy now has a big-bodied playmaker on the perimeter in his offense that is coming off of a
00:34career-high 17.5 yards per catch season,
00:37is one of only six FBF players with at least five touchdown catches in each of his last three seasons,
00:44and my man dominated all week at the Senior Bowl. Check the tape.
00:48It was a 4'6", 40 at the Combine that made Fields drop to the third round,
00:54but his game speed is going to show you that he's faster than a 4'6".
00:58But let's break down how Jackson Dart just got himself his Plaxico Burris and Imani Toomer on the perimeter
01:05in this Blue Rush draft player spotlight.
01:11Ladies and gentlemen, if I got too much energy on this one, it's because we get to finally break down
01:17a big-bodied receiver. Make big receivers great again, and this is exactly what Malachi Fields
01:24is going to do in the NFL and in this Giants offense. First, we'll just start off with his strength.
01:30Here's a strength that everyone knows. The guy has catch radius, can go up and make a play for the
01:37football.
01:38If you're a guy that, hey, maybe you lack some separation. I'm not saying he does or he doesn't,
01:44but there is nothing better for a quarterback than having a security blanket or weapon that you know
01:52you don't have to be that much on target with the football. You don't have to be precise or accurate
02:00with your ball placement. You can just throw it up there, and you got a receiver that's going to go
02:07eat where the Eagles eat. And this is Malachi Fields. This is his MO right here. He goes up
02:12and he attacks the football. At 6'4", I hate when I see guys go up for the football and
02:18they're still
02:19using their body. They're still trying to go up and catch it with their body. No, because you give
02:25a 6'1 corner, 6'2 corner, you now give them a chance to get their hands in there and
02:30make a play
02:31to dislodge that football. But when a 6'4, even 6'3, 6'3 plus receiver goes up, extends his
02:39arms,
02:40and uses his catch radius to attack the football, these DBs have zero chance to impact that play
02:47and to dislodge that ball. And you'll see on the tight. Had to show it again. You look at the
02:57body control. You look at the athleticism. You look at the elite way that he tracks the football
03:05and goes up for it. Extends with his hands. Now you see this DB is doing a great job trying
03:11to get his
03:12hands in there as well. But at 6'4 with long arms, you don't have a shot in heck to
03:19make a play
03:20at the catch point if you're a shorter DB when a 6'4, 6'5 receiver applies the proper technique
03:30and
03:30attacks the football. Now this right here just shows strong hands. Shows the ability to catch
03:37and pluck. Strong hands. Now if he had weaker hands, that's a tip ball or that's an incomplete pass.
03:45Again, you see the DB trying to get his hands in there even more. This dude, I don't know this
03:49dude,
03:49but he's doing a great job because when we catch the football as wide receivers, we're taught that
03:54the job's not finished. You still got to bring, one, you got to survive the fall. Two, you got to
04:00survive a pesky DB trying to get his hands in there to lodge it free at the last second. This
04:06DB,
04:06this is all you have left to try and enforce some sort of pass breakup or incomplete. But Malachi does
04:12a great job of turning away from the defender, securing the catch with strong hands and surviving
04:20the fall. We know about what he brings in the red zone. I mean, obviously 6'4 goes up for
04:28the football
04:28in the red zone. And I'm not just going to show you jump balls the entire, even though this is
04:33his
04:33MO. This is his strength. He can do more. But I'm just showing two plays off the bat that's going
04:39to
04:39show you guys how he can impact this Giants offense right away. Right away. And again,
04:46the red zone is somewhere that the Giants offense lacked in terms of getting the job done and getting
04:53six points instead of three points. Now you have a guy you can pair up outside of Malik Neighbors.
04:58Let's say Malik Neighbors is down here. You've got the defense eyes on Malik. You know he's going to
05:03get doubled. You know they're going to target that guy. But then you know what? We got one-on-one.
05:09We got
05:09a big guy versus a little guy. And most importantly, again, we got a big guy that goes and eats
05:16with the
05:16Eagles. He goes up at high altitude and attacks the football. This DB, this defender didn't stand a
05:24chance. And even better. Like, you look at the DB. He didn't even jump. So not only did he attack
05:29the
05:29football and catch it at the highest point, at the catch point, but again, this is proper technique
05:36when it comes to securing the catch. Grabbing it like it's a rebound and turning away from the
05:43defender. Now he's using his strength to survive the fall. Whichever last dislodge or a last attempt
05:51by this corner to try and dislodge the football can't happen because he's got strong hands. My
05:56man looks like Mitchell Robinson going up for an offensive rebound for the Knicks. Touchdown.
