00:00You
00:17Bubba yes, my son tell me a story which one
00:27Wakanda is more advanced and has more intelligence than anywhere else on Earth
00:32The world of Wakanda is a bit magical
00:34And it's not quite otherworldly like Asgard or Guardians of the Galaxy
00:39But it is a little bit more than what we've seen here on Earth
00:44It's beautiful
00:46The culture of Wakanda is very old
00:49The history and the traditions and how they're used to doing things
00:53A big function of how Wakanda works is staying out of the spotlight
00:57You know, staying in the shadows
00:58My prince, we are home
01:05Wakanda is like nothing any of us have ever seen before
01:09It's beautiful and it's powerful
01:13This never gets old
01:20Something that was really important to us was to make Wakanda feel like a place that could exist on Earth
01:25Rather than some completely made of place that was a fantasy land
01:28And part of that is building sets
01:29And part of that is looking for cultural references that are very real and very alive in Africa
01:34And building that into the plot of the story
01:39Ryan was really particular about how to tell the story of Wakanda
01:42Actually going to Africa, going to the continent was extremely important for us
01:46Because that's where, you know, the heart of the narrative takes place
01:49Ryan is a super visual person
01:51He had gone to write
01:54He was in Africa
01:55And it really started with him just sending me pictures
01:57Pictures of, like, the bells on people's ankles
02:00Pictures of shells
02:01What people were wearing
02:03You know, different masks
02:05So it was just us going back and forth
02:07I knew it was something that we could recreate from a place of fantasy
02:13A place of African culture
02:16And a place of imagination
02:22The world of Wakanda
02:23The idea of a kingdom
02:25The many tribes that make up the population of Wakanda
02:28Are all things that are both pulled from publishing
02:30But also pulled from the real world
02:33In this film, we're talking about the diversity within
02:37A very, very large African population
02:41That has been assembled
02:43To bring this one nation to life
02:46This film takes inspiration from different tribes
02:49From all over the continent of Africa
02:51And that's refreshing to see
02:54When you visit Jabari land
02:56You're going to see these beautiful, expansive
03:00Wooden structures
03:03It's a physical embodiment
03:05Of how grounded these people are
03:08They're connected to the earth
03:09You know?
03:18It's been really intense
03:20Watching Xhosa people and figures
03:22Seeing their manner
03:23And just going through that world
03:28We've been using Xhosa
03:30Which is one of the many languages of South Africa
03:32From the Cape region
03:33It's the language of Mr. John Connie
03:35Who of course was in the Civil War movie as T'Chaka
03:38And then we had the Jabari
03:50Who's the other tribe
03:51And they haven't interfaced with Wakanda
03:54In centuries
03:55So I was talking to Ryan about that
03:56He said, I'd like it to sound really different
03:58And I said, why don't we go to West Africa?
04:00Let's go to Nigeria
04:02And so he said, how about let's do Igbo?
04:04Jabari!
04:05Abiyah!
04:07We wanted something that had its own personality
04:10And had its own beauty
04:11For my mountain-strong people
04:15Who have been sequestered in the hills and the mountains
04:18Who have developed to some degree their own culture up there
04:23And one thing that's great about African culture
04:24Is the clothing that people wear
04:26What people put on their bodies says so much
04:28You know, and we're kind of leaning into that heavy
04:31We wanted to show all the tribes
04:33You know, East Africa, West Africa, North Africa, South Africa
04:37We were able to combine regions of Africa
04:40And then mix it in our own way
04:43We just went through all her references
04:45All my references
04:47And we just talked about the colors that we liked
04:49And what traditions that we thought were important
04:52To carry on in the film
04:55The world is changing
04:57The outside world is catching up
04:59And soon it will be the conquerors
05:03Or the conquered
05:06Wakanda is not necessarily a homogenous group of people
05:11There are different tribes with different points of view
05:14And each tribe have their own agendas
05:18So now we get into the sort of geopolitics of Wakanda
05:24There are people that don't believe that Wakanda should even be out in the world
05:28The less people know about Wakanda the better
05:30From their perspective
05:31Which is becoming more and more challenging in this day and age
05:34If the world ever were to find out what they have both in the natural resources and technology
05:39All of a sudden they're going to be under the spotlight
05:41And then what happens?
05:43Then how do you rule that nation?
05:45For hundreds of years now we've been living outside of the popular society
05:50But now Wakanda is potentially going to succumb to our globalization
05:55And reach out to the outside world
05:58Hey yo
05:58This yours?
06:02The story is very relevant
06:04We need a greater understanding about each other
06:07We need to bring some life back to the differences in our cultures
06:13Because we all really do live here and we all live here together
06:19I think what will separate it is the fact that it's a story embracing African culture
06:24And it's a different place for the Marvel audiences to go and to see
06:29It's exploring people from Africa
06:32And a superhero from Africa
06:36Wakanda is something to aspire to
06:38In a sense it's what we could be
06:41Maybe should be
06:43And maybe may become
06:44Wakanda forever!
06:49I'm engraving.
06:50I've had a chance of
06:51Japana forever!
06:51We have five years now
06:51We have this time
06:52To be safe
06:52Every once in the coming
06:56People are safe
06:56Live everyday
06:56I think we must want
06:57To be safe
06:57But I think we can
