00:05On Ask This Old House, our experts travel across the country to answer questions about your house.
00:17Today, Keith helps a homeowner run power to their new shed.
00:23It's incredible.
00:25Then, Morrow shares some of his favorite painting accessories.
00:29Do you cut him?
00:30A little magnetic.
00:31Beautiful.
00:32And, Jen and Richard play a fun game of disposal or compost.
00:38And it is chicken on Ask This Old House.
00:52Hi, Jeff.
00:53Yeah, Heath.
00:54Nice to meet you.
00:55You as well.
00:55So, I saw that you wrote in about a shed and getting some power out there.
00:58I did.
00:59We put that shed up not that long ago and I'd really like to get power out to it and
01:03I'd like to know how.
01:05Let's go take a look at it and see what you have in mind for using it.
01:07Great.
01:08This is Newton, by the way.
01:09Hi, Newton.
01:13Oh, wow.
01:14This is a great shed, Jeff.
01:15Yeah, it is.
01:16It's nice.
01:17It's gonna be nice.
01:18So, what are some of your plans for it?
01:19So, my plan is the right side with the double doors is gonna be the shed.
01:24And then the idea is gonna be to use this half as a place where I can work on things,
01:29paint things, whatever you can't do in the yard that is weather permitting.
01:32Sure. So, you never had power in the old shed.
01:34No, I thought I would and it was just too small.
01:36Okay. So, charging stuff, maybe a small workshop, some lights.
01:41Yeah.
01:41And who knows, micro down the road?
01:43Hopefully, it will.
01:44But for now, it should be enough where I can get things done.
01:47All right.
01:48So, I got a couple of thoughts and you tell me what you think.
01:51Okay.
01:51I'm thinking maybe a panel over here.
01:54Maybe do an eight-foot LED light up here, getting a couple of outside lights, some general receptacles.
01:59But the nice thing about the panel, it'll give us room for growth.
02:02So, as you want to add things, if you brought different equipment in, if it turned into more of a
02:05wood shop or more of an enclosed space, we had some space to do that.
02:09I think the next step would be, let's go outside and take a look at that corner and see if
02:12we have a path to get to the house.
02:13Okay.
02:14So, we know we're going to this corner of the shed and that looks wide open. That should be pretty
02:17good.
02:17Okay.
02:18And then we have a nice flat yard. This is kind of nice. This shouldn't be too, too bad, hopefully.
02:22And we're coming back to the house. So, whereabouts can we go in in the house exactly, Jeff?
02:25Well, the back of the house where the door is, is a crawl space. So, we probably have to go
02:31all the way into the corner.
02:32All the way to the corner, so that crawl space really isn't accessible?
02:34It's not.
02:35Okay. So, we're going to go back to that corner and that should get us into the regular basement?
02:38Yes.
02:38So, I see what looks like, what did you say, that was a coal chute maybe?
02:41No coal chute, yeah.
02:41And then a window, and then we have some trees and the garden there. So, it looks like we kind
02:45of want to go between that coal chute and the window?
02:47Yeah. It looks the most direct route.
02:49All right. Well, from there to the shed should be a straight shot, but let's go take a look in
02:53the basement and make sure we can actually get to that point.
02:55Let's go in.
02:56All right. All right. So, this looks like the window that we saw outside, right, Jeff?
03:00Yes.
03:00And we can see the insulation where the coal chute used to be. So, this is the area that we
03:04wanted to come into.
03:05Now, I don't want to come in here because we have all the plumbing pipes and everything going upstairs.
03:09So, I think we'll bring our PVC in on this side of this joist. So, we'll hug kind of close
03:14to this window, come in here, put our box, and then run our cable towards the panel.
03:19Whereabouts is the panel?
03:20It's in the right-hand corner.
03:21All right. Let's go take a look at that.
03:22Okay.
03:23All right, Jeff. So, this is the main panel?
03:25It is.
03:26All right. Looks like you got a lot going on in the house.
03:28Aye. A little overkill.
03:29That's okay. This isn't rated for those little tandem breakers looking at the panel cover, so I don't want to
03:34put those in. Is there anything we could possibly get rid of or combine that you know of?
03:38Yeah, there's a few outlets on the old workbench that I won't be using any longer.
