00:17It's mad to think that the mosque is under the water.
00:19I had the exact same thought. I spent too much time with you.
00:24I love it.
00:27After a 4,500km race through Europe to the south-east of Turquia,
00:33now just four teams remain.
00:37Last, like, back in mind, we were, like, elimination, elimination,
00:39so it's nice for her to go forward and not have to worry.
00:42When I just thought it wasn't us last, it was just...
00:44To be honest, it's just pure, really.
00:46That's the thing, even Pooze and Ross, like... Yeah.
00:48It's just heartbreaking seeing them go. Yeah, it really does show.
00:51Anything can happen.
00:54Siblings Katie and Harrison are in front for the third time,
00:58but their lead has diminished to under ten hours.
01:01After opening that book and seeing Harrison face first,
01:04their time was a surprise. Now they're only half the day ahead.
01:06Maybe they'll take their foot off the gas a little bit.
01:08We've got through the elimination, and now that's out of the way,
01:11our new goal is getting to Mongolia and getting that first place.
01:14I do think we are slowly creeping up on... Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:17..now we've got first in our head. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:19It's not gone be last, it's be first.
01:21Well, we started fourth, and then we came third.
01:24Now we're second.
01:25So there's only one place to go.
01:26We've got to go to number one spot.
01:28Myself and Mark, we are so lined up ready.
01:31Sorry, guys. We've got all our ducks in a row.
01:33Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:34We all want to be first, don't we?
01:36Someone will have to displace Katie and Harrison.
01:38What do you mean someone?
01:39Someone. Us two. Us two.
01:43As three teams wait to depart...
01:47Right, shall we get going?
01:49..first to set off, race leaders Katie and Harrison.
01:54This is for you.
01:54Perfect, thank you so much.
01:57Shall we see where we're going?
02:00Yes, I don't know how to say it, but it's where I want it to go.
02:03It's Georgia.
02:04I was, I so wanted to go there.
02:05Yeah. I'm so happy.
02:07Thank you very much.
02:07Cheers, thank you.
02:08Cheers, thank you.
02:09Oh, it's so good.
02:11New country, about to be unlocked.
02:18God, there is nothing here.
02:20Yeah.
02:21It's dead.
02:22Yeah.
02:23But at nearly midnight, the progress stalls immediately.
02:28We're not getting out tonight,
02:30unless you're going to spend ridiculous money on a taxi.
02:33Nope.
02:34We're off to a bad start.
02:37Do you have a room for two people for tonight?
02:40Yeah.
02:44Race starts tomorrow.
03:00New day, new chapter of the race.
03:02Yeah.
03:02Let's hit it.
03:05Not getting out of our party last night means we no longer have a ten hour lead.
03:09I think as long as we keep them in relative touching distance, I'll be happy enough.
03:13I'm actually well bothered to go in Georgia.
03:15Why did you want to go?
03:16It's just a bit rogue, isn't it?
03:19A 1,700-kilometre journey to Georgia's capital, the fourth checkpoint, Tbilisi.
03:27Meaning warm place.
03:30Legend has it that King Vaktang Gorgasali founded the city after his falcon fell into a hot spring, revealing the
03:40area's natural thermal waters.
03:42Today, those sulphur baths still steam, set against a backdrop of modern, futuristic architecture.
03:53Uh, Shan...
03:54Shan...
03:54Shanlorfa?
03:55Okay.
03:55We got, yeah?
03:56Let's have it.
03:58Finally on the road, Katie and Harrison are heading to the closest transport hub, Shanlorfa.
04:05Shall we have a look at the map and see where we're going and what we've got to do?
04:08We could go all the way to the edge of Turkey and then up.
04:13Nothing's there.
04:14Yeah.
04:15Or we could go straight up from where we are to the coast.
04:19To reach Tbilisi, teams may choose to hug the Black Sea coast, a popular route for domestic tourists, but the
04:28winding coastal roads could slow progress.
04:31Or they could opt to stay inland, striking a direct route through Turkey's arid heartland.
04:39Rich in Kurdish culture, but with fewer connections.
04:44Both routes converge at the Georgian border as they navigate new terrain towards the capital.
04:52I feel like along the Black Sea you can see a lot more transport routes.
04:57Samsung looks like a pretty big city.
04:59Yeah.
04:59It would be great to do some homestays.
05:01It'd be good to actually, like, integrate the local people a bit more.
05:06We haven't spent too much time with the locals so far.
05:10I am looking forward to it.
05:12I'm obviously nervous, you know, it's not a natural thing, but I do think we'll get most out of it.
05:17I'm really excited.
05:19Homestays scare me.
05:20It's just a bit awkward.
05:22But it's something we need to do in terms of, like, putting me out of my comfort zone.
05:26Yeah.
05:26And maybe, like, I'll enjoy it.
05:29Planning to sample their first homestay of the race, the siblings aim to head north towards the well-connected coast.
05:37Samsung.
05:38Two.
05:39Brilliant.
