00:39What's the cross street?
00:40Are you see a address?
00:43Okay, and we have units in route to the location now.
00:47He don't have no car trouble.
00:48I think he's gone.
00:51He's gone.
00:54Come on, baby.
00:55Okay, the police is here.
01:03That's what I want to address.
01:05We're going to be down there.
01:06We're going to be around.
01:08Fine.
01:09So long?
01:10Three.
01:11I'm not close anymore.
01:13You better hold me for the Lord's birthday.
01:15Hey, it's the M1.
01:17I'm going to win.
01:18All right, we got EMS.
01:19EMS is here.
01:20Step back, honey.
01:21Step back.
01:21Come on, man.
01:24I don't think we're freezing.
01:27You need to be safe.
01:28No, we coming.
01:29It looks like he's been a friend, though.
01:31Let's go to the shuttle.
01:33Let's go in the shuttle.
01:33Let's go in the shuttle.
01:35Let's go in the shuttle.
01:36I'll be on the shuttle.
01:51you have a male declared deceased it's in the 3100 block of st. rock apparently it's an area
02:00where there's a club nearby it sounds like no one's left on scene that was there let's go see what
02:10we got
02:17when i arrived on scene homicide sections that are working overnight had already made the scene
02:22sergeant constantine arthur hill and maurice stewart
02:28scenes completely calmed down from when it happened
02:32the body's in the neutral ground in the grassy area between the sides of the street
02:37quite a distance from any of the buildings on either the northbound or southbound side of the street
02:45so we had what five wounds two in the back two in the back it looks like
02:51it looks like none of them were through and throughs there's no exit there's no blood on the ground
02:57the girls that i talked to work are gone they already said who he was we have brandon hayward
03:03hayward the person deceased was brandon hayward brandon is from new wallace he's in his early 30s
03:16that is the name of someone who says they may have some information but didn't want to talk to us
03:22out
03:22here i learned that there was a witness who was there at the time of the incident she is no
03:29longer on
03:29scene so i'm not gonna be able to talk to her now but the fact that this person gave information
03:34to an
03:34officer to pass to me so that i can contact her later is a good sign i spoke with someone
03:40else who
03:41knew the victim she said she drove out here with the victim what she said was they arrived at the
03:47club
03:48she backed in like just past the tape they backed in on the neutral ground he told her for some
03:53reason
03:54to go ahead and walk in before me and i asked her why did he tell her that she said
03:59she don't know
04:00so um she left him sitting in the passenger seat of the car she goes around to the club goes
04:06inside
04:07gets a drink he's still outside and then all of a sudden she came out and she saw them fanning
04:13him
04:14it looks like he got out of the car and was back here for some reason i asked her if
04:19he was
04:19beefing with someone she said no of course um so i mean that's pretty much all we have i do
04:27have a
04:27phone number and address and everything for the girl maurice told me that he had spoke to somebody
04:33else that supposedly arrived with a victim in a dark blue toyota camry but she was inside the
04:40bar when the shooting happened so there's two witnesses that i'll have to speak to later
04:51all right ladies do you know this guy what's his name i don't know his real name that's okay
05:02that's where everyone was right before they came here okay the witnesses told me that they were at
05:12another bar with the victim right before they came over here and they gave me that address
05:17it's very important that we do some follow-up with that address thank you all right
05:26i'm hoping to get some video from the club it looked like some decent cameras on the outside of
05:31that i just write warrants and ripped out rip everything we'll come back tomorrow no dates no
05:39no nothing on the cases there were no shell casings near the body clearly he fell not where he was
05:48shot
05:49he probably ran a little bit finding casings are important because we can track what gun fired what
05:58casings if you get casings ultimately later you can find a murder weapon and you can positively match
06:05the murder weapon to the scene so i called the canine officers asking to come down got the ballistics
06:13dog out they started sweeping the area so he alerted over here you can give me some interest in this
06:31area
06:33you find a couple you know lunches on me right come on man
06:48ultimately we found no casings you think it's a revolver it could be a revolver because they're not
06:53throwing through i was thinking rifle because there were small holes there was one that was throwing
06:56through like the shoulder i think that was true because they were they were close though
07:01the shooter probably was using a revolver which wouldn't eject any shell casings
07:07generally revolvers fire projectiles that are lead so they're softer they're more likely to
07:13deform on impact so they generally stay inside the body no phone out here fine
07:21anything else of note is bogus
07:26so is that a receipt yeah get a picture of that yeah that'll be important in the victim's pocket in
07:36the corner found a receipt from a seafood restaurant in the east from that same day
07:44i'll take a look at it so he may be with somebody it could stem from a fight he had
07:49at the seafood
07:50restaurant you never know so we're gonna go there tomorrow and get that video footage see if he's with
07:56anybody right now i don't have a lot to go on i also need to contact the two witnesses that
08:03were out here
08:04and i'm hoping that some of the businesses in that area caught the incident on camera so i think like
08:10nine o'clock tomorrow morning i'm just gonna start hit the ground running so we'll see thanks for coming
08:44out
08:47Hello.