03:42Oh, great. So, use part of this as a shop, but some receptacles that we don't need anymore, especially if
03:45we're going to put the shop out in the shed?
03:46Yes.
03:47Great. So, we can get rid of those, make some space, and put our new 2-pole 60-amp breaker
03:51here. So, looking at this, I think we've got a pretty clean shot back over to where we're going out.
03:55I think we have our path, so I think that part's good. I'd say the next step is going to
03:59call someone I know to start digging out back, and I'll order some supplies, and we'll get started. What do
04:03you think?
04:03Great. Let's get started.
04:04Let's head up.
04:06Hey, Ryan.
04:07Hey.
04:08Thanks for coming.
04:08Thanks for having me.
04:09So, I think we've got a pretty simple job for you. We're looking to just dig a trench from that
04:13corner of the shed over there in a fairly straight line back to the house over there.
04:17We're going to try and get in between that old coal chute and the window over there. Might be a
04:20little tight, might have to do a little hand digging, but hopefully not too, too bad for you.
04:23No problem. We'll get it done. And, we think two feet deep, a little sand underneath the pipe?
04:28I think somewhere around two feet will probably be good. We're looking to get to 18 inches at the top
04:31of the pipe, so we want to go down just enough, get a couple inches of sand below it, and
04:34then get the conduit on top.
04:35So, if you can get us somewhere around two feet, that'd be great.
04:38You got it.
04:39All right. And we've already called dig safe, so we should be set to go. So, if you want to
04:42get started on that, I'm going to grab some materials and get started in the shed.
04:44Perfect. Thank you.
05:10All right, Jeff. So, Ryan's down there finishing up the trench. He's just cleaning up that last end up against
05:14the house.
05:14So, while he's finishing that up, before the sand goes in, we're going to go ahead and put our fitting
05:18in here. It's going to be our starting point.
05:20So, what I have is I have an LB fitting, L back, so the wires come up and go in.
05:25It's going to mount like this, probably right about there.
05:27And then I have our expansion fitting. And what I want to do is I want to set it. You
05:31can see this is designed for expansion.
05:33So, as the earth heaves, we get frost heaves around here that this is going to move up and down.
05:38And it's not going to damage the wire, damage the pipe, or rip anything out of the building.
05:41Everything stays intact. So, where I'm going to set it is on this black line. I want that right about
05:47there. That gives us plenty of movement in both directions for what we're doing.
05:51And we want to see where we're going in. Now, I know we measured center of our bay off of
05:55the outside trim was 29 in the inside.
05:59And that, of course, puts us right there where we don't want to be. So, what I'm going to do
06:02is I'm going to come to the left a little bit.
06:05We'll drill the hole here, and then I'll just take a heat blanket and bend that pipe if we need
06:09to get to the center of the knockout for the panel.
06:11So, I want to find our height. And I just want to be somewhere up here above grade.
06:17We don't want it sticking up too far because I don't want to see it too much. You can obviously
06:20paint it to make it blend in with the shed.
06:22But I think somewhere down here is fine. The expansion's above grade. That should look pretty good right about there.
06:30So, I'm just going to make a little mark.
06:37So, what I want to do now, Jeff, and I'm just going to put a pilot pit through.
06:43After that, then we'll put the larger hole through and get this mounted.
06:46Makes sense.
06:51It looks good.
06:53So, now that we have that where we want it.
06:59Just going to make sure we're plumb.
07:02Take this clip.
07:09So, that's in place. This will be our starting point for the PVC in the trench. We'll be able to
07:12come down and come over.
07:15And once we're complete, we'll put a little bead of caulking around this to kind of help seal this up.
07:21So, let's go see if Ryan's all set and we'll work on getting the sand in here and then we
07:24can get the PVC in.
07:25Great.
07:26Alright, Ryan, it looks like the trench is done. It looks great.
07:29It didn't look like the digging was too bad either. Not too many rocks or anything crazy in there.
07:33Not too bad, but we're still going to put some sand down underneath.
07:35Absolutely. And the reason is because sometimes we have stuff like that.
07:39If anything heaves or frost or forces anything up, this rock might try to come up through the ground.
07:43We have a bed of sand around the conduit to keep everything protected.
07:46So, it's just a good practice to get into.
07:48So, if you have plenty of sand, you're going to run the machine.
07:51Jeff, you and I are going to get busy jumping that trench.