05:41We booked an overnight bus tonight, travelling the whole length of Turkey in one night.
05:47And then we can get straight to our homestay tomorrow.
05:50But there's nothing we can do until then.
05:53So, yeah.
05:54We just have to wait here most of the day.
06:02It's bringing a step today, Mark.
06:04Next, to leave Halfeti.
06:06The elimination's out of the way.
06:08The shackles are off.
06:10Hypnotherapist, Margo, and her brother-in-law, Mark.
06:13We need to get all the way across northeast of Turkey.
06:17The direct route north up towards the Black Sea coast is probably going to be better connected and faster.
06:22I do fancy that route.
06:25I think going east is my preferred option.
06:29And I'd like to see a little bit of more rural Turkey heading towards Van.
06:35You know, we used to have two Van cats, Arnie and Keeps.
06:38Beautiful and cuddly, with odd eyes, very unique cats.
06:43Seeing that Van is here, I'd like to go see where they came from.
06:49No, I like the sound of that.
06:51Yeah.
06:51I do like the sound of that.
06:53He's kind of bewitched me with talk of Van.
06:56I think he's hypnotised me a bit to want to go there.
06:59Because I just went, yes, I'd like to go there.
07:02An adventure.
07:03It's an adventure.
07:04It is an adventure.
07:05Into the unknown.
07:06We've got it in us to catch up with Katie and Harrison.
07:09Whether it's a good move or not in the race, we are heading to Van.
07:13Let's do it. Let's go.
07:14Let's go.
07:14Mark's feline-friendly plan, make a 660km punt east to Lake Van.
07:21Do you think we can catch Katie and Harrison and do this route at the same time?
07:25I've got a good feeling about it, a really good feeling about it.
07:29Straight to the bus station.
07:31Yeah.
07:32Just 38 minutes behind.
07:33We did really good last leg.
07:35Yeah.
07:36Best friends Joe and Kush.
07:38It's like, kind of moving away from not carrying out the budget to start to bump it up again.
07:43So honestly, any work we can get our hands on, we can do.
07:46Yeah.
07:48After spending big to stay in the race, the boys are beginning the leg with nearly 10% less than
07:53their competitors.
07:54Last leg, we did everything to not be eliminated and not included.
07:58A pretty hefty taxi.
07:59Now we've got budget concerns, so we need to make money.
08:03Do we need to find the city busy, please?
08:05Yeah.
08:05We just need to get on the bus first.
08:09People that are behind us are going to catch up with us, so I expect the boys to appear any
08:13minute.
08:14All concertina together.
08:15Yeah.
08:16Here are the boys.
08:17How are you?
08:18How are you?
08:19Good, how are you?
08:20You look well rested.
08:21Do you know where you're going now?
08:22Yeah.
08:23Have you got a plan?
08:24Yeah.
08:25We have a plan, yeah.
08:26Are we allowed to know where you're heading to?
08:27I don't know.
08:29I don't know.
08:31I don't know.
08:31We're heading to VAM to see the test.
08:32We're going to VAM.
08:34They're trying to problem.
08:35They're trying to get information out.
08:37Yeah.
08:38Margot's job is to read people.
08:39They're going to copy our strategy, our planning, so we're going to have to keep more hush.
08:44I think the boys are on fire, though.
08:47They've got something to prove to themselves.
08:49To get first place.
08:50I think they'd love to get first place.
08:52Yeah.
08:52The boys are being very shady about where they're going.
08:55Very, like, and I think they're going to race as if their life depends upon it.
09:02See you, boys.
09:03We'll see you guys soon.
09:04Take care.
09:04We might have to up our game.
09:06See you, boys.
09:07Good luck.
09:10Will you sit down here?
09:11We can look at the map, all right?
09:12Aye.
09:12Will do.
09:12OK.
09:14Woo-hoo!
09:15Last to depart.
09:16I think the obvious route at the moment is to go up and across northern Turkey.
09:21Andrew and his daughter Molly.
09:23And we could go and see the gods on Mount Nemro.
09:26But I'd like to kind of meet more people, learn about their culture.
09:29That's what I wanted to do on this trip.
09:32But we had a beautiful time at Mount Olympus.
09:34And maybe the gods have looked on us.
09:36And maybe we need to go and kind of thank the gods for allowing us to get through to the
09:39next stage.
09:40But I don't want to take over here.
09:43Yeah, I know.
09:43All right.
09:44What do you think?
09:47It would be amazing.
09:48I'm telling you.
09:48I love it.
09:49OK.
09:50I'm excited.
09:51I know you're excited.
09:52I know.
09:54A bit annoyed in the route we've taken.
09:57The whole point of this trip is taking on culture, seeing people.
10:01But he's so excited.
10:02So I've had to say yes.
10:05Feeling the pull of a summit once again, Andrew plots a course for Mount Nemrut, just three hours drive away,
10:12before heading inland through eastern Turkey.
10:15Yeah.
10:16Molly, I'm thinking eastern Turkey.
