00:00School dinners are set for a revamp.
00:03These proposals will represent the biggest changes to school food standards in England for more than a decade,
00:09with ministers saying they want to improve nutrition and reduce unhealthy eating among pupils.
00:15I've been on our streets in the northeast asking people their views.
00:19When I was in high school, it was kind of one day a week was the fried food,
00:25and then the rest of the week was all relatively healthy options.
00:28So I think that's a really good way of doing it.
00:31I think there should be an opportunity to have the fried food, like, once in a while.
00:36I think there's a lot of obese kids now, and something should be done to, yeah,
00:43counteract that a bit more healthy eating, especially for kids, young kids.
00:50I'm all for that.
00:54Because as they get older, if they start off like that, they're going to end up eating like that for
00:59the rest of the days, aren't they?
01:00It's a great idea.
01:01Get rid of the fast food, the high-processed food, the pizzas, the chips, let's get the veg, let's get
01:07the potato,
01:08the meat and the diet, let's get back to healthy eating.
01:11I don't think you can force a kid in to eat what they don't want, will they?
01:17They'll just leave us. Come on.
01:21The government says the aim is to improve children's health, pointing to concerns about obesity levels
01:26and diet-related health issues among young people.
01:29But teaching unions and school leaders say while they support healthier meals in principle,
01:34they are warning that funding will be key to making the changes work in practice.
01:39Yeah, well, at home, obviously, hopefully the parents are instilling that in them.
01:43But when they go to school dealers, they haven't got that choice.
01:46The choice is taken away from them.
01:48They're getting off at sausage roll, just stuff like that.
01:50They're not getting off at what we used to get when I was at school back in the day.
01:54Yeah.
01:55Well, when I was school and school dinners, there was a potato shortage.
02:03And we had to have bread and margarine, and it was absolutely disgusting.
02:09Put me off margarine for life.
02:11I'd rather have dry bread.
02:13My favourite was probably, like, jacket potato with, like, some salad.
02:20Like, very filling, very good for the day.
02:23My least favourite was probably, like, those watery little pasta pots,
02:28because they're just always, they're just not right.
02:31I hated rice pudding.
02:34I hated rice pudding, but I used to...
02:40I like my chips like anybody else, but in moderation,
02:44but spam fritters and things like that.
02:46But as you get older, you realise they're bad for you.
02:49The proposals are now subject to consultation,
02:53with final standards expected to be confirmed later this year
02:56and phased in over the coming years.
