00:01Former Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Civil Engineering and Urban Transportation Department, Senior
00:08Deputy Director Sabuddin Mohamed Saleh began serving a four-year jail sentence on Thursday
00:14after the Court of Appeal upheld his conviction for obtaining 200,000 ringgit in bribes linked
00:21to the issuance of work permits for a subcontractor.
00:24The 64-year-old was taken into custody after the Court unanimously dismissed his appeal
00:31against both his conviction and sentence.
00:34The Court also upheld the one-million ringgit fine imposed by the High Court, but reduced
00:39the default jail term for non-payment from four years to two years following a concession
00:45by the prosecution.
00:46A warrant of committal was issued for the accused to begin serving his sentence immediately.
00:51The Court said the prosecution had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the money was paid
00:57to and received by the accused as an inducement in connection with contract works that was
01:02subsequently granted.
01:04The Court said the complainant's evidence was consistent, credible and supported by surrounding
01:10circumstances, including proof that both parties knew each other, which undermined the
01:16defence's claim that they were strangers.
01:19Sabuddin was charged with accepting bribes from a subcontractor between 2018 and 2020 while
01:26serving as senior deputy director in return for facilitating work permits for road resurfacing
01:31projects in Kuala Lumpur.
