00:03The Avengers were formed to make the world a safer place.
00:07I feel we've done that.
00:11The world owes the Avengers an unpayable debt.
00:17You have fought for us, protected us, risked your lives.
00:23But while a great many people see you as heroes, there are some...
00:31We prefer the word vigilantes.
00:40When we were sitting down and beginning to think of the third Captain America film,
00:43we realized that Winter Soldier and the fact that audiences had embraced that film all around the world
00:48gave us the leeway to do things that were tonally somewhat different than we'd done in our films in the
00:54past,
00:54but also do things that have incredible repercussions for the films to come.
01:00There's one storyline from the comics that is the epitome of bringing the Marvel characters to a turning point,
01:07and it's Civil War.
01:10Iron Man and Cap have such a good juxtaposition.
01:12They come from such opposite worlds and beliefs and their personality,
01:16and it just builds this really wonderful friction.
01:19The concept of Civil War is very important to us.
01:21We felt like we needed to go in a radical direction if we were going to do another Captain America
01:26film.
01:26When you flip through the issues of Civil War, you'll have, in any given panel,
01:30a dozen characters fighting a dozen characters.
01:32And there are hundreds of characters over the course of that seven-issue book.
01:35It was always led by character, and then spectacle would follow.
01:39Marvel and Kevin, particularly, don't mind the big swings.
01:42So the thing that maybe some people might step away from and say,
01:45oh, it's too early for this, or we don't have enough characters or whatever,
01:49that we couldn't possibly do that, they go, let's try it.
01:51And in trying it and in developing it, we all go, oh, this won't be exactly like the comic,
01:56but boy, this will be pretty cool.
01:58By this point, people know Steve Rogers very, very well.
02:02People know Tony Stark very, very well.
02:04We know how they work together, and we know that they have some issues with each other.
02:07They're very, very different people.
02:08You know, you may not be a threat, but you better stop pretending to be a hero.
02:12A hero? Like you?
02:14You're a laboratory experiment, Rogers.
02:17The book, Civil War, is so grounded in this idea of Captain America leading one side
02:21versus Iron Man leading the other side that we just felt that if we were going to try it
02:25in the MCU, it was critical that we had those two components.
02:29Civil War became the overriding principle.
02:32It was like, you do realize we need Robert.
02:37Wow, it's so weird how you run into people at the airport.
02:40Don't you think that's weird?
02:41Definitely weird.
02:42To me, what's super exciting is, like, Cap needs to grow and change and have darker,
02:46more complex challenges.
02:48And I think for Tony, it's like, you know, what are the real world challenges
02:51and ramifications of dealing with superheroes on planet Earth?
02:54There's no decision-making process involved for me here.
02:57We need to be public-checked.
02:58Watching the two of them together and seeing them, you know, being in the moment
03:03and listening to each other was absolutely so much fun to watch.
03:07Everybody is always looking for ways to surprise themselves and surprise audiences
03:10about where we can go.
03:12And we had a very clear idea about how we wanted to do that with this movie.
03:15And I think once Robert got into that, he became very, very excited about it.
03:19And he's been an amazing collaborator on this film.
03:21It's no secret, I love Chris Evans.
03:23I deeply respect the guy, and I learned from working with him.
03:27And he's also really reverential to me, which goes a long way.
03:33Downey might be my favorite actor.
03:34And it's just, it's such a, you know...
03:37I'm glad we spoke before this little sit-down.
03:41The fact that now Iron Man and almost every Avenger is in Captain America Civil War
03:46showcases just how far we've come in the development of the cinematic universe.
03:51That we can now, with these beloved actors,
03:53these beloved, globally recognized, iconic characters,
03:56bring to life some spectacular storylines from the comics is a dream come true.
04:02The movie is consciously an effort to bring some of the tone and style of Winter Soldier
04:08and merge it with a new style that we're going to use for Infinity War,
04:12which is a grander-scale look and less handheld.
04:14So the styles are merged, and as the movie progresses,
04:17it shifts from one tone and style to another.
04:19And that was very important to us.
04:21Yeah, this is going to be a great shot.
04:22Directing is storytelling.