07:53Start spreading the sand out and make it smooth.
07:55And we want to make sure that we still have 18 inches to the top of our pipe when all
07:58said and done.
07:59But I think that trench looks plenty deep enough.
08:03Alright, so now that we have the sand in the trench, it's time to install the conduit.
08:06So, we left it up here because it's easier to work with up on the grass area than it is
08:09in the trench.
08:10And we're not going to fill it up with sand as we go.
08:12We want to keep it as clean as possible.
08:14So, we're going to go ahead.
08:15We have a bell end and a smooth end.
08:18And we're going to go ahead and glue these together.
08:20So, can I ask you a question?
08:21Absolutely.
08:22Why did you have me lay it out in this direction?
08:24Bell end that way.
08:25That's a great question.
08:26The reason is your yard pitches back from the house towards the shed.
08:30We want to have the bell facing down.
08:33I want it like this.
08:35So, if water happens to get in there and starts running by, I want it to go around the fitting.
08:40If we had it the other way and we were running the bell uphill, water can come in and has
08:44a chance to get around this edge.
08:46In case the glue didn't set entirely properly, it has an option to get in there.
08:49And we want to try and avoid that.
08:51Makes sense.
08:51And the other thing I want to do is we can either tape the end or I'm going to use
08:54this little cap.
08:55I'm going to have you put this on the open end as we throw it in the trench just to
08:58help keep any sand out.
08:59We're not going to glue it.
09:00Just a real light press just to kind of help keep the conduit clean.
09:03So, we're going to go ahead and clean these two.
09:05Glue them.
09:06And I'm going to put our 90 on this end.
09:08We'll get this into place.
09:09Then we can measure and connect on this side.
09:11And then we're going to work our way back.
09:34Turn.
09:35There you go.
09:36Like it?
09:37Like it.
09:39The conduit is covered with a layer of sand for protection.
09:46All right.
09:47So, for this we have to actually drive two ground rods.
09:49My first one's there and they want to be six feet apart.
09:52The ground rod's eight feet.
09:53So, I'm just going to use this as a quick measurement so I know I want to be at least
09:56this far away.
09:58So, now I'm just going to take my bare number six here and connect it to the two ground rods.
10:06And you can see we didn't cut the wire.
10:09We slid this connector down so we can go ahead and make this connection unbroken.
10:16And once I tighten this up, all right, that's in place.
10:24Then we're going to go into the building and into the panel.
10:27All right, Jeff.
10:28So, we've got our ground wire in.
10:30We've got the trench filled.
10:31We're about six inches down from grade.
10:33So, we're ready to go ahead and put the caution tape in before we put the final grade on.
10:37Okay.
10:37So, this is the stuff we're going to use.
10:39I'm just going to have you walk this down and I'll tie it off to the conduit on this side.
10:43Okay.
10:45Why do you need the caution tape?
10:47We want the caution tape up here because if you ever do any digging in the yard down the road,
10:51even for plants, you're going to hit this tape first.
10:54Once you hit that, you'll know there's a buried electric line down here so you don't go too deep and
10:57you'll be careful of it.
10:58Okay.
10:59Is this a certain type of caution tape?
11:01It is.
11:02So, we use this metallic tape.
11:03It's traceable.
11:04So, the nice thing about this is if you're not sure and you want to mark exactly where everything was,
11:09I'm going to leave a little end over here that you can get to.
11:11There's a toner you can put on this and actually trace out exactly where this tape goes and this tape
11:15is directly on top of your conduits.
11:16So, it'll be easy to find out exactly where everything is.
11:19That's good to know.
11:21With the caution tape installed, it's time to backfill the trench.
11:27So, we picked this bay for our panel and this is the panel we're going to slide in somewhere around
11:32here, maybe a little bit higher.
11:34So, what I want to do is we have our PVC coming in down here already and we now have
11:39to continue that up into the panel.
11:41But you can see we have this cross block and this is our connector that's going to go in the
11:45bottom of the panel here.
11:46So, what I'm going to do is take that knockout out, slide that down, set my depth.
11:54Mark the cross block.
11:56Then I can take this back out and drill this.
12:00I'm going to do the same thing for a smaller conduit for the ground wire to come in as well.
12:03So, we'll have those in.