10:18Yeah.
10:18But it's all very direct, going to Georgia.
10:20So this might actually pay off and get us back in the race.
10:24I'm confident that it's going to be a good route to see what we want to see.
10:27But also quick enough routes, because we need to move up the table a bit.
10:30So it's rather than being fort.
10:31If we can get an experience and a bit of speed as well, what more can we ask?
10:39So look.
10:40Mardine.
10:41Yes.
10:42Where are you from?
10:43England.
10:44England.
10:45England.
10:45England.
10:46Yeah.
10:47Your name?
10:48France.
10:49France.
10:49Also heading east.
10:53Joe and Kush have answered an ad in the jobs directory, and are on their way to the city of
10:58Mardin.
10:59We've got our work sorted, but I think we should start speaking to people about accommodation.
11:06Yo, how are you?
11:08Do you know any very cheap hotel or hostel in Mardin?
11:14Yes.
11:18You can stay with him.
11:24In Mardin?
11:26Yeah.
11:26Yeah.
11:28Bro.
11:29Bro.
11:30Bro said we could stay at his house.
11:32What?
11:33It's the Scouse charm, I tell you.
11:34It's the smell.
11:36Nowhere to stay.
11:37People have gone out of their way to give.
11:38We're not tourists here.
11:40We feel like guests.
11:41We've got free accommodation.
11:42So we're making money.
11:44We are going to get first, please.
11:49The only team heading to the coast...
11:52Is this the longest motor transport we've done so far?
11:54Yes.
11:55Katie and Harrison are still waiting for their 14-hour overnight bus.
12:00Before I go on the bus, I really need to moisturise my elbows.
12:05Wash my face now before I go on there.
12:07Maybe brush my teeth before I go on there.
12:09And then I'm going to put some leggings on so that I can properly relax and get comfortable if it
12:15gets cold as well.
12:16I'm going to plait my hair so it doesn't get knotty.
12:20Yeah.
12:20This is my bag?
12:21Yeah.
12:25Blanket.
12:25Well, you're disgusting, aren't you?
12:27Sorted.
12:28You need to take better care of yourself, you scruff.
12:30Sorted.
12:30No wonder you don't get any women since you're minger.
12:35Look at this bus.
12:36Looks class.
12:37Looks nice, doesn't it?
12:38Yeah, class.
12:40Better.
12:41I agree.
12:42Better, indeed.
12:43I've got my eye mask.
12:45I've got my pink hair pub.
12:47Goodnight.
12:52That's a view.
12:54Godday!
12:56Just 20 kilometres from the Syrian border...
13:01Marden's stone houses cling to the hillside, overlooking the vast Mesopotamian plain.
13:07Oh, thank you.
13:09The boys have arranged to stay with new friend Furat and his family.
13:13Your name?
13:14Baba.
13:15Baba?
13:16John.
13:17I'm dead.
13:18Dead?
13:18Dead.
13:19Oh, father.
13:21I can't lie, I didn't expect any of this.
13:23Start a conversation on this bus.
13:25Next minute, we're in his house.
13:28Woo!
13:28Oh!
13:29Oh!
13:30Merhaba!
13:31It's a big thing inviting strangers to your house.
13:33What's this?
13:34Yolk.
13:35It's yoghurt.
13:36Pinier.
13:37Juice?
13:37Yes.
13:39Egg.
13:40Good.
13:40Oh, maybe I'll begin now.
13:42Whatever.
13:42Wow.
13:43Good.
13:44Nice.
13:45Don't be shy.
13:47Eat until you're full.
13:48He knows.
13:49He knows.
13:52He's been very kind to us.
13:53We've just had dinner with him.
13:55He's let us have a shower.
13:56He's laid these beds out for us.
13:59That does mean a lot.
14:01Free food, accommodation.
14:02We're trying to take every opportunity we can get to save money.
14:14Quarter to six in the morning.
14:16Nice time to be out.
14:18You're alone in your thoughts.
14:20Stunning, isn't it?
14:21It's like the stairway to heaven.
14:23Well, look at the colour there.
14:24It is fab.
14:25Isn't it?
14:28High in the Taurus Mountains, Andrew and Molly have reached Mount Nemrut.
14:35Look at that.
14:36That is amazing.
14:37Wow.
14:38Beautiful, isn't it?
14:38That's exceptional.
14:39Impressive.
14:43Here, ten metres stone gods stand vigil.
14:47Built more than 2,000 years ago by King Antiochus I.
14:52Believing himself divine, he demanded a tomb among the gods.
14:56A monument that still gazes out across Comagene,
15:00the ancient kingdom he once ruled.
15:03They're cool.
15:05Daddy, look at them.
15:06Where's he gone?
15:08That just sums us up.
15:10I'm looking at the human geography and he's looking at the physical geography.
15:13Molly.
15:14Come here, look.
15:15Come here.
15:16You can really see the crater rim.
15:19Yeah.
15:20As it makes its whole way around.