04:24And when you hear them engaging you in the story and coming up with ideas
04:27and seeing the glint in their eye, the excitement about doing something like this,
04:30you know you have something special.
04:31Love the Russos. Love me some Russos.
04:34We just have a pretty good line of communication open between us.
04:37There's nothing I don't like about them as directors.
04:39There's just kind of a simpatico with the way that I like to influence things
04:43and then step back and really follow their lead.
04:46It's just this kind of dance, this creative dance you want to have.
04:48They know these comic books and these scripts inside and out.
04:51I think it wasn't a fluke what they did on Cap 2.
04:54You know, and now coming into this, you see it.
04:57You see the footage.
04:58They just have an eye and a gift for telling you stories.
05:01You have the wings pop out.
05:02He does that as you come down.
05:09We're here on day one on set and what we're working on right now
05:13is the first fight between Captain America and his Russian Russos.
05:23We've got to get out of there. Bullshit!
05:25And then you go.
05:27We want these fights to be big character moments.
05:30We don't want there to be fighting just for the hell of fighting.
05:33There's a lot of story coming into these fights.
05:35And Sebastian in the last one did a bit of fighting, quite a bit,
05:38but not as much as he did on this one.
05:40Seb put in so much work in pre-prep to train these fights.
05:44With Chris the same, Chris will pick up fights so quickly
05:46where if it's hand-to-hand combat, they're so good you can use them.
05:50And that is a better way to shoot fights
05:52because you see more of the actor, you can shoot wider.
05:55You don't have to hide anything when it's your real actors doing this combat.
06:02The Bucky apartment sequence, that was insane
06:05because that is like a kick-starter for action in this movie
06:08because it starts with the apartment, goes to the stairwell,
06:11goes outside the apartment, and then into the second unit
06:13where they did that epic car chase.
06:15Three, two, one, action!
06:28Next to him, he just slips his arm in
06:30right before he jacks out the door.
06:44We follow the continuing story of the Winter Soldier
06:47who Captain America cares very much about
06:49and who believes he can get his best friend back.
06:51Bucky was the guy who's always been there,
06:53he's always had his back, and Steve's a loyal guy.
06:55I'm sure there's a certain sense of guilt
06:57based on what happened to Bucky.
06:59Which Bucky am I talking to?
07:00Your mom's name is Sarah.
07:04You used to wear a newspaper in your shoes.
07:06As much as Civil War is the trappings of the film,
07:09it's really about Steve making a decision
07:11for the first time that's personal
07:13over sort of a global version of doing the right thing.
07:16I was really excited when I read the script.
07:17I didn't really know where they were going to take it
07:19because the playing field was so open
07:21they could have done anything with the character.
07:24What was fun about the script was that
07:27when you were reading him you never knew
07:28where he was going to swing, which side of the fence.
07:30He might become the Winter Soldier
07:32and he might be Bucky Barnes.
07:34So there was a lot of playing room there
07:35and that was fun.
07:37More kills than anyone in Hydra history.
07:40And that was before the serum.
07:43You know, my main goal over the past three movies
07:45has been to find Bucky.
07:47So now that I've found him
07:48is just trying to nurture a relationship
07:51between the metal arm guy.
07:53You were that in it.
07:53I was in it.
07:54You were in it.
07:55I was going from the beginning of the movie.
07:56Falcon, who is Cap's new brother-in-arms,
07:59is his best friend in the modern world.
08:01Full-on Avenger.
08:02Hey, you're looking at an Avenger guy.
08:04Remember that.
08:05This guy.
08:05Yeah, thank you.
08:08Marvel has made a concerted effort
08:09to help Sam Wilson evolve into an Avenger.
08:14It's great.
08:14I love my new suit.
08:15I got my little splash of red.
08:16I got Tony Stark-arized.
08:19Yeah, he high-teched up my suit.
08:21And I got Red Wing.
08:24Thanks, Sam.
08:25Don't thank me.
08:26I'm not thinking nothing.
08:28What I'm holding is the scale model of Red Wing.
08:32A lot of the flying around we'll be doing with CG.
08:34But when we go out on set,
08:36we like to have lighting reference.
08:37So we'll shoot a shot with CG Red Wing.
