What happened?? 6-1? Boston Bruins are now down 3-1 in series. Who do you blame for the "pathetic display of hockey" yesterday?
Scheim: "That was disgusting" Was the loss more on Sturm or the players?
Transcript
00:00A pathetic display of hockey from your Boston Bruins.
00:05I think I was just, I was straight up duped.
00:08I was bamboozled.
00:09I was led astray, run amok.
00:12You name it.
00:12Cue the Stephen A. Smith because after game two, I thought, wow, this Bruins team can
00:17compete with the Buffalo Sabres.
00:19They can win this series.
00:20We were right.
00:21Like they are actually a better team than we thought.
00:23And then game three happened.
00:26Didn't go exactly as planned.
00:27And then you come out in game four on home ice, a place you've been fantastic all year
00:33and lay the biggest egg of your life.
00:36Like that was disgusting.
00:38It was such a horrendous display of hockey.
00:41There were bad turnovers.
00:43There was no like, other than a couple of hits from Zdorov and McAvoy, there was seemed to
00:49be no physicality, no nuts.
00:51Like they just kind of just showed up and were like, meh, matinee day game.
00:55I'm still tired.
00:56I have no interest in playing today.
00:58They weren't ready to play.
01:00And I'll ask you the same question that we've been asking about Alex Cora and the players
01:05on that team.
01:05Is that on Marco Sturm or is that on them?
01:08I don't know.
01:08I think it's on the players because this has happened a couple times this year.
01:11And then Sturm immediately will come out and kind of rip them for it.
01:15And whereas Cora never really ripped the players as much, but like this is, I just, I don't
01:22know what it is.
01:22This team has no sack like whatsoever.
01:25They just don't want to stand up to the Sabres and the Sabres are just kind of having their
01:30way with them now.
01:31And it's embarrassing.
01:32Well, I'd say this to you, Shyam.
01:33Don't be upset because you told me this before the season.
01:38I mean, before the playoffs that this team stinks and they weren't very good.
01:42I do owe you a sub and my boy Aria from Pizza Mia and Stoneham is going to bring you
01:46in
01:46a nice juicy steak tip sub.
01:48Oh, heck yeah.
01:49So don't be upset.
01:50We all expected this, right?
01:52Yeah, but we didn't expect them to get like pushed around like this week.
01:55I think that was the big thing, right?
01:56Because you would ask me what my expectations were.
01:58I'm like, if they're competitive in the first round, but they lose in seven games, that's
02:03fine.
02:03It was a good season.
02:04This isn't being competitive.
02:05What you saw yesterday was not competitive.
02:08And we didn't expect that at home, at least on home ice, you'd be getting mollywhopped.
02:16Six one.
02:17Like we did not expect that part of it.
02:20No, that was a shock.
02:21And it's not.
02:22The sad thing is that those goals are all, they're all giveaways.
02:27Yeah.
02:28It was like free puck day in the, in the, in the Bruins zone yesterday.
02:32Come get one.
02:33Like, so.
02:34Campus Lindholm just doesn't know how to clear a zone.
02:37Apparently.
02:37No.
02:38We talked about the McAvoy thing earlier.
02:41Same, same, uh, series of plays.
02:45Minton can't get the puck out of there.
02:47Like it's just over and over and over again yesterday.
02:51It was horrible.
02:52And I even feel like David Poslodok just disappears.
02:54Your best player just disappears for stretches of time.
02:57And I'm like, where did this guy go?
02:59Where is he?
02:59He's supposed to be the most talented guy on the ice.
03:02I keep thinking about, there was a couple that I saw in the stands.
03:05I don't know if you guys saw this.
03:07That had a sign that said, we just got married.
03:10How about a puck?
03:11And everybody was like, before the game, how cool is this?
03:14They went straight from their wedding to this.
03:16I'm like, oh, couple's counseling for those two.
03:19Bad, bad look.
03:20Bad look.
03:21All right.
03:22Chime, thank you.
03:23I asked you earlier if you fault him for the lack of juice or that's on these players.
03:29I mean, those first three goals, it's complete giveaways.
03:38A couple of them, like, set up breakouts, you know, by guys who should be able to do it.
03:47Charlie McAvoy, you know, Harris.
03:50Frazier Mitten on the board.
03:51He had Harris in there, you know, so maybe you can fault him a little bit when it comes to
03:57a couple changes that he made with guys.
04:02I just, I mean, you know, and Wiggy's argument is, has been this morning, that you didn't expect him to
04:09get through this round of the playoffs.
04:10So, he's doing what, he's doing that Bruins fan thing that you can't stand.
04:14He's stoking the fire is what he's doing.
04:16He's stoking the fire.
04:18I see what he's doing.
04:19I like Chime's lead.
04:20He was very, very tough on this because this was an embarrassing loss.
04:23And I guess it's like, you can't, I can understand you saying, I don't think they're going to be a
04:29team that gets to the second round.
04:31But you can't put on a performance like this.
04:34Like this, I think, I also wonder for Bruins fans, how do you take that when a coach has a
04:42product like that out on the ice and then says, I don't know why that happened.
04:47Like, in a way, you could say, okay, that's him signaling this is the player's effort.
04:52And so, he's saying it's not his responsibility.
04:54But like, if you're a fan, how do you hear that?
04:56Because that would piss me off.
04:58I would guess later today, he will blame roster construction.
05:01Yeah.
