00:00I've been smiling ear to ear for a while now, you know, after all the high fives and everything kind
00:07of settled in.
00:08But, you know, we've got Sonny Stiles.
00:12And for, I can't tell you how many reasons why we liked him, but you can go on and on
00:19about him.
00:20And we're thrilled to have him.
00:22And so to pick Sonny Stiles with the seventh pick, yeah, didn't think he was going to be there.
00:27I thought there was a low chance. There was a chance.
00:30But it was an easy pick when he was there and we were on the clock.
00:37GM Adam Peters meeting with reporters late last night in Ashburn.
00:41After Sonny Stiles became a commander at pick seven, the extreme makeover defensive edition continues.
00:49Starring Ty Pennington. Move that bus or whatever he used to say.
00:53Very, very different looking front seven for Durante Jones.
00:56I want to get into him mixing some potions, what this could look like with one of the most athletic
01:00linebacking cores we've ever seen in the NFL now.
01:02If you're looking at RAS scores, Leo Chennault third all-time when he came out.
01:06Sonny Stiles first all-time coming out this year.
01:09And Frankie Louvo's no slouch coming downhill in space either.
01:12You said something that I want to jump on, but in a good way.
01:15If you just go, okay, that's the middle linebacker.
01:19Thanks, I'll see you guys at the team meeting.
01:21That's a mistake.
01:21Like, and I don't believe that's going to be the case for the record with Durante Jones in this new
01:26defense,
01:26but you now have some of those, you know, on a string where it looks like one guy's going one
01:31way,
01:32this guy's going the other way, this guy's saying, what do you want from me?
01:34Like, you have the opportunity to do something special here.
01:36And I'm hoping if you just drafted an off-ball middle linebacker who's going to wear the green dot
01:40and make a couple defensive calls, say, ready, break, then I can understand being underwhelmed.
01:44The argument that I made last night is, I think this is where the puck is going in the NFL.
01:50Meaning, teams are using 12 personnel more and more and more.
01:52They want versatility on offense.
01:54They want position flex and the like.
01:56I think defenses are going to have to respond.
01:58I don't want to have to do a million sub-packages because the offense is going to have an advantage
02:02when my fifth cornerback trots on the field to try to stop a certain subset of things
02:07or my extra running linebacker or my, this is my slow linebacker for rundowns.
02:11This is my fast linebacker for this.
02:13I don't want that.
02:14I want one guy to be able to do all of the stuff, and here's your Swiss Army knife.
02:18So we just had a caller last segment ask about the possibility of a tradeback versus Sonny Stiles.
02:24They would have preferred that.
02:26It's always difficult to talk about this because you have no idea what the offers were.
02:31But for the exercise, I will say, Stiles versus the deal, the Chiefs made to come up from 9 to
02:386,
02:38which was one pick above Washington.
02:40Washington, they wanted to make sure that commanders didn't take Mansoor to lane.
02:44So by that logic, I think you could say maybe if they couldn't make the deal at 6,
02:48or if you could have gotten on the phone with them and made the deal so they came up to
02:527,
02:53they would still guarantee themselves Mansoor to lane because now they know you're not taking them.
02:58You're moving back to 9.
02:59And they have to give up less to move up because they don't have to get up to 6 in
03:02front of you.
03:02They can just take your 7th pick.
03:04In a world where that's an opportunity, and they're willing to give you something similar,
03:09probably not the same deal because you're one pick lower in terms of the value chart,
03:12but something in the 40s and something, let's say, around 100 or whatever, and you move back to 9,
03:19if you're asking me would I rather have added a 40-something pick and another later pick and chosen at
03:269,
03:26knowing how the draft played out, I would have done that.
03:29Yes, probably over Sonny Stiles.
03:31I love the player, but now you're talking about Caleb Downs at 9,
03:35plus something in the 40s that you don't have,
03:37so you'd be picking 10 picks in tonight, and then again at 71,
03:40you'd have two picks this evening, which would be a really big deal.