15:22But that's what created all those lakes.
15:24Locked out.
15:26Because it doesn't seem to be any rivers or anything,
15:28but you can see obviously the lakes have all been blocked.
15:30Daddy.
15:32Do you know what?
15:32I do love a hike and I do love a pretty sky.
15:36And I'll make the most of it when I'm here,
15:37but I also just love a bit of crack.
15:40I do think at the moment that we're missing talking to people,
15:44chat with people, dancing with people.
15:47I just, I love meeting people.
15:48Uh-huh.
15:49During this trip I'd love to kind of see like, I don't know, a bit of life, yeah, a bit
15:54of party.
15:55I know.
15:56But I love, you know, I love getting up in the morning.
15:58A bit of solitude, a bit of quiet time, just to see the sun rising.
16:01This is right up my street.
16:05Look at the clouds.
16:06That is crazy.
16:07The clouds are just stunning.
16:10For me, the race is about proving to Daddy that I am capable.
16:15Yeah, I'm a junior doctor, but Daddy's very much top dog
16:18and he'd be the main influencer on the trip.
16:20And like, there's no pretending that kind of daddy-daughter dynamic.
16:25Like that doesn't matter.
16:26But I think we do need to break this default of like,
16:30everything Daddy says is 100% perfect and correct
16:33and what I say is maybe not fully trustable.
16:37There's the sun now.
16:38Yeah.
16:39Here she comes.
16:40It's beautiful.
16:41I would love for Daddy to get what he wants out of this race,
16:44but I would also very much like him to know that my opinion
16:48is also very much there to be respected.
16:52Wow.
16:55And that was amazing.
16:57Did you get your fix?
16:58I did.
17:00There's a visitor centre down at the bottom,
17:02so might be able to have a look through that.
17:04I think we need to move on.
17:07Yo, Bob Jones, work, yo!
17:11Me in an open hoovering,
17:13doing chores to earn a keep.
17:16Sing while I work like a Scouse smurf.
17:20Also in south-east Anatolia.
17:23So much dust.
17:25Joe and Kush press ahead with their budget-building mission,
17:29cleaning rooms at a hotel in Marden.
17:31Look at that, lad.
17:32That view.
17:33That's Syria.
17:35I wouldn't have guessed that.
17:37Two, two, three!
17:39Bah!
17:39900 kilometres north-west...
17:41The drive has been pretty stunning, hasn't it?
17:44Very stunning.
17:45On the left of us, the Black Sea.
17:47On the right, there's been, like, these huge green mountains.
17:52Joining the coastal highway, Katie and Harrison are approaching Samson.
17:58So excited.
17:59It's a vanilla cake as well.
18:02Check, John.
18:03The other Turkish box.
18:06You and your revolving doors.
18:08I love revolving doors.
18:09I know you do.
18:10Mark and Margot have made it to Van,
18:13and are now the team closest to the checkpoint.
18:17Ardahan.
18:18Ardahan.
18:18And from Ardahan, I think that would give us a crossing across the border.
18:22Yeah.
18:228.45 tomorrow.
18:241400 each.
18:252,800.
18:26It's just nice to have this sorted, though, isn't it, Mark?
18:29Yeah.
18:30Cheers, thank you.
18:31Seeing as we've done it now, we're here.
18:33There's no bus till tomorrow.
18:35Perhaps we could see if there's anything lively happening.
18:45Look at that!
18:48My cat looked similar to that.
18:49They said it was orange and white.
18:52Native to the shores of Turquia's largest lake,
18:56van cats are famed for their striking eyes,
18:59their water-resistant fur,
19:01and an unusual love of swimming.
19:05This is Lake Van.
19:07That's it.
19:08It's huge, isn't it?
19:09You want a Turkish van cat inside?
19:12We haven't seen one, have we?
19:13No.
19:13Oh!
19:14Is that a cat over there?
19:15Isn't that woman's arms?
19:17Yeah, it's a baby, I think.
19:19Oh, it's a baby.
19:19There was a cat!
19:20Ha ha ha!
19:21Ha ha ha ha!
19:25In northern Turquia, near the Black Sea...
19:28Merhaba, Harrison!
19:29Merhaba!
19:29Merhaba, eh, dat?
19:30Esad.
19:31Ah, that?
19:31Katie.
19:32Katie!

23:23He's made that hilarious.
23:25I came into this just as apprehensive of you,
23:27but, like, putting a brave face on.
23:30And I absolutely loved every second of it.
23:32I'm beaming. That was...that was beautiful.
23:35My heart is full. My heart is warm.
23:37I didn't know that was my favourite moment on the race somehow.
23:41OK.
23:42Ah!
23:48Oh, OK.
23:54Shall we try and find a bar round here?
23:56Yes.
23:56A bit of action.
23:59Some dancing, some music. Some dancing, yeah.
24:00At least some music to listen to.
24:02Booked on a bus to the border tomorrow...
24:05There's a pair of lights.
24:06Oh! Look at that place up there.