08:48Hello, I'm looking for Ms. Charlotte Hayward.
08:50This is Detective Harmwood, New Orleans Police Department.
08:52Yes.
08:54I would like to sit down with you face to face at some point,
08:57just so you can see me and we can talk about whatever
08:59you need to talk about, if there's any news I can give you.
09:02OK.
09:04It's important to reach out to the family members of the victim
09:07and let them know that you're on the case
09:10and that you're there for them, but also give them
09:14enough space to grieve.
09:16She told me that he has a twin brother.
09:19They've been involved in making music
09:22since they were very young.
09:24Brandon has children.
09:25He has a lot of family members, and I can't begin to imagine
09:29the depths of their despair.
09:31He's going to be missed.
09:34This is my cell phone just for families and witnesses.
09:37At your convenience, when you feel up to it,
09:40you call me back on this number and I will come over and talk to you.
09:43OK?
09:45OK.
09:45All right.
09:46Thank you, ma'am.
09:48Thank you, ma'am.
10:02Thank you, ma'am.
10:13I don't want you to have to do anything by yourself.
10:16That's why I love you.
10:22Tell me the gist of what happened.
10:25Apparently, there was a party.
10:26Apparently, there was a party.
10:27So there's a bunch of people parked in the neutral ground.
10:30There was some commotion, shots fired.
10:33The DJ makes the announcement, everybody go home, the party's over.
10:36So then everybody scatters.
10:38He's on the ground.
10:40He's got no phone.
10:42Oh, wow.
10:45I see camera.
10:48I see they work.
10:57Hello.
10:58I'm Detective Marshall.
11:00This is Detective Herman.
11:02New Orleans Police, Palmaside.
11:03We was wondering if your cameras were working.
11:06We were trying to see if a vehicle and a person came to this location on yesterday.
11:10About 3 o'clock yesterday, I spoke to somebody who said that, yes, they have video footage on the times
11:18I needed.
11:22That's been right up.
11:24Yeah.
11:25My victim, Brandon Hayward, does arrive.
11:29He's in a dark-colored Toyota Camry that matched a description of the car that he arrived to the party
11:34in.
11:36He goes inside.
11:38He orders his boiled potatoes.
11:40They give it to him.
11:43Gets back in the car and he leaves, which appears to be the car and that the witness brought him
11:48to this party in moments before he was killed.
11:52Thank you very much for your help, sir.
11:57My victim, he's driving a dark-colored Toyota Camry.
12:02It's probably the witness's vehicle that he arrived to the party in.
12:05So I need to speak to this witness and find that car.
12:10Yeah.
12:12Finding the vehicle is important because you never know what kind of evidence can be in that car.
12:18His cell phone, sometimes vehicles, navigation systems will show where he was earlier that day.
12:24We're gonna find out what happened.
12:26We're gonna get justice for Brandon.
12:28As quick as we can.
