00:01Indonesia's finance minister has withdrawn a proposal to impose a levy on ships passing through the Straits of Malacca.
00:09Speaking at a financial symposium in Jakarta, Purbaya Yudi Sadewa acknowledged that although the strait is a key global trade
00:16and energy route,
00:18monetizing it as a revenue source is neither easy nor appropriate, citing legal, geopolitical, and practical constraints.
00:26Purbaya had briefly suggested that Indonesia could follow Iran's move to consider charging vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
00:34He said any similar move in the Straits of Malacca would require consultation with Malaysia and Singapore as the other
00:42coastal states along the waterway.
00:44The idea to charge vessels for passage through the waterway runs counter to the position taken by Malaysia and Singapore.
00:51Both countries have said they are committed to ensuring freedom of navigation and transit in the streets of Malacca in
00:59line with international law.
01:01Narmthar Raja, FMT.