12:04Then we'll come back down bottom, put the PVC in, mount the panel, put the one in for the ground.
12:10Then we can pull the wires, get them into place, get some power on.
12:14Great.
12:16Now, I will just slide that ground up the conduit we just put in.
12:24I got it.
12:25Okay.
12:25Take some slack up.
12:26You got it.
12:28Let me know.
12:30You got enough to get the top of the panel and go across?
12:32Yes.
12:33Okay.
12:34All right, Jeff.
12:35So, now that Ryan's done with that trench, he did a great job with it.
12:37He's got everything graded and our conduits are completely covered.
12:39It's time to pull the wires from the house to the shed.
12:42So, what I've done, I've set up a spool up here with the wire and down here I have the
12:46pull line.
12:47So, I'm going to put a fish tape down this conduit.
12:49It's going to pop up to you.
12:50You'll tie the pull line on.
12:52I'll pull it back and I'll tie the wire on and we'll pull that to the shed and get that
12:55into the panel.
12:56So, our conduit's been oversized for future use.
12:59So, it's much bigger than we need for these wires.
13:01I'm just going to do a couple of hitches, really.
13:05And then I'm going to tape the front.
13:07What I want to do is I just want to smooth these out with the tape just in case there's
13:12an edge in the conduit.
13:13I don't want it to catch that.
13:14I want it to be able to pull right by.
13:16All right, Jeff.
13:17You want to take about six feet of slack on the pull line, please?
13:21Okay.
13:26Okay, it's started.
13:27So, you can go ahead.
13:35I'm here.
13:37Perfect.
13:38All right, Jeff.
13:39You want to feed that through?
13:40Coming in.
13:42All right, that's good for now.
13:43Let me try that.
13:51All right, we're good.
13:52Let's throw the covers on.
13:54All right, Jeff.
13:55So, now that we have the wire in here, our panel's ready to go.
13:58Everything's complete here.
13:59It's time to do the fun part.
14:00Wire the shed.
14:01So, we have a minimum requirement.
14:03When we have power to an outbuilding like this, we have to have at least one receptacle in here
14:06and one light, which we're going to have.
14:08We want a receptacle over here.
14:09You said possible fridge.
14:10Yes.
14:10We're going to have the LED light up top.
14:12And while we're at it, we're going to put an outside light over that door.
14:14I think that'll keep you pretty good for now.
14:16Yeah, that'd be great.
14:17All right.
14:17And we have plenty of room to grow.
14:18So, in the meantime, let's grab some wire and we'll get to work.
14:21Great.
14:26Make sure we've got enough to go over straight and go down to the switch.
14:44Once all the connections are made, we can add and wire the new circuits into the main
14:48breaker panel.
14:49This should only be done by a licensed electrician while the electrical service has been completely
14:54disconnected.
15:03Just in time.
15:04Great.
15:05Power's on.
15:06Everything's turned on.
15:07You want to give the lights a shot?
15:08Sure.
15:12Wow.
15:13It's incredible.
15:14It's been different, huh?
15:15I've been waiting a long time for this.
15:17Yeah.
15:17So, I mean, this is a great shed.
15:18Now you get the power out here.
15:19Honestly, I'm kind of jealous.
15:21I can't wait to get started out here.
15:23All right.
15:23This has been a great project.
15:24I really appreciate it.
15:25Thanks for your help, Heath.
15:26Thanks for letting us do it.
15:27Great.
15:31Mauro.
15:32Kevin.
15:32So, a quick refresher on kind of what we need for a paint project?
15:36Absolutely.
15:36If you get like an interior room or interior painted door, this is the stuff we need.
15:40Where do we start?
15:41So, we start with this protection.
15:43Yes.
15:43Because we got drop cloths to protect all the floors.
15:45And then we have this sheeting plastic, which has the tape on it that you can use on your
15:51walls to protect the walls.
15:52You're not painting the walls.
15:53This is very handy.
15:54And then we got this other sheeting plastic over here, which I can cover furnitures with
15:59that.
16:00Canvas on the floor, never plastic on the floor.
16:02Is that right?
16:03Or how do you treat that?
16:03I don't like to put plastic on the floor because it's very slippery.
16:06Okay.
16:07So, we protect it.
16:08Now we're painting.
16:08Well, now we're painting.
16:09So, here we have the paint tray.
16:12All right?