13:04Once you're ready to go,
13:05we're just going to follow you up.
13:06You go when you're ready, all right?
13:07All right.
13:10Through an intelligence source,
13:12I found out this car was parked
13:14behind this building over here.
13:16There's a bullet hole in it.
13:19And it's the same car that I have the victim in on video
13:23at a seafood place earlier in the day before he was killed.
13:29We ran the plate, and the car is registered
13:32to the witness that Detective Stewart spoke to at the crime
13:35scene who had said that she had arrived at the club
13:39with the victim.
13:40What she said was they arrived at the club.
13:43He told her for some reason to go ahead and walk in before me.
13:47And I asked her, why did he tell her that?
13:49She said she don't know.
13:51I am going to call her as soon as this car is put into the cage.
13:55I need her to come to headquarters and explain to me
13:57what happened that night from her perspective.
14:01And then I can ask her where her car is,
14:03see what she has to say about that.
14:05And then I can search it and hopefully
14:07get the projectile out of it.
14:10Hopefully, it's not too badly tore up.
14:12Maybe if I find a murder weapon at some point
14:14in the future, match it up.
14:37Hello?
14:38This is Detective Herman Moranlis, police department.
14:40Is this ?
14:41Yes.
14:42Hey, I would like to sit down with you face to face at some point.
14:46You think you want to come down to the building and talk to me
14:49so I can get your statement from that for the night?
14:52I'll send you a text with the address.
14:56When you get out front and you park, you give me a call back
14:59and I'll come down and let you in the building.
15:02How long do you think? You'd be able to come over now?
15:05All right. Thank you.
15:10The witness is coming in, but she's very hesitant.
15:13We're hoping she actually shows up and lets us know what she saw
15:16and any other information that might be valuable to the investigation.
15:35So, Friday, you were at that bar?
15:39Yes.
15:40You were driving when you went there?
15:41I was driving.
15:43It was sitting in the passenger seat.
15:44Okay.
15:45And so when we pulled up, I stepped out the car.
15:47I'm like, you ready? You coming?
15:48He said, go ahead. I'm coming.
15:49I went across the street.
15:51I walked in.
15:52I seen the people I knew.
15:54We spoke.
15:55And I went to the bar and got a drink.
15:58And then the girl who the party was for,
16:01she got on the mic and announced,
16:02everybody get to y'all call safely.
16:05Nothing about nothing was going on outside.
16:08As I walked to my car, the driver's door was open.
16:11And I'm like, he's not in the car.
16:12So I see a crowd of people surrounding somebody.
16:16So I go over there and I see him.
16:17I'm like, you know what happened?
16:19Nobody ever said he got shot or nothing.
16:21So I went back to the car to try to unlock his phone
16:24and call his mother, but I couldn't get the phone.
16:25Where is that phone now?
16:27I don't know if it was in my car
16:28or I dropped it somewhere right there.
16:31So you don't know anything about what happened?
16:32What have you heard rumor-wise as what happened?
16:35I only heard what his mama was telling me,
16:38like, he probably got into an altercation with somebody.
16:41How did you leave?
16:43I left when he was there, like, when the police pulled up.
16:46They kept saying, well, he out here by himself.
16:47And I'm like, he out here with me.
16:49And I couldn't get in touch with nobody.
16:51So I drove off and I went to the mama house.
16:53And I knocked on her door.
16:54It took me, like, 10 minutes to even get them up.
16:57The witness, she's very forthcoming.
17:00She tells me things that I already knew to be true,
17:02which is good because then I know she wants to help.
17:05The next step is to ask her about the vehicle.
17:07She doesn't know we've already found it.
17:09So her answers will be very telling
17:12to determine if she's being honest
17:14in this interview or not.
17:16Where's your car now?
17:19It spoke, uh...
17:22down with me because that's where I met everybody
17:24after I left his mama house.
17:26And my husband came around there with me.
17:28Like, they follow me back now.
17:30And my family and stuff had came over there with me
17:33and sit down and talk.