24:08A chance for Mark and Margot to sample Van's nightlife.
24:12Oh, this looks like a good choice, Mark.
24:18Oh, my God, it's magical.
24:20There's some music. This is fantastic.
24:25What is the music? What style of music will it be tonight?
24:29Folk music. Folk music? Yeah.
24:31Is it Kurdish folk music? Yeah, Kurdish.
24:33Cheers, Morgan. To a good day.
24:35To a very good day, yes.
24:40Kurdish folk music carries the story of a people, the resilience, identity and history across the Middle East.
24:48Oh, my God.
24:54Oh, my God.
24:58Oh, my God.
24:59Oh, my God.
25:01Oh, my God.
25:01Oh, my God.
25:01Oh, my God.
25:02Oh, my God.
25:02Yay.
25:04Appreciate it.
25:05Love it.
25:06Yeah.
25:07Fantastic, isn't it?
25:08I love it, too.
25:09What's your name?
25:10Aisha.
25:10Aisha? Oh, I like this.
25:11Very appreciative.
25:12I'm Margot.
25:13Really? Nice to meet you.
25:15You're so sweet.
25:18Can I sit a second, yes?
25:20How old are you?
25:22I am 59.
25:23Like a grandma.
25:25Wow.
25:25No.
25:27You're not a grandma.
25:29I'm 19 years old also.
25:3119?
25:31Yes.
25:32I like to come with the young people just because it's nice, isn't it?
25:34Yes.
25:35I have two children.
25:36My daughter is 17.
25:3717?
25:38And my son is 20.
25:3920.
25:40Wow.
25:40I have six siblings.
25:42Three girls, three boys.
25:44Wow.
25:45I have four brothers.
25:47Four brothers?
25:47And four sisters.
25:48One more each of you.
25:50One more each.
25:52So it's nine.
25:52You're a really Kurdish family.
25:54You have a Kurdish family.
25:55I have a Kurdish family, yes.
25:57Oh.
26:00And so are you.
26:01You're a beautiful young woman.
26:03Thank you so much.
26:05Tonight we found somewhere really special and it was quite unexpected.
26:09And I met this gorgeous group of young women.
26:11And they're so proud of their culture.
26:14And it just felt so warm and so, oh, vibrant.
26:19Are you lonely, Mark?
26:21No.
26:21Enjoying yourself.
26:22I've got some new friends.
26:24Hi.
26:25You look so younger.
26:27I told them you're 66.
26:30Whoa.
26:30That's amazing.
26:32I really want this to be a trip for Mark.
26:35But I think I might have missed some places on the way that I would have liked to have stopped
26:38and seen and I've realised that it's about balance really.
26:41You love the atmosphere here, don't you?
26:43Absolutely.
26:44Absolutely beautiful.
26:46And, you know, I'd like to do some things that I would really, really, really passionately enjoy
26:50that light me up.
26:53I like to meet people.
26:54I like to talk with people.
26:56I like to laugh with people.
26:57And I'm hoping we'll prioritise that in the coming weeks.
27:12We're literally going across half of Turkey.
27:16Speeding along the coastal highway towards Hoppe.
27:20Hello.
27:21Do you speak English?
27:22I am, yes.
27:23Can we come and stay with you tonight?
27:26My house?
27:27Yes, your house.
27:28Yes, OK.
27:29Following the success of their first homestay, the siblings are setting up another.
27:34Perfect.
27:34Thank you very much.
27:36Are you laughing at her?
27:37Hello.
27:38Do you speak English a little?
27:40Can we stay with you tonight?
27:45We need to go to the Ottergar.
27:46Ottergar?
27:47The bus station in Tadfan.
27:49In south-east Turkey, continuing their journey from Mount Nemrut, Andrew and Molly still
27:55have 550 kilometres to reach Georgia.
27:58Yeah.
27:58We need to go much faster than this.
28:01I know.
28:01I know.
28:02Plan A.
28:03Yeah.
28:03Is get as close as we can tonight to the border.
28:07Because as soon as anything to even get across the border, you should be able to get a bus to
28:10the BC quite quickly.
28:12All right, kid?
28:12Plan.
28:16We should be in Georgia by tonight.
28:18What do you reckon?
28:19Hopefully, yes.
28:19You should be, yes.
28:21Already closing in on the crossing, Mark and Margot.
28:25Snip, snip, snip.
28:26I'm going to cut your map.
28:27No, we're not cutting my map.
28:28I think we should cut the map and just leave the bits that we need.
28:31If the map is badly folded, it's no reflection on you as the person, Mark.
28:35Wow.
28:36Close behind.
28:37It's so beautiful.
28:38Beautiful.
28:39Fresh off an overnight bus, Joe and Kush have stopped just short of the border in Susus.
28:45Look at this, bro.
28:47Wow.
28:48How are you doing this?
28:49This is...
28:49Oh, this is sick.
28:52What's this for my meal?
28:53It's like grandma's house.
