00:00So I wanted to have a quick conversation, maybe not quick, maybe at length.
00:05Joshua Josephs was, I will say this, the first round went so fast.
00:11Even Friday night, the second and third rounds moved.
00:16Saturday was long as hell.
00:18Every time I saw the pick is in, the next group had like a minute,
00:23and it was going again.
00:25Saturday, I didn't pay attention.
00:27Well, that's okay.
00:28Saturday, I was just all over the place.
00:29I was like, listen, they're not going to be on TV for the most part anyway.
00:32Right.
00:33So Saturday, I was paying attention, and Washington didn't have a fourth-round pick.
00:39The fourth round took forever.
00:40Then there's comp picks at the end of the fourth round.
00:43So Washington didn't make a pick for a while, and when they did, at 147, fifth round,
00:50they took Joshua Josephs, an edge rusher out of Tennessee, 6'3", 240.
00:56In his official bio, in one of the notes, which I found pretty damn interesting from Scouts, Inc.,
01:03wingspan of an NBA small forward, which is intriguing.
01:08Now, could you have gone other directions there?
01:12I misspoke earlier.
01:14Sam Hecht went about four picks before Josephs, and you wonder if maybe that center's there.
01:20A center went just ahead of them.
01:21Parker Brailsford from Bama went just ahead of Josephs.
01:24So there was like this mini run of centers.
01:26Jaeger Burton went just after Josephs, the Kentucky kid.
01:30But one player I did really like that was available when Josephs went was Keith Abney,
01:36the corner out of Arizona State.
01:40He went maybe 10 picks later to the Lions.
01:43There's always going to be players, right?
01:45Jalen Kilgore was the safety some folks talked about.
01:47He went 167.
01:49South Carolina kid got drafted by the Bills.
01:53But I know one central premise of football, Brian, you can never have enough pass rushers.
02:01You can't.
02:01Period.
02:03And I think they are feeling very, very comfortable with the guys they have at this point at cornerback
02:10if the pass rush improves.
02:13You know, you're expecting to get Amos back.
02:17You have your guys got a free agency.
02:20You still have Mikey around.
02:22I think that they feel that they're better suited than a lot of us think.
02:26Well, I think I agree with that.
02:28I do think that.
02:30I also think if you play a different defensive style that generates pass rush,
02:36the corners are going to look way better.
02:38And I think with Styles and Chennault and whatever McGee's role is,
02:43like your middle of that defense, the second level, the linebacking core,
02:47has gotten so much more athletic.
02:49I do think it'll help the corners if the middle of the field isn't always open.
02:52True.
02:53If tight ends can't outrun everybody on seams.
02:55I mean, go back to like as early as week two against the Packers.
02:59What's my man's name from the Packers, the tight end, that just torched them in that game?
03:05All day.
03:06Craft.
03:07Yeah.
03:09Like week two against the Packers, they could not cover the middle of the field.
03:16Couldn't get no pressure on the quarterback either.
03:19Specifically with Joseph's, I land here on Saturday draft picks.
03:26I don't think many fans are equipped to have that strong of an opinion on Saturday draft picks.
03:32And many of them don't.
03:34It's what they've heard.
03:36And I think that's where we have to get.
03:38Listen, if you, as I tell you all the time, I say, we're not here just to entertain the fans.
03:43We're here to also educate them.
03:45And sometimes it takes an extra layer of work for us to bring education to them.
03:51Real quick.
03:52Go ahead.
03:52Tucker Craft in that week two game.
03:55I watched it.
03:56That was the first real exposure of Washington's defense.
04:00I watched it.
04:01Six for 124 and a touchdown.
04:03I watched it.
04:05The tight end had a 60-yard touchdown.
04:07Yeah.
04:07It's not supposed to happen.
04:08I think fans have to also understand, just because you hear something and repeat it,
04:13doesn't mean you know what you're talking about.
04:16Sometimes you have to take what someone said and then go take what somebody said opposite
04:23of them and go somewhere in the middle.
04:25You'll be better suited.
04:26You know what I mean?
04:27I think that's the ultimate thing.
