00:00What did you think when they kind of first came to you with it?
00:03Well, I got a text from Aline Brush McKenna, and it just said,
00:07let me know what you think.
00:08And I assumed, as writers do to each other, that she had written some pilot
00:11that she didn't love enough to show run and was trying to get me to do it.
00:16And I was like, okay, whatever it is, sure.
00:19Then she calls me, and she's like, you have to do this to have a worse product too.
00:23You play so-and-so, all your scenes are with Meryl Streep.
00:26I was like going to drop the phone, you know?
00:29So it was a pretty exciting overachievement for a call from a friend.
00:34What does Mindy think of this? She must be so jealous.
00:37I have never impressed Mindy Kaling more than being a part of her beloved franchise.
00:43It's like if she pitched for the Boston Red Sox.
00:45It's sort of that kind of thing for each other.
00:49What was kind of your relationship with the first movie?
00:52I loved the first movie, and to me the first movie is about excellence.
00:56It's about the unpopular person, Miranda Priestly, who strives for excellence and is rude
01:03and has a lot of quote-unquote bad qualities, but is standing up for something exceptional.
01:10And I think that's why people love the movie so much and are so inspired by it,
01:14and why so many straight guys who aren't fashion people love that movie, like myself.
01:21And what's it like to be face-to-face with Miranda Priestly and actually get the real treatment?
01:27I mean, it was amazing because I'm, you know, the one person in this whole universe of The Devil Wears
01:33Prada
01:34who has no respect for Miranda Priestly, doesn't need her for anything,
01:39thinks she's just kind of a difficult employee, doesn't get it, doesn't get it, doesn't care.
01:44And so to come face-to-face with this legend, playing a legend, and act like it's just some random,
01:52it was a great, great acting challenge.
01:54And I just had to just turn off the part of my brain that was reverential and turn it back
01:59on when we rapped.