16:13And the paint tray.
16:14For the roller.
16:15For the roller.
16:16And then we have the rollers.
16:18It's a nine-inch roller, three-eighths.
16:20Good for all smooth surface in general inside the house.
16:23So, the nap is sort of how smooth or how fluffy it is, right?
16:26So, three-eighths.
16:27And then what would this be?
16:28Three-quarters.
16:29And you'd use this and this when?
16:31I'd knit this when I have like a texture wall or a popcorn ceiling.
16:34This comes really handy.
16:35Okay.
16:36And then this one's just for your flat surfaces?
16:37This is for the flat, smooth surface, like the walls and ceilings.
16:41And then you've got the tray, which of course is important.
16:44So, you've got the well there.
16:45You've got the well there.
16:46You've got the grit.
16:47So, you put the paint in there, take some of the excess off the roller, and go to work.
16:52Beautiful.
16:52All right.
16:52And then this.
16:54Boy, this was a game changer when they came out.
16:56This thing here.
16:56I love it.
16:57When I found it, I bought about five of them.
17:00And this is so cool.
17:01You use the small brushes to do all your cutting lines on tight space and between trim and
17:06the walls.
17:07Put it there.
17:08Do your cutting.
17:08A little magnetic.
17:09A little magnetic holds up paint.
17:11Sticks to the ferro right there.
17:12Don't need to be right into the bucket.
17:13So, small and tapered for trim, cutting.
17:16Cutting lines in general.
17:17Beautiful.
17:18And then obviously your rollers are going on this.
17:20You need that.
17:21For hand.
17:22But I see the extension.
17:23The extension.
17:24You need this one over here.
17:26So, this one is so cool.
17:28You put it right in there.
17:31Make sure that's tight.
17:33And this.
17:34You press this down.
17:35And this becomes like a telescope.
17:38Yeah, yeah.
17:38You can go all the way up to that.
17:41Get the ceiling.
17:42The high walls.
17:42The high spots done.
17:44And one shot.
17:45Comprehensive list, Mauro.
17:46But you know what?
17:47We've done this before.
17:48And I am thinking there's something missing.
17:50You're missing something.
17:51Yeah.
17:52I got it.
17:53Right here.
17:53There she is.
17:55The 5-in-1.
17:56This is not the 5-in-1.
17:57The 5-in-1 is thing of the past.
17:59This one is about 17-in-1.
18:01We got the big round over here.
18:02That's good for cleaning rollers at the end of the day.
18:05Scrape it off like that.
18:06Yeah.
18:07And then if you turn it over, there's a small one here.
18:10That's for mini rollers.
18:11But we have the range.
18:12So, you have nail pullers.
18:14You get a bunch of stuff.
18:15You scrape it right in there.
18:16That one is stitched to your hips at all times.
18:19Oh, yeah.
18:19Right here.
18:19All right.
18:20Good list.
18:20Thank you, Mauro.
18:21Hey, you're welcome.
18:24Hey, folks.
18:25And welcome back.
18:26I'm your host today, Kevin O'Connor.
18:28And we are going to be playing Compost or Dispose It.
18:32So, our contestants are going to tell us whether or not when I show them the item, if it should
18:37go down in your disposer or if it should be composted.
18:41And our contestants come to us today from Urbain, California, Mr. Richard Trithui, our plumber.
18:47I'm so glad to be here, Kevin.
18:49I love your show.
18:50Oh, wonderful.
18:51And he'll be playing against the infamous landscaper from your backyard, Jen Nuwana.
18:57Oh, my gosh.
18:58It's so exciting to be here.
19:00All right.
19:00Well, you guys ready to play Compost or Dispose It?
19:03I'm going to hold up a card.
19:04And when you see the item, you have to tell us whether we're going to dispose it or if
19:12we're going to compost it.
19:16All right.
19:17Ready for your first challenge?
19:18I am.
19:18All right.
19:19Here we go.
19:20We are.
19:20We are.
19:21We are.
19:21We are.
19:21Good.
19:22And it is...
19:25Chicken.
19:27I definitely wouldn't do the diamond grinder.
19:29It's got all that skin on it.
19:31Meat bones.
19:31Yeah.
19:32Well, I don't like to put them in compost.
19:34So, yeah.
19:35But you can.