08:40You won't see any Red Wing flying around,
08:42but afterwards we'll walk in
08:43and then pretend like we're flying Red Wing
08:45with the model on the stick.
08:47And then when it appears in the theater,
08:49it'll look real.
08:52I got my new jetpack.
08:53There's nothing, you know,
08:55natural about flying for a human.
08:58Man, it's so annoying
08:59that you guys won't let me fly.
09:00But, you know, I could be doing worse.
09:04I could be a superhero that runs.
09:06And I'd just be running around all day.
09:08I'm so tired.
09:11How many takes of this are we doing?
09:14And action, action!
09:20There's a giant set piece
09:21that opens the film in Lagos, Nigeria,
09:23which is a lot of fun.
09:25Our amazing locations team
09:27found this back lot, essentially,
09:28where we built Lagos, Nigeria,
09:30which wasn't an easy feat.
09:31When you're able to film in places
09:33that are a 360-degree real environment,
09:37it allows the cameramen
09:38a lot more freedom
09:39as to how they frame shots.
09:40It allows the stunt guys
09:41to really build things
09:42in an environment that's real,
09:44that gives them scale,
09:45so that when you see the film,
09:47it's really going to feel
09:48as if you've gone to Africa.
09:50Where are we at?
09:51We're back in Lagos.
09:52We got Crossbones doing his thing
09:54to the Frank Grillo in the house.
09:59I thought this would be
10:00a great opportunity
10:01to have just an unapologetic,
10:06murderous, venomous villain
10:07who could kind of stand his ground
10:09with these superheroes.
10:10Sorry, I don't work like that anymore.
10:13Get me another superhero.
10:15I'll bang him up, too.
10:18When I saw the costume,
10:19I was excited.
10:20The look of it was kind of posted
10:22apocalyptic.
10:23It suits the character.
10:24Like, when I get in the suit,
10:26I feel mean.
10:28I feel angry.
10:31You know, Rumlow has a history
10:33with Cap,
10:33and when they get to the point
10:35where they are about
10:37to apprehend him...
10:38You know, I know you.
10:40Your pal, your buddy, your Bucky.
10:42Rumlow blows up a bomb,
10:44trying to blow himself
10:45and Cap up.
10:45Luckily, Scarlet Witch
10:46is close enough
10:47where she can contain the bomb
10:49with her powers
10:50and get it away from them,
10:51but it ends up
10:52killing a few bystanders.
11:00I remember reading it
11:01and being really excited
11:03by my character's
11:04just arc in general.
11:05I like the idea of her being terrified
11:07of her own abilities.
11:12The Russos wanted to really keep
11:15Wanda's movement
11:16to be Wanda's movement
11:17because that's what makes her unique.
11:19So the new elements
11:21that we are adding
11:22is flying, floating,
11:23those kinds of things.
11:24It's not just shooting energy
11:26towards robots.
11:27There's some things
11:28that aren't just about
11:30being harmful.
11:30It's about moving things.
11:32It's about helping Cap
11:34take a jump.
11:35Like, how do I get energy
11:36to launch him?
11:38We try to ground it
11:40in this sort of telekinesis,
11:43applied telekinesis.
11:45Seems like she's getting
11:45better at it all the time.
11:47Yeah.
11:48And we'd love to draw on that
11:49for an Infinity War DVD.
11:51Yeah.
11:52If you were to ask us
11:54who we think the most powerful
11:55in the universe is at the moment
11:57just based on what we've seen
11:59on screen, it's the Scarlet Witch.
12:01That makes her a very interesting
12:02character because she's
12:03also the youngest.
12:03Her abilities are just
12:05probably the most formidable.
12:06I think we need each other
12:07in a lot of ways.
12:08You know, I need her abilities
12:09for a lot of things
12:11and then she needs me
12:12to kind of keep her head straight.
12:14She's kind of a loose cannon,
12:15insecure and powerful
12:16and just all terrifying in itself.
12:22The Russo Brothers,
12:23it was my first time
12:23working with them.
12:24They're very passionate
12:25about this universe
12:26but they're also just
12:27cinephiles in general
12:28and they refer to
12:29a lot of different things.