17:37But then I do have a bullet hole
17:39in my car.
17:39Don't go pick it up today.
17:40I have it.
17:41So all I need for me really is the keys
17:43so that I don't have to break into it.
17:45I'm going to search it, see if his phone is in there.
17:47I'm going to see if I can find the bullet itself
17:50in your car.
17:51Okay.
17:53If you hear anything,
17:56please just pass along any information to me.
18:01The witness was truthful about the car,
18:03so it leads me to believe that everything else
18:05about her statements were true.
18:08Unfortunately, the witness was inside the club
18:10when the shooting happened,
18:12and she was not able to add any additional information.
18:15So I'm hoping that the car will have some evidence
18:17that can point us in the right direction
18:18to find out who killed Brandon Hayward.
18:23find the way out who killed Brandon Hayward.
18:55The bullet and the victim's phone might be in there.
19:01Brendan Hayward supposedly arrived in his car the night he was killed.
19:05I have video of him in that car, and there's a bullet hole in the car.
19:10The big thing is to see if I can recover the projectile, match it to the projectiles they
19:15pulled out of his body.
19:18Did it come through?
19:20I don't see where it came from.
19:28OK.
19:31I don't see.
19:35There it is.
19:37All the way down behind that speaker, it looks like.
19:41We're winning.
19:42We're gonna win a chicken dinner.
19:46Crime Lab was able to recover the bullet that we had.
19:48It went through the door.
19:50That'll go to ballistics, and we'll see if it matches the other projectiles we found in
19:56the decedent.
19:57Now we need to find the decedent's cell phone.
20:04One right there.
20:07Look at you.
20:08Yes.
20:11One on a second.
20:13Another phone?
20:17Oh.
20:18Bingo bango.
20:21There's phones everywhere.
20:25Oh.
20:27That one's destroyed.
20:28That's definitely not his working phone.
20:31I'll take all of them.
20:34We found five cell phones in the car.
20:37We'll work on trying to get digital forensics to get into them.
20:40I'm hoping one of them is Brandon.
20:44Because right now, the evidence is thin.
21:06A second witness on scene gave her name and phone number subtly to one of the officers
21:12who got it to me.
21:14That is the name of someone who says they may have some information but didn't want to
21:19talk to us out here.
21:21She claims to have been standing there, knows what happened, why the shooting happened,
21:27possibly saw the perpetrator.
21:29So, we're on our way to the 5th District Police Station where we're going to see what she
21:33knows.
21:35So, fingers crossed that this all works out.
21:38We need some good luck here.
21:53Yes.
21:57So, from what I understand, I just want to make it clear that you're a witness to what
22:02happened, right?
22:03Yes.
22:03I want to start from where I was having a party.
22:09So, she invited Eric to the party.
22:11I went and picked Eric up.
22:13Eric.
22:14Eric is the dude who shot Twin.
22:17Okay.
22:19I went in there to the party.
22:21I didn't really say nothing to nobody and I went back out.
22:25Eric in the car.
22:26So, I didn't know Twin pulled up behind my car.
22:29Three friends, so he hurried up and jumped out the car and he gave me a hug.
22:33Because I ain't seen him in a long time, right?
22:35Okay.
22:35And I was happy to see him though.
22:37But I didn't know that was going to be my last day to see him.
22:41Eric was trying to figure out who I was talking to.
22:43So, he got off the car and he spoke to Twin.
22:45Okay.
22:46When Twin saw him get off the car, Twin had like an attitude on his face and his whole
22:50demeanor changed.
22:52So, Eric said, what's up?
22:55And Twin, after he finished talking to me, he spoke to him.
22:57He was like, what's up?
22:58He gave him a hug.
22:59So, they must know each other.
23:00And then he went back talking to me.
23:03So, Eric got in the car.
23:04I thought he was standing in the car.
23:06Wow.
23:07So, me and Twin was still talking, Eric got out the car.
23:10And then they passed some words.
23:13Some words?