28:54Turkish grandma's house?
28:56Protecting their budget once again, they're staying with Adil and his wife, Beren, helping
29:01to care for their flock of over 100 free-range geese.
29:05We come from...
29:08Liverpool.
29:09Liverpool, football, match.
29:10Football, good.
29:10Yeah, football.
29:11Mo Salah?
29:13Mo Salah.
29:13Mo Salah, huh?
29:15Here are the geese.
29:16What?
29:25There's a mini-stump to you then.
29:27Oh, yeah.
29:30Raised on open pasture, the region's cool climate creates the ideal environment for the
29:35environment to rear the birds.
29:37Look, look.
29:39Look.
29:40Prized across Turkey for their high nutritional value and succulent texture.
29:45Yeah?
29:46It is quite a change coming to the east side of Turkey.
29:51When I think of Turkey, you think, like, our holiday destination.
29:56Busy people.
29:57Very touristy place.
29:58But I don't think we expected this whole experience.
30:00There's two kids out there.
30:02Like, there was birds that were doing flips.
30:05That's mad.
30:06I wish our pigeons did this.
30:08Like, this isn't the type of thing you'd see in Liverpool, you know?
30:11I think this is the geese shit.
30:13There's some things in life that have to be done.
30:16Yeah?
30:17Me and Jarry, we're happy to do it.
30:18What do they need us to do?
30:20We came here for work and, in return, a bed.
30:24This pretty much sums up our plan on this leg to save money.
30:29I swear some of these are trying to square up.
30:34I definitely could put this on my CV.
30:36I shoveled bird poop.
30:38One of the jobs we've done.
30:39Hotel.
30:41Hospitality.
30:42Waiters.
30:43Geese.
30:44Yeah.
30:44My CV's going to be so thick.
30:47We have both finished our educations.
30:50We've got our grades.
30:51And now it's a case of whether we want to work or university,
30:56apprenticeships, anything.
30:57And this is the perfect opportunity to think about the future.
31:00This is sick coming to the middle of nowhere.
31:04Nah, this is heavy, this.
31:06I hope this experience will broaden my vision
31:10and open my eyes, see what I may want to do,
31:14but also discover what I maybe don't want to do.
31:19Joe, which is heavier?
31:20A kilogram of geese shit or a kilogram of chicken shit?
31:24They're both a kilogram.
31:25What do you mean?
31:27Oh, a trick question.
31:29What are you?
31:30We are both going to experience so many different cultures,
31:34different kinds of people, different attitudes to life.
31:37I just clocked it.
31:38We're taking the geese for a walk.
31:40Oh, we actually are taking the geese for a walk.
31:42This race, it's a lifetime of exploring in such a short amount of time.
31:46I think it's going to open up a lot of doors that not many people have the privilege to unlock.
31:54That is adorable.
31:59I was supposed to get him back.
32:05This is Hopper. Fantastic.
32:08At the eastern edge of the Black Sea shoreline, Katie and Harrison have arrived in Hopper,
32:14where they've arranged a homestay at a nearby tea farm.
32:17But first...
32:19Let's go.
32:20Let's go.
32:20They look to book onward transport towards the checkpoint for tomorrow.
32:24Tbilisi.
32:25Yeah.
32:26With bus.
32:27Tomorrow.
32:28No buses.
32:30Tomorrow.
32:31No buses.
32:32No.
32:32No bus.
32:33Tomorrow.
32:34No.
32:40We're just going to have to wait till the day after.
32:42Yeah, yeah.
32:43They do.
32:45Can we book not tomorrow, but the morning after?
32:49OK.
32:49That's it.
32:54With no choice but to stay in Hopper for two nights, the risk falling a full day behind
33:00in the race...
33:01It's not ideal.
33:02It's insane.