12:30They refer to like Hawkeyes
12:31like maybe think like Han Solo.
12:33I'm like, well,
12:33I'm glad you think that way
12:34because that's kind of
12:35what I was kind of hoping for.
12:37Very irreverent
12:38and kind of same sort
12:39of skill set essentially.
12:40Don't you think
12:41Laura would be disappointed?
12:42Me or you.
12:43What you're seeing here
12:44is the third version
12:46of the Hawkeye bow.
12:48Made a few changes.
12:50Lightweight.
12:51Easy to handle.
12:53We took back
12:54and went to the Avengers 1
12:56Quiver
12:57with a few modifications.
12:59It's slick.
13:00It's thinner.
13:01It's lighter.
13:02Easy to work with.
13:06The bow.
13:07We need to make the draw
13:08pretty easy
13:09for certain scenes.
13:11And the way to do it
13:13is we take
13:14the bow
13:15and pull it back
13:17and make a mold
13:18in this position
13:20and remake
13:21the entire bow
13:22so that
13:23when he grabs it
13:25he needs to pull fast.
13:26Not too much stress.
13:27We have a 12 hour day.
13:28He's got to pull it
13:29in excess of 100 times a day.
13:32Got to help him out.
13:33Buckled in?
13:34Yeah.
13:35No, I'm good.
13:36I'm good, Arrow guy.
13:37Let's go.
13:37Let's go.
13:38One of my most favorite things
13:39in this universe
13:40is when the characters
13:41use each other's assets
13:43or their abilities
13:45to even be better.
13:47And I kind of do it
13:48with Ant-Man.
13:53I'm going to put
13:57a little coffee in him
13:58but he's alright.
13:59Right?
14:00When I showed up here
14:01for the first time
14:02and was doing a scene
14:04with Captain America
14:05and Falcon
14:07and all of them
14:07it's like,
14:08whoa.
14:09I turned into
14:09a bit of a 10 year old.
14:10It was pretty strange
14:11and really cool.
14:12And kind of the first time
14:14I thought,
14:14man,
14:15I really am part of it.
14:17This is awesome.
14:18This is Captain America.
14:20You.
14:23Right on.
14:24I think on the face of it
14:25if you think of Ant-Man
14:26you think,
14:27man,
14:27he's going to be overmatched
14:28when he faces
14:28the other Avengers.
14:29But the truth is
14:30the power to shrink
14:31is something
14:32that shouldn't be overlooked.
14:33I'm the boss.
14:34I'm the boss.
14:34I'm the boss.
14:35I'm the boss.
14:40The new suit
14:41is really streamlined
14:42and it looks
14:43a little more high-tech.
14:44Now it looks like
14:45it's been tricked out
14:47and kind of fits in
14:49with modern times
14:51a little bit more.
14:52And it was exciting.
14:54You know,
14:54I had that same feeling
14:55as when I tried it on
14:56the very first time
14:57in Ant-Man
14:58which is just
14:58I'm looking in the mirror
14:59like this looks awesome.
15:02What the hell was that?
15:04The helmet is different.
15:05You know,
15:05they're no longer
15:05the cables that snap back
15:07and go back to the helmet.
15:08Antennas go up
15:09from the bottom now.
15:10The regulator is different.
15:12There's no dial on it.
15:13I think that Hank
15:14and Scott
15:15have been hard at work
15:16really getting
15:16this thing fine-tuned.
15:18Ant-Man has the history
15:19of anti-Stark sentiment
15:22as expressed by
15:23Hank Pym
15:23and Ant-Man.
15:25Guess Hank was right.
15:26You never can trust a Stark.
15:28He lines up pretty cleanly
15:29on Cap's sign.
15:34You want to surprise
15:35the audience
15:36and you want to make
15:36some choices
15:37that are interesting
15:38because if everyone
15:39can predict
15:39who's going to be
15:40on whose side
15:41going into the movie
15:42we didn't do our job right.
15:43So there are some
15:44surprising choices
15:45made in the film.
15:46But also I would say
15:47what was really
15:48determinative too
15:49was it was really
15:50important to us
15:51that every single character
15:52had a personal
15:53emotional reason
15:55for making the choice
15:56that they made.