06:09All right. Watch it here because this is a guy that knows. I won't spend too much time, but this
06:16is a
06:16guy that knows I'm getting the rock right here. I'm getting this football. Gives a little hesitation
06:22off the line. Sticks him with that left foot to get the DB to lock his hips or to move
06:27a little bit
06:27because one thing we don't want to do as receivers when we're running this fade ball, we don't want to
06:33just commit to our stem. We don't want to run the fade right away. One, we're trying to buy time
06:39because he's on the six yard line and we know where we're going to catch this football. But two, we
06:44don't
06:44want this the defender to just give him nothing and for him to just latch on and try and ride
06:51us into
06:51the sideline and get underneath this football to make it a harder throw. No, he sticks him to the
06:57inside, gets the defender to move, attacks this outside, this left hand, because the right hand,
07:04the right arm bar isn't going to do much. We're going towards the outside. So the most dangerous
07:10hand that can kind of hold us up at the line of scrimmage is this left arm by this defender.
07:16And he attacks that with the club wipe. Pins gets that hand off. Remember, this right hand can get on.
07:23It's got nothing but back pad. You're not doing anything to us, especially at 6'4", 218, 220.
07:30Now he puts that right foot into the ground and again, holds his line, leaves space for this
07:37quarterback to throw this football, throw this fade. You see him holding the line, holding the line. Now,
07:42he just uses his strength and he goes up for the football. Doesn't fade back. Again, you look at all
07:48this space that he leaves that quarterback. So this defender isn't inside. When this ball comes down,
07:55it's harder to reach around and reach over a guy's back to come down with this football. But no,
08:00because he had proper route discipline and held his line and held his stem. He's able now to be a
08:07high
08:08jumper, put that right foot into the ground. And look, he's off the screen here. This guy,
08:12you got no chance. You got most or you got Malachi'd fields. Touchdown.
08:25All right. Let's show, let's show some route technique. Let's show some route tempo. Let's
08:30see him get separation and get in and out of his breaks. This is something that when you think Malachi
08:35fields, you're not thinking about his route technique and route fundamentals. That's not the first thing
08:42that pops out when you, when you talk about his skillsets and his attributes, but you normally
08:48don't do that for bigger receivers in general. But the guy has shown that he's got some, he's got some
08:54ability to drop, drop hips, drop weight and get in and out of his breaks. And you'll see that here
09:00on this little stop route that he runs. Look at the separation he has. And then as a plus gets
09:07freaky with
09:07it and gets you some yak. You don't think of him as a catch and run guy, but this is
09:13a big play
09:13just off the strength of him being able to get, get show speed off his stem off of him coming
09:21off the
09:22football, show some strength and throwing this defender by and then drop and wait and coming
09:29back to the football. Look at that. Boom. When he puts his foot into the ground, he's still waiting
09:34on, this ball should be thrown already. But look at the separation he has here just by having a little
09:40flyby with that right hand, not too much to where he gets called, but he's got just enough strength
09:45to what we say, aid that defender. And then he has enough suddenness to drop his hips, put that left
09:52foot into the football and now start coming back to the ball. Look at the separation here. This is a
09:58big
09:58receiver getting this type of separation on the route. You usually see, uh, little receivers,
10:05the little, little guys, your route technicians who get this type of separation. So now when he
10:10catches the football as six, four, two 20 now, and he's very athletic. Now he's got some wiggle room
10:17to make a guy miss. Here's the strength to make a guy miss. Get off me, little boy. And now,
10:27that's looking like Josh Hart in the paint going for a layup. Nixon six rumble, big man rumble.
10:36That's a big play right there off of a five, six yard route. So he's, I was with him in
10:41the
10:41Giants facility the other day. And I asked him, what's a part of your game, Malachi,
10:46that you feel as though is underrated that people don't talk about. And he said, he said it with his
10:51chest, the way my ability to get in and out of my breaks. Doesn't feel like he's getting
10:58enough credit when it comes to that, but you seem like a man on the mission to go and show
11:03the NFL
11:03that, Hey, I'm a guy. I I'm, I'm going to be a guy in the NFL for quite some time.
11:11All right. We got a deeper route, little man to man action right here. It looks like we're getting
11:15some sort of cover zero look, but these backers, they actually don't blitz on this,
11:20which is absolutely crazy. You got fourth and six. He runs the bang eight skinny post,
11:26um, uh, weird play, you know, but great, uh, weird play, but great outcome. So let's watch the
11:36route. Then I'll break it down. Got this quick skinny post bang eight, uh, gets vertical, gets his stem
11:42snaps. I don't know. Y'all got beef or something just completely robbed, robbed you for your catch
11:52and gets the touchdown here, but let's break down the route again. Cause it's fourth and six. I don't
11:57know what Boston college is doing right here, but now here's a route where you've got to win and
12:03you've got to win to the inside and just think this could be some sort of curl route. It could
12:08be some
12:08sort of dig route, but right here, they've got this post route on and that is not a bang eight
12:13because he would have gotten the ball right off of his, uh, right after he put his left foot into
12:18the ground right here. Ball would have been on a rope right there to him. Um, so it's not a
12:24bang eight,
12:24but with this cover zero look, I would expect this football to come out a little bit earlier,
12:29but it is what it is. All right. You've got man, you got man to man. Looks like he's inside
12:34right now.