33:04rubbish it's pretty terrible it's okay it's not okay the transports not the
33:10best in the world for timings so we're just stuck and feel helpless and there's
33:17nothing we can really do about that maybe on the teens are finding just as
33:20hard as well or at least that's what I'm telling myself
33:25kama kama don't kama kama throw myself in the black sea
33:34we are going to Tbilisi what's the best way to get to Tbilisi cars cars how do we
33:40get to cars okay perfect thank you trailing behind Andrew and Molly have
33:46reached the transport hub of Tatban we're trying to go to cars tonight no was no
33:53bus is there anywhere else around here no no buses up anywhere tonight no nobody
34:00seems to run buses at nighttime how can we get to Tbilisi yes yeah yes it's not
34:07that can we get a bus can we get a train can we get a bike tomorrow bus yes when
34:15is that bus 8 30 at 8 30 in the morning yeah thank you
34:20Molly take your bike we're a bit stuck there seems to be no buses tonight but
34:27there is a bus to Ezerum tomorrow morning
34:29why is there no buses Molly I can't answer that question Petal
34:34if we are in Ezerum tomorrow okay would we get a bus from Ezerum to Tbilisi every
34:40hours you can go into Tbilisi daddy he's speaking through him he's not giving us
34:46independent information I'm just I'm a bit frustrated at the minute because daddy is
34:58not listening to me at all and he's telling me to shush which is really
35:01annoying me so it's okay but at the same time I'm always dirty myself so I don't
35:10know so what do you want to do I don't know I don't I don't know I'm not really
35:17sure what to do I actually have no gut instinct it's a bit annoying I normally
35:21have something telling me so I'm kind of thinking a full day behind is what we're
35:27looking at if we stay tonight it's a choice between budget and getting there we
35:32could pay 7,000 for a taxi or 2,400 get a hotel here I think I'm just tired and
35:39I
35:39I really mean that I just think what do we need more at this moment in time pet a bed
35:48a bit of tension tonight between the two of us daddy just kept telling me to shh and I find
35:53it really
35:53difficult when you are just as good at getting information but you're kind of
35:58putting the back burner so I was struggling and it got a wee bit tense for a moment stress levels
36:04are up
36:07oh jeez oh I've never felt a tire in my life
36:22good breakfast man we could definitely get to checkpoint today you know we could actually be
36:26fighting for first I do now we moved fast too I think that we've got a very good chance
36:34we've got to get straight back into race moments we've got to get straight back into the game
36:39hopefully we're going to be a couple hours ahead from the other teams fingers crossed we've kept
36:43moving we've had good transport connections so far touch wood let's go we're going to pos off
36:48they're direct to Tbilisi getting the first bus the second bus and check point
36:53boom boom the boys plan take a minibus to pos off and cross the border already on Georgian soil Mark
37:03and Margo
37:08Mark let me in but just 200 kilometers shy of the checkpoint the progress is put on hold
37:16how are you feeling I'm not for you to be in a muslim head no okay you're the priority even
37:21if we lose
37:22like you know hours exactly no there's no point in me sitting in the hotel while ill is that so
37:27you're
37:27going out yeah I've got to get out and experience this place do you want to take the money with
37:31you
37:32yes I might feel better later so I draw these curtains for you let you have a little more rest
37:38all right
37:39take care came here mainly Alcatsuki for Mark but now it's gonna be Margo's day I am sorry Mark's sick
37:51disappointing in race terms and I do fear we're gonna be trailing in fourth place not a lot we can
37:57do about it so I'm not gonna get upset about it I'm just gonna go eat some dumplings and drink
38:01some wine
38:02because if you can't do anything about it you've just got to live your best life absolutely gorgeous
38:07this castle looks amazing in a valley surrounded by the Muschietti mountains Akatsuki watching over
38:16the city the 1,100 year old fortress its walls sheltering a mosque church and a synagogue the castle
38:26called Akatsuki which means Newcastle Newcastle in Georgia look at this mark would just be beyond
38:35himself with boy scouted excitement if he was here I'm feeling pretty ropey this morning I had TT
38:44troubles all night tummy trouble so I haven't slept at all it is frustrating I would have loved to get
38:50to Tbilisi this evening I don't think that's going to happen but we wait and see if I can recover
39:00oh that's nice I like this one I like that one I think this is my favorite okay I said
39:08I'll finish
39:08these off yeah yeah okay thank you Georgian wine tasting we've got going here I'm not really sure
39:16Mark would be pleased that I'm spending money on wine but I hope he'll be okay with this he'll be
39:22glad that
39:22I'm happy anyway so um oh no now I'm getting guilt I don't know what he's gonna say when I
39:32get back
39:32amazing these are huge hmm homemade cognac cheers I could drink a lot more of that the truth is out
39:45ten
39:46pounds so that is an absolute steal I think I have done fabulously part of coming on the race was
39:58like
39:58running away from real life and just enjoying myself and just be me for a change and just go let
40:04rip you
40:05know I love doing different things I love doing new things all the time and experiences and excitement
40:12when I have my children it was like no you have to kind of you know you've got this work
40:16to be done
40:16it can be joyful work but it's a slog I never planned to have the life I had I never
40:23planned to be a mum
40:24and settle into suburban lifestyle and it kind of it kind of happened but um the chance to do this
40:34is like
40:34to step back into that time of mischief in my real life there's just so many different pulls on my
40:43time
40:43and responsibilities but here they're gone
40:58tea it's tea okay yeah doesn't look anything like it does in a teabag
41:05190 kilometers west still in Turquia Katie and Harrison are repaying their bed and board