15:56That was trackable
15:57in their arc
15:58from the beginning
15:59to the end of the movie
15:59and so that I think
16:00was the most fun part
16:01of deciding
16:02who sighted where
16:03was figuring out
16:04what on the deepest level
16:06could move these characters
16:08to go one way or the other.
16:09It's not villain versus hero.
16:11It's friends.
16:12It's family.
16:12This is sometimes
16:14the most dramatic conflict
16:15when it's people
16:16that actually have a history
16:16and care about each other.
16:23I obviously start out
16:24with Falcon Mackie.
16:26You know,
16:26he's been Cap's
16:27right hand man
16:28for a while now.
16:29Falcon,
16:30he slows everybody down.
16:33You know,
16:33he's like the character,
16:34like the bigger guy
16:36in the Goonies.
16:37That's how I look at him.
16:38And we've since,
16:39you know,
16:39we found Bucky first.
16:41We broke him free.
16:41So we in turn
16:43have the Winter Soldier
16:44on our squad as well.
16:45We also have
16:45the Scarlet Witch.
16:46I was just kind of
16:48looking around like
16:48we've got a really good team,
16:49you guys.
16:50And it felt that way.
16:52And we had like
16:52all the jokey people
16:53on our team.
16:54What are you guys doing?
16:56Don't worry about it.
16:57It's just a...
16:58You guys are going to
16:59go through the fire or something?
17:00We recruit Paul Rudd.
17:02We recruit Ant-Man.
17:03Mackie does
17:04because Mackie
17:04has a little history with him.
17:05I thought I didn't have
17:06any abilities.
17:07What's Ant-Man going to do?
17:08Can't forget, Renner.
17:09We get Hawkeye.
17:10That's a huge get.
17:12We're facing off
17:14what I think is
17:15a pretty good team
17:16on the other side too
17:17if I think about it.
17:23Tony's side
17:24is a little more complex.
17:26The surprise members
17:27of that team
17:28is Black Widow.
17:30You partially agree with me.
17:31I'd like to take that back.
17:32It's unprecedented.
17:33I'm thrilled.
17:34She makes an ideological choice
17:35rather than an emotional choice.
17:37The emotional choice
17:37obviously would be
17:38the side of the cat.
17:39It's painful, I think,
17:41that she's...
17:41I don't want to say
17:42turn her back to Steve,
17:43but she's definitely...
17:44You know, she's gone
17:45in a different direction.
17:46What are you doing here?
17:48I didn't want you to be alone.
17:50They do care about each other.
17:51They are in some ways
17:52a brother and sister,
17:53but it doesn't mean
17:54they agree about everything
17:55all the time.
17:56And that's what makes
17:57Civil War so compelling
17:58is that people
17:59that you would naturally think
18:00would flock together
18:01are split apart
18:02by something that's very real.
18:04In the absence of Fury,
18:06she's thinking
18:06like a Nick Fury in this movie.
18:08More guns,
18:09which means more headaches
18:10for somebody, probably us.
18:12What makes this character
18:13really heroic
18:13is that she's kind of
18:14dug her heels in
18:15and said,
18:15look, you know,
18:16I could kind of
18:16go down this road,
18:17which would be
18:18the more desirable road
18:19personally,
18:20but she chooses
18:22this kind of greater calling.
18:23And in this film,
18:24we really see her
18:24move closer
18:25to a kind of
18:26leadership position.
18:27You'll have to understand
18:28if we seem
18:29a little blindsided.
18:31We knew someone
18:32was going to have
18:32to think one way
18:33and then see the consequences
18:35of their actions
18:35and turn.
18:37We chose Natasha
18:37as the one
18:38who could have a conscience
18:39ultimately and say,
18:40oh, this is too far.
18:41He's a bit torn
18:42in her relationship
18:44with Tony.
18:45I think she really
18:45sees Tony very clearly,
18:48sees his weaknesses
18:50as being a danger
18:52for the team.
18:53We'll handle it.
18:54You don't get it, Stark.
18:55It's not yours to handle.
18:56It's clear you can't
18:57be objective.
18:58I'm putting special ops
18:59on this.