03:43So I think it'd be silly to say you wouldn't rather have that trade back or consider it.
03:49Now, if Stiles becomes Brian Urlacher,
03:53obviously they're going to be glad they stuck and they picked.
03:55It's just a really hard exercise because we have no idea what was available to them,
03:59how interested they were in doing it.
04:01I think Chris is probably right, by the way, when he says they turn the pick in quickly.
04:05Based on what I know about how much they like Stiles,
04:08I think he was on their stick and pick board.
04:10I think they would prefer Stiles over a move back,
04:14but if you're asking me, hypothetically,
04:17Stiles or going back to 9, if that would have presented itself,
04:20I probably would have done B.
04:21Yeah, now, they've made trades, certainly.
04:23Laramie Tunsil's here, Marshall Latimore was here, etc.
04:26It's not as if they're immune to it, but they didn't seek a trade actively,
04:29we don't think, for Teller Biotish.
04:31I know Adam Peters came out after Dan Quinn said that
04:34and sort of cleaned that up a little bit,
04:35but still, they didn't make a trade at the trade deadline
04:37when they were two and a million,
04:38and who knows how interested they were in a trade here.
04:40But if you ask me just on paper,
04:41would I rather move back a couple spots,
04:43end up with Caleb Downs and more picks?
04:45I'd have taken that.
04:46Right.
04:47Stiles, who was my favorite defensive player in the class, though,
04:51being a commander is still really hard not to get excited about.
04:55You've got to get a weapon at 71,
04:57and I think if you get the right receiver that falls into your lap,
05:00it makes the whole thing work a little better.
05:02Let's go to Tricky in D.C. on the fan.
05:03Hey, Tricky.
05:05Hey, what's up, Grant, Danny?
05:07Hey, bud.
05:08Hey, I got to,
05:09if anybody has a problem with Sonny Stiles,
05:14now I know he's a linebacker,
05:16but I can envision him being used exactly like Kyle Hamilton.
05:21I can see that with the size.
05:23He's the same size as Kyle Hamilton.
05:25He's actually taller, and he's faster.
05:27Yeah.
05:27So I don't see why he couldn't do some of those same things athletically.
05:31Hey, Grant, I got a question, Grant.
05:33Yeah.
05:33What is the protocol for NFL signing UFL players?
05:39Can they sign them in season?
05:41Yeah, they could do it right now, to my knowledge.
05:43Yeah, you would call the agent and work out a contract,
05:45and they could leave to go play in the league.
05:47Maybe the next sentence was,
05:48can they sign the kicker real quick?
05:50Yeah.
05:51If it's about Matthew McCrane, yeah, bring him in for a workout.
05:53I've seen a couple people knock.
05:55I know my buddy John Kime tweeted something about how he was 8-for-13 in the NFL.
05:59That was five, six years ago.
06:01Who cares?
06:03You can't get better.
06:04It's not like you're a cornerback, and at his age, it's a problem.
06:07Kickers early in their career versus later in their career get better all the time.
06:11I don't care what he did when he was 8-for-13 six years ago.
06:14That's about as relevant as what I had for lunch when it comes to if he can kick in the
06:18NFL or not.
06:19Let's go to Jim in Suffolk, Virginia.
06:21What's up, Jim?
06:23How you doing, guys?
06:24What's up, buddy?
06:25I was really happy with the pick for Stiles.
06:29I wasn't sure that it was going to happen until I heard the words come out of the commissioner's mouth,
06:35based on other drafts that disappointed me.
06:40But very happy.
06:42And to everyone that's saying, you know, that we missed out on Downs, Arvo, Reese,
06:48the fact is we're going to be playing twice a year for the next five years.
06:53You know, when we play the Giants, it'll be Reese and Stiles playing against each other.
06:59And when we play the Cowboys, it'll be Downs and Reese.
07:03Yeah, I love that angle, by the way, thanks for the call, of Downs in the division with Dallas
07:07and just that rivalry now moving forward between a couple of the real alphas from that Ohio State defense.
