00:01This universe is only one of an infinite number.
00:08Worlds without end.
00:11Some benevolent and life-giving,
00:14others filled with malice and hunger.
00:18Dark places where powers older than time
00:23lie ravenous and waiting.
00:32Who are you in this vast multiverse?
00:42For the annals of history, you can look at the cinematic universe of Marvel
00:46and certain elements that have become signature elements.
00:50The main thing, of course, is interconnectivity.
00:52If you talk about the plan and how it unfolded for this,
00:56the major innovation was bringing all these elements together.
00:59It's this Rubik's Cube of an execution, and it's just amazing.
01:04We are ten years into our journey with these superheroes,
01:07and now the world is pretty massive.
01:09The idea that all the characters could cross over to each other's films,
01:12that was always baked in.
01:13And the first version of that, of course, was Nick Fury in Iron Man 1.
01:16Mr. Stark, you've become part of a bigger universe.
01:19You just don't know it yet.
01:23That universe goes back to the first Captain America film, the first Avenger.
01:27Captain America worked with Howard Stark.
01:29What about this one?
01:29No, no, that's just a prototype.
01:30What's it made of?
01:33Vibranium is stronger than steel and a third the weight.
01:35He knew him long before Tony Stark and Iron Man were ever on the scene.
01:39Oh, really? You two knew each other?
01:41He never mentioned that.
01:43Maybe only a thousand times.
01:45He was a founding member of the S.H.I.E.L.D.,
01:46and Hank Pym became sort of an agent known as the Ant-Man for S.H.I.E.L.D.
01:50The Pym particle is a miracle, please.
01:52Don't let your past determine the future.
01:55Using S.H.I.E.L.D. to connect the films was great.
01:57The seeds were being planted.
01:59Each film can introduce you to new characters
02:02that you see throughout the cinematic universe.
02:04This happened in Iron Man 2 with Thor.
02:09Sir, we found it.
02:11It follows film after film.
02:13You look at Thor, you get to meet Hawkeye in the sharpshooter.
02:16You want me to slow him down, sir?
02:19Or are you sending in more guys for him to beat up?
02:21Marvel have been so on point with those crossed over moments.
02:26Hey, you want to have a rousing discussion about truth?
02:28Honor.
02:29Patriotism.
02:30God bless him!
02:32There were a couple of loose ends as we were putting together
02:34Thor The Dark World.
02:35One of them was what happens to this ether.
02:37Something that is very important.
02:39And we thought, wait a minute.
02:41What if we had a few Asgardians come in and deliver it to the Collector?
02:44One down.
02:48Five to go.
02:49Ties up a bit of a loose end from the actual film you just watched,
02:52but at the same time introduces you to something that is completely crazy.
02:56And we knew that audience would be like, what is going on?
03:00Who is this guy?
03:01All of which would be answered the next year in Guardians.
03:03I felt like it was a hint that at some point they had the idea
03:06that the Guardians would be meeting up with the Avengers.
03:09It was really exciting.
03:10They do have a structure for introducing a lot of those characters.
03:13I've been very fortunate to be able to start out with Hulk
03:16and have that continue to grow.
03:18What if I told you we were putting a team together?
03:21Who's we?
03:24In the Captain America Civil War, General Ross comes to see the Avengers
03:27in their new Avengers facility with the Sokovia Accords.
03:30Thunderbolt Ross felt like a really good fit
03:32because you're dealing with the regulation of superheroes,
03:35which he was interested in even back in The Incredible Hulk.
03:37So there was a natural connective tissue to that character.
03:40The Avengers were formed to make the world a safer place.
03:44I feel we've done that.
03:45Tell me, Captain, do you know where Thor and Banner are right now?
03:52In Bagnarok, Thor has a meeting with Strange on Earth to help find Odin.
03:57So Earth has wizards now?
03:59The preferred term is master of the mystic arts.
04:02You can leave that now.