12:34Looks like he's inside leverage. He's got the ins playing inside technique. And we at receivers,
12:40no one, we have to win to the inside too. We got to win as clean as possible. And three,
12:47if we get some sort of confrontation at the line or doing our, or during our route stem,
12:54we know we have to get back vertical after any collision and snap our left foot into the ground.
13:02And that's going to be our separation. I'll show you what I mean. So here gives a little hesitation
13:08at the line. But what I love is he gains ground while he's sizing up how this corner is going
13:14to
13:15play him. Remember we have to win to the outside, puts that left foot into the ground. It starts
13:22getting vertical. Now look where his right foot is as he starts to get vertical. He's at the top of
13:27the
13:27numbers. Now here, he's getting a little collision here. Now watch these next three to four. One,
13:34two, three, four. Watch these next four steps. So right foot, left foot, right foot, left foot snap.
13:42Watch how that creates the separation. So him knowing that now that I've declared to going to the inside,
13:49and I've got this DB now has his hips turned and kind of has his arms on me. I know
13:54instead of just getting
13:56washed into the inside to where this DB just plays this upfield shoulder and he kind of hangs on that
14:03upfield shoulder the entire time. Now watch him dig his head, drop his head, dig hard for that four steps
14:11and snap to get his separation. Two, three, snap. Now watch him pull away with the separation. Watch
14:18the snap. Watch what it does. Look at that. That separation. Now usually, again, usually on these
14:25bang eights, we expect this ball on us right now. And he shows you the catch radius where he'd be
14:31able
14:31to go get it. He'd be able to use his body to protect the throw on the catch. But for
14:38some reason,
14:39he just, a man threw, threw a deep ball. Two guys in one spot. This could go, this could be
14:45disaster.
14:46But this just shows, look at the, look at the concentration on the catch. You got three bodies
14:51around you here, including your teammate. Now look at the difference between him going for the football
14:57and his teammate going for the football. The teammate is waiting for it to fall into the bread basket.
15:02Malachi Fields is attacking the football. So he has an attack the rock mentality. And if,
15:10when you attack the rock, nothing but good things happen. And you can see on that play here, touchdown.
15:18Last but not least, I'm sure you guys, everybody has seen this play. I just want to highlight
15:24what he brings. It's a skill set that the Giants offense needs. The Giants offensive, I mean the Giants
15:33receiver room needs. And that is the ability to make tough catches. Not put the football on the ground
15:41when you have bodies around you. When you have 50-50 balls and contested catches. This kid has a 2
15:49.7,
15:49it had a 2.7 drop rate, which is, will step in and be one of the, have one of,
15:56have the,
15:56some of the best hands in that Giants receiving room day one. It's a receiver room that's been plagued
16:03by drops over the years, especially when it comes to 50-50 catches. But look at this, look at the
16:08way
16:08this man attacks that football, goes and brings that down. You telling me Jackson Dart's not going to
16:13want to throw to a guy that he can just throw the football up and out there for. And in
16:21double
16:22coverage, he lays his body out like this and wows the crowd. MetLife Stadium is going to go nuts when
16:28they see a catch like this. Yeah, I'm, yeah, yeah, I'm feeling it too. Yeah, you're a little boy.
16:34What you want to do, little boy? That's on both of y'all. Look at that. Attack the football. Look
16:42at,
16:42look how athletic he is, man. You don't see like six, four dudes. They, oh, basketball players jump
16:49like this. This is very, this is, this is an athletic catch. Grab and play. Very T Higgins like. Very
16:59Plaxico Burris, Amani Toomer, Brandon London-ish. Sorry, I had to throw my name in there.
17:06Oh, again, it survives the fall. It's one thing, bro, you're getting, there's contact
17:14at the point of catch. A lot of receivers, your concentration now breaks when that contact
17:21comes. And you'll see this ball go through 90% of the receivers in the league. This is going through
17:27their hands, especially because, hey, this is a good play by the corner to get in there and try
17:32and make a play on the football. But not when, not when, not when this guy's Madden Raiden is better
17:39than this guy's. So Joe Shane said that Nalakai Fields was a player that they coveted coming into
17:48the draft. And that translation to me is we didn't trade up into the third round for a guy that
17:54we
17:54liked. We traded for a guy that we targeted and knew can play right away. This is a guy who
18:00spent 90%
18:01of his career college snaps on the perimeter, but I expect him to compete for that starting Z job
18:07right away. And don't be surprised if Matt Nagy creates some sort of big slot type package where
18:14he has both Fields and tight end Isaiah Likely in the slots. Eli Manning with Plaxico Burris and Amani
18:22Tumor ate for years because Eli had two big frame receivers with the size who could actually move
18:28and run routes. Size without athleticism is just a tall guy out there running around. And Malachi Fields
18:35has shown, and you saw the tape, that he can not only win by using his strength and his frame,
18:41but he can also tempo his routes and get in and out of breaks. This isn't a developmental project.
18:48They drafted a guy that doesn't drop the football, that can win in traffic, gets physical, and he now
18:54gives the Giants a real threat in the red zone.
