A 53-year-old express bus driver who was caught driving under the influence of drugs while ferrying 15 passengers was sentenced to seven months’ jail and fined RM8,000 by the Magistrate’s Court in Alor Gajah, Melaka, on Friday (April 24).

00:00A 53-year-old express bus driver who drove under the influence of drugs while carrying 15 passengers
00:07has been sentenced to seven months' jail and fined 8,000 ringgit by the magistrate's court in Alor Gaja.
00:15Magistrate Dr. Teo Shuyi meted out the sentence after Mohamed Tahmrin Ibrahim pleaded guilty to dangerous driving while under the
00:24influence of drugs.
00:25He was charged with driving a bus in a manner dangerous to the public at kilometre 196.1 of the
00:34North-South Expressway southbound near the Ayer-Kero interchange at about 3.50 a.m. on April 15th.
00:42The offence, under Section 42, Subsection 1 of the Road Transport Act 1987, Amendment 2020, read with Section 34 of
00:52the Penal Code, carries up to five years' jail, a fine of 5,000 ringgit to 15,000 ringgit and
01:00a minimum five-year driving ban upon conviction.
01:03According to case facts, the accused drove dangerously by leaning back in his seat and steering with one hand while
01:10under the influence of drugs, putting his passengers and other road users at risk.
01:15The incident, recorded by a passenger, went viral on social media.
01:20Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamed Ehsan Nasaruddin urged the court to impose at least 12 months' jail, citing the seriousness of
01:29the offence and its widespread circulation.
01:31Defence counsel Kamaria Madhyussov sought leniency, saying the accused is a widower earning about 2,500 ringgit a month and
01:41suffers from asthma.
01:43The court also ordered him to serve an additional five-months' jail in default of payment and disqualified him from
01:50holding or obtaining a driving licence for five years from the date of conviction.
01:54Police tracked down the driver on April 16 after a 1-minute, 20-second video showed him driving one-handed
02:02while leaning back.
02:03Alor Gaja O, CPD Superintendent Ahmad Abu Bakar said the man tested positive for Shabu and admitted taking the drug
02:12before the journey.
02:13The bus was travelling from Ipoh to Johor Bahru at the time.