04:03That's part of the comic book universe I grew up with.
04:05Loving that when there were crossovers.
04:07What are you doing here?
04:08First off, I'm a big fan.
04:10Appreciate it.
04:11It's one of the fun things in Ant-Man that parallels the comic books
04:14is like, oh, I love Ant-Man, I love all the powers.
04:17Oh, here he is over in this comic book.
04:18Now he's fighting the Falcon.
04:19What's that gonna be like?
04:21There is just something chemically awesome
04:24about seeing these different heroes
04:27interacting with each other for the first time.
04:29We need to go.
04:31Avengers Age of Ultron introduced some new characters
04:33within the body of that film.
04:35And Captain America Civil War introduced Black Panther.
04:39Then, over the course of his own movie,
04:40we get to explore the world of Wakanda.
04:43This never gets old.
04:44Whose entire technology is based on vibranium,
04:47the very rare, very valuable material
04:50Captain America's shield is made from.
04:52Wakanda opens up a whole new realm of possibilities
04:55in terms of power, in terms of threats, in terms of technology.
05:00Now, more than ever, the illusions of the vision
05:04threaten our very existence.
05:06There's so many different characters,
05:08and they're moving in and out of these different worlds.
05:10All the different mythologies all come together
05:13and play off of each other.
05:20Since the end credits of Avengers 1,
05:23Thanos has been lurking in the shadows of our universe.
05:26He has had his hand in almost every action
05:30that has occurred on a grand level in the MCU.
05:39All surrounding his desire to obtain these Infinity Stones,
05:44which have played a big part in many of our other films.
05:48Each of the relics that we see as these Infinity Stones
05:52tees at a larger story.
05:53Before creation itself, there were six singularities.
06:00Then the universe exploded into existence,
06:03and the remnants of these systems
06:06were forged into concentrated ingots.
06:11Infinity Stones.
06:13We've introduced the Tesseract,
06:16which was revealed to be the Space Stone.
06:18We introduced the Mind Stone,
06:20which came out of Loki's scepter,
06:21and then into Vision's forehead.
06:24We introduced the Time Stone,
06:26the Eye of Agamotto, that Doctor Strange wears.
06:30And, of course, the Power Stone,
06:31as we saw the Guardians struggle with it and deal with it.
06:35So the notion that these storytelling devices
06:38that we've seeded into every film
06:39will continue to play a part and come together
06:42was an early idea that we had.
06:45Every story that Marvel has told
06:47since Iron Man 1
06:50finds a narrative thread
06:51in these next two Avengers movies.
06:53A big part of our creative process
06:55in figuring out these movies
06:56is just talking about
06:57how do we pull those threads forward?
07:00What's the most fun way,
07:02the most interesting way,
07:02the most surprising way
07:03we can use those threads in this movie
07:05to sort of feed the story?
07:10Thanos' motivation is to rebalance the universe
07:12as he sees it.
07:14So when he figures out
07:14that the Infinity Stones
07:15could do this for him
07:17in the snap of a finger,
07:18that becomes his main goal.
07:22And now it's not just the Avengers
07:24that have to ultimately stop it.
07:25It's the Guardians joining the Avengers.
07:27I think that's what's also exciting
07:29about Avengers Infinity War.
07:30Who the hell are you guys?
07:38I think it's the biggest
07:40visually stunning smorgasbord
07:42effects-driven film you could ever imagine.
07:44It's beyond impressive.
07:47It's epic.
07:48It's got the heart
07:49and the moment to think about
07:52where do we go from here.
07:53Stakes are very high
07:55and this is not an easy battle.
07:58It's legit.
07:59Marvel Cinematic Universe
08:01will never be the same
08:01following these movies.
08:06There was an idea
08:08to bring together
08:10a group of remarkable people.
08:12To see if we could become
08:15something more.
08:18So when they needed us,
08:20we could fight the battles.
08:23That they never could.