23:14Like, uh, why you still talking to her?
23:17It's time to, yeah.
23:18All your words.
23:19Yeah.
23:20Eric said that I took too long to end the conversation with me and Twin.
23:25They started to, like, you know, raise up to each other.
23:28So, I'm trying to jump in the middle of the thing.
23:31But Twin pushed me and that's when Eric got mad.
23:34Because Twin pushed me because I'm trying to break them up.
23:36So, they started tussling first and Eric went back to the car and got whatever was in
23:41his bag or whatever.
23:43And then what he did.
23:44So, he started shooting?
23:46Yes.
23:47When he shot him, he ran.
23:48And he still was shooting at him.
23:51Did you see the kind of gun it was?
23:53No, I didn't see the gun.
23:54I didn't see the gun.
23:56Okay.
23:57After he shot him, he was like, uh, get in the car.
23:59I said, I'm not bringing you nowhere.
24:01So, he ran off.
24:03Do you know Eric's last name?
24:05Garrison.
24:07How old were you?
24:0832, I think.
24:10Do you remember what Eric was wearing?
24:12Eric had on some jean pants and he had a white shirt.
24:17And the homeless is dead in the tent.
24:21How did he get in contact?
24:22He called me private.
24:23Like, see if you go to my phone.
24:25He called me private.
24:27That's him calling?
24:28Mm-hmm.
24:29Oh.
24:30This particular witness knew everything.
24:33She was able to identify the alleged perpetrator as Eric Garrison.
24:39Everything she described was correct.
24:42Based on what we had on the scene.
24:44The way she spoke about him.
24:46And her mannerisms.
24:48And her demeanor overall.
24:50There's no reason to disbelieve anything she says.
24:53Give me a couple minutes.
24:54I need to find a picture of him.
24:56Mm-hmm.
24:56And I want to make sure we're talking about the same.
24:58Oh, that's fine.
24:59Does that make sense?
25:00Mm-hmm.
25:01You don't believe in the system, don't you?
25:03Okay.
25:05No problem.
25:10Hey, I need a confirmation photo.
25:13Eric Garrison, about 32 years old.
25:33You see the hairstyle?
25:34How old is that photo?
25:36One of the detectives in the 5th District was able to run the name for me.
25:39Find someone reasonably the right age with that name.
25:42Able to get a driver's license photo.
25:45He got a criminal history?
25:47Yeah.
25:48In this particular instance, there's no reason to do a six pack lineup.
25:52She said she knew this person for a while.
25:55So we showed her a single driver's license photo.
25:58Yeah.
25:58Um, I'm going to hang you the folder, you look at it, and you tell me if this is the
26:03person
26:03you know who shot Twin.
26:05Mm-hmm.
26:06All right?
26:06Can we look at that?
26:09Mm-hmm.
26:13Yeah, this shot.
26:15That's him.
26:15That's the person who shot Twin.
26:17Okay.
26:33My witness, she identified the shooter.
26:35She said his name is Eric Garrison.
26:39I don't know where he is.
26:41She said he was homeless.
26:43She said that he's called a couple of times from a number that says, you know, private
26:47caller.
26:48So he's blocking his own phone number.
26:50I gave his name to the FBI task force.
26:54So they can maybe put eyes on him.
26:56And if they're able to put eyes on him, as soon as I have a judge's signature on the
27:00warrant, they'll be able to just scoop him up.
27:01Okay.
27:16Hey, this is Detective Herman.
27:18Hi, Detective.
27:19Hey, Mr. .
27:21Hey.
27:22This is me at the house and all that stuff.
27:26Is he communicating with you via text message?
27:32He keeps telling you to meet.
27:33He keeps telling you to meet.
27:38Okay.
27:39You're going to get a call from one of our social workers.
27:42They're going to have some information for you.
27:44And if you want to get out of town, they can help you do that.
27:48Okay.
27:48And I'll be in contact with you again.
27:50Okay.
27:51All right.
27:52Bye.