19:00What happens
19:00when the shooting starts?
19:01What, do you kill
19:02Steve Rogers?
19:06Well, it's great always
19:07to bring back
19:07a character
19:08into the universe
19:09who has a point of view
19:10and then apply
19:12that point of view
19:12or alter it slightly,
19:14give them a new
19:16presentation.
19:17What if I told you
19:18we were putting
19:18a team together?
19:20Who's we?
19:23We thought it'd be
19:24interesting to take
19:27General Ross,
19:28who was this hard ass,
19:30give him a heart attack,
19:31mellow him out a little bit,
19:32but give him that same
19:35agenda of control.
19:36Everyone was on board,
19:38which made it great.
19:39There was a lot of
19:39excitement and enthusiasm.
19:41I mean, he's a
19:41phenomenal actor.
19:42I found something.
19:45Forty years in the Army,
19:46he never taught me.
19:50respected.
19:51If you get William Hurt,
19:52you gotta use him.
19:53You seriously think
19:54I'm gonna listen to you
19:54after that fiasco
19:55on Leipzig?
19:57You're lucky you're not
19:58in one of these cells.
19:59It's funny,
20:00because I have a bit
20:00of a trippy kind of,
20:02you know,
20:03arc with him,
20:03but I adore the guy.
20:05How do they look?
20:07Thrilled, Tony.
20:08They look thrilled.
20:08I was absolutely riveted
20:12by the comics
20:14and found them
20:14to be so imaginative
20:16and so morally authentic.
20:18They asked real questions.
20:19One thing that I've always
20:20wondered about
20:20in all my readings
20:21of all of these
20:22superhero comic books,
20:24what about the
20:24collateral damage?
20:25Suddenly I've got lines
20:26about it,
20:26and I've been waiting
20:27for that all my life.
20:28For the past four years,
20:30you've operated
20:30with unlimited power
20:31and no supervision.
20:32They want us to sign
20:33the Sokovia Accords,
20:34which will allow the UN
20:36to tell us when
20:37and where to go.
20:38Steve feels this is
20:40the wrong move,
20:41Tony feels it's the right.
20:42And that kind of
20:43begins the conflict.
20:44You need an actor
20:45of his magnitude
20:47and his presence
20:49to be able to stand
20:50in front of that group
20:51of actors,
20:52hold the room,
20:53and make the audience
20:54fear for the future
20:55of the Avengers.
20:56And if we come to
20:57a decision you don't like?
21:00Then you retire.
21:08The War Machine
21:08Rhodey, the war machine,
21:09here's a guy
21:10who's only really ever
21:11served in the military.
21:12So the idea of oversight
21:13to him is nothing new.
21:15Right.
21:16117 countries
21:17want to ratify this.
21:18You're just like,
21:18nah, we got it.
21:19Look, how long
21:19are you going to play
21:20both sides?
21:21There's only one side, Sam.
21:23It's usually Rhodey
21:24who's trying to pull Tony back,
21:25and now Tony's saying,
21:27no, I'm kind of on this side
21:28and we need to do it this way.
21:30It's nice to have
21:31still yet another progression
21:33to their relationship.
21:34We need to be put in check.
21:35Whatever form that needs to take,
21:37I don't care.
21:37I'm game.
21:38I don't want to be
21:39in a universe
21:40where Rhodey and Stark
21:41aren't still brothers,
21:43and they've been through
21:44so much that it would be like,
21:45that to me is almost
21:47would be like,
21:47that's too many fractures.
21:50War Machine has
21:51a whole new look.
21:52He's a lot bulkier
21:53than he was
21:53in the previous movies.
21:54It feels like it's back
21:55to being a full-size,
21:56almost wearable tank
21:58in a lot of ways.
21:59Sorry, Cap,
22:00this won't kill you,
22:00but it ain't going to tickle either.
22:02Every time I'm in the suit,
22:04there's improvements.
22:05It gets lighter and lighter.
22:06So this suit is probably
22:07the lightest and most,
22:09you know, malleable.
22:10It's been yet.
22:11I could actually touch my nose
22:12with my arms this time,
22:13so I was very happy with the suit.
22:18Stand down now.
22:20Stand down now.