04:29When I go and I start looking at stuff, I don't just follow the person that agrees with
04:32somebody.
04:33I don't just follow the person that disagrees with somebody.
04:35I try to look at both of those layers, look at other people, and then formulate an opinion.
04:40Not just, oh, I heard this from my favorite analyst, so now I'm going to go just repeat
04:47it.
04:47Sometimes you're repeating stupidity.
04:50I think specifically with Joseph's, you're excited about the prospect, right?
04:55Size, speed, played at the highest levels of college football.
05:00The one thing I heard was his junior season, there was a lot of excitement that year.
05:08He had nine TFLs, a sack and a half, and I think folks were hoping for more the senior
05:15season.
05:15Statistically, the numbers went up a bit.
05:18He's a really unique athletic profile.
05:21Profile, I think there's, again, you don't want to get too far down the roster rabbit
05:28hole because it's April 27th and they don't play a game until September 10th, but when
05:33you start looking at the ends, they added a bunch, right?
05:39Like, Owe got real money for the long term.
05:41They add a Menehu, that's a one-year deal.
05:44They added Chason, that's a one-year deal.
05:48You've got Dietrich Wise, that's a one-year deal.
05:52On the edge, Drake Jackson's a guy there was some excitement about working his way back
05:56from that injury.
05:57Dorrance Armstrong going into the final year of his deal.
06:01So there's interest there.
06:04Javante Jean-Baptiste is a player that's now coming off a major injury.
06:08Like, we'll see how that all shakes out, but adding a pass rusher to me, fire away.
06:14But we always say build by the draft, and if you have people in place and you name some
06:22of those deals are one-year deals, if you draft a guy and he comes in and he catches
06:27and he learns, when he gets on the field, he don't get on the field inexperienced.
06:32Right.
06:33He gets on the field in a year or two and he comes with some level of experience or can
06:38just fit in.
06:39Like, you see other teams, when a veteran guy leave, a younger guy come in.
06:43You've got to get into that rhythm, and you get into that rhythm, you could be having
06:46success for a long time.
06:48But everybody that's drafted is not going to be on the field week one producing.
06:54Some of them are there to help build, to get up there.
06:58You can keep damn near 20 people around on a practice squad and all that kind of stuff.
07:03So you're going to have some guys that you feel are going to grow in your system.
07:07Well, the reason I wanted to point this out, like, you could be a fifth-round defensive
07:18lineman and find some real success in the NFL.
07:24Like, there are, Grady Jarrett was a fifth-rounder, Robert Mathis was a fifth-rounder, and then
07:32if you look at, I think the Rams have done a really good job.
07:35When you lose, you know, one of the best defensive players of all time in Aaron Donald, and you
07:42have to kind of try to rebuild that on the fly over time.
07:45That's a hell of a step back.
07:47It's not just first-round picks that do that.
07:50And if you look at the Rams roster, the kid, Kobe Turner, that's been really good for them,
07:56was a third-round pick.
08:01They picked up the dude, Murchison.
08:03That is, like, a rotational piece.
08:05He was a fifth-round pick.
08:09Tyler Davis, who's played a ton for them, was a sixth-round pick.
08:12Like, you have to develop it.
08:15Ty Hamilton played in 14 games for them last year as a rookie, was a fifth-round pick out
08:21of Ohio State.
08:22Like, you have to develop the interiors of your lines internally.
08:28That's just the reality of building up strength in the backbone of the game.
08:37Your offensive line or your defensive line, you'd love to supplement that with a first-rounder,
08:42some studs, maybe a free agent.
08:44But, like, you have to build up your interior depth through the draft.
08:49Yeah.
08:49And you have to hit on picks.
08:52And Joseph's, our guy, you know Shane that calls from all over the world.
08:56He is a huge Tennessee fan, and he has called in.
08:59Shane, give us your Joshua Joseph scouting report.
09:03Hey, B-Mitch, all-A's, JP.
09:06Hey, look, here's the thing.
09:07We got the best skill in draft at number five.
09:11I was disappointed we didn't get McCoy at that point.
09:14He's going to be another skill.
09:15Look, I'm a Tennessee fan, but look, the product is on the field.