41:15by helping farmer Harun with his family business
41:20very nice nice nice nice so this is all your tea tea your brother tea brother brother tea yeah
41:29me tea tea is that tea up there cousin cousin cousin cousin beautiful car everybody cousin then you sell
41:38ha ha ha business yeah money okay yeah okay very good very good this is a pretty special landscape it's
41:49probably the most breathtaking like landscape I've ever seen
41:56Hopper's lush forested mountains lie within Turquia's prime tea growing region along the eastern Black Sea coast
42:06introduced in 1918 by botanist Ali Riza air 10 tea has since become central to the local economy
42:16I've always wanted to see places like this I know a lot of my friends have gone to see tea
42:22farms
42:23I bet I think I was a bit gutted when I didn't get to go traveling the year after sixth
42:30form
42:30did you really want to go yeah God yeah oh why didn't you go I think mom was at her
42:39worst then I just couldn't leave mom for extended period of time yeah just wouldn't have wanted to go just
42:48in case anything bad happened yeah I'd want to be around
42:53yeah I'm seeing a lot better now but I think we've cared for mom for the last 10 years on
42:59and off it's
43:00interesting like the phrase cared for mom because doesn't everyone care for their mom but maybe we did
43:06it a little bit more intensely washing cooking on the really bad days it would be like helping dresser
43:13and things like that really I think it was a time of a lot of hospital visits visits yeah appointments
43:21emergency
43:22visits so yeah mom became ill and it was after the separation with dad it started with the
43:33fibromyalgia yeah chronic fatigue slipped disc in her back the last two years there is nothing you can do
43:41if she's screaming out in pain and there's nothing you do apart from hold her hand
43:46I remember you felt like a pressure to push the doctor keep asking questions about but what can we do
43:53like like in 1890 I'm not the most confident now I definitely wasn't there and I just I just couldn't
44:01the bit that took a toll on me was just constantly seeing her in pain
44:07like that just broke me like and knowing there's just nothing you can do and nothing no one else can
44:15do but just sit there and watch her in so much pain
44:20probably the emotional side of it took more of a toll on you yeah my use was more practical maybe
44:29I think I actually took a more emotional like emotional responsibility despite me being younger yeah yeah because
44:39that's what you were good at yeah or better out than me
44:48I have a slight feeling of guilt towards how much Katie cared for mom looking back what I wanted to
44:57do at that point was spend all every hour on the day on my xbox or
45:01or or with my mates playing football so I think I would be a little bit selfish in terms of
45:06prioritize what I want to do
45:08but then when you hear about how much Katie took on from that then maybe I feel a little bit
45:12more
45:12guilty in the fact that I didn't take as much as the emotional weight as Katie did
45:19I think I would have liked to have talked to her some more about the emotional side
45:28because I think that took a big toll on me growing up and to be able to talk to him
45:34about that would have
45:35been nice just to be able to share that and not like have it by myself so maybe that's a
45:43good place to start
45:44whilst we're racing take a cup of tea yeah lower cup of tea
45:53bus station bus station yes yes let's get going
46:00fingers crossed we can get on a coach and get to checkpoint tonight you will make it mark oh I
46:07don't know
46:08hope we do with mark back on his feet the in-laws restart their push to the checkpoint
46:16looks all closed up doesn't it please easy 6 20 in the morning so there's nothing to be easy till
46:24tomorrow hmm so we could go to bed now get up tomorrow and get that bus or how much would
46:31a cab cost no
46:32idea at all but it's how much would it you know a bed for the night costs we'd save it
46:36on a bed wouldn't
46:37me yeah if it's gonna cost it's a balancing out activity how much is a taxi to Tbilisi 200 200
46:44larry

47:14have made it to Erzurum and they're still looking for a bus to the checkpoint go direct Tbilisi if we
47:20can
47:20direct you know first between hoppa hoppa hoppa to the Tbilisi direct what time will we arrive five
47:27hours later you are arrived to hoppa it's five hours away five hours and then after the hoppa seven
47:34o'clock at night good choice Molly thank you cheers I'm a bit nervous we originally planned to go through
47:43the middle of Turkey um avoiding the coastal route but what's actually happened is we've ended up doing
47:48coastal route a bit backwards and probably a bit our sways knowing that we've had to go all over
47:53the place but it is what it is with no direct bus to Tbilisi they've booked a 240 kilometer detour
48:01via the coastal town of hoppa I don't know I'm not sure if this is a good decision what do
48:09you think
48:09I think that is to ask hello could you help me is hoppa the quickest route to Tbilisi no no

49:34step in
49:34you ready three two one oh yeah yeah oh as a parent you realize that time goes very very quickly
49:43when they
49:47go from that age to the age she is at the minute that time flies there's a point where you
49:54have to
49:54let them grow up and be who she is going to be in this in this world it's hard letting
50:02Molly take
50:03control because I mean all daddies want to be needed but it is very difficult as a father so it's
50:08it's a
50:08work in progress and I am struggling with that big kick oh but we're making great memories on this
50:14trip so that's that's what this is all about Tbilisi here we come taxi to Tbilisi Tbilisi thank you let's

50:58yeah whoa Tbilisi here we come yes just ahead Mark and Margo have also opted for speed over budget we're
51:10doing what we have to do to get to checkpoint as fast as possible yeah this time we had to
51:15get a taxi
51:16didn't we I think we lost too much time otherwise yeah don't see we're that far behind everyone to
51:21be honest staying in the game the vibrant heart of Georgia Tbilisi its architecture is diverse as