27:55It's important to get this perpetrator off the street as soon as we can, because that's
28:00a real threat to our safety.
28:02Especially if he thinks the witness ID'd him as the shooter.
28:06Right now, I need to see if I can find any video of actually the incident occurring
28:11or of the perpetrator fleeing to help strengthen the case.
28:18Yes, ma'am.
28:19This is Detective Herman Knowles, Police Department.
28:22Yes.
28:22You know, there was an incident in the block of St. Rock on early...
28:30Yeah.
28:31I authored a search warrant this morning for video surveillance.
28:34Do you have video surveillance equipment at the building?
28:37Yes.
28:38Okay.
28:38What's the website that you use?
28:42If you want to just tell me the name and password, and I'll see if I can get it done.
28:49Okay.
28:50I'll see if I can get that done, and I'll either tell you that I got it already or that
28:54I'm
28:54coming to meet you.
28:55Okay.
28:56Thank you so much.
28:57All right.
28:58Bye.
29:03I'm going to try to see if I can log into this website and see the camera footage.
29:08That's cool they gave you remote access.
29:11Yeah.
29:12I just want video of the incident.
29:15It would be great if we had the whole thing captured on camera.
29:19I got my fingers crossed.
29:25All right.
29:28I know roughly about what time the call came in, so I know exactly at what time to look.
29:33And I was at the scene, so I know exactly where the body was found.
29:37So I know exactly where to look.
29:40There's glare.
29:41Son of a bitch.
29:44It's going to happen right here where I can't see.
29:51Literally, it's on camera, but there's a glare from the light outside, so I'm not going
29:55to be able to see it happen.
29:57That would have been too easy, bro.
30:00Oh, come on.
30:06It doesn't appear I'm going to get anything extra.
30:09That's disappointing.
30:11Missy?
30:13Check this out.
30:15But this is after it happened and they're starting to clear out.
30:18She turns the lights off.
30:19Wait, watch this.
30:21This is what it looks like at the time it happens.
30:23Yeah, that glare.
30:23Yeah.
30:24Right after it happens, they're shutting the place down and everybody's leaving.
30:30And then she clicks the lights off and look, you can see.
30:35Of course.
30:37It's clear as day when she turns the lights off.
30:40You think that we're going to make it easy for you?
30:43Yeah.
30:47There you go.
30:52No .
30:55That's my shooter running away.
30:59There's some video from another angle that shows right after the shooting.
31:05It's a person running, wearing what the witness said.
31:08The shooter was wearing a white shirt.
31:11But it's not clear enough to identify this person.
31:16You can't see nothing but a blur running.
31:18No.
31:21No.
31:24No.
31:26No.
31:34Okay.
31:35I need your advice.
31:37What's happening?
31:38There's a bar.
31:40Some girl's having her birthday party out there.
31:42And my victim, he's in the car.
31:45The victim sees the witness.
31:48He gave her a hug.
31:49They talk.
31:50It seems like a shooter, there might be some jealousy there.
31:54And he got out the car and got mad about it.
31:56Okay.
31:56They exchanged words.
31:57Shooter goes back to his car, grabs a gun, comes back out, and just shoots him.
32:02All right.
32:03So there's some escalation there.
32:04Yeah.
32:05Detective Fife is one of the best detectives that I've had the experience of working with.
32:11I regularly go to him to make sure that I'm not getting tunnel vision in my pursuit of a suspect,
32:16to make sure I'm seeing all the angles as clearly as possible.
32:20So I speak to him, making sure that I have enough probable cause now to write an arrest warrant for
32:25Eric Harrison.
32:26So just a good witness statement?
32:30Yeah.
32:30She explained exactly how it went down.
32:34Okay.
32:34So she's got details of the scene, right?
32:36Details of the scene.
32:37She did the confirmation photo.
32:39No problem.
32:40And then he started calling the witness, apparently, a bunch of times.
32:45So that's sort of where I'm at.
32:47Do you have video?
32:48I got surveillance footage.
