00:00Probably the biggest surprise on draft day was Ty Simpson going to the Los Angeles Rams at pick 13.
00:08I will say, I did see this mocked in one popular spot.
00:14I'll call it, it was Todd McShay of now The Ringer.
00:18And the breakdown of the prediction with, I'm not saying this is going to happen,
00:24which really bothered me because it's legitimately a predictive mock draft.
00:29And in my opinion, no victory lapping should be allowed when you lead off the analysis with,
00:35I'm not saying this is going to happen.
00:36It did happen.
00:39And what followed was a lot of scrambling.
00:48I, listen, I'm not in the position, right, for, you know, media feuds.
00:57I'm not calling anybody out thinking that anything is going to come from it.
01:02But these are all stories that I think you are all familiar with.
01:08Dan Orlovsky of ESPN gets in this big thing with the McAfee show over his analysis of Ty Simpson.
01:16Then Ty Simpson goes 13th.
01:19He's celebrating like it's his son who just got drafted.
01:25And pretty much the only people now that are defending what the Rams did are Orlovsky and Les Snead.
01:35And that's kind of where we are in this process.
01:38Because the Rams made a mistake.
01:41And I, unless you're in the Rams building, right, or Ty Simpson's most public supporter,
01:51it's kind of hard to argue the other direction.
01:54First of all, the report that came out from Albert Breer following the Simpson selection
02:02is one of the most eye-opening reports I've ever seen.
02:06That as Ty Simpson was attempting to figure out, should I go into the draft or not?
02:13His father, his father spoke with Les Snead.
02:20And Les Snead said, leave.
02:22So that is a personal relationship GM selection.
02:29McVay throws his fit at the press conference on Thursday.
02:34Says, I'm just doing it to be respectful to Stafford.
02:38That's Looney Tunes.
02:40Just don't draft him then.
02:42And pretty much everybody's attempt to say, oh, this is a really good pick is, well, McVay will figure it
02:50out.
02:50If that's our plan, if our plan, okay, is McVay will figure it out, then I do not need to
03:02spend a pick this high on a quarterback.
03:07I can just take Garrett Nussmeyer in the sixth round and go, McVay will figure it out.
03:16Or take Talon Green in the third round and go, McVay will figure it out.
03:22The Super Bowl favorites had the 13th pick and passed on bringing in a player who can help them win
03:32the Super Bowl this season.
03:33It's a mistake, Tom, and everybody's been doing damage control for a week.
03:40It's beyond a disaster.
03:42There's no other way to describe it.
03:44And what you said is the only people that want to defend it are either someone who was planting their
03:49flag saying that Ty Simpson is great,
03:51which he may very well end up being a good quarterback.
03:54That's fine.
03:55Or people within the Rams building.
03:56And to your point, using that draft capital to draft a player who is not going to help you this
04:04year outside of some extreme circumstance is a mistake, a disaster to the highest degree.
04:11When there are skill position players you could take, given the fact that we've seen Devonta Adams trade rumors in
04:17the offseason,
04:18we have Pukinokua potential legal issues, that there are wide receivers on the board to help Matt Stafford and or
04:25other offensive linemen to help protect an aging Matt Stafford
04:29who had more than we can count back injury news coming into last training camp.
04:36Now listen, Stafford was great last year, but his clock is running out.
04:39And you need to surround him with protecting him and skill players.
04:42And that's what the Rams need most.
04:44The defense, I think, is good enough, right?
04:46They could have always drafted another edge player, another quarterback, whatever it might be.
04:50But drafting a quarterback at 13th is one of the biggest mistakes that we've seen.
04:54And suspecting that McVay is some type of quarterback whisperer and that he will anchor things for the rest of
05:00the franchise and figure out every quarterback is wrong.
