01:56for a lot of our guests skiing in those conditions.

02:35when she tripped on a thick patch of snow.

04:48The heavy snowfall means it's all systems go for Harry and his roads team.
04:53So, yeah, some days we can get on it in terms of road management and making sure that the
04:58road is clear and accessible and chain-free in the mornings.
05:01But other days, you know, we can't control the weather.
05:03We can only watch it and try and make a plan according.
05:08And, yeah, some mornings it comes in really hard and we're, we're left kind of chasing the weather
05:14and a bit behind and, um, it can cause a bit of chaos.
05:19We are all hands on deck at the moment, um, getting everybody up the mountain safely.
05:26We are currently preparing for 15 potentially centimetres throughout the day.
05:32Yeah, we can definitely see the, uh, snow changing at the moment.
05:38It takes a small army of dedicated roads crew to keep the access roads safe in these conditions.
05:45Tyre chains are a must on days like today.
05:48Here in New Zealand, there's only usually one standard set of tyres, um, and they're not made to withstand ice
05:56and snow.
05:57What happened?
05:59Ah, there's a nice sideways slip!
06:03So, when it becomes slippery, the tyres are just naturally going to slip out and you're going to lose traction.
06:09So, chains just help in giving that extra bit of grab onto the road.
06:13So, we're hoping people will be bringing up chains today.
06:17So, we're going to set up a, not a chain bay as such, but just a checkpoint.
06:20So, the cones will hopefully slow them down so we can ask them whether they've got chains on or not.

11:32That mixed in with a concussion where someone can't give us a clear indication
11:37of what's going on with their spine means that we have to put them in full spinal mobilisation.
11:42It's hard to tell if his back is realistic, if he really sore or not,
11:47but we'll take the precautionary measure.

18:06We really want to make sure that we get this patient down to see our doctor and stabilised as fast

18:50The risk is if we don't decide to use that immobilisation, that we can cause further damage to the spine

19:09and have real bad repercussions for a patient.

19:38So Izzy was skiing on the M1 and her skis crossed and she fell over and heard her pop.

19:49The popping sound Izzy heard could indicate a ligament tear.
19:54So when I examined Izzy's knee, it was hot and swollen.
19:59I saw her on this side.
20:01She couldn't move it properly so she couldn't flex it to 90 degrees.
20:06And are you able to bend it?
20:08I don't know.
20:09To be able.

20:13What sort of?

20:14That can indicate a lot of different things.
20:17Anything from a fracture to an ACL or a bad sprain.
20:22Do you want to try and see if you can stand on it?

20:30Whether or not Izzy can wait there will help diagnose the severity of her injury.

20:42So with Izzy, she also couldn't put her weight through it.

20:51And the mechanism of the injury made me suspicious for an ACL.
20:57So what you'll need to do is go down to Queenstown and get an X-ray of your knee.
21:02We just need to make sure that there's no breaks to any of the bones in your knee.

21:11But the blame game is just getting started.

21:16He took me up it thinking I'd be able to do it.
21:20I was literally saying I'd be so proud of myself if I get down to the bottom.

25:18And, uh, he had C-spine pain and back pain, but it was hard to gauge the pain amount.
25:25So, when Tristan came in, we took it really seriously and had him in full spinal precautions.

25:32Yes, I did. Like, when he fell over, basically, he would scream really loud.
25:37And then after that, he was out of it.

25:40Because when someone has midline tenderness, that raises the concern of a spinal fracture.
25:47Dr. Nicky will need to conduct a full spinal examination to assess the severity of Tristan's back.

33:02It's their job to keep the slopes safe and running smoothly.
33:07The team we have in Ski Patrol, we've got about 17 full-time Ski Patrol staff.
33:11You know, we're just, um, basically ambassadors for the mountain.
33:14We're out there chatting to people every day, riding the chair with people.
33:18Helping them put their skis back on, find where they need to go.
33:22Just really trying to make, uh, a good experience for everyone on the mountain.
33:28I couldn't ask for a better team.
33:31Today, Team Ski Patrol are taking on the rest of the holidaymakers.
33:36They've nominated one of their fastest skiers to compete.
33:39So we got the Dash the Cash, um, happening today.
33:45So we're gonna have a bunch of people racing for, I think, $1,000.
33:50It's a mix of running and skiing and obstacles along the way.
33:55It's gonna be absolutely chaotic.
33:59With a $1,000 paycheck up for grabs, James carries the hopes and dreams of Ski Patrol on his shoulders.
34:06Being a patroller out there, I had the whole patrol team, uh, on my back to represent.

35:09Shoulder injuries are super common. It's my bread and butter.
35:12So I'd send it with my brother.
35:15Decided to duck off the edge of the, uh, of the actual run to hit a massive jump.
35:20Went a little too fast and just macked it way too hard.
35:24So the collarbone, it's kind of like the bumper of your car,
35:28absorbs some of the impact and can quite easily break.
35:32Unlike young Tristan and Sam, Darshan's injury appears to be quite obvious.
35:37What's your pain out of ten at the moment?
35:43It was quite an easy assessment for Darshan.
35:46I could see quite clearly there was an obvious step deformity in his collarbone.
35:52So he had broken that.

35:56Darshan and his girlfriend, Alanka, are visiting from Australia.
35:59They didn't get far into their holiday before disaster struck.
