Some journeys begin with ambition, but the extraordinary ones begin with purpose. For Soumitra Dutta, that purpose emerged early, a belief that technology could do more than connect machines, it could uplift humanity. Growing up in India, his world was shaped by curiosity and quiet determination.
At IIT Delhi, he learned that ideas, when pursued boldly, can become forces of transformation. That belief carried him across the globe, to UC Berkeley, where he earned his PhD. A chapter at General Electric strengthened his grounding in industry, but destiny had larger plans.
In 1989, he arrived at INSEAD, where for over 20 years he shaped leaders, built programs, and reimagined what global business education could be. He helped create two powerful global measures, the Network Readiness Index and the Global Innovation Index. In 2008, he stepped into entrepreneurship, founding Fisheye Analytics to explore how data, perception, and society intertwine.
Then came Cornell University, first as dean of the Johnson School, and later, the founding dean of the S.C. Johnson College of Business. There, he helped launch Cornell Tech and brought business education into the era of digital transformation. And on June 1, 2022, a new milestone, dean of SED Business School at the University of Oxford.
A role that honors his past and amplifies his vision for the future. From New Delhi to Oxford, Soumitra Dutta's journey is a testament to one truth, when innovation is shaped by intention, leadership becomes a lifetime of impact.
