Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani says he is open to Cabinet ministers using electric vehicles (EVs) as part of government cost-cutting measures amid the ongoing global oil situation, but stressed that any move must be supported by adequate nationwide infrastructure.

He made the remarks during a Concorde Club dialogue session on Tuesday (April 28), when asked whether the government and Cabinet were prepared to adopt austerity measures, including the use of EVs as official vehicles.

00:01Given the situation in the Iran and Middle East, is the government prepared to lead the charge to opt for
00:11renewable energy and opt for taking easy, especially for cabinet minister?
00:17Yeah, I'm okay. But as I explained to you earlier that, you know, we need the public infrastructure. In particular,
00:27where are you getting the public charger available throughout the country? Just like how you have the petrol station throughout
00:35the country. Right? That people have no worry at all to basically have this EV.
00:41Now, if you have second car, third car, fourth car, then that is a different story. Right? But I'm talking
00:47about people who rely on one car and opt for EV. But if you don't provide that and you give
00:54them a cheap price but you don't provide that infrastructure, they may know, they may construct that actually this is
01:00all already taken care of by the government.
01:01But when they have a problem later on, they will come back to the government and say, why government allow
01:07this? So my stand on this, actually, let's build the infrastructure together.
01:11Those people want to use EV, we are welcome. Those car manufacturers that want to produce EV, they will welcome.
01:19Even they will produce overseas but they have to subject to CBU taxes that we have in CBU car.
01:27They will be same for all the countries in the world. Right? But last four years, we have given a
01:34special exemption, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, that whoever bring the CBU car, as long as EV, there's zero tax.
01:43No import duty tax, no excise duty and no sales tax. That's how the government have given that window for
01:50four years.
01:50But unfortunately, within that four years, we have not seen the development of infrastructure. So widely available, especially in rural
01:59area, balik kampung and so on.
02:02Dr. Jee, given the last search of EV, is Niti looking to formally update the NAP?
02:11They already have that. We already have that. We don't change, except that when we change, we change.
02:22The EV car, we change it because we don't charge anyone for them to bring the CBU car.
02:28But after that four years, we have to come back because we have let go almost 3.3, we have
02:34forgotten 3.3 billion tax that since we opened that 2022, 3, 4, and 5, 25, the date, the last
02:43date is 31st December, 2025.
02:45The rest of it, if you want to continue your CBU, there will be a tax for import tax and
02:51excise duty and sales tax.