09:19He was a beast at Tennessee.
09:20He can get off the edge, and he can set the edge.
09:23And now we, this linebacker, according to now, is probably one of the fastest, most athletic
09:28in the NFL right now.
09:30Definitely in our division.
09:32They're younger.
09:33That's what they did, right?
09:34They went out, we said we went younger and faster.
09:36He is a monster off the edge.
09:38All you got to do is watch tape on him.
09:40He can set the edge, and he played at a high level, right, in SEC, and he just is explosive.
09:46And he's a good character in the locker room.
09:49There you go.
09:49Thanks for the call, man.
09:50I appreciate it.
09:51Now, let's go to a non-Tennessee fan for the Joshua Joseph scouting report.
09:55Why, Brian, you're our official SEC correspondent.
09:59I don't, when, one, let's start here.
10:01Did Auburn play Tennessee this past year?
10:03So, I was, I saw this pick on Saturday, and I was trying to think of, like, if this guy
10:09made an impact against Auburn.
10:10I don't think he ever played against Auburn.
10:13I mean, because Auburn and Tennessee don't always play, right?
10:16That's West versus East or whatever?
10:18Yeah, they merged it when they made the SEC bigger, but that's only been a couple years,
10:22and I don't think we've played Tennessee since then.
10:24Okay.
10:25Well, thanks for that.
10:26Terrific reporting.
10:27Sorry.
10:28It's all right.
10:35Joseph's fifth-rounder, you're looking for guys to make the team at that point, and I
10:42think if he can be a run-stuffer, that gets pretty interesting.
10:48Reading from his scouting bio, Joseph's length, we talked, 84-inch wingspan is pretty outrageous.
10:56Yes, outstanding.
10:57Joseph's length allows him to keep offensive linemen off his chest and gives him an advantage
11:01when working on the edge.
11:02He will need to continue developing his pass rush arsenal and mix in more moves to put
11:07him more consistent as a rusher, but he does show deceptive play strength, having the ability
11:12to push the pocket and drive offensive tackles backwards.
11:15I think there's a lot to like there.
11:17We'll see.
11:18It's a young man with extreme length, and how can you use that?
11:24Like, how can you get involved in the pass game with that?
11:26Just knocking passes down.
11:28It does show at least a glimpse, I would say, in his pass-defensed numbers.
11:35In each of the past two seasons, he's knocked down three passes.
11:39He has nine passes defensed in four seasons.
11:42That's probably more than like most corners.
11:44I think guys in college, they're trying to get to the quarterback.
11:48In the pros, they tell you, if you can't get to the quarterback, get your hands up in the
11:52passing lanes.
11:54And when you got guys with long arms like that, say, an 84-inch wingspan, he gets his
12:00hands up.
12:00He's going to have to, some quarterbacks are going to have to try to throw it over him
12:03or try to throw it around him, which helps out your defensive backs.
12:06How about this, Brian?
12:07And maybe this is directly attributable to the arm length.
12:11I don't know.
12:13Played 11 games for the Volunteers last year.
12:1633 tackles.
12:18So that doesn't wow you, I would say.
12:20Of the 33 tackles, six were a tackle for loss, four were for a sack.
12:25But these numbers are extremely high, I would say, for the amount of tackling.
12:33He had three forced fumbles, three passes defense, and two fumble recoveries.
12:39And he returned one up, 41-yard house call.
12:42Like, some level of playmaker in there.
12:44Yeah, yeah.
12:45And maybe that's the long arms.
12:47The long arms can help him out, but he hasn't having a motor.
12:51That can be something.
12:52In each of the past two seasons, three forced fumbles, three passes defense.
12:59That ain't nothing.
13:00Like, the thing of it, like, Jado, I think we have to discuss a lot of this stuff.
13:07But ultimately, guys get in the training camp, they start learning how to play at this level.
13:12Sure.
13:13And improvement can still happen.
13:16Guys get drafted every year.
13:18And for some reason, I think we scrutinize the guys from the third, I mean, fourth round on,
13:24more than we do the guys in the first, second, third round.
13:26You know?
13:27And it is weird why we do that.
13:29Okay.
13:29You