32:50There's a guy in all white running past the camera, which is the direction she said he ran.
32:55Okay.
32:56And it's the timings, right?
32:57But the strength of the case is going to be defending her statement.
33:01Yeah.
33:02And so any little thing might help.
33:04Yeah.
33:05I think you're good for a arrest warrant, dude.
33:08If he's out and about, that's more time to convince her to change her story.
33:14I think you know what you got to do.
33:16Yeah.
33:17I'd write an arrest warrant.
33:17It's good to talk it out, though.
33:19I have probable cause, so I'm able to write an arrest warrant for Eric Garrison for murder.
33:53I got a call this morning.
33:56Apparently, last night, Eric Garrison started calling the witness a bunch of times.
34:03So the officers went out.
34:05How many times have you called?
34:06He's been calling me all day.
34:08And what exactly did he say?
34:10He said, tell your mom and them, I'm about to come kill all y'all.
34:13Tell your brothers to be outside with his guns ready, cause I'm coming to kill all y'all.
34:18He actually calls her again while the officer's standing there.
34:22He's trying to make it seem like it was my fault.
34:25I didn't make you put no trigger.
34:26You need to call him yourself.
34:28Here you go.
34:28You want to answer?
34:30Put it on speaker.
34:33Hello.
34:34I don't know what time of day it is.
34:37I don't know what time of day it is.
34:39All it was fake.
34:41All I was waiting on.
34:44What you waiting on?
34:45Oh, nothing.
34:47Oh, nothing, my love.
34:50You ain't around watching.
34:54Oh, nothing, my love.
34:58So this morning, I put together a bolo to get his face on the news, which we hadn't done earlier.
35:05Sometimes it's easier for us to find him if he doesn't know he's wanted.
35:09He might be doing his regular stuff.
35:12The vital offender warrant squad task force with the U.S. Marshals, they're all actively out there now trying to
35:19find this guy before he actually makes good on any of those threats.
35:28All right, good.
35:32Where was he?
35:33Where did you find him?
35:35In Dallas?
35:37Did he have anything on him, a gun, a phone, anything?
35:42Do me a favor.
35:43Send me a picture of what he looks like now in custody.
35:47Okay.
35:48Okay.
35:48Thank you very much.
35:49All right.
35:50Bye.
35:50Bye.
35:53Bye.
35:54The U.S. Marshals did their job.
35:56They coordinated, actually, with Dallas, Texas.
36:00They were able to get GPS locations for his phone at a Greyhound station.
36:06They took him into custody in Dallas, Texas just now.
36:09And that's him in the back of a police car.
36:14No gun, though.
36:15When he's finally extradited here, I'll try to talk to him.
36:20So I'm going to call the mom and let her know that he's in handcuffs.
36:26Hello.
36:27Hey, Ms. Charlotte.
36:29Yeah.
36:30I'm just giving you a call back so I can give you a proper update.
36:33So the gentleman was arrested this morning in Dallas, Texas at a Greyhound station.
36:40Okay.
36:41And that's sort of where we stand.
36:43Do you have anything that you could think of that you wanted to ask me?
36:46No.
36:47Not right now.
36:48All right.
36:48I can't think of it right now.
36:49Okay.
36:49Well, anything you need.
36:51This is my number.
36:51You reach out to me.
36:52If any family members, if anyone wants to ask me any questions about the case, you just
36:56give them my number.
36:57Okay.
36:58All right.
37:00No problem.
37:00Bye.
37:03This is the witness.
37:05I'll call her next.
37:07Hello.
37:08Hey, .
37:09That's Detective Herman.
37:11How you doing?
37:12So he's in custody.
37:14He was arrested out of state.
37:16He's calling you from jail?
37:20Yeah.
37:22At the beginning of the phone call, it'll say, you know, this is a call from an inmate and
37:25everything's recorded.
37:26There should be an option if you listen to the whole thing to prevent that inmate from
37:32calling you if that's something you want to do.
37:34Okay.