19:36Citywide, they collect food waste, and they compost it that way.
19:40Skin goes in the compost.
19:42Bone goes to your puppy.
19:43Well, now that's exciting.
19:45Not in the grinder.
19:47You can't give dogs cooked bones.
19:49Anyways.
19:50Anyways.
19:50Kids, let's go on to the next one.
19:52All right.
19:54Now, we're going to ask, are you ready to find whether we're going to dispose or compost a
19:59banana peel?
20:01Definitely.
20:02I would go compost.
20:02Anything that's stringy.
20:04You know, banana peels, celery, anything that's stringy, you can get it wrapped around the
20:07blades and it's not good.
20:09Right.
20:09Because it just tangles up like hair.
20:11Yeah.
20:11Okay.
20:12Not just fun, educational as well.
20:15Well done, Jen.
20:16Thank you, Richard.
20:17Ready for our next question as to whether we're going to compost or dispose?
20:21Ready.
20:21Coffee grounds.
20:25Coffee grounds are not good, not necessarily in the disposal, but in the drain.
20:29You don't want the coffee grounds going down and then recoagulating down the pipe, so.
20:33Would that be like a clogged artery kind of?
20:35Yeah.
20:36Okay, okay.
20:37Okay.
20:38And on to the next one.
20:40Tough one here.
20:41Pay attention.
20:41Get ready.
20:43Ice cubes.
20:44You know, sure they're not going to put it in the compost, but I think it belongs in
20:48a glass for a drink.
20:49I really do.
20:50But if you had to pick one?
20:53Just a little bit, right?
20:54That's right.
20:54Is that an old wives' tale, sharpening blades?
20:56Yes.
20:57Okay.
20:57It is.
20:58But if you have an old wife, you're going to want that drink.
21:01So Richard, a twofer.
21:05Yeah.
21:06That's so true.
21:07That's so true.
21:08All right.
21:08Grind or compost?
21:10Pistachio shells.
21:11All day long.
21:12All day long?
21:13Yeah.
21:13Yep.
21:14You're nuts.
21:16You don't want those shells in your compost.
21:18No, no.
21:18I don't.
21:18Too much.
21:19Okay.
21:20Moving on.
21:21Just two left.
21:23That's right, Gene.
21:24It's going to come down to the last two.
21:27Compost to dispose.
21:28Eggshells.
21:29I'll take them.
21:30You take them.
21:31They say don't do it in the grinder, but we can still handle it.
21:35But they're so fragile, right?
21:36We should do it.
21:37But is it the membrane?
21:38I'd put it in the compost.
21:39Is it the membrane?
21:40No, it's just the little tiny shells, but it'll wash through.
21:43So I think it's a bit of a wise deal to not put it in the disposer.
21:46Okay.
21:47Well, especially new disposers.
21:50They're so amazing.
21:51Yeah.
21:51Yeah.
21:51It's a short game, guys.
21:53It's a short game.
21:54I'll take them.
21:55All right.
21:55Comes down to the last question.
21:57So should we compost or dispose lemons?
22:01I'll take them.
22:02I'll take them.
22:03You can put them in the compost.
22:04Yes.
22:05But save me one to grind it, to put it into the disposer, because it can freshen that chamber
22:10that can often smell.
22:12That's a great...
22:12And who doesn't want a fresh disposer?
22:14There you go.
22:14There you go.
22:15I'll share.
22:15I'll save you one lemon.
22:17All right?
22:17All right.
22:18Lemons goes in both.
22:20I think that's a fine way to end.
22:21All right.
22:21Thank you both.
22:22Did we win?
22:23Who?
22:23Yes.
22:24Well...
22:26Jack, what's the official score?
22:29Jen.
22:30Well done.
22:31All right.
22:32Well, that's it for compost or dispose.
22:34And rest assured, we'll never be doing this again.
22:41Next time on Ask This Old House, Tommy teaches Zach how to turn a flower vase on the lathe.
22:47This is so much fun.
22:49Yeah.
22:49Then, Mark answers viewers' questions on masonry cracks, offering advice on how they
22:56happened and possible repairs.
22:59And, Ross helps a homeowner upgrade the garage door opener.
23:03Voila.
23:04That's unbelievable.
23:06All that on Ask This Old House.
23:39All that on Ask This Old House, it's known as he posts at home.