05:02But like, at the same time though, Greg, it's been the same relative core of guys for the last couple
05:07of years.
05:07And we've gone through, this is the third coach.
05:09And these things still happen.
05:10Well, can you say that, Chime, when Bergeron was gone and then he moved on from March and last year?
05:16Yeah, but even post-Bergeron, like, but it's been David Pasternak, Charlie McAvoy now for years, it feels like.
05:24And whether it was under Bruce Cassidy, who then went on to win a Stanley Cup, or whether it was
05:29under Jim Montgomery, who they had a great regular season and then fell apart like a piece of doo-doo
05:34in the playoffs.
05:34And now this, like, it's just gross.
05:36So are you saying that David Pasternak has not met the expectation that he should have during his time here?
05:44Absolutely.
05:45Like, he has underperformed, especially in the playoffs.
05:47And I think a lot of people have felt that way for a long time.
05:49And I, for one, have tried to make excuses for him because I know how talented he is.
05:54And yet, you watch, like, yesterday's game, and I'm like, there's just stretches of time where I'm just like, where
05:59is David?
05:59Did he disappear?
06:01Seeing the locker room taking a dump, like, where is he?
06:04Well, but that, and I'm with you on Meggo.
06:07I'm with you, Meggo, right?
06:09Is any other coach, you wouldn't allow them to say, I don't know what happened.
06:14What do you mean you don't know?
06:15Well, he's at a loss because, I mean, he's at a loss because it's a pivotal game on your ice.
06:21Right.
06:21You should know.
06:22And guys don't show up, so.
06:24Right, but you're literally 15 feet away from them standing on the bench, and you should know, like, here's what
06:31the hell happened.
06:31We had no juice, we're turning the puck over here, we're sloppy.
06:36Whatever it is that you saw on that ice that you felt like this is the reason that led to
06:41you being down so early the way you were down, you should have answers for that.
06:46And that should be something you're saying so the rest, so your team understands that this is unacceptable.
06:54And who do we think Jeremy Swayman was yelling at getting off the ice?
06:58Did Sturm talk about that?
07:00Was he asked?
07:01Did he say anything?
07:02Yeah, he said, he basically said at least one player was into it, or like, I'm paraphrasing.
07:08Oh, so he didn't call out the goalie?
07:11No, he did not.
07:12Oh, yeah.
07:13I mean, that was pushy.
07:14I don't know who it was.
07:15I would be pissed too, though.
07:17You know, because if you look at.
07:18Everybody can be pissed.
07:20You don't have to embarrass them.
07:21You can wait until you get to the locker.
07:22No, no, but I mean, maybe somebody said something.
07:25Who the hell knows?
07:26We talk about it all.
07:27Somebody said something to him?
07:28No, they were just sitting there.
07:29They were like.
07:30No, no, I mean, I don't.
07:31We talk about, like, guys blow up.
07:33That's the natural reaction.
07:34We've seen Brady chew.
07:37Who the hell's heady almost?
07:38Tyquan Thornton's head off.
07:40Like, that's the natural reaction of when your emotions are running high.
07:44You're frustrated.
07:45You know that you're about to be down 3-1 in the series, and you're probably, you know, you're going
07:50to lose.
07:50And you're thinking, like, well, I'm doing my job, fellas.
07:53Well, Brady chewed out Bill O'Brien, and Tyquan Thornton just happened to be the collateral.
07:57No, no, he chewed out some wide receiver.
07:59I can't remember who the hell it was.
08:00But, you know, and we've heard, you know, stories before.
08:02Some guys just let their emotions get the best of them at that moment in time.
08:07I think Patrick Wawa has a different leash than Swayman does right now.
08:11I understand that.
08:12Nobody's saying that.
08:13But I know from being a player in that moment, it doesn't matter if you're the guy with six Super
08:19Bowls,
08:20or you're the guy who this is his first postseason run at it.
08:23Yeah, I don't know, because there's varying reports on whether they pulled him or whether he pulled himself.
08:30So...
08:30He does call the timeouts.
08:32Well, he was the only reason it wasn't 10-0 in the first period.
08:35No, I mean...
08:36He has a cause to be upset.
08:38He has a...
08:39It's about how you show it.
08:40He has a gripe.
08:41You don't do it on the bench when you're getting destroyed.
08:45Unless you think you need to, Greg, right?
08:47Like, unless you think your coach doesn't inspire in that way, and your team is flat and disgusting,
08:53and he was like, we can't do this.
08:55And so maybe in his mind, that's the way he tries to lead.
08:58And he is trying to be extra fiery to kind of inspire these guys to, I don't know, get their
09:03act together.
09:04He might have been like, we look like crap.
09:06We all stink.
09:07I don't know how you...
09:08Whatever it is.
09:09But we talk about guys in that position of being leaders and showing some emotion.
09:15We criticize guys who don't have emotion.
09:17Now we're criticizing a guy who does have emotion.
09:20I asked Judd slash Judge if there were any, like, real stakes for Marco Sturm in these playoffs about, hey,
09:27like, him proving himself as a coach.
09:29And it sounded like not so much.
09:31He got them to the playoffs.
09:32But if you have another performance like this, and that's the way that the team goes out, like, doesn't that
09:39reflect really poorly?
09:41Short of some miraculous comeback, they're cooked.
09:45Right, but there's a difference between being cooked like you were cooked yesterday and cooked by going out and, like,
09:50putting up a good fight, right?
09:51Right.