37:35He'll be sent back to New Orleans in the next week or two.
37:37And then we'll start the process of the criminal case against him here.
37:41Okay.
37:42Bye.
37:42Bye.
37:45Clearing the case and getting an arrest warrant is a relief.
37:48You get to give somebody the start of their closure.
37:51Like this is the person that's wanted for killing your loved one.
37:55But that's the beginning of the work because now we have to take it to court.
38:00So I still have a lot of work ahead of me.
38:37Hey.
38:38What's happening?
38:40The firearms report came back.
38:42The bullets, they recovered from inside my decedent on autopsy and the bullet we pulled
38:46out of that car were fired from the same gun.
38:50It's a .38 caliber class ammunition, which includes .38 Special .357 Magnum and 9mm.
38:57They won't be able to tell you exactly what type of gun it was fired from, but the type
39:02of projectiles recovered from the body of the decedent are consistent with a revolver.
39:07And then the suspect called the witness from jail.
39:1221 phone calls he makes the day he's arrested all to her.
39:16That's your witness again?
39:17This is my witness from jail.
39:19He's talking to her about how much he loves her and that if you love me, you wouldn't want
39:23to see me in jail.
39:24It's kind of frantic.
39:25Yeah.
39:26Listen to this.
39:37I mean, that's usable, right?
39:39Yeah.
39:40It's showing that he's trying to manipulate her.
39:42At one point, he says, I love you so much.
39:45You love me too?
39:45Yeah.
39:46Well, then we should get married because if you marry me, then they can't make you say
39:49anything bad about me.
39:50Mmm.
39:50How romantic.
39:52If they got married, that's not like a workaround for-
39:54No.
39:55People watch too much TV.
39:56Legal knowledge comes from law and order.
39:58He's in custody, so we'll see how it goes in court.
40:12My name is Charlotte Marie Hayward.
40:14I am Brandon's mother.
40:18All of my kids had their own special gifts.
40:24But Brandon drew logos.
40:26He did tattoo drawings.
40:29He had his first art show.
40:31He was about five.
40:34That's my twin.
40:35That's my better half, my heart.
40:38We split seeds, so.
40:40Mm-hmm.
40:41Being a twin is like having a better half that pushes you.
40:44It helps you not make the bad decisions in life.
40:48Our angel.
40:49What's up, bud?
40:50Over there.
40:52That is nice.
40:54It would be him to be our guardian angel because he just can't take anyone else having to do
40:58that.
41:04One of the most important things for me as a parent was to allow them to feel safe and loved
41:10and to be themselves.
41:12They became musicians right off the bat.
41:15I want to say maybe fourth grade, third grade, they were already in Jazz Fest.
41:21Yeah.
41:22You know, it's a big honor to be a musician in Jazz Fest.
41:25Like, he plays the piano by ear.
41:27He plays the guitar.
41:28He plays every instrument that I can name.
41:30Like, a harmonica, everything.
41:32So it's just, it's crazy, man.
41:45The things that Brandon would do were always about togetherness, love, forgiveness, family, things like that.
41:56So wherever he went, he definitely made a mark.
42:00He made a difference.
42:06Brandon Hayward was killed for no reason.
42:10He had children.
42:12Now his family has to take care of his kids.
42:17His parents don't get to see him get married one day.
42:19He misses everything.
42:21And that's tragic.
42:26There was no reason for a shooting to happen.
42:29For whatever perceived slight Eric Garrison thought he incurred, it didn't need to end in violence.
42:36But case is resolved, and Mr. Garrison is in jail.
42:40By the time Eric Garrison was extradited back to New Orleans, he had a lawyer, and they weren't going to
42:45give me a statement.
42:46So I never spoke directly with the suspect, and he never found the weapon.
42:56Shall we stop doing his children?
42:57Let's go.
43:08By the time Eric Garrison is an incredible hero on Thornton.
43:09All right, we're here.
43:09We're here.
43:10We're here.
43:10We're here.
43:11We're here.
43:11You
